* InnocentlyInsensitive: Arnie doesn't have the capacity to understand that it's illegal and dangerous to climb the water tower, that he should get out of the bathtub when he's finished having bath, and it's implied that he's literal minded. Not helping matters is that Arnie doesn't remember his lessons or learn from his experiences. Although Arnie is loved by his family, they don't have the necessary character qualities to look after him and have their own life stresses, with Gilbert being deeply stressed in his role as the man of the house, and Ellen being too young and less patient to take on the responsibility of taking care of Arnie.

* InspirationallyDisadvantaged: Completely averted with Arnie, who's been described as an "uncomfortably accurate" depiction of a developmentally disabled person. Although he's a good kid and everyone knows him well enough to know that Arnie can't understand what he's doing wrong, it's clear that his siblings are too young and lack the necessary character qualities to handle the immense responsibility of taking care of him.
* IWantMyBelovedToBeHappy: Mrs. Carver graciously releasing Gilbert to Becky, knowing she has the youth and joyful heart to give him the happiness she never could.

He's definitely not a bad kid, and people are nice to him, but it's clear that taking care of him is an incredibly heavy burden on his family.

* TeensAreMonsters: Ellen is vain, self-absorbed, and ungrateful toward her elder siblings, particularly Gilbert. She never helps out around the house, and she's too impatient and immature to take care of Arnie; the one time she's required to look after him, she ends up knocking him to the ground and jerking him around by the hair.

** Later on in the movie, Gilbert loses his cool - due to DisasterDominoes caused by Arnie's actions[[note]]He's running around the house and accidentally tackles Amy, who was carrying his birthday cake, forcing Gilbert to buy a replacement from Foodland. He then runs into the owner of the grocery store he works at and who he has assured that he never visits Foodland, making him seem like a liar, and once he gets back home, it doesn't take long for Arnie to start eating the replacement cake and refuse to take a bath afterwards[[/note]], leading him to slap Arnie around, after being so protective of him.him up until that point.

* DreadfulMusician: Ellen is quite bad at playing the trumpet, though her poor playing could be justified by her getting her braces off, which can hinder someone's ability to play a brass instrument.

** The kids of Endora like to hang around the Grape residence, hoping to have a chance to catch a glimpse of and laugh at, the morbidly obese Bonnie. Curiously enough, they are never shown to bully Arnie, and are actually very accepting of him, however, some of this might be because of Gilbert's "Nobody Touches Arnie" rule.

* OlderThanTheyLook: Arnie, who's supposedly having his 18th birthday, doesn't look a day older than 12. Interestingly, Leonardo [=DiCaprio=] was actually 19 when the film was made, making him a year ''older'' than his character.
