Up To Eleven is a defunct trope

* Ruby with Sapphire. Ruby is hot-headed and emotional, and it's implied that she constantly hurts herself trying to get out of her cell in [[Recap/StevenUniverseS1E49JailBreak "Jail Break"]]. Sapphire is calm and collected and simply sings to calm Ruby down. They're also red and blue respectively. [[Recap/StevenUniverseS2E15KeystoneMotel "Keystone Motel"]] further exemplifies this; both are angry enough with Pearl that they're suffering from PowerIncontinence, but Sapphire is already prepared to forgive Pearl for tricking them, while Ruby is literally fuming with rage over it. The reason being that Ruby gets so emotional that she's essentially stuck in the present, only thinking about how mad she is rather than any actual solutions. Sapphire on the other hand focuses too much on the future where the problem has already been solved and didn't notice the emotional strain that exists before the actual resolution. It's practically taken UpToEleven with the reveal that Ruby and Sapphire appear to have fire and ice themed powers, respectively. Even their designed places in the Gem caste system are opposites, Ruby is a RedShirt, Sapphire is a BlueBlood.

example already mentioned in depth elsewhere in the article

* Lonely Pearl was abandoned by her master and was incapable of moving on from that. Pearl, on the other hand, was abandoned by Rose, but was able to move on with the help of her friends.

* Connie Maheswaran to Peedee Fryman. They are both mature for their age and have proven to be slightly more cynical in regards to Steven's endless optimism. Peedee is more cynical, while Connie is realistic (not entirely overly optimistic, not completely cynical).
* Connie Maheswaran to Ronaldo Fryman. Both are humans who have [[IJustWantToBeSpecial a desire to be special]] and an interest in the abnormal (Connie with high fantasy/magic, Ronaldo with paranormal activity). While Ronaldo ''actively'' seeks out a chance to be part of the magical world, he never really gets directly involved in the source (i.e., the Crystal Gems) while Connie never did seek it out, but the magical world opened up to her.
* Connie Maheswaran to Pink Diamond of all people, concerning their relationship with their parental figures. They both tend to be submissive to their respective parents' controlling nature and secretly act out their personal lives out of fear of disappointing them. However, while Connie manages to stand up to her parents and change them for the better, Pink failed to convince Yellow and Blue [[spoiler:to let her relinquish her own colony, and continued to rebel against them without their knowledge]].

* Lapis Lazuli to Connie Maheswaran. Both were lonely beings with a [[IJustWantToBeFree desire towards freedom]] and have a blue color motif (Connie's being specifically teal) and were able to get better thanks to Steven's [[BecauseYouWereNiceToMe kindness]] and [[LivingEmotionalCrutch emotional support]]. However, while Connie is a generally cheerful and friendly human who admires the Crystal Gems, Lapis is usually a grumpy and sour Gem who is aloof towards the same group.

* Bismuth to Jasper. Both are muscular Gems with long hair who ''love'' to fight, [[spoiler:and will use any means necessary to defeat their enemies]]. However, they're on opposite sides of the war. Most notably, Jasper respected Rose's tactics, dismissed her ideals, and saw Steven as a tinier, weaker form of Rose. [[spoiler:Bismuth adored Rose's new ideas of being your own person, but felt she wasn't brutal enough. She's also largely supportive of Steven and eventually sees him as ''better'' version of Rose.]] Tellingly though, both of them [[spoiler:concluded that Rose was only pretending to be Steven and believed they were attacking "her"]], albeit Bismuth got better. Also, Bismuth [[spoiler:thinks that shattering the Diamonds will help free the lower classes from the Diamonds' tyranny]], while Jasper [[spoiler:is filled with a massive amounts of rage and self-loathing largely because she thinks her Diamond was shattered.]] The biggest difference, however, is [[spoiler:Bismuth ultimately accepts Steven's offer of redemption.]]
* Bismuth to Peridot. Both are builders of sorts, [[spoiler:but while Peridot pulled a HeelFaceTurn, Bismuth pulled a slight FaceHeelTurn. While Peridot conceded her plan to destroy the Cluster when Steven suggested looking for another option, when Steven said that there had to be an alternative to using Bismuth's Breaking Point, she tried to kill him. [[OddFriendship Amusingly]], they become fast friends in [[Recap/StevenUniverseS5E23Reunited "Reunited"]], with Bismuth saying that she likes how Peridot [[{{Determinator}} doesn't quit]].]] [[spoiler:We also see their contrasting responses to Greg; Peridot saw him as an interesting human at first, and she sees him as a friend. While Peridot pushed Greg off the barn roof to see if he could fly while he was repairing it back in season 2, Bismuth is sawing up wood to help him repair the house and Temple. Justified in that Peridot didn't know humans were "fragile and soft", while Bismuth does, and Bismuths are made for construction work.]]

* Opal to Garnet, though it only makes sense in retrospect with the revelation of Garnet’s true nature. Both are fusions of two Gems with extremely different personalities, and those personalities combine to make the fusion [[TheStoic stoic]] and centered. However, while Garnet’s components genuinely love each other, making the fusion very easy to maintain, Pearl and Amethyst get on each other’s nerves constantly, causing Opal to be incredibly unstable despite her calmness.
* Sugilite fusion goes much smoother than Opal's, and her personality is the complete opposite. She comes across as an exaggerated version of Amethyst. This actually makes sense in light of [[Recap/StevenUniverseS1E49JailBreak "Jail Break"]]; Garnet is a stable fusion of two opposing personalities, so throwing Amethyst into the mix naturally upsets that balance in favor of the more hot-blooded Ruby and Amethyst.
* Sugilite also one to Sardonyx, who is powerful, but more careful, controlled and easygoing, while Sugilite is reckless and headstrong.
* Sardonyx a direct contrast to Sugilite as much as Amethyst is to Pearl — careful and precise in comparison to the other fusion's brute force. Sugilite is modeled as a professional wrestler, while Sardonyx is a stage magician: both performers, but with very different performances. Additionally, their AnimalMotifs are opposites; Sugilite is associated with dragons, vicious, brutish and destructive. Sardonyx, however, is associated with dragon''flies'', swift, colorful and graceful. Further, Sugilite's debut had her unwilling to unfuse until she was knocked unconscious, whereas Sardonyx gracefully returns to being Pearl and Garnet once she has fulfilled her task; both enjoyed existing and showing off for Steven, but while Sugilite grasped her existence and refused to let go, Sardonyx was simply happy for the opportunity.
** Also, ultimately using Sardonyx to destroy the Communications Hub was a worse idea than using Sugilite, but for opposite reasons. Sugilite was so reckless in destroying the tower that she was dangerous to everyone around her, and became the villain of [[Recap/StevenUniverseS1E20CoachSteven "Coach Steven"]] because of her refusal to unfuse. The problem with Sardonyx was that her grace and power was addictive to Pearl and made her want to keep re-fusing, and gracefully disassembling the tower gave Pearl the opportunity to repair it.
* Alexandrite a good guy fusion, opposing the (mostly) evil Malachite. Besides being kaiju-sized fusions, Alexandrite has a fire breath attack, while Malachite has ice powers.
* Smoky Quartz to Sugilite, which is made up of the worst parts of Amethyst's and Garnet's personalities — their pride and recklessness. Smoky Quartz is brought out by the natural friendship Steven has with Amethyst.
* Smoky Quartz laid-back attitude also contrasts with Sardonyx's [[LargeHam over-the-top]] personality.

