a tribe of caveman, so the Boiling Isles is an even more confusing place to someone like her.

* LikeADuckTakesToWater: Luz adusts to life in the Boiling Isles surprisingly quickly. She even manages to understand the concept of Raine's pronouns after Eda explains it to her a single time.

* WhyDidItHaveToBeSnakes: As a result of her previous encounter with them, Luz has a fear of hyenas. Of course, the problem is when she first goes to Hexside, one of her teachers resembles a hyena.

fic, however, they were able to write [[https://archiveofourown.org/works/48909196 an epilogue]] to tie up any loose ends.

* ForWantOfANail:
** Rather than being forced to take her there, Eda decides to take Luz to the Covention for her first outing in the Boiling Isles, mainly to teach her about some of her world’s culture. They then encounter Lilith (who is unaccompanied by Amity here), and she is much more paranoid about Luz because of the perception that humans are dangerous creatures, and in her anger, Luz bites her arm. After giving her sister a much-deserved punch to the nose, Eda chooses to take Luz home, meaning Eda and Lilith never have their witches’ duel.
** Since Luz never met Willow and snuck into Hexside while pretending to be an Abomination, she wasn’t banned from the school, meaning it was easier for Eda to enroll her as a student in the Potion Track, albeit as a part-time student.
** Luz falls for Amity first in this fic instead of the other way around.
** Instead of challenging Amity to a witches duel at the Covention to get Amity to apologize for stepping on King’s cupcake and to prove that humans can be witches too, Luz instead challenges Boscha to a witches duel as a way to make sure she won’t tell anyone that she’s a human. Unlike in canon, Luz doesn’t even have the light glyph yet, but she still manages to beat Boscha with her physical prowess and strategy.
** Rather than befriending Edric and Emira in a bid to get to know Amity better, Luz is convinced by the twins to hang out with them after they stand up for her against some of Amity’s insults.
** Eda tells Luz and King about her curse after Luz becomes a student at Hexside, and a few chapters later, she discovers the light glyph through a flash of lightning.
** Eda takes Luz to the Knee right after Luz discovers the light glyph in an attempt to help her learn more spells. Luz still upsets the Slitherbeast, but instead, Amity let her use her training wand, leading to her trapping Luz in the same prison she eventually discovers the ice glyph in. Finally, after killing the Slitherbeast, Luz also discovers the fire glyph soon afterwards.
** The plant glyph is discovered by Luz during a drawing session with Eda instead of her inspecting a flower.
** Eda is still captured by Lilith and the two sisters eventually lose their magic, but the context is changed to [[spoiler:Eda being hit by one of Belos’ spells and Lilith being branded a covenless witch and ''and'' losing her Palisman on top of that]].
** Amity manages to successfully burn one of Willow’s memories without damaging her mind… [[spoiler:only to accidentally burn ''Luz’s'' memories instead because she took part in the class for extra credit. When Willow and Gus find out, they have Eda send Amity and Willow into Luz’s mind. Amity and Willow try their best to fix her memories, but after being traumatized by some of the darker ones, they beg Inner Luz to finish fixing Luz’s mind for them]].
** Hunter goes undercover as Caleb not for the purpose of finding new recruits for the Emperor’s Coven, but to get more information on Luz.
** Luz and Amity start dating before Grom, meaning there’s no misunderstanding with the invitation. In addition, Luz is made the Grom Queen instead of Amity, who soon volunteers to take Luz’s place. Even with Luz’s help, Amity is unable to stop Grom, and Bump casts a dangerous spell that will force Grom to slumber for ten years, [[CastFromHitPoints in exchange for the same amount of time from his life]].
** [[spoiler:Vee is still a clone created by Belos, but she's a human/witch hybrid instead of a basilisk. Not long afterward, Darius essentially kidnaps both her and Hunter to get them away from Belos. While Hunter goes to live with Darius, Vee, now calling herself Vanessa, goes to live at the Owl House with Eda and Luz]].
** [[spoiler:Because she isn't a basilisk, Vanessa can't simply change her form like in canon, so instead, she uses a concealment stone to take on a form she prefers to use]].
** Instead of Luz, [[spoiler:Vanessa]] joins Lilith and King on their journey to the island where King was born. In addition, since Eda knows about it, [[spoiler:she lets Vanessa borrow Owlbert for the ride while Lilith uses Raine's Palisman instead of her own]].

''[[https://archiveofourown.org/works/42273474/chapters/118807273 Unfamiliar and Hostile]]'' is a ''WesternAnimation/TheOwlHouse'' fanfic written by [[https://archiveofourown.org/users/CrustySoap/pseuds/CrustySoap CrustySoap]].

Humanity is still very young by the time a certain teenager stumbles into the Demon Realm. Without the help of her tribe, she'll need to rely on both her own abilities and the knowledge of a woman with an affinity for owls.

