''The First Deadly Sin'' is a 1980 film directed by Brian G. Hutton.
Detective Edward Delaney (Music/FrankSinatra) is a New York homicide cop weeks away from retirement. He picks up what promises to be his last case: a man was murdered on the sidewalk by an unknown assailant who struck him in the head with an unknown weapon--all Delaney has to go on is that the weapon the killer used had a round, tapered end.
He consults an expert in medieval weaponry, who tells him that the murder weapon must be a modern-day tool. The weapons expert does some research on his own and discovers that the murder weapon is an ice axe. Meanwhile, Delaney finds out about another attack not all that far away in which the victim suffered similar wounds to the skull. He looks at past crime reports and discovers that a serial killer is stalking Manhattan.
Meanwhile, his wife Barbara (Creator/FayeDunaway) is dying. Barbara went into the hospital for kidney stones, but doctors found her kidney badly diseased and damaged and had to remove it, and Barbara is growing weaker as infection rages in her body.
