* AlternateSelf: Given that footage was used in Series/CrisisOnInfiniteEarths2019 and this film takes place on the post-Crisis Earth-12 in the ''Arrowverse'' multiverse, Amanda Waller has counterparts on [[Characters/ArrowverseARGUSAndTaskForceX Earth-Prime]], [[Characters/SmallvilleGovernment Earth-167]] and [[Characters/DCEUTaskForceXOfficialsAndAgents an undesignated Earth]]. Abin Sur also resembles a human named [[Film/Aquaman2018 Thomas Curry]] and Thomas Kalmaku looks just like the first [[Film/TheSuicideSquad Ratcatcher]], both characters existing on [[Franchise/DCExtendedUniverse an undesignated Earth]]. The Corps and Kilowog are also shown to [[Film/ZackSnydersJusticeLeague exist in this universe]]. Hal, the Guardians and the rest of the Corps also all exist on [[Characters/SmallvilleClarksAllies Earth-167]], though [[Main/DeadAlternateCounterpart Hal, the Guardians and Tomar-Re]] are deceased. Finally Hal has two more counterparts on [[Characters/Batman1966Heroes Earth-66]] and [[ComicBook/New52 Earth-N52]], and the Green Lantern identity is used by individuals on [[Characters/ArrowverseOtherEarths Eath-D]] and the post-Crisis [[Series/Stargirl2020 Earth-2]].
** Also, Hal's nephew Jason is having a "Superman-themed" birthday part. Since it is established in dialogue that Abin Sur is the first alien that Earth has met, this implies that Superman on Earth-12 is a fictional character.
** As revealed by the ''Crisis on Infinite Earths Giant'' tie-in comic Sinestro, Kilowog, Tomar-Re and the Corps also existed in the pre-Crisis version of Earth-12.

* CrazyPeoplePlayChess: Hector Hammond, shortly before being infused with yellow fear energy, is seen playing chess on his computer.
* CreditsGag: the closing credits takes place in a montage of seven quasars, each quasar a specific color of the rainbow. This is based on the emotional electromagnetic spectrum, a Green Lantern theorem that states each color is based on a specific emotion.

The film was intended to launch the DC Comics counterpart to the Franchise/MarvelCinematicUniverse like ''Film/IronMan1'' did, but ultimately this was not realized due to the film's poor financial returns. Instead, Creator/WarnerBrothers decided to retool ''Film/ManOfSteel'' into the actual launchpad for what would become the Franchise/DCExtendedUniverse, ultimately with greater success--although the DCEU's version of the [[Film/JusticeLeague2017 Justice League]] conspicuously lacked a Green Lantern in its roster, possibly because due to the filmmakers wishing to avoid association with this film. An officially licensed Green Lantern television series set in the DCEU titled ''Green Lantern Corps'' was in development for several years, but it failed to materialize before Warner Brothers announced its plans to retire the DCEU brand in 2022. Now that the newly restructured Warner Bros. Discovery has announced a new series of Creator/DCComics film adaptations helmed by Creator/JamesGunn and Peter Safran, another officially licensed Green Lantern show titled ''Lanterns'' is currently in development.

Instead, Creator/WarnerBrothers decided to retool ''Film/ManOfSteel'' into the actual launchpad for what would become the Franchise/DCExtendedUniverse, ultimately with greater success. Having got off the ground, the DCEU is planned to feature a ContinuityReboot of the ''Green Lantern'' series with ''Green Lantern Corps'' (starring Hal Jordan, John Stewart and other prominent Green Lanterns), with possible appearances from the characters prior to that. Greg Berlanti and Marc Guggenheim, who wrote the screenplay from this film, would go on to create the tv show ''Series/{{Arrow}}'' which would be the first series in the Franchise/{{Arrowverse}}. In the 2019-2020 crossover event ''Series/CrisisOnInfiniteEarths2019'' footage was used from this film to confirm it takes place on the post-Crisis Earth-12 in the Arrowverse multiverse, which includes the DCEU and other DC live-action properties.

* LiveActionAdaptation: The film is a loose adaptation of the "Secret Origin" arc of Geoff Johns' run, particularly in that the film focuses on Hal Jordan's beginning as a Green Lantern Corpsman and his first encounter with his enemy Hector Hammond. A reissue of the "Secret Origin" trade paperback was even published with a cover depicting this continuity's Hal Jordan as a tie-in.
