*** What mental disorder does Mitch suffer from to make him act this way? Clearly there is something else wrong with him besides sociopathy.

**** Translation it’s usually the other way around i.e the battered wives usually wind up dead before anybody realises that the husband is talking out the back end of a bull.

*** More than likely, it's partly connections but more that he was gaslighting Slim, which is TruthInTelevision for domestic abusers. A lawyer she goes to after being attacked again points out that she had at least two chances to report him and didn't. It's also revealed that his DirtyCop friend is fearful of being exposed to his superiors while helping his friend. Everyone else who we see go after Mitch appear to be private investigators or hired thugs impersonating law enforcement.

*** The "lucky" comment is referring to the fact that unlike many other domestic calls (which this cop has no doubt been to many of), the ''woman'' is the (relatively) uninjured/alive one at the end, rather than the man.

*** She's the 'wife' and 'mother of his children' that he needs to make his life 'complete'. The mistresses are for sex, Slim is for cooking his food, cleaning his house and taking care of his kids. She's pretty and easily cowed. Plus, once they got together, she became 'his'. He's not going to let her go, because he's a possessive prick. He's ''never'' going to let her go, and the abuse is just going to escalate until he actually kills her. It ''is'' self-defence, just...pro-active self-defence.

*** Actually, if you listen to the police that arrived at the end of the movie, he states that she is "One of the lucky ones". What this means exactly is anyone's guess, but this troper thinks that Mitch may have killed other women who realized what he was and tried to run from him. She's the one that fought back, and won. He's also the worst type of offender for a prosecutor to go after, one with ALLOT of money, so she did them a favor.
