* {{Foreshadowing}}: Even while carrying a passenger, Crobat is too fast and manuverable to be hit by the average Marine or pirate. So both Crobat and Usopp are surprised when a bullet manages to tear through one of Crobat's wings. [[spoiler:This is later revealed to be the work of [=CP0=], the most elite intelligence organization of the World Government, who were tasked with collecting DNA samples of Lucas's Pokémon for Vegapunk to use as part of the Seraphim project.]]

* TheAllegedBoss:
** Literally nobody in Cipher Pol Nine cares about Spandam on a personal level. Blueno even notices at one point when he's in danger that the only reason he's bothering to save him is because he's (nominally) in charge, and because it would be far too much of a hassle to find a replacement.
** Lucas is later named [[spoiler:the boss of the Straw Hat Pirates]] in order to give them some PlausibleDeniability to their actions [[spoiler:via Lucas's status as a Warlord of the Sea]]. But it's clear to everyone that Lucas has no real intention of ordering them around and that this is purely a political move. Lucas also explains that while he's allied with them, he won't be fighting their battles for them, which is exactly how his "subordinates" want it to be.

* FireForgedFriends: Smoker grows to trust Lucas after fighting Baroque Works together in Nanohana and Alabasta. Despite the disastrous events of G-4, Lucas sees Smoker and Tashigi the same way and goes out of his way to help them when he can. Smoker is even willing to stand up to Onigumo, his superior, when when threatened with a court martial for getting in the way of Onigumo's attacks against Lucas.

* AlwaysABiggerFish: After eating the Dark-Dark Fruit, Blackbeard is absolutely confident in his ability to defeat Ace [[spoiler:even with Sabo joining Ace's side.]] But Blackbeard's actions wind up provoking [[spoiler:Giratina, who defeats Blackbeard in one headbutt for interrupting its battle with Lucas.]]

* BadassTeam: Lucas's Pokémon have each been trained to be ranked among the strongest examples of their species. Individually, they're each capable of engaging a Vice-Admiral in single combat and have a solid chance of winning. But when they're fighting together, they can take on foes as powerful as the Admirals, with some speculating they can battle one of the Four Emperors and potentially come out on top.

* SupremeChef: Lucas silently apologizes to his mother after taking a bite of Sanji's cooking, as it's the best food he's ever had. Sanji's expertise even goes so far as to be able to judge his customer's taste in water solely by their history, appearance, and mannerisms, offering [[spoiler:Zephyr's]] favorite wine without even asking for his customer's preferences.

* SenselessSacrifice: Discussed. When Baroque Works lays a bomb underneath the Alabasta royal palace, Pell gets ready to fly away with the bomb and sacrifice himself for the sake of the city. Gardevoir interrupts him and chastises him for not considering asking her for help. As s member of species known for being willing to sacrifice themselves for their trainers, Gardevoir abhors the idea of unnecessary self-sacrifice. She then proceeds to effortlessly teleport the bomb miles above the city, allowing it to explode far away enough that not a single stone shifts in Alabasta.

* ActionGirl: Vice-Admiral Gion is one of the Marines's senior Vice-Admirals and the head of G-4. She's able to clash evenly with Lucario and even injure him in the process. When Rhode makes an enemy of Lucas, Gion is able to deflect six Hyper Beams at once with a single attack, albeit one that took enormous effort from her.

** Lucas is later named [[spoiler:the boss of the Straw Hat Pirates]] in order to give them some PlausibleDeniability to their actions [[spoiler:via Lucas's status as a Warlord of the Sea]]. But it's clear to everyone that Lucas has no real intention of ordering them around and that this is purely a political move. [[spoiler:Not to mention Luffy's plans on being King of the Pirates and his crew's loyalty to him.]] Lucas also explains that while he's allied with them, he won't be fighting their battles for them, which is exactly how his "subordinates" want it to be.

** As it turns out, the [[spoiler:Pluton blueprints Spandam]] obtained are fake, according to [[spoiler:Franky, who made a fake set once he heard that Crocodile was after Pluton]].

* BarrierWarrior: Among Gardevoir's many psychc powers is her ability to produce barriers to shut out incoming attacks. They're strong enough to take hits from Vice Admirals and even [[spoiler:Admiral Aokiji]] without breaking.

** Crocodile calling Gardevoir a "concubine" prompts her to warp into his face and launch a point-blank attack.

* NonActionGuy: Being a Pokémon Trainer, Lucas acts as a FrontlineGeneral for his team. But he's also from a world where he never needed to learn self-defense, since most fights spring up between trainers' Pokémon rather than between people. This means he's the weak point in any engagement between his team and any bad guys who have no qualms with hurting him. He tries to subvert this by taking up Fishman Karate, but a few weeks' worth of lessons isn't enough to get him in fighting shape against the average pirate sailing the Grand Line.