Quartz's laid-back attitude also contrasts with Sardonyx's [[LargeHam over-the-top]] personality.

* Fluorite to the Cluster Gems [[spoiler:as well as the Cluster]]. Speech impediment aside, Fluorite embodies the possibility of multiple Gems loving each other enough to fuse willingly, giving them a comfortable new form to act through; Fluorite even mentions a willingness to add another Gem if they are compatible. The Cluster Gems look quite monstrous in appearance by comparison and were made by shattering other Gems and forcibly and permanently fusing their remaining shards together [[spoiler:with the Cluster being a planet-wide forced fusion]], [[AndIMustScream leaving the owners of said Gems in constant and immeasurable pain as they lash out in a desire to be whole again]].
* Fluorite to Malachite. They're similar in that both of them have highly warped inhumanoid forms. However, while Malachite's components hated each other and one spent an entire season trying to keep the other prisoner, Fluorite's components are in harmony and work together, albeit slowly.
* Fluorite to Alexandrite, who is also another fusion between multiple willing and loving components, but the relationship between components is one of family/friendship, not romantic, and thus highly unstable. And unlike Fluorite, Alexandrite is not a casual permafusion, but one used mostly for combat and in highly dangerous situations.

* The Diamond Authority to Andy [=DeMayo=]; they are all in a way traditionalists (the Gems actually uphold the strict Gem hierarchy) who end up alienating their loved ones due to being stuck in their ways (his extended family for Andy, Pink Diamond for Yellow and Blue). [[spoiler:They also share a nephew figure in Steven who they both don't initially know of or recognize. The difference so far is that Andy eventually reconciled with his family before it was too late, while Pink Diamond felt so alienated she faked her death and took up a new identity in the hope of bringing some change. Another thing to note is that they both initially didn't recognize Steven as their nephew/a Diamond and had initial hostility towards him — although Andy quickly learned the truth while the Diamonds were still unaware up until the events of the movie. Also, Andy's reactions to Steven's Gem family (Peridot, Lapis, and later the other Gems) was initially very hostile, while Blue's first meeting with Steven's human family (Greg) was warm as they discussed their shared losses.]] The lessons that can come from this is that, even if your relatives seem toxic, they're still family, and you should at least make an attempt to get to know and understand them.
* The Diamond Authority to the Maheswarans. Despite their similarities, they turn out to contrast more in family issues. Connie's parents appear HappilyMarried despite their strict parenting to their daughter and their abusive behavior is actually unintentional. When they realize what they're doing to Connie is wrong, they're willing to change and accept their daughter on what she wants to be. The Diamonds, on the other hand, are much more dysfunctional and toxic as a result of adhering to their caste system for millennia. Thus, they are unable to accept change and expect everything to be the same, willing to harm even each other if one of them steps out of line despite their love for each other. When Pink desired to change herself, the others never approved of this and dismissed her authority at every turn.

* Also, Yellow Diamond to Dr. Maheswaran, according to [[Recap/StevenUniverseS5E12JungleMoon "Jungle Moon"]], where the former is being portrayed by the latter as a symbolically similar treatment toward their sister/daughter, Pink Diamond/Connie. However, unlike Priyanka, who managed to see the error of her ways and reconcile with Connie before she damaged their relationship even further, Yellow refused to allow Pink to give up her colony and took away her control of Earth just because she won't complete it, and lives to regret how she treated Pink by [[spoiler:seemingly]] allowing her to be destroyed along with their relationship.

* White Diamond's Pearl to Yellow Pearl. Both are Pearls who have roles beyond just being servants, but while Yellow Pearl is smug and condescending, Pink Pearl is [[NiceGirl kind]] and outgoing.
* White Diamond's Pearl to Blue Pearl. Both are cared about by their respective owners, but while Blue Pearl is quiet and acts like a normal Pearl, Pink Pearl is cheerful, upbeat, and treats her Diamond like a friend.
* White Diamond's Pearl to the Crystal Gem Pearl, her successor. While the Crystal Gem Pearl acted robotic towards Pink Diamond, but eventually grew beyond her role and helped her stage a rebellion, Pink Pearl acted playful towards Pink Diamond, only to be forcibly removed from her and given to White Diamond.
* White Diamond's Pearl to Spinel. Both served as a "playmate" to Pink Diamond, who (whether intentionally or not) later went on to abandon them, and suffered emotional trauma because of it. Whereas Spinel wore her trauma on her sleeve, Pink Pearl kept hers hidden behind a veil of denial and cheerful indifference.
* Chert is an orange Quartz with the gemstone on her nose, while Flint is a darker Quartz with the gemstone on her chest. They look like Jasper and Amethyst respectively, but judging from Chert's reaction, they have the exact opposite kind of relationship. Adding onto that, Chert is voiced by Michaela Dietz, who is Amethyst's voice actress, Flint is voiced by Kimberly Brooks, who is Jasper's voice actress. Plus, Chert is short and chubby like Amethyst, whereas Flint is tall and muscular like Jasper.

* Navy to Peridot. When Peridot first came to Earth she was afraid of it and distrustful of the Crystal Gems, but she eventually warms up to both over time. In contrast, Navy [[LikeADuckTakesToWater embraces the Earth and her new "friends" immediately]], [[spoiler:but reveals that this was just an act to get back at the Crystal Gems for tricking her team]]. Also, in "Message Received", Peridot appears to betray the Crystal Gems before it's revealed that she was trying to get Yellow Diamond to [[CutLexLuthorACheck spare the Earth because of its resources.]] [[spoiler:Navy instead pretends to defect from Homeworld to steal back Roaming Eye, at which point she happily betrays Steven and escapes.]]
* Navy to [[spoiler:Pink Diamond. Both are cheery Gems with their gemstones on their navels and have a penchant for [[ManipulativeBitch manipulation]]. But while Pink Diamond is [[TheHighQueen good-hearted]] and has no malice in her even when manipulating others, Navy is a BitchInSheepsClothing who is outright [[{{Sadist}} sadistic]] towards the people she manipulates.]]

* The Famethyst to the Jasper from Yellow Diamond's Court in multiple ways. She's a perfectly formed "ultimate Quartz", while several of them have visible physical flaws including Carnelian's short height and Skinny's ...well, skinniness. She takes her duties as a Homeworld warrior seriously, while they love to play around and have fun. She looks down on "defective" Gems and despises the Crystal Gems, as opposed to these Quartzes who happily embrace Amethyst as family, defect and all, while assisting the Crystal Gems against Holly Blue Agate.
** The contrast is especially striking between different Jaspers. Whereas "ultimate Quartz" Jasper is hulking, loud and belligerent, Skinny is slim, laid-back and friendly.
** They're also a huge contrast to Amethyst's other family, the Crystal Gems, who are often high-strung, distant, and bad at interpersonal relationships, compared to this easygoing, tight-knit, and loving bunch.
* Aquamarine to Lapis Lazuli; both are blue Gems with water wings and a teardrop-shaped gem. Lapis is a kind Gem underneath all her physical and psychological trauma and has a relaxed hipster look to her. Aquamarine, on the other hand, acts as an adorable kid but is really a sadist without the mask, and wears uptight, professional clothes. And while both are very powerful, Lapis' power is innate while Aquamarine's comes from outside technology.

friendly.

