** Doctor Strange isn't willing to kill Bruce Banner, which means he can't break out the Dormammu-level weaponry (GodzillaThreshold or no). He expressly states that he could teleport Hulk away, but exiling Hulk has failed ''twice'' already [[FromBadToWorse and made things vastly worse each time]]. And the Hulk's rage makes him impossible to mind-control. Of course, once the Hulk re-shatters Strange's hands, the point becomes moot.

** As ''everyone'' in the comic keeps pointing out, Hulk is madder and stronger than he has ever been. Strange no longer has the capability to defeat Hulk without killing him, and of all of the Illuminati, he clearly feels the most guilt. Channeling Zom was him deliberately holding back in an attempt to avoid killing his friend.

* FridgeBrilliance: More of a meta-example than anything. Ask yourself why Strange felt it was necessary to channel Zom to beat Hulk when Strange on his own is capable of fighting beings that FAR outclass Hulk in every way. There was no other way to convincingly have Strange lose than to have him distracted with something even worse than Hulk during the fight (not to suggest that Strange's defeat was convincing, just more convincing than having Hulk win on his own merits).

** FridgeBrilliance: There was no other way to convincingly have Strange lose than to have him distracted with something even worse than Hulk during the fight (not to suggest that Strange's defeat was convincing, just more convincing than having Hulk win on his own merits). Still doesn't explain how he allowed himself to be put into a situation where summoning Zom seemed like a good idea, but uhh...what are you gonna do?
*** Outside of Hulk's supporting cast/family Strange has the most insight of any other hero on the nature of Hulk and Banner, having spent so much time with him on the Defenders. He let his guard down when Hulk turned back into Banner because he could not conceive that Banner was working with Hulk. Essentially Hulk beat Strange the same way Strange tends to beat many of his godlike multiverse-threatening opponents. Hulk tricked Strange.
The shattered hands, and disbelief over what happened could presumably panic Strange enough to make a rash decision like summoning Zom (Without his hands Strange couldn't pull off his normal spells, and his mind was too clouded by pain/confusion to really think things through.) Lastly, Strange only channeled some of Zom's power, and in a purely physical manner.

Even if Hulk does get stronger from dark magic, why would Strange feel the need to use dark magic if his normal magic takes a bit smelly shit on anything Hulk has ever accomplished? The brilliance stands on its own. It doesn\'t need to be qualified by a bunch of hooey about how Hulk iz teh 1337 h4xx0rz.

** It is the strongest the Hulk had ever been at that time, and the Hulk lacks any upper boundary to his strength. Before, he was always a raging monster. In "World War Hulk", he was so angry that his anger was calm. He beat Black Bolt, Stark, and every other heavy-hitter in the Marvel Universe that could be thrown at him outside of Sentry. Plus, dark magic makes the Hulk stronger just as much as radiation does, so Strange would need to bring the heaviest-hitting magics he could without making the Hulk even stronger.

*** To answer both issues, Strange has been known to overreact and turn to black magic in the past. It's possible he just panicked. Given the Hulk was his friend, it's quite possible he wasn't thinking properly.

Treshold shmeshold. He\'s got power to stop Hulk about a billion times over on a bad day. He allowed himself to be put in a position where summoning Zom was a viable choice, when he could have resolve the situation with a snap of his fingers.

** He was convinced the GodzillaThreshold had been crossed. As far as he knew, Hulk was going to kill the captured Illuminati (Reed, Tony, and Black Bolt) unless Strange could somehow take him down. He couldn't heal his hands in time, so he couldn't use any of his spells. Zom was the biggest weapon he could use at the moment, so he went for it. (And yes, he probably was in a lot of pain and not thinking too clearly).