* ShaggyDogStory: [[spoiler:Crocodile]] has spent years trying to find [[spoiler:Pluton]], and finally learns in Chapter 17 after blackmailing [[spoiler:Robin]] into telling him where it really is that it's in [[spoiler:Wano, the home base of Kaido, one of the Four Emperors]]. Which is to say, [[TheKeyIsBehindTheLock it's locked behind one of the obstacles he was going to use it to surpass]].

* CrazyPrepared: Lucas mentions how glad he is to be a pack Rattata when thinking about his extensive supplies for what was ostensibly a simple recon mission that turned into a one-way jaunt to another world.

* BecauseYouWereNiceToMe: Discussed; Lucas relates some wisdom he got from his father to [[spoiler:Sengoku]] about how all Pokémon want the same thing from their human trainers and partners. Even Legendary Pokémon would feel this way about humans they've bonded with. Unbeknowst to Lucas, [[spoiler:his father, [[VideoGame/PokemonLegendsArceus Rei]], has personal experience with how even Legendaries like Giratina, captured by a chosen one and given the chance to experience the unmirrored world for the first time, will dedicate itself to protecting the world at his behest, all the way to the present day. Rei's and Giratina's past friendship is what convinces Giratina to offer to bring Lucas home in exchange for being a WorthyOpponent]].

* DifficultButAwesome: Trick Room is a move described as being tremendously taxing to maintain. But its ability to reverse the effective speeds of everyone inside opens a wide variety of tactical applications, turning a MightyGlacier like Torterra into a LightningBruiser. It can even briefly restrain the likes of [[spoiler:Giratina]].

** During Lucas's battle with [[spoiler:Giratina]], he screams that he came for a fight and asks [[IAmNotLeftHanded why his opponent is holding back.]] His opponent agrees and [[spoiler:enters Griseous Form bring its full power to bear against Lucas's team.]]

* DeadpanSnarker: Lucas' inner narration is much snarkier than what he typically says to others. Gardevoir is even more prone to snark when chewing others out and is the member of Lucas's team most willing to tease him for fun.

* TokenFlyer: While Gardevoir can levitate others with enough concentration, Crobat is the only one of Lucas's Pokémon who is able to fly. This makes Crobat invaluable for transportation and communication when teleporting is unfeasible. Lucas winds up relying on Crobat extensively throughout the conflicts at Water 7 and Enies Lobby to get around, which he lampshades by mentioning that he'll need to pamper Crobat after this for all of his hard work.

* ExperiencedProtagonist: Newly minted Sinnoh Champion Lucas and his team have battled with and trained with the Elite Four and other Champions, survived Legendary rampages, and has pretty much SeenItAll after the Galactic Incident. While Lucas decides to TakeALevelInBadass so that he can fight on his own, his team of Gardevoir, Houndoom, Torterra, Vaporeon, Lucario, and Crobat are all each capable of fighting Vice-Admiral Gion, who was canonically under consideration to be a full Admiral during the timeskip, to a one-on-one draw.

** Blackbeard attempts to capture the likes of [[spoiler:Giratina]] for himself. His opponent responds by ramming him so hard that Blackbeard is knocked unconscious, thrown through the Bridge of Hesitation, and lands on the deck a Marine vessel.

* IntelligibleUnintelligible: While all Pokémon possess human-level intellect and can understand human language perfectly. But it's difficult for them to learn how to speak the language. It's much easier for a Pokémon Trainer to simply pick up on their team's quirks and body language to understand what their Pokémon is trying to tell them, but that takes years of relationship-building to reach that level of instinctive understanding.

* DontYouDarePityMe: When Luffy tells Lucci that he knows he can beat him with the training he's done and Zoro tells Kaku [[JustToyingWithThem he's purposefully drawing out this sword fight for as long as possible]], neither of the assassins take being looked down upon well.

* BreakOutTheMuseumPiece: One of Lucas' tools is a harness he can use to tie himself to Crobat to use him for transportation. It's mentioned that its design dates back to when the Sinnoh region was still called the Hisui region and ruled by the Diamond and Pearl clans. Despite being antiquated by modern standards, it's secure and effective enough to allow Crobat to quickly and safely transport Lucas through the air. Unfortunately, it's destroyed by bullet fire while Crobat is transporting Usopp to harry the Marines stationed at the Tower of Justice.

* CallingMeALogarithm: Dazed from being slammed facefirst into the Going Merry, Lucas mistakes Chopper for a "cute baby Stantler" before passing out from his injuries. Chopper isn't sure whether to be happy that to be called cute, angry that he was called a baby, or worried that Lucas called him a nonsense word because of a concussion.