* Like the Gem Mutants of season 2, Rutile Twins are a permafusion caused by two Gems becoming permanently physically joined. However, the Rutile twins were born this way and are two (mostly) whole gems joined together, and not the artificial joining of multiple agonized Gem fragments. This being the case, they are fully in control of their body and faculties as opposed to the constant pain, anger and confusion the Gem Mutants displayed.
* Padparadscha to the Crystal Gems' Sapphire. Padparadscha is a PerpetualSmiler, while Sapphire is usually TheStoic (at least whenever Ruby isn't around). Their overall color schemes are even direct complements of one another, and their gemstones are on opposite sides of the same hand. Sapphire is a prime example of what a gem of her type and station ''should'' be in Homeworld, while Padparascha was labeled defective and cast out of society due to her broken future vision. The circumstances of why they are Homeworld outcasts also differ — Sapphire left ''willingly'' (to protect the Crystal Gems' Ruby from being shattered), Padparadscha was shunned for simply being born with something out of her control.
* Cherry Quartz to Jasper, given how both are muscular Quartzes who are seen interacting with Steven. However, while Jasper is abrasive, self-absorbed and somewhat violent, Cherry is somewhat approachable and adaptable. While Jasper has a wild mane and asymmetric horns, Cherry's hair is tied up in a neat ponytail and her horns are neatly placed on her head. And finally, while Jasper's colorscheme consists of [[RedIsViolent harsh reds and oranges]], Cherry's is a [[RoseHairedSweetie friendly pink]].

* Andy [=DeMayo=] to Bismuth. Bismuth was an old friend who had a falling out with Steven's mother, while Andy is a member of Greg's family who had a falling out with him. Both have have allowed themselves to become bitter and spiteful over said falling out, and ultimately lash out because of it. Whereas Bismuth was a warm, caring person on the outside and a brutal KnightTemplar on the inside, Andy seems like a xenophobic jerk on the outside, but is [[JerkWithAHeartOfGold actually a good-hearted person on the inside.]] Both blame Steven's parent for the falling out despite [[NeverMyFault having just as much if not more fault in the situation]]. The difference is that, unlike Bismuth, Andy is able to ''realize'' his folly and reconcile. Also, while Bismuth tried to kill Steven for refusing to use the Breaking Point and prefers to be "shattered" or at least poofed, Andy saves Steven's life and suffers a JerkassRealization.

* Ronaldo Fryman to Jamie. Both are LargeHam [[{{Manchild}} manchildren]] with big imaginations that have taken a bigger role among the Beach City citizens when it comes to the Crystal Gems (albeit inadvertently) that have a close, friendly relationship with Steven. While Jamie's passion is 100% sincere and he is fully capable of growing as a person, trying to improve his lot in life with local theater and accepting Garnet's rejection (with a pep-talk first), Ronaldo only does everything [[ItsAllAboutMe out of a disingenuous plea for attention]] and will [[IRejectYourReality reject facts and common sense whenever it contradicts his insane worldview]].
* Priyanka Maheswaran mothering is a stark contrast to Rose's, though to what degree is only obvious once we get a better idea of Rose's character. Mrs. Maheswaran [[MyBelovedSmother oversees Connie's life constantly]], and has done everything she can to make sure her child has a successful future. Rose ''couldn't'' be there for Steven, which has left him with obvious issues, and wanted her child to have their own life even before they were born. [[spoiler:Ironically, Rose's former identity actually relates more to her daughter since Pink Diamond secretly rebelled against her own parental figures out of fear of disappointment just as Connie had done.]]
** Yellow Diamond is a better example, regarding their similar parenting skills on Connie and Pink Diamond, respectively. [[Recap/StevenUniverseS5E12JungleMoon "Jungle Moon"]] makes it symbolic by having her portray Yellow and Stevonnie as Pink in the latter's dream, showing that Yellow's dismissive attitude and strict chiding nature towards Pink makes it somewhat similar to her treatment to her daughter. However, while Priyanka managed to see the error of her ways and change herself for the better by the end of [[Recap/StevenUniverseS2E19NightmareHospital "Nightmare Hospital"]], Yellow (along with Blue) refused to relent on Pink regarding on her decision to give up her colony according to the flashback in [[Recap/StevenUniverseS5E17CantGoBack "Can't Go Back"]].
* Bill Dewey to Greg Universe. Both are loving fathers, but Greg gave up a promising music career and often hangs around with Steven during his day job. Meanwhile, Buck resents his dad for spending all his time on his political career. Also, Greg entered a relationship with Rose Quartz while Mayor Dewey is too awkward in his attempts to make a move on Pearl, who wouldn't be interested anyway.

* Jamie to Ronaldo. Both are LargeHam {{manchild}}ren with big imaginations that have taken a bigger role among the Beach City citizens when it comes to the Crystal Gems (albeit inadvertently) that have a close, friendly relationship with Steven. Whereas Ronaldo is an attention-seeking KnowNothingKnowItAll that shirks his responsibilities whose ego even gets on Steven's nerves, Jamie is a dorky idealist that tries to do good in his own melodramatic way.

* Blue Diamond to her "sister", Yellow Diamond. Aside from their colors and masculine/feminine personalities, Blue Diamond constantly and obsessively mourns Pink Diamond, collecting everything related to her to preserve Pink's memory, and is so utterly consumed by her own depression that she neglects her duties as ruler of Homeworld.
* White Diamond personality contrasts perfectly with [[AllLovingHero Pink/Rose/Steven]]; the latter is an extroverted people-lover, and the former is a [[{{Hikikomori}} shut-in]] who doesn't even realize that empathy exists.

* Yellow Diamond's Pearl to the Crystal Gem's Pearl: A shrill, egotistical, primped up secretary - in contrast to the self-conscious, multi-talented warrior that we're familiar with.
* Yellow Pearl to Blue Pearl as well, who appears to have neither the voice nor the autonomy of Yellow Pearl.

* Blue Diamond's Pearl to both the Crystal Gems' Pearl, Yellow Diamond's Pearl, and White Diamond's Pearl. Unlike her three cousins who seem, despite their [[ServantRace position in Gem hierarchy]], to have gained skills in areas outside their station (Crystal Gem Pearl being a warrior vs Yellow Diamond's Pearl being a secretary vs White Diamond's Pearl having more authority than ''Blue and Yellow Diamond'') — Blue Diamond's Pearl seems to be doing what a Pearl was made to do by simply standing around and looking pretty.

* As of [[Recap/StevenUniverseS5E18ASinglePaleRose "A Single Pale Rose"]], to [[spoiler:Yellow and Blue Diamond. They are both in a way traditionalists (the Gems actually uphold the strict Gem hierarchy) who end up alienating their loved ones due to being stuck in their ways (his extended family for Andy, Pink Diamond for Yellow and Blue). ** Garnet To Malachite. Malachite is a fusion born of hate and desperation, while Garnet is a fusion born of love and compassion.
*** Even more, knowing the circumstances behind Garnet's creation as of [[Recap/StevenUniverseS2E25TheAnswer "The Answer"]]. Both she and Malachite were created by a snap decision. However, whereas Malachite was born out of Jasper's scorn and desire for vengeance, Garnet was born from Ruby's need to protect Sapphire.
** Pearl and Amethyst play off each other by being opposites in every respect. Pearl is well-mannered, dainty, hard-working, and protective; Amethyst is a slob, ill-mannered, lazy, fun-loving, and irresponsible. Physically, [[FatAndSkinny Pearl is skinny while Amethyst is fat]]. Pearl's weapon is rigid and pierces while Amethyst's is flexible and crushes. Their differences can even be seen in the way they ''[[http://s14.postimg.org/rrqirgv0x/Pearl_amethyst_sit.png sit]]''.

