The film is notable for being filmed entirely in Mondrian/split-screen multi-frame compositions, making the "fragments" of the title literal as well as figurative.

In a unique promotion tactic, the director and producers initiated a project shortly before the film's release titled ''Tracey: Re-Fragmented''. The soundtrack and all raw footage shot for the movie was released under a Creative Commons license as torrent downloads, in the first-ever instance in film history of a director releasing free downloads of a film alongside the film's theatrical release. Fans were free to use the footage for personal projects or new trailers and re-edits for the film. A contest was held for the best uses of the footage, with the winner receiving a Final Cut Pro prize pack and having their material included on the DVD release.