** When asked about his world, Lucas alludes to the existence of Legendary Pokémon. In Sinnoh alone, he mentions Arceus, the TopGod of the setting, Dialga and Palkia, who have dominion over space and time, and Giratina, Lord of the Distortion World with the power to cross between dimensions. He explains that they're the closest his world has to "gods" and a "devil" to a pensive [[spoiler:Sengoku]]. Lucas even [[OhMyGods swears on their names]], emphasizing how they're revered and feared as divine entities in the Sinnoh region.

* BenevolentConspiracy: After learning of Lucas's disappearance, the Pokéon League scrambles to keep his absence under wraps to prevent panic and confusion. Cynthia, the incumbent Champion, resumes her duties in the meantime while instructing the League to only reveal the news to the Elite Four, the Gym Leaders, and Lucas's closest friends and family.

* FishOutOfWater: Due to being dropped into an entirely different world, Lucas has a lot of adjusting to do from the CultureClash of being the only Pokémon Trainer in a world full of superpowered sailors. His Pokémon are both wondrous and frightening to the people of the Grand Line, while Lucas himself becomes wrapped up in political intrigue because of his access to his world's technology and the destructive potential of his team.

* IgnoredExpert: Admiral Aokiji, despite his rank, can't directly give orders to Cipher Pol Nine or Spandam. As a result, when he's telling Spandam to not go after Robin, since doing so risks ruining the Government's attempts to make Lucas a Warlord, he "advises" him that if anyone is found out to be responsible for ruining the Government's attempt to get Lucas and his team back on their side, they will have hell to pay for it. Spandam decides that IveComeTooFar, and [[spoiler:contacts Blackbeard to kidnap Robin indirectly]].

** At first, Fleet Admiral Sengoku wanted to control Lucas to preserve the short-term stability of the World Government. But once Lucas spells out what this new piece on the game board is capable of and willing to do, he realizes that he has a unique opportunity to instead promote Justice in the long term. He then agrees to use Lucas, his team, and his "subordinates" the Straw Hat Pirates to clean out corruption in the ranks of the Government, the Marines and the Warlords.

** Due to Gardevoir being able to [[spoiler:restore Sabo's memories]], Ace doesn't face Blackbeard alone, foiling Blackbeard's goal of capturing Ace as a bargaining chip to be instated as one of the Warlords of the Sea. In addition, Lucas's presence [[spoiler:fills Warlord position that Blackbeard wanted]] and eventually [[spoiler:summons Giratina, who sees Blackbeard as a pest and curb-stomps him, leaving Blackbeard at the mercy of the Marines.]]

* TrappedInAnotherWorld: Lucas is sent into the world of ''One Piece'' due to an encounter with a colony of Unown. And unfortunately, he doesn't (at the moment) know of any way back. In fact, the first side story confirms that Lucas will need help to get back home:

Even after [[spoiler:becoming a Warlord of the Sea]], he retains strong relationships with most of the people he meets on the Grand Line regardless of allegiance. Even Smoker, who despises pirates and criminals with a passion, considers himself and Lucas FireForgedFriends.

But watching fighters like Sabo [[CharlesAtlasSuperpower crush boulders and cause Magnitude-like effects with their bare hands thanks to their physical training]] quickly revises Lucas's opinion of himself. After meeting up with the Revolutionaries, Lucas starts training himself to defend himself a little better.

The plot starts when the Unown at Solaceon Ruins rifle through his memories and realize that he still wishes to explore and grow with his Pokemon, leading them to drop him in an entirely new world where he'd be free of his duties.

* NervesOfSteel: While Lucas may complain, gripe, and curse in the middle of a fight, he very rarely loses his cool completely. He keeps his head on straight even while BoundAndGagged by Luffy and catapulted toward the Going Merry. So everyone takes notice the few times that Lucas and his team are truly terrified, such as when he's [[spoiler:suffering the effects of Sengoku's Conquerer's Haki]] or when [[spoiler:Giratina appears over Enies Lobby]].

* NormalFishInATinyPond: Prior to coming to the Grand Line, Lucas was under the impression that he was reasonably fit and in good shape for someone his age. * YoungerThanTheyLook: It's difficult for pirates and Marines to gauge the age of Lucas's Pokemon given that their life cycles are entirely different from anything found on the Grand Line. Lucario, one of Lucas's primary frontline fighters, explains that he's a few months away from being four years old, surprising the Straw Hats and the Revolutionaries who are impressed by Lucario's fighting ability.

In addition to working his body to try to approach the ''One Piece'' standard, Lucas learns some water-throwing Fishman Jujutsu techniques from Hack, mostly used with a [[ElementalShapeshifter water-melted]] [[EquippableAlly Vaporeon]]. But the alternative is being hunted down by the Marines for defying a World Noble.