** Amethyst revealed toward the end of Season 3 to also be this to Jasper. Amethyst was the last and smallest Gem to come from Earth's primary Kindergarten, which was otherwise planned and executed as an ideal facility, but still came out as "an overcooked runt" according to Jasper. Jasper was from the Beta Kindergarten (which was brought online during the War with the sole purpose of producing CannonFodder), but is, in Peridot's own words, "the ''ultimate Quartz''".
** Amethyst also one to Steven. Both are fun-loving and jokey and generally considered the most childish of the Crystal Gems, but whereas Steven is positive and optimistic Amethyst does it out of her insecurities and self-loathing.
** Pearl to Steven, as two gems that are arguably the closest to Rose. Steven barely knows his own mother since by definition his birth means that she cannot exist at the same time, but comes to be genuinely inspired by Rose's ideals and love for everyone. Pearl loved Rose and believed herself to be the gem that knew her the most, but mainly fought out of a blindly obsessive loyalty towards Rose rather than necessarily believing in the same ideals (at first, at least).
** Pearl to Blue Diamond. [[spoiler:Both are mourning someone, the same person in fact. While Pearl seemed to be obsessed with Rose at first, she eventually grew out of it and moved on. Blue, on the other hand, still heavily mourns Pink Diamond to this day, and is basically what would have happened if Pearl ''didn't'' let go of her obsession.]]
** Rose Quartz To her son, Steven Universe. Both are [[NiceGuy friendly]], [[MagneticHero charismatic]] Quartz Gems who [[AllLovingHero try to see the best in everyone]], serve as an [[LivingEmotionalCrutch emotional support to the other Crystal Gems]], have an InterspeciesRomance with an {{insecure|LoveInterest}} human, and have the same powers. However, as more secrets are revealed about Rose, it turns that unlike Steven who is a BadassPacifist, Rose was a deconstruction of MartialPacifist with her actions eventually bringing trouble for her son. Also, while Rose had trouble handling people's feelings and had an (initial) paternalistic attitude towards humans, Steven is surprisingly emotionally mature for his age and even when he's InnocentlyInsensitive, he ''will'' (mostly) know when he stepped out of line and apologize; plus, he doesn't see humans as inferior species since he ''did'' grow up with them. [[spoiler:Additionally, Steven CannotTellALie, yet Rose has kept a lie for ''millennia'' (and even then she ''never'' intended for the truth to be known). Also, Steven has never doubted the Gems' love for him, whereas Rose, who was Pink Diamond, believed the Diamonds never cared for her at all; and on that note, Steven even forgave the other Diamonds themselves, something Rose would clearly never do.]]
** Connie Maheswaran to Steven Universe. As one of the people around Steven's age and his closest friend, she functions as one to him (also doubling as TheLancer). In contrast to Steven's control-free, magical-filled upbringing, Connie grew up in a ''very'' restrictive household and had a normal life. In terms of personality, Steven is [[{{Keet}} energetic]], [[BadLiar not good at lying]], [[ActualPacifist nonviolent in every way]], and has a [[ThePollyanna healthy amount of confidence]]; Connie has proven to be an efficient ConsummateLiar, is usually mellow in comparison to Steven, likes action and adventure more than Steven, and (initially) [[HeroicSelfDeprecation has low self-confidence]].
** Connie Maheswaran to Pearl. Both are the {{Insecure Love Interest}}s to someone who is a Quartz Gem [[spoiler:or, rather, a Diamond]]. (Pearl with Rose, Connie with Steven), with said relationships starting because the Quartz Gem [[BecauseYouWereNiceToMe showed some form of kindness to them]]. Other similarities include a DarkAndTroubledPast with control playing a factor in it (Pearl's "role" in Homeworld, Connie having overly restrictive parents), having a [[IJustWantToBeSpecial desire to be special]], being knights to the Quartz Gem, skilled in swordsmanship, {{Badass Bookworm}}s/{{Cultured Badass}}es, [[CharacterDevelopment they learn to develop more confidence over time]]. However, while Pearl hides her insecurities with arrogance, Connie is more open about them. And while Pearl thought of Rose as a goddess-like figure and is only coming to terms that Rose wasn't perfect, Connie is aware of Steven's positive and negative qualities right from the start. And on a more subtle note, Pearl teaches Steven about Gem culture but Connie introduces him to human culture.
** Connie Maheswaran to Greg Universe. Both are the [[TokenHuman human allies of the Crystal Gems]], have an InterspeciesRomance with one of them (Greg with Rose, Connie with Steven), and are insecure about the place they have in a magical world. However, while Greg prefers to not get involved in magic Gem business (unless if the situation calls for it), Connie [[JumpedAtTheCall jumped at the chance]] to go on magical adventures. Also, while the Crystal Gems took a ''long'' time to come to respect and actually be nice to Greg (especially Pearl), it didn't take as long with Connie (Pearl was even happy to be her teacher).
** Connie Maheswaran to Peedee Fryman. They are both mature for their age and have proven to be slightly more cynical in regards to Steven's endless optimism. Peedee is more cynical, while Connie is realistic (not entirely overly optimistic, not completely cynical).
** Connie Maheswaran to Ronaldo Fryman.
** Connie Maheswaran to Pink Diamond of all people, concerning their relationship with their parental figures.
** Peridot to Jasper. Jasper was TheBrute to Peridot's EvilGenius. Their methods as villains were diametric opposites and their eventual fates were likewise opposite: Peridot ends up going native and slowly grows to love living on Earth. Jasper's hatred meanwhile leads her to choose corruption instead.
** Peridot to Amethyst. The exact same action — naming their identification code — has the complete opposite meaning for these characters. For Peridot, it’s a sudden sharp reminder that to Homeworld, she isn’t special; she’s one of thousands or millions of Peridots, and her individuality is meaningless. Her time with the Crystal Gems has made her feel unique and welcome, but that won’t last if she goes back to her home planet. She’s not just Peridot, she’s ''a'' Peridot. For Amethyst, it’s an exciting revelation that she has a place, an identity, in this world and family that she never had the chance to know. Even as a member of the Crystal Gems she’s always felt like an outcast and a misfit, but know she knows EXACTLY where she came from. She’s not just Amethyst, she’s ''this'' Amethyst.
** Lapis Lazuli to Steven Universe. Lapis is cynical and becomes sullen around others, particularly Peridot and the Crystal Gems, whom she carries grudges against. Steven is friendly, optimistic and forgiving. Since he is the only one she's been shown to be willing to open up around, this stark difference in personality is primarily what is driving Lapis [[DefrostingIceQueen to open up and accept others around her]].
** Lapis Lazuli to Connie Maheswaran.
** Lapis Lazuli to Peridot. The former was forced into the gem conflict through bad luck, the latter was purposefully created just to be a part of it. The former started out innocent but becomes more cynical and dangerous due to everything that happens to her throughout the series, whereas the latter is extremely cynical and dangerous to begin with, but ends up losing those qualities and becoming a better person through the Crystal Gems, her former enemies. Also, Peridot comes to Yellow Diamond, her boss, and flat out rejects the idea of doing what she wants her to do, whilst Jasper comes to Lapis in an attempt to make her do what they were doing before, and Lapis isn't as strong in rejecting her.
** Ruby with Sapphire.
** Bismuth to Jasper.
** Bismuth to Peridot.
** Greg Universe to Marty. Their personalities are completely opposed. Greg was faithful and genuinely loving to his girlfriend, a {{Good Parent|s}} to his son who he's supportive of, and an over all content and genuinely good person. Marty ReallyGetsAround, left the woman he got pregnant, is a thoroughly terrible parent to his son who he only uses as a means to get ahead, and is ultimately an awful, greedy person. Greg, despite not being wealthy at all, is content with his life while Marty, despite being rich, is still greedy for more money. It's even reflected in their character designs: Greg is BigFun while Marty is LeanAndMean.
** Greg Universe to Rose Quartz. For all Rose's personal power and legendary ability, it's Greg's empathy and compassion that makes there son Steven a hero.
** Opal to Garnet, though it only makes sense in retrospect with the revelation of Garnet’s true nature.
** Sugilite fusion goes much smoother than Opal's, and her personality is the complete opposite.
** Sugilite also one to Sardonyx, who is powerful, but more careful, controlled and easygoing, while Sugilite is reckless and headstrong.
** Sardonyx a direct contrast to Sugilite as much as Amethyst is to Pearl — careful and precise in comparison to the other fusion's brute force.
*** Also, ultimately using Sardonyx to destroy the Communications Hub was a worse idea than using Sugilite, but for opposite reasons.
** Alexandrite a good guy fusion, opposing the (mostly) evil Malachite. Besides being kaiju-sized fusions, Alexandrite has a fire breath attack, while Malachite has ice powers.
** Smoky Quartz to Sugilite, which is made up of the worst parts of Amethyst's and Garnet's personalities — their pride and recklessness. Smoky Quartz is brought out by the natural friendship Steven has with Amethyst.
** Smoky Quartz laid-back attitude also contrasts with Sardonyx's [[LargeHam over-the-top]] personality.
** Malachite is more or less the ''opposite'' of Garnet's truly loving, genuine fusion, instead being born purely out of desperation and savagery, and ultimately used with apathy towards the other party on one side and an intention to defeat the other on the other side. Garnet even points out how bad the two sides are for each other. This even carries over to their designs, as while Garnet is by far the most humanoid fusion of them all, to the point that it's not immediately apparent she ''is'' a fusion, Malachite is barely humanoid at all. She doesn't even have her own voice actor, with [[VoiceOfTheLegion her two components' voice actors talking over each other instead]], to emphasize how unstable she is. And while like Garnet, her components wanted to remain being her, it was for completely selfish reasons rather than genuinely loving each other.
** Rhodonite to Garnet, despite both of them being love-based perma-fusions. Garnet is TheStoic because her components are [[FieryRedhead Ruby]] and [[EmotionlessGirl Sapphire]], so they cancel each other out. Rhodonite is a nervous wreck because ''her'' component Pearl and Ruby personalities enable each other's negative traits and are magnified by fusing.
** Fluorite to the Cluster Gems [[spoiler:as well as the Cluster]].
** Fluorite to Malachite. They're similar in that both of them have highly warped inhumanoid forms. However, while Malachite's components hated each other and one spent an entire season trying to keep the other prisoner, Fluorite's components are in harmony and work together, albeit slowly.
** Fluorite to Alexandrite, who is also another fusion between multiple willing and loving components, but the relationship between components is one of family/friendship, not romantic, and thus highly unstable. And unlike Fluorite, Alexandrite is not a casual permafusion, but one used mostly for combat and in highly dangerous situations.
** Fluorite to Garnet. Both are love-based permafusions whose component Gems are equal in number, but Garnet (two Gems) is fairly exclusive ("Three's a crowd.") while Fluorite's components (six Gems) are in an open relationship that gladly accepts other compatible Gems.
** Similar to Malachite, Bluebird Azurite is one to Garnet. Bluebird is a fusion between a Ruby and a refined and small blue gem, but is built entirely on hate rather than love. She's a mishmash of her components' colors, which don't blend on any part of her, and she loses an eye instead of gaining another one.
