* DyingDeclarationOfHate: When Sphantis is created, Darkea and Walker, thinking they're about to die, admit they hate each other.

** Patrick/Darkea: In Indigo Nightmare, it's suggested that Patrick might harbour feelings for Darkea, or is at least regretful that she never had a chance to be anything more than what her father wanted. One could take that to mean their banter back in forth in combat is actually flirting.

* RecruitTeenagersWithAttitude: It's never explicitly stated how old the Rangers are, but seeing as how they're first and second year college students, one can assume they're anywhere in the range of 18 to 20.

* {{Mooks}}: The Blots, Heartless-like humanoid blobs of darkness. They eventually become more and more pathetic as time goes by.

*** ALoadOfBull: Dirk's Behemoth Zord, which is basically a badass mad bull from Hell.

* InfinityPlusOneSword: [[spoiler:Drayden's Dragon Buster. When he was possessed by Dargoon, he was able to take out giants with this weapon, and he still has yet to truly meet his match while wielding this weapon.]]

* TwoGirlsToATeam: Inverted and GenderFlipped. [[spoiler: Unless you count Jowar and Drayden joining the team later on.]]
* WizardBeard: Jowar is always seen stroking his when he's deep in thought.
* WizardClassic: Jowar.

* [[INeverToldYouMyName I Never Told You Her Name]]: When the Doppelganger Lightless assumes the form of Dirk's sister, 'she' accidently says Nikki's name while referencing Dirk's friends, even though she should have no idea who Nikki is, thus giving 'herself' away.

* {{Shapeshifting}}: The Doppelganger Lightless, which can change its shape and size, and can peer into the minds of its opponent to pick the perfect form to take, just to screw with them.

* StrongAnts: The Ant Lightless, which could toss the Gaia Megazord around like a toy.
--> The writer DOES acknowledge in the Author's Notes for that chapter that "'''the reason ants can lift several times their own weight actually has more to do with the Square/Cube Law that allows them this feat BECAUSE they're so small. However, for the purposes of this story, the dark energy the Ant Lightless was filled with allowed it to bypass this law, effectively granting it such strength despite its size. The reason for keeping it an Ant Lightless is for the symbolism behind it. Also, this is Power Rangers, where spandex can apparently prevent someone from being sliced in half, instead sending sparks off the person's body. Logic got tossed out the window with the first episode.'''"

* FireIsRed: Red Ranger, Nikki, is the Guardian of Fire.

* RookieRedRanger: While the whole team are new to superheroing, Nikki is new to the group while the others are already well acquainted, yet she becomes the leader when they become Rangers.

* UnflinchingWalk: Patrick slices the Skeleton Lightless in half and turns his back to him, sheathing his sword as his opponent explodes behind him.
* WaterIsBlue: Blue Ranger, Layla, is the Guardian of Water.

* WindIsGreen: Green Ranger, Patrick, is the Guardian of Wind.

* {{Badass}}: Patrick. He slayed a Giant Blot (with help), regularly pairs off with Darkea in fights, is Nikki's sparring partner, was the first to achieve Powered-Up Mode, was the first to break out of the illusion of the Well of Regret, and is now a [[spoiler: BlindWeaponmaster]]. You can almost hear 'Go Green Ranger Go' when you're reading these scenes.
* BerserkButton: You never, ever, EVER want to use Dirk's family as a way to mess with him. Also, despite bickering between the two, during a battle where Patrick almost dies, Madilyn becomes TheBerserker until Patrick makes it back.
* [[BigBrotherInstinct Big Sister Instinct]]: Madilyn. Pretty much taken to unnecessary levels at almost every turn. However, this is made all the more sympathetic when you learn that [[spoiler: Madilyn's real sister was killed in a fire, and Layla, who resembled her so much, is all she has of her.]]

* FakeMemories: [[spoiler: Layla's memories, and her blood relation to Madilyn, turned out to be fake, following an accident with magical flames that mixed her memories up with Madilyn's real sister's, who died horribly in a fire, along with Madilyn's parents. The writer guessed that, after this reveal, every reader would gang up and murder him.]]
* HandicappedBadass: [[spoiler: Patrick. Doesn't miss a beat in being a badass even after losing his sight.]]

* RedHeadedHero: Patrick.

* VitriolicBestBuds: Patrick and Madilyn. Also, to a lesser degree, Nikki and Madilyn.

What makes it all the worse is that Walker has known this for years and still wants to kill him. DAMN.]]