Eda Clawthorne didn't expect anything out of the ordinary for the day. She was selling various bones and herbs that she'd acquired from the human realm when she heard a strangled cry from within her tent.

!!''Unfamiliar and Hostile'' contains examples of:
* AchievementsInIgnorance: This is how Luz and Eda discover the plant glyph. When Luz is teaching Eda how to draw as a way for the two to bond, Luz makes a few tweaks to [[https://iili.io/Hq1Xcjj.jpg Eda’s crude drawing]], creating a little sapling in the process.
* AdaptationalAngstUpgrade:
** Luz already had a tougher life than in canon prior to coming to the Boiling Isles, but things only got worse for her when [[spoiler:she was molested by Emperor Belos and developed body dysmorphia as a result and ''then'' she had some of her memories burnt by Amity]].
** As a result of her curse, Eda [[spoiler:suffered from a miscarriage, which was implied to have been the cause of her earlier breakup with Raine in this fic]].
** Lilith was [[spoiler:sexually abused by Belos multiple times in the past]].
* AdaptationalBackstoryChange: Luz still stumbles into the Demon Realm thanks to Eda’s portal, but here, she’s a cave person running from a hyena. While Eda chooses to bring Luz back home later, they learn Luz’s tribe has already left, so Eda takes Luz in as her daughter.
* AdaptationalDumbass: Due to being a cavewoman, Luz isn’t nearly as smart as she is in canon. It’s [[ZigZaggingTrope Zig-Zagged]] because Luz is still a very quick learner, not only managing to speak the common tongue used by the residents of the Boiling Isles, but she’s even able to understand the pronouns Raine uses.
* AdaptationalEarlyAppearance:
** Raine reunites with Eda in Chapter 12, which takes place right after the events of “Covention”.
** [[spoiler:Eda gains her harpy form before the events of Season 2]].
** Hunter appears before the events of “Separate Tides”.
* AdaptationalJerkass:
** Thanks to her primal instincts, Luz is more prone to violence than in canon.
** Lilith is much more dismissive to Luz than she was during their first interaction.
* AdaptationalLateAppearance:
** Principal Bump, Willow, Gus, and Amity don’t officially appear until Luz enrolls in Hexside, which was after the events of "Covention".
** Luz doesn’t start discovering the glyphs until after she becomes a student at Hexside. The plant glyph also ends up being the last glyph she discovers.
* AdaptationalRelationshipOverhaul:
** Eda takes on a motherly role to Luz earlier than she does in canon. By Chapter 17, Eda essentially adopts Luz and gives her the family name.
** Eda and Raine start dating again in this fic.
* AdaptationalSpeciesChange: [[spoiler:Vee is a human, and one of Luz’s sisters in this fic. Later on, Belos ends up creating a clone of Luz named after Vee]].
* AdaptationalVillainy: Emperor Belos was already a despicable man in canon, but in this fic, [[spoiler:he sexually abuses Lilith and Hunter regularly, and when he first meets Luz, he molests her]].
* AffectionateNickname: After they start dating, Amity will occasionally call Luz “Loola”, which means “love” in Luz’s language.
* AmazonChaser: One of Luz’s qualities Amity is attracted to is her incredible strength.
* AscendedExtra: Raine and Lilith become more prominent characters who eventually start living in the Owl House.
* BizarreAlienBiology: Apparently, witches have lighter bone density than humans do, although from Eda’s perspective, Luz’s thicker bone density is this trope.
* BringMyBrownPants: Luz wets herself at the sight of the Slitherbeast. Thankfully, [[CrazyPrepared Eda carries an extra pair of underwear in her hair]].
* ConditionedToAcceptHorror: Hunter is under the assumption that Belos loves him dearly, [[spoiler:even when his uncle sexually assaults him]].
* DeathByAdaptation:
** [[spoiler:Lilith’s Palismen is killed by Belos]]
** [[spoiler:One of Luz’s memories reveals that her twin sister Vee was killed by an enemy tribe]].
* EmpoweredBadassNormal: Luz was already tough enough to beat Boscha in a witches duel without using any magic, but then she starts to discover the glyphs.
* EnemyMine: [[spoiler:This is how Eda unlocks her harpy form, by reaching a truce with the Owl Beast after she and Luz are captured]].
* ExactWords: When Luz challenges Boscha to a witches duel after the latter finds out she’s a human, she says that if she wins, Boscha will “keep her mouth shut”. When Boscha loses the duel and tries to go back on her word by telling everyone that Luz is really a human, the everlasting oath physically prevents her from saying anything along the lines of that.
* FirstPeriodPanic: Luz experiences her first “[[CallARabbitASmeerp moontime]]” in Chapter 15.
* ForWantOfANail:
** Rather than being forced to take her there, Eda decides to take Luz to the Covention for her first outing in the Boiling Isles, mainly to teach her about some of her world’s culture. When Willow and Gus find out, they have Eda send Amity and Willow into Luz’s mind. Amity and Willow try their best to fix her memories, but after being traumatized by some of the darker ones, they beg Inner Luz to finish fixing Luz’s mind for them]].