** The Diamond Authority contrast with the remaining Crystal Gems in several ways:
*** They both come from opposing social classes and sides of the war. The ruling Diamonds are the oppressors, while the Crystal Gems are the LaResistance whose members are Homeworld outcasts (a taboo fusion between different Gems, a defective Quartz, and a renegade Pearl).
*** Both groups invoke the FourIsDeath trope in different ways — Pink Diamond was [[spoiler:allegedly]] murdered, while Rose willingly died to create a life (Steven). Interestingly, in the case of the Crystal Gems, the FourIsDeath didn't come about until after the Rebellion and the Diamonds' superweapon corrupted all but four of the Crystal Gems, the main characters.
*** They're both dealing with grief over a loved one, but the difference is that the Diamonds didn't have someone to help them understand and cope with their feelings, leading to them dealing with it in rather unhealthy ways. Blue Diamond would be if Pearl never got over her obsession with Rose, and Yellow Diamond would be if Amethyst decided to apply her denial in externally destructive ways. [[spoiler:To further push the point, they're grieving over the ''same person''.]] The song "Familiar" further emphasizes this, as Steven compares the Diamond Authority to the way the Crystal Gems acted at the start of season one.
** The Diamond Authority to Andy [=DeMayo=]; they are all in a way traditionalists (the Gems actually uphold the strict Gem hierarchy) who end up alienating their loved ones due to being stuck in their ways (his extended family for Andy, Pink Diamond for Yellow and Blue).
** The Diamond Authority to the Maheswarans.
** From a design standpoint, Pink Diamond is a deliberate contrast to her matriarch, ''[[GreaterScopeVillain White Diamond]]''. Her hair is poofy with gentle curls against White's spikey AnimeHair, her clothes are a childish blend of a doll's outfit and a ballerina against White's ArtDeco aesthetic and [[TheVamp vampish]] fashion sense, and even her gem is the opposite of White — they are the same cut of gem, but Pink's sits on her belly facing downwards while White's sits on her forehead facing the sky.
** Yellow Diamond to her "sister", Pink Diamond. Pink was a spoiled little brat demanding for her own colony, whereas Yellow was a serious matriarch who colonized multiple planets. [[spoiler:Pink was unaware of the damage she was doing to her colony, whereas Yellow ''wanted'' organic life to be destroyed. It's reflected best in the ideals Pink expressed as Rose Quartz.]] Rose sincerely valued all life and sought to protect it, while Yellow Diamond utterly ''hates'' all organic life, not just humans, and wishes it to be permanently annihilated. Rose loved and cared for each Gem under her command, while Yellow Diamond sees them as mere drones who are rather replaceable. Even their names are similar and both are voiced by Broadway actresses. [[spoiler:However, Pink constantly fails to take her fellow Diamonds' feelings into consideration, whereas Yellow is ''always'' looking out for them.]]
** Also, Yellow Diamond to her other "sister", Blue Diamond. Aside from their masculine/feminine personalities, Yellow Diamond copes with the death of Pink Diamond by completely repressing her own emotions, destroying everything that reminds her of her grief, and sees grief itself as useless feelings.
** Also, Yellow Diamond to Dr.
** Blue Diamond to her "sister", Yellow Diamond. Aside from their colors and masculine/feminine personalities, Blue Diamond constantly and obsessively mourns Pink Diamond, collecting everything related to her to preserve Pink's memory, and is so utterly consumed by her own depression that she neglects her duties as ruler of Homeworld.
** White Diamond personality contrasts perfectly with [[AllLovingHero Pink/Rose/Steven]]; the latter is an extroverted people-lover, and the former is a [[{{Hikikomori}} shut-in]] who doesn't even realize that empathy exists.
** Unlike Yellow, who constantly looks irritated and ready to snap at a moment's notice, White has enough self-control to act calm and loving even when angry, which makes the experience of bearing her wrath even more terrifying.
** White Diamond's Pearl to Yellow Pearl. Both are Pearls who have roles beyond just being servants, but while Yellow Pearl is smug and condescending, Pink Pearl is [[NiceGirl kind]] and outgoing.
** White Diamond's Pearl to Blue Pearl. Both are cared about by their respective owners, but while Blue Pearl is quiet and acts like a normal Pearl, Pink Pearl is cheerful, upbeat, and treats her Diamond like a friend.
** White Diamond's Pearl to the Crystal Gem Pearl, her successor. While the Crystal Gem Pearl acted robotic towards Pink Diamond, but eventually grew beyond her role and helped her stage a rebellion, Pink Pearl acted playful towards Pink Diamond, only to be forcibly removed from her and given to White Diamond.
** White Diamond's Pearl to Spinel.
** Chert is an orange Quartz with the gemstone on her nose, while Flint is a darker Quartz with the gemstone on her chest.
** Lonely Pearl was abandoned by her master and was incapable of moving on from that. Pearl, on the other hand, was abandoned by Rose, but was able to move on with the help of her friends.
** Jasper to Peridot. Peridot is an Era 2 Gem, made without any of the powers Jasper was born with or the amazing constitution Jasper boasts. While they're both incredibly durable, Peridot's physical toughness is played for laughs while Jasper's is always played dead serious. Building on this, Jasper is a KnightOfCerebus to Peridot's often laughably evil nature and own innate goofiness. Most importantly, Peridot was a Gem born on Homeworld that came to Earth and grew to love it dearly. Jasper was an Earth-made Gem that hated Earth with a passion, was fiercely loyal to Homeworld.
** Jasper to Amethyst. Both were born to be soldiers, but Amethyst was grown in the Prime Kindergarten, which was properly planned and had all the right ingredients, yet she came out late, small, and underpowered. Jasper was bred in the Beta Kindergarten, which was a poorly planned rush job by Homeworld, and yet she still came out a perfect super soldier. Where Amethyst is laid back and friendly, Jasper is abusive and hateful.
** Jasper to Eyeball. Both served [[spoiler:Pink Diamond and mourn her, and both also tried to kill Steven. The difference is that Jasper stood down when the Diamonds ordered her not to attack Steven, and she was reasonable enough to hear the full explanation of what happened. What's more, she seems to understand that Steven was not to blame for what happened between them, finally sees that he's not his mother, and will help him with his problems even if she's not good at expressing her complicated feelings. Eyeball, in contrast, tried to murder Steven the minute she realized he ''was'' Rose Quartz reincarnated and has rebelled against Era 3 to get revenge on Steven. She left behind her Ruby Squad and probably most of her common sense. The one thing that can be said is that Jasper doesn't try to murder Steven off the bat and is finally willing to talk to him]].
** Yellow Diamond's Pearl to the Crystal Gem's Pearl: A shrill, egotistical, primped up secretary - in contrast to the self-conscious, multi-talented warrior that we're familiar with.
** Yellow Pearl to Blue Pearl as well, who appears to have neither the voice nor the autonomy of Yellow Pearl.
** Navy to Peridot.
** Navy to [[spoiler:Pink Diamond.
** Whereas Defense Zircon is nervous, hard at work, and ultimately willing to realize that one of her leaders [[spoiler:have likely used Rose as a scapegoat]], Prosecuting Zircon is smug, doesn't even bother to put any real work into condemning "Rose", and attempts to flatter the Diamonds to make her case.
** Blue Diamond's Pearl to both the Crystal Gems' Pearl, Yellow Diamond's Pearl, and White Diamond's Pearl.
** The Famethyst to the Jasper from Yellow Diamond's Court in multiple ways.
*** The contrast is especially striking between different Jaspers. Whereas "ultimate Quartz" Jasper is hulking, loud and belligerent, Skinny is slim, laid-back and friendly.
*** They're also a huge contrast to Amethyst's other family, the Crystal Gems, who are often high-strung, distant, and bad at interpersonal relationships, compared to this easygoing, tight-knit, and loving bunch.
** Aquamarine to Lapis Lazuli; both are blue Gems with water wings and a teardrop-shaped gem.
** Spinel to Pearl. Both were abandoned by Pink Diamond and were deeply hurt by her actions. However, while Pearl had her friends to help her move on from the pain of that loss, Spinel had no one else and was left completely alone. Not only that, but the last order their Diamond ever gave them caused them nothing but grief, Pearl's order to never tell anyone the truth of Rose's identity caused her to watch Steven flounder about trying to comprehend the magnitude of his mother's actions and unable to do anything about it, while Spinel was told to stay where she was and literally did so for 6,000 years. Also, both were noncombatant Gems who figured out ways to use their abilities effectively in combat, with Pearl adapting her natural grace and agility from dancing [[DanceBattler into her fighting style]] while Spinel uses her cartoonish physiology to [[ConfusionFu confuse and evade]] her opponents.
** Spinel to Steven Universe. Both of them were kind, goofy, and playful beings who were negatively affected by Pink Diamond's actions, and [[UsedToBeASweetKid lost their cheerfulness over time]] in addition to undergoing SanitySlippage. But while Steven deals with his grief by burying his emotions and refusing to come clean to others about his problems, Spinel deals with her grief by ''lashing out'' onto others (and the Earth) over her problems. Despite acting otherwise, [[AntiRoleModel neither Spinel nor Steven's ways of coping with their trauma are healthy for themselves or those around them in the slightest.]]
** Like the Gem Mutants of season 2, Rutile Twins are a permafusion caused by two Gems becoming permanently physically joined. However, the Rutile twins were born this way and are two (mostly) whole gems joined together, and not the artificial joining of multiple agonized Gem fragments. This being the case, they are fully in control of their body and faculties as opposed to the constant pain, anger and confusion the Gem Mutants displayed.
** Padparadscha to the Crystal Gems' Sapphire.
** Cherry Quartz to Jasper, given how both are muscular Quartzes who are seen interacting with Steven.
** Andy [=DeMayo=] to Greg Universe. While Greg is open-minded, even-tempered, forgiving, makes no big deal of change for the most part, and is usually willing to compromise with others, Andy is the exact opposite — judgmental, hot-tempered, willing to hold onto a grudge, staunchly traditionalist, and stubborn-minded.
** Andy [=DeMayo=] to Bismuth.
** As of [[Recap/StevenUniverseS5E18ASinglePaleRose "A Single Pale Rose"]], to [[spoiler:Yellow and Blue Diamond. They are both in a way traditionalists (the Gems actually uphold the strict Gem hierarchy) who end up alienating their loved ones due to being stuck in their ways (his extended family for Andy, Pink Diamond for Yellow and Blue). They also share a nephew/nephew figure in Steven who they both don't initially know of or recognize. The differences so far is that Andy eventually reconciled with his family before it was too late, while Pink Diamond felt so alienated she faked her death and took up a new identity in the hope of bringing some change. Another thing to note is that they both initially didn't recognize Steven as their nephew/a Diamond and had initial hostility towards him — although Andy quickly learned the truth while the Diamonds are still unaware. Also, Andy's reactions to Steven's Gem family (Peridot, Lapis, and later the other Gems) was initially very hostile, while Blue's first meeting with Steven's human family (Greg) was warm as they discussed their shared loses.]]
** Lars Barriga to Steven Universe. They both try their hardest to be accepted into a group of three people (Cool Kids and Crystal Gems, respectively). Both also have their own share of insecurities. However, Lars is a grumpy jerk with hardly anyone really liking him, but ''does'' have a kind side. Steven is a CheerfulChild who is well-liked by nearly everyone, but is just as flawed as everyone else. This is confirmed in a [[http://cartoonnetwork.tumblr.com/post/168554925588 podcast]]:

