* WhatMightHaveBeen: The first version of the movie had the Klopeks killing Ray and getting away with it. After this, and another ending where the Klopeks are completely innocent, tested poorly, the [[spoiler: compromise ending where the Klopeks are serial killers but fail to kill Ray]] worked much better.

[[quoteright:291:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/203502the-burbs-posters_1908.jpg]]

An unusually grim 1989 comedy about a group of "normal" suburbanites who suspect that something very sinister is going on in the home of their rarely-seen foreign neighbors. It's directed by Creator/JoeDante and stars Creator/TomHanks, Creator/BruceDern and Creator/CarrieFisher.

** You can tell something is a little off with [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kdCU7rjUSVc that logo]] because it's still the '70s/'80s Universal logo, which isn't CGI in other movies, but this globe obviously is. This is because of another studio (Creator/IndustrialLightAndMagic) doing this particular logo.

* MistakenForMurderer: The theory that Walter was murdered by the Klopeks comes crashing down when Walt comes back home from the hospital. The reason the Klopeks had his toupee and his magazines was because he asked them to retrieve his mail. And the femur they thought was Walter's? Why, that just belonged to [[spoiler:[[SubvertedTrope someone they DID kill, obviously]].]]

* BrokenAesop: [[spoiler: What could have been a lesson in tolerance and paranoia becomes subverted in the end, when it turns out they really are evil! Dang.]]
** FamilyUnfriendlyAesop: [[spoiler: At a certain point, behavior and circumstances can be so suspicious and bizarre that "there's probably an innocent explanation" can be dangerously irresponsible (finding actual human remains is probably well past that point). This makes more sense today in the age of "if you see something, say something". Though doing the investigation yourself instead of going to the professionals ''is'' a really, really bad idea.]]
