ANSWER FROM AUTHOR: The first part will be answered in a few weeks/a month or two: the second part might or might not be directly said in the comic, so basically it's just kept around by keeping it covered with some sort of substance that sticks well. Quinn didn't keep it covered in a substance when he wanted to show Alex though, as going through a page of Quinn wiping stuff off of an object is a lot less aesthetically pleasing/wasting page real-estate, when he could just have done it the way he did it.