** * Amethyst revealed toward the end of Season 3 to also be this to Jasper.
** * Amethyst also one to Steven. Both are fun-loving and jokey and generally considered the most childish of the Crystal Gems, but whereas Steven is positive and optimistic Amethyst does it out of her insecurities and self-loathing.
** * Pearl to Steven, as two gems that are arguably the closest to Rose.
** * Pearl to Blue Diamond.
** * Rose Quartz To her son, Steven Universe.
** * Connie Maheswaran to Steven Universe.
** * Connie Maheswaran to Pearl.
** * Connie Maheswaran to Greg Universe.
** * Connie Maheswaran to Peedee Fryman. They are both mature for their age and have proven to be slightly more cynical in regards to Steven's endless optimism. Peedee is more cynical, while Connie is realistic (not entirely overly optimistic, not completely cynical).
** * Connie Maheswaran to Ronaldo Fryman.
** * Connie Maheswaran to Pink Diamond of all people, concerning their relationship with their parental figures.
** * Peridot to Jasper.
** * Peridot to Amethyst.
** * Lapis Lazuli to Steven Universe.
** * Lapis Lazuli to Connie Maheswaran.
** * Lapis Lazuli to Peridot.
** * Ruby with Sapphire.
** * Bismuth to Jasper.
** * Bismuth to Peridot.
** * Greg Universe to Marty.
** * Greg Universe to Rose Quartz. For all Rose's personal power and legendary ability, it's Greg's empathy and compassion that makes there son Steven a hero.
** * Opal to Garnet, though it only makes sense in retrospect with the revelation of Garnet’s true nature.
** * Sugilite fusion goes much smoother than Opal's, and her personality is the complete opposite.
** * Sugilite also one to Sardonyx, who is powerful, but more careful, controlled and easygoing, while Sugilite is reckless and headstrong.
** * Sardonyx a direct contrast to Sugilite as much as Amethyst is to Pearl — careful and precise in comparison to the other fusion's brute force.
*** ** Also, ultimately using Sardonyx to destroy the Communications Hub was a worse idea than using Sugilite, but for opposite reasons.
** * Alexandrite a good guy fusion, opposing the (mostly) evil Malachite. Besides being kaiju-sized fusions, Alexandrite has a fire breath attack, while Malachite has ice powers.
** * Smoky Quartz to Sugilite, which is made up of the worst parts of Amethyst's and Garnet's personalities — their pride and recklessness. Smoky Quartz is brought out by the natural friendship Steven has with Amethyst.
** * Smoky Quartz laid-back attitude also contrasts with Sardonyx's [[LargeHam over-the-top]] personality.
** * Malachite is more or less the ''opposite'' of Garnet's truly loving, genuine fusion, instead being born purely out of desperation and savagery, and ultimately used with apathy towards the other party on one side and an intention to defeat the other on the other side.
** * Rhodonite to Garnet, despite both of them being love-based perma-fusions.
** * Fluorite to the Cluster Gems [[spoiler:as well as the Cluster]].
** * Fluorite to Malachite. They're similar in that both of them have highly warped inhumanoid forms. However, while Malachite's components hated each other and one spent an entire season trying to keep the other prisoner, Fluorite's components are in harmony and work together, albeit slowly.
** * Fluorite to Alexandrite, who is also another fusion between multiple willing and loving components, but the relationship between components is one of family/friendship, not romantic, and thus highly unstable. And unlike Fluorite, Alexandrite is not a casual permafusion, but one used mostly for combat and in highly dangerous situations.
** * Fluorite to Garnet. Both are love-based permafusions whose component Gems are equal in number, but Garnet (two Gems) is fairly exclusive ("Three's a crowd.") while Fluorite's components (six Gems) are in an open relationship that gladly accepts other compatible Gems.
** * Similar to Malachite, Bluebird Azurite is one to Garnet. Bluebird is a fusion between a Ruby and a refined and small blue gem, but is built entirely on hate rather than love. She's a mishmash of her components' colors, which don't blend on any part of her, and she loses an eye instead of gaining another one.
** * The Diamond Authority contrast with the remaining Crystal Gems in several ways:
*** ** They both come from opposing social classes and sides of the war. The ruling Diamonds are the oppressors, while the Crystal Gems are the LaResistance whose members are Homeworld outcasts (a taboo fusion between different Gems, a defective Quartz, and a renegade Pearl).
*** ** Both groups invoke the FourIsDeath trope in different ways — Pink Diamond was [[spoiler:allegedly]] murdered, while Rose willingly died to create a life (Steven). Interestingly, in the case of the Crystal Gems, the FourIsDeath didn't come about until after the Rebellion and the Diamonds' superweapon corrupted all but four of the Crystal Gems, the main characters.
*** ** They're both dealing with grief over a loved one, but the difference is that the Diamonds didn't have someone to help them understand and cope with their feelings, leading to them dealing with it in rather unhealthy ways.
** * The Diamond Authority to Andy [=DeMayo=]; they are all in a way traditionalists (the Gems actually uphold the strict Gem hierarchy) who end up alienating their loved ones due to being stuck in their ways (his extended family for Andy, Pink Diamond for Yellow and Blue).
** * The Diamond Authority to the Maheswarans.
** * From a design standpoint, Pink Diamond is a deliberate contrast to her matriarch, ''[[GreaterScopeVillain White Diamond]]''.
** * Yellow Diamond to her "sister", Pink Diamond.
** * Also, Yellow Diamond to her other "sister", Blue Diamond. Aside from their masculine/feminine personalities, Yellow Diamond copes with the death of Pink Diamond by completely repressing her own emotions, destroying everything that reminds her of her grief, and sees grief itself as useless feelings.
** * Also, Yellow Diamond to Dr.
** * Blue Diamond to her "sister", Yellow Diamond. Aside from their colors and masculine/feminine personalities, Blue Diamond constantly and obsessively mourns Pink Diamond, collecting everything related to her to preserve Pink's memory, and is so utterly consumed by her own depression that she neglects her duties as ruler of Homeworld.
** * White Diamond personality contrasts perfectly with [[AllLovingHero Pink/Rose/Steven]]; the latter is an extroverted people-lover, and the former is a [[{{Hikikomori}} shut-in]] who doesn't even realize that empathy exists.
** * Unlike Yellow, who constantly looks irritated and ready to snap at a moment's notice, White has enough self-control to act calm and loving even when angry, which makes the experience of bearing her wrath even more terrifying.
** * White Diamond's Pearl to Yellow Pearl. Both are Pearls who have roles beyond just being servants, but while Yellow Pearl is smug and condescending, Pink Pearl is [[NiceGirl kind]] and outgoing.
** * White Diamond's Pearl to Blue Pearl. Both are cared about by their respective owners, but while Blue Pearl is quiet and acts like a normal Pearl, Pink Pearl is cheerful, upbeat, and treats her Diamond like a friend.
** * White Diamond's Pearl to the Crystal Gem Pearl, her successor. While the Crystal Gem Pearl acted robotic towards Pink Diamond, but eventually grew beyond her role and helped her stage a rebellion, Pink Pearl acted playful towards Pink Diamond, only to be forcibly removed from her and given to White Diamond.
** * White Diamond's Pearl to Spinel.
** * Chert is an orange Quartz with the gemstone on her nose, while Flint is a darker Quartz with the gemstone on her chest.
** * Lonely Pearl was abandoned by her master and was incapable of moving on from that. Pearl, on the other hand, was abandoned by Rose, but was able to move on with the help of her friends.
** * Jasper to Peridot.
** * Jasper to Amethyst.
** * Jasper to Eyeball.
** * Yellow Diamond's Pearl to the Crystal Gem's Pearl: A shrill, egotistical, primped up secretary - in contrast to the self-conscious, multi-talented warrior that we're familiar with.
** * Yellow Pearl to Blue Pearl as well, who appears to have neither the voice nor the autonomy of Yellow Pearl.
** * Navy to Peridot.
** * Navy to [[spoiler:Pink Diamond.
** * Whereas Defense Zircon is nervous, hard at work, and ultimately willing to realize that one of her leaders [[spoiler:have likely used Rose as a scapegoat]], Prosecuting Zircon is smug, doesn't even bother to put any real work into condemning "Rose", and attempts to flatter the Diamonds to make her case.
** * Blue Diamond's Pearl to both the Crystal Gems' Pearl, Yellow Diamond's Pearl, and White Diamond's Pearl.
** * The Famethyst to the Jasper from Yellow Diamond's Court in multiple ways.
*** ** The contrast is especially striking between different Jaspers. Whereas "ultimate Quartz" Jasper is hulking, loud and belligerent, Skinny is slim, laid-back and friendly.
*** ** They're also a huge contrast to Amethyst's other family, the Crystal Gems, who are often high-strung, distant, and bad at interpersonal relationships, compared to this easygoing, tight-knit, and loving bunch.
** * Aquamarine to Lapis Lazuli; both are blue Gems with water wings and a teardrop-shaped gem.
** * Spinel to Pearl.
** * Spinel to Steven Universe.
** * Like the Gem Mutants of season 2, Rutile Twins are a permafusion caused by two Gems becoming permanently physically joined. However, the Rutile twins were born this way and are two (mostly) whole gems joined together, and not the artificial joining of multiple agonized Gem fragments. This being the case, they are fully in control of their body and faculties as opposed to the constant pain, anger and confusion the Gem Mutants displayed.
** * Padparadscha to the Crystal Gems' Sapphire.
** * Cherry Quartz to Jasper, given how both are muscular Quartzes who are seen interacting with Steven.
** * Andy [=DeMayo=] to Greg Universe.
** * Andy [=DeMayo=] to Bismuth.
** * As of [[Recap/StevenUniverseS5E18ASinglePaleRose "A Single Pale Rose"]], to [[spoiler:Yellow and Blue Diamond.
** * Lars Barriga to Steven Universe.