** [[spoiler:Vee is still a clone created by Belos, but she's a human instead of a basilisk. Not long afterward, Darius essentially kidnaps both her and Hunter to get them away from Belos]].
* GilliganCut: Chapters 22 and 23 feature one after Luz makes an everlasting oath with Boscha.
-->'''Luz:''' ''(At the end of Chapter 22)'' That’s probably fine.
-->'''Eda:''' ''(At the start of Chapter 23)'' This is most certainly not fine!
* InterruptedIntimacy: The first lovemaking session between Eda and Raine since they got back together is interrupted by Luz coming to tell them that she brought Mr. Anderson back to the Owl House as a prisoner.
* ItIsDehumanizing: Several characters initially refer to Luz as “It”, only to be corrected by Eda.
-->'''Bump:''' It’s none of my business as to how you obtained it, but--
-->'''Eda:''' Her.
-->'''Bump:''' Excuse me?
-->'''Eda:''' Luz is not an animal. She’s a person, and has all the mental prowess of any witch. Please, she’s already experienced enough speciesism as it is. I promise you, she’s more capable than you think.
* LiteralMinded: Luz can be like this at times thanks to not being familiar with phrasing.
-->'''Luz:''' Edaaaaaaa. Luz wants to explore!
-->'''Eda:''' Luz, ask me one more time and I’m sending you to your room.
-->'''Luz:''' If you send Luz to her room, can you come too so Luz can ask you there?
* LoopholeAbuse: [[spoiler:Because the portal door only works when a Clawthorne is using it, Belos uses his authority to legally make Luz Eda’s daughter instead of letting Eda go.]]
* MamaBear: Eda is this for Luz.
* TheMole: Mr. Anderson is one for the Emperor’s Coven.
* OurGodsAreDifferent: Luz believes in the existence of several human gods, like Ubris, Chief of Gods, Aza, God of Dreams, Phemera, God of Game, and Cymris, Goddess of Rain. She also views the things that have happened to her as being connected to the gods, like how Eda was a gift to Luz from Ubris.
* PoliticallyIncorrectVillain: [[spoiler:During his first interaction with Luz, Belos molests her while criticizing her body. When Luz struggles to answer one of his questions, Belos asks if she’s “retarded” for not answering fast enough]].
* RacistGrandma: Eda mentions that at the last family reunion she went to, her grandma wouldn’t stop talking about the “good old days” [[UsefulNotes/CivilRightsMovement when demons had to ride in the back of airships]].
* RapeIsASpecialKindOfEvil: [[spoiler:Belos was shown to sexually abuse Lilith multiple times while she was under his employ]].
* RightForTheWrongReasons: When Luz discovers the light glyph, she assumes that one of her gods sent her a message. She’s not wrong to believe that ''a'' god helped her discover the light glyph, but she didn’t consider the Titan playing a role in it.
* ScrewThisImOuttaHere: PlayedForDrama. [[spoiler:After a chain of traumatizing experiences trying to repair Luz’s memories, when Amity and Willow see the label of Luz’s memory of being molested by Emperor Belos, they ask if Inner Luz can try to fix it while they leave. Both of them feel incredibly guilty afterwards]].
* SmarterThanYouLook: Luz is a very quick learner, and several characters are surprised by how easy it is for her to understand the culture in the Demon Realm.
* TeethClenchedTeamwork: While Amity and Willow [[spoiler:go into Luz’s mind]], they bicker a little, and Willow learning that [[spoiler:Amity burned one of her memories]] doesn’t help things.
* ThirdPersonPerson: This is how Luz talks normally. While Luz is capable of using proper pronouns, she typically sounds very stilted when doing so.
* TragicStillbirth: [[spoiler:Eda attempted to have a baby with Raine in the past, but because of her curse, her body rejected the fetus. A flashback heavily implies that this was what caused her and Raine to break up before they reunited]].
* UnwantedFalseFaith: Luz initially believes that Eda is a god when they first meet, mostly due to the fact that in her culture, drawing is usually something the gods must give someone permission to do.
* WhamLine: During an argument between the Clawthorne sisters at a family reunion, Lilith accidentally blurts out something Luz wasn’t aware of.
-->'''Lilith:''' Well, newsflash, Eda: That human can never replace anything! And certainly not [[spoiler:the child you’ve buried 6 feet under]]!
* WhyDidItHaveToBeSnakes: As a result of her previous encounter with them, Luz has a fear of hyenas. Of course, the problem is when she first goes to Hexside, one of her teachers resembles a hyena.
