** He almost has been let out of the box to walk around and relieve himself. "Spent four years in a box" is almost certainly an exaggeration. Much like real life prisons, he would likely get periods of exercise, food, and the like, but when he spends lockup periods and at night, he is sealed inside the tiny box.

Jayne's old crime buddy Stitch has spent the last 4 years in a tiny box where he can't even fully extend his legs, much less work out. I can't imagine the food is very nutritious either. His muscles should be completely atrophied, to say nothing of how bad his back must be. So how is he able to manhandle Simon (who while not a skilled fighter is in relatively good shape) without even raising a sweat?

** There's not any real indication as to when the epilogue took place. One thing to remember is that they are in space and precisely when Early attacked the ship is unclear. He may have done it in the "morning" period so they were close to when everyone would get up anyway. Another possibility is that, because of the attack, everyone was awake afterward and Simon needed surgery, so they just started the day anyway. Since they're living in space, "night" and "day" would be more dictated by when people get up and do things over daylight hours.

The last scene in Objects in Space doesn't make sense to me, time-wise. The episode takes place in the middle of the night. But the last scene clearly takes place the next day- why would they wait that long to get the bullet out of Simon's leg? I understand Zoe would need some preparation, but surely not 6 or 7 hours' worth.

** Additionally, Firefly crew may not be this kind of people, but some in the 'verse must be - when I stub my toe, I can let out a ClusterFBomb and all the imprecations in English against whatever just hurt me. I wouldn't be caught dead saying anything more than a very minced oath in Vietnamese, my mother tongue. I just have an aversion to swearing in Viet because it feels much worse than English. (I'm from a similar background and upbringing as the Tams, for reference.) Presumably the Chinese swears provide this kind of distance to English speakers in the 'verse.

** I think the discussion of Shan Yu at the beginning of the next episode lends support to the above answer. Paraphrasing from memory, the quote goes something like "Hold him over the volcano's edge, and you will finally meet the man". Jayne's personal "volcano's edge" was the airlock, and his reaction convinced Mal there was some good in him, albeit deeply buried.

*** Mal does shoot Dobbs in the head, but he has a chance to aim down the sights. Dobbs wasn't paying attention and that gave Mal the time to draw and aim before shooting. When confronting the Operative, Mal quick-draws and shoots from the hip without aiming; in that case hitting the head would be much harder so shooting for center mass would be better.

** ^ Mal is a soldier: He's trained to shoot center of mass. Apart from the pilot episode where he casually headshots Dobbs without breaking stride? Mal's very capable of a quickdraw headshot if he wants. He does aim for the end at the end but the Operative gets his gauntlets in the way.

* The submarine show seaQuest DSV has a notable episode from 1994, a full decade before Serenity. In Sympathy for the Deep, an underwater colony named Miranda is overrun by crazed inhabitants after a social experiment focusing on eliminating "negative" emotions goes awry. Has any connection between seaQuest and Firefly/Serenity ever been documented?

*** It's explicitly stated in the second episode of the show that planets have bizarre side effects when being terraformed, such as random diseases that no one expected. It's entirely plausible that the Pax had some bizarre side effect caused by Miranda's unique characteristics that no one saw coming. The whole point behind the planet was for it to be a test.

The trick for Jayne would be to hit him hard enough to flip him, but also catch him in a way that doesn't force Jayne in the direction of the other guy's momentum once he's holding onto him.

** It may be a case of Unreliable Narrator, but Mal told one of his soldiers that the Alliance stated they were going to walk into the Valley unopposed. If his statement was accurate, then the terrain mattered. It also sounded like the war was a series of gradual defeats, with the Valley being the biggest one that determined the fate of the war. In the flashback of Mal, Zoe, and Tracy fighting in a different battle, Zoe is flabbergasted that their command was considering surrendering their position. In Serenity Valley their air force didn't show up because their command determined that battle had become a lost cause. Zoe described surrender negotiations which dramatically increased the already horrendous casualties on both sides which sounds like it may have been THE final battle of the war.

** River's general craziness and her obsession about Miranda in the movie are two different issues. She said "Miranda" immediately after the combat trigger was given to her. Somehow they got tied together or the Miranda issue was suppressed and the trigger woke it up and gave her something new to sound nuts about. Once the truth was revealed she promptly threw up and cleared her head. She didn't exhibit any more "crazy" until the Reavers showed up, which may have been leftovers of the Miranda victims screaming at her in her head.

**They didn't take over the station. They penetrated straight to Niska's office to rescue Mal. They had so little control over the situation they nearly lost their toehold if not for River's involvement. The got Mal, Niska ducked out, and it was too dangerous to continue searching for him.

** A 1% side effect? The Pax had a 99% death rate. One has to wonder how long they observed the lab rats that they missed them going from calm to malaise to the point of starving to death. Or the drug induced two major unforeseen side effects that the lab tests somehow completely missed because they couldn't replicate Miranda's conditions.

Added DiffLines:

** The Alliance is a police state. Turning the entire species quiet and subservient is the ultimate accomplishment. They weren't planning on using it as a weapon, but making it the standard way of life. Mal's conjecture on the purpose of the project was that the Alliance believes it can "make" people "better." The scientist who died on the planet also presented a related mea culpa.

* This bugged me so much while watching Serenity, Zoe points out that the Reavers just hang around between Haven and Miranda, sending out raiding parties, the bit that bugs me is the Reavers have an entire planet to hang around on when not raiding, so the obvious question is this, why don't they? you would think having more room for torture rooms and the like would be attractive to them, or is it instinctual fear of the place (as much as they can have fear) or some Raver superstition?