** Peedee Fryman to Steven Universe. He's the first child around Steven's age introduced, they both come from families where a lot of responsibility is placed on them, and they both have {{Missing Mom}}s. However, Peedee's cynical world-weariness exactly mirrors Steven's boundless energy and optimism.
** Ronaldo Fryman to Lars Barriga. Both slackers with a certain degree of egotism, but have otherwise opposite personalities and character flaws. Lars is unpleasant but more or less functional and so obsessed with being seen as cool that he ends up hurting the people he's closest to. Ronaldo is more friendly but mentally unstable and cares so little about what people think that he's a social outcast. Years ago they were friends, but their different priorities ended up putting an end to that.
** Ronaldo Fryman to Jamie.
** Priyanka Maheswaran mothering is a stark contrast to Rose's, though to what degree is only obvious once we get a better idea of Rose's character.
*** Yellow Diamond is a better example, regarding their similar parenting skills on Connie and Pink Diamond, respectively.
** Bill Dewey to Greg Universe.
** Onion to Steven Universe. Both are given a lot of [[FreeRangeChildren freedom]] for their age, they're the [[TheBabyOfTheBunch youngest]] of their families, and their [[DisappearedDad fathers]] have some [[WhenYouComingHomeDad absence]] in their lives (moreso with Onion than Steven); they even [[SignificantDoubleCasting share]] the same voice actor (their fathers also have the same VA as well). However, Steven is often seen helping out the citizens of Beach City and is very well-behaved; Onion commits numerous illegal activities during his free time and has a weird set of morals. While Steven is a major NiceGuy, Onion is a jerk with a very-well HiddenHeartOfGold.
** Jamie to Ronaldo.
** Kevin has the same color scheme as Stevonnie (clothes, hair, and skin), encouraging the viewer to compare them directly. Even his name echoes Stevonnie's: it sounds like the first part of "Connie" and the second part of "Steven", instead of vice versa. However, while Stevonnie is the embodiment of respecting boundaries and is a component of two nice people, Kevin doesn't care about someone's space if he likes them and is a complete jerk.

