* EvenEvilHasStandards: While not ''evil'' per se, IG Geetha Prabhakaran and her fellow officers are ruthless and more than prepared to use any means necessary, including [[JackBauerInterrogationTechnique custodial torture]], to force a confession from George Kutty and his family. However, even Geetha, and most of the other officers, cannot stomach Constable Sahadevan's [[WouldHurtAChild brutalization of a young girl]].

* AccidentalMurder: The murder of Varun by [[spoiler: Anju]] is this. [[spoiler: She only intended to smash Varun's cellphone, which contained a video of her naked, to prevent him from blackmailing her (or her mother) for sex...but ended up hitting him on the head and cracking his skull instead.]]
** In the sequel, we're introduced to Jose George, who accidentally killed his brother-in-law and spent six years in prison for it. He was fleeing from the police after committing manslaughter when [[spoiler: he witnessed George Kutty emerging from the construction site of the new police station, after burying Varun's body during the events of the first film.]]

** His plan in the sequel verges on a XanatosGambit. [[spoiler: Anticipating that the police would uncover the body buried beneath the police station someday, George Kutty spends ''years'' preparing for that eventuality. Enlisting the aid of a renowned screenwriter, he plans to produce a film (loosely based on his family's murder of Varun and subsequent cover-up), and has a novel based on the proposed script published under the latter's name for 'copyright purposes'. He also befriends a local gravedigger (who digs up the body of a youth matching Varun's age and build for him) and a security guard at the local forensics institute (which gives him access to the place). Thus, when the police discover Varun's skeletal remains and send it to the forensics institute, George Kutty substitutes it for the remains the gravedigger provided him with. Under police interrogation, he confesses to Varun's manslaughter (claiming he mistook him for a burglar), and agrees to provide evidence that proves he acted alone. In court, he then recants his confession, claiming it was coerced. His lawyer is able to use the novel published by the screenwriter to claim that the police cooked up a false case against him based on a fictitious work. And the DNA results for the skeletal remains prove that they are not Varun's, causing the case to collapse. Even if the gambit with the substitution of the body had failed, George Kutty would have taken the fall for the murder on his own, with his family safe from prosecution, leading to a positive outcome for him either way.]]

* BatmanGambit: [[spoiler: While he works towards creating a false alibi for the family, George Kutty's masterstroke lies in his disposal of Varun's body. He expected the police to extract a confession, sooner or later, from his youngest daughter Anu, that the body is buried in his backyard. So he removes the body from there (replacing it with a dead calf to account for what Anu saw) and buries it elsewhere (in the foundations of the town's new ''police station'' of all places!) So when the police dig up his backyard and find nothing but the calf's corpse, this not only effectively exonerates the family, but embarasses the police and leads to a wave of public anger against them for [[WouldHurtAChild brutalizing a young girl]].]]

* [[spoiler: KarmaHoudini]]: [[spoiler: Played with. George Kutty and his family succeed in getting away with committing and concealing Varun's murder. However its clear that the case will continue to cast a shadow over their lives - the police, embarassed by their failure, will continue their investigations, and the burden of keeping the dark secret itself will take its toll on the family. By the time of the sequel, six years later, Anju suffers from seizures brought on by PTSD, Rani lives in perpetual fear that they will be discovered, and the family has lost much of the public sympathy they once enjoyed. It is clear that George Kutty is condemned to spend his life being CrazyPrepared to safeguard his family against the police's next move.]]

Added DiffLines:

* WouldHurtAChild: Constable Sahadevan is not above brutalizing George Kutty's minor daughters (including his younger daughter Anu who's a ''sixth grader'') in order to force a confession from them. This ultimately backfires on the police investigation, leading to a welspring of sympathy for the family.

** The sequel has one as well. [[spoiler: Bastin is ordered to stop any investigation into Varun's death, and Georgekutty and his family are let go again, seemingly for good. However, Georgekutty anonymously sends Geetha and Prabhakar Varun's remains to conduct his last rites, with Bastin convincing Geetha that Georgekutty's life is his punishment as he will forever have to fear the law finding him (and an eavesdropping Georgekutty seems to agree), and the whole film has made it clear that the family's life will never be the same again.]]

* AssholeVictim: Varun, obviously - it's hard to get more asshole than threatening to leak a video of your naked classmate unless said classmate (or her mother) sleeps with you. Deconstructed as the film goes on, however - Geetha still loved him and is driven to find him or his killer. Deconstructed even further in the sequel - the death has remained traumatic to the whole family, with Anju suffering from epilepsy and untreated PTSD.
