** That one's easy: UsefulNotes/FairUse. As long as the "borrowed" bits A) are small, B) are "transformative" (i.e. they tweak or alter the source material rather than just flat-out copying it), and C) do not constitute any threat or challenge to the profitability of the source material (i.e. no one looking to buy or read Half Life material would consider Erfworld an adequate "substitute"), then it's fine. The actual doctrine of Fair Use is a bit more complicated and nuanced than that, but the gist of it is - making small references to copyrighted works, ''especially'' in the context of humor, is usually A-OK.

** I'm not seeing the ''aesop,'' broken ''or otherwise''. "Is there free will at all here," "Lolno" isn't much of a MoralOfTheStory.

Hollywood Nerd has been disambig'd and is no longer a trope.

** Calling it "a boatload of responsibility" is a bit of an understatement. He's a pacifist who now has no choice but to kill. And as for Parson, remember that he's a wargamer with minimal social skills. Sure, he's not a HollywoodNerd who stammers through every sentence, but when he's in a dangerous situation, his first thought is purely tactical. When Sizemore asked for permission to leave, Parson wasn't thinking "My pacifist friend is having a lot of difficulty with all the killing and chaos, I should let him down easy," he was thinking "One of my greatest assets, one of the first targets for my many enemies, wants to leave. I should tell him no."

** It was mentioned in the comic itself that Erfworlders speculate that casters pop based on the ruler's heart, and Jillian's heart was braced for war. Most likely, King Banhammer got to have a whole bunch of casters because their disciplines fueled his desire for philosophical discussions. Jillian likes personal combat, so even casters with a strong disposition for war probably didn't fit her subconscious tastes.
