The bears were created by Those Characters From Cleveland and first appeared on American Greetings cards in 1981, contemporary with WesternAnimation/StrawberryShortcake. These little guys and gals were a hit right out of the gate when Creator/Kenner launched a toy line two years later. They had a lot of animated screentime for the rest of the decade: two specials, a TV series, and three theatrical films over 1985-87. The franchise died in the 90s after a very brief and unsuccessful redesign; compare Franchise/MyLittlePony. The franchise returned after the turn of the millenium.

* EarlyInstallmentWeirdness: In the earlier days of the franchise (mainly in the books made before the animated special and TV series were created) the Care Bears and Care Bear Cousins used to fly away back from a person's home and enter by a rainbow through a window, before Cloud Cars were created for the animated specials. The Care Bear Stare also wasn't used by the characters until the first animated special, which introduced Professor Cold Heart, and had a human Cloudkeeper who watched over the bears and was never seen again.

** The Care Bears Cousins haven't shown up as often as back in the 80's. While the Cousins do show up rarely in the '00s revival such as their appearance in the book "Giving Thanks"., they weren't as prominent as they were in the 80s. *** The 2019 revival (WesternAnimation/CareBearsUnlockTheMagic) has a compromise; Cheer is literally promoted to leader by Tenderheart, while he, alongside Bedtime and Wish Bear, work as Caring Control. Furthermore, Oopsy Bear is obviously not here and is replaced by Good Luck Bear, who is a main character.

* RecycledINSPACE: One of the oddest examples this side of Fonzie and the Series/HappyDays Gang. The final season of the original "Care Bears Family" cartoon featured two spinoffs. One was a Recycled IN SPACE Franchise/StarTrek parody. The other was a Recycled In Prehistoria Clan of the Cave Bear parody. This, friends, is what a DorkAge looks like and the cartoon was canceled soon after.