--->'''Steven:''' Where did you get these? I thought they stopped making them!\\
'''Pearl:''' Well, we heard that too, and since they're your favorite...\\
'''Amethyst:''' We went out and stole a bunch!\\
'''Pearl:''' ''[annoyed grunt]'' I went back and ''paid'' for them.
** Connie Maheswaran to Pink Diamond of all people, concerning their relationship with their parental figures.
** Bismuth to Jasper.
** Bismuth to Peridot.
** Sugilite fusion goes much smoother than Opal's, and her personality is the complete opposite.
*** Also, ultimately using Sardonyx to destroy the Communications Hub was a worse idea than using Sugilite, but for opposite reasons.
** The Diamond Authority to the Maheswarans.
** Chert is an orange Quartz with the gemstone on her nose, while Flint is a darker Quartz with the gemstone on her chest.
** Navy to [[spoiler:Pink Diamond.
** The Famethyst to the Jasper from Yellow Diamond's Court in multiple ways.
** Cherry Quartz to Jasper, given how both are muscular Quartzes who are seen interacting with Steven.
-->'''Rebecca:''' Steven and Lars have always been.. counter to each other. Even in the pilot. As the show has gone on, it's become even and even more true. They are so opposed to each other; Lars is someone who just can't accept help and Steven just wants to help everyone. That's what makes them... have such a problem with each other. Lars is really putting on a façade all the time, and Steven is incapable of putting on a façade. That opposition that they have to each other is one of the oldest things in the show.
** This extends to Lars Barriga and Steven Universe relationships with their best friends/implied love interests. Lars' friendship with Sadie is turbulent and dysfunctional in part because he's too selfish and insecure to open up to her. Conversely, Steven's friendship with Connie is strong and healthy largely because he's (usually) open and honest about his feelings, allowing Connie to support him the way Sadie wants to support Lars. Though ironically, [[spoiler:they ''both'' end up abandoning their closest friends at the climax of Season 4; with Lars abandoning Sadie out of fear and Steven abandoning Connie in a [[GuiltComplex guilt-induced]] HeroicSacrifice.]]
** Priyanka Maheswaran mothering is a stark contrast to Rose's, though to what degree is only obvious once we get a better idea of Rose's character.
*** Yellow Diamond is a better example, regarding their similar parenting skills on Connie and Pink Diamond, respectively.
** Bill Dewey to Greg Universe.
