* HoldingBackThePhlebotinum: Aside from the Northern Alliance, no one in Europa knows that the Vikings have tamed dragons. Hiccup intends to keep this a secret for as long as he can and has ordered his troops to refrain from using them outside of Viking territory.
** Snotlout is unable to use any dragons during his attack on Radvo for this very reason.

** Hiccup’s Mathantiran campaign in general. All of the major castles are taken in a matter of days and it’s estimated that the UNK will full control of Mathantir in only a few months.

* AwesomeButImpractical: The Siegebreakers, to the point that they border on CoolButInefficient. Siegebreakers are basically cannons using Zippleback gas as a gunpowder substitute. They were designed to be used for when dragons weren’t available and they are a game changer in a world where gunpowder was never discovered. Unfortunately, they suffer from several major drawbacks. Firstly, they are incredibly expensive to produce. The amount of metal used to create just six alone is equivalent to that of several hundred axes, swords, and shields. Secondly, they are extremely heavy. It’s difficult to move them and a total of eight dragons were needed to move both the cannons and their ammunition. This also gets acknowledged in-universe, with many characters pointing out that with eight dragons, one might as well not have the cannons at all.

** The Vikings' occupation of the city of Radvo. Snotlout and his army sail into Radvo's ports and easily conquer the city in less than a day. This is somewhat justified, since Radvo is a small city consisting of mostly traders and merchants who weren't expecting an attack.
** Hiccup’s Mathantiran campaign in general. Most castles are taken in a matter of days and it’s estimated that the UNK will have taken all of Mathantir in a few months.

* AwesomeButImpractical: A few of Hiccup’s inventions fall under this.
** His fountain pen is fragile and leaks frequently since the ink containers are made of glass.

* WhatMeasureIsAMook: In Chapter 3, the remains of several Northern Alliance ships are found off the coast of Alvsted, with burnt corpses being onboard. Elsa is horrified and is worried about how to tell the dead sailors' families.

* ShownTheirWork: The "Northern Alliance" name used for Drago's army is based on a [[http://nicolasweis.com/blog/2014/06/30/how-to-shoot-your-dragon/ blog post]] written by one of the visual development artists for ''How to Train Your Dragon 2''.

* ChekhovsGun: Early on, the nation of Avalon (England's counterpart) gets mentioned a few times. In Chapter 9, Avalon becomes much more significant for both Arendelle and the UNK. [[spoiler: Elsa gets a letter from the Emrysian Order asking her to AbdicateTheThrone, since their laws forbid magic-users from holding political office. ** Despite defeating Drago, becoming chief of Berk, and having Toothless become the new alpha of the dragons, the Vikings still faced war against the remnants of Drago’s army.
** Also, even though Elsa’s reconciled with Anna and no longer has to fear her powers, she now has to deal with the threat of war.

** Even though Hiccup and Toothless defeated Drago, his army didn't just collapse or surrender.

** At one point during the UNK's campaign in Mathantir, it's mentioned that Camicazi had made a failed attempt to capture Viggo. Since Camicazi has never met Viggo, she has no idea what he looks like, allowing Viggo to easily escape.

* OvernightConquest: Snotlout and his army takes over the city of Radvo in one day.

*** Viggo Grimborn, the main antagonist of the ''Race to the Edge'' TV series, is revealed to be one of the Northern Alliance's leaders.

* OffscreenMomentOfAwesome: The end of Chapter 9 shows Hiccup's army beginning the siege of Castle MacIntosh. The next chapter shows the aftermath of the battle, with Vikings cleaning up Castle MacIntosh of the enemy's remains.

* EnemyMine: The main reason the Vikings were able to unite was due to their shared hatred of the Northern Alliance.

Taking place after the events of ''WesternAnimation/HowToTrainYourDragon2'' and ''Frozen'', the fanfic deals with the aftermath of Drago's attack on Berk. This was followed by Drago's army launching an entire invasion of the Barbaric Archipelago, eventually causing the Viking tribes there to unite into a kingdom with Hiccup as their king. The new United Norse Kingdom eventually manages to drive the Northern Alliance out of the Archipelago and goes on the offensive.

Meanwhile, Arendelle has received some startling news: the Vikings have returned. Fearful for Anna's safety, Elsa tries to prepare for war with an enemy that hasn't been seen for hundreds of years.

*** Although Arendelle is more advanced than the Vikings, they are still at a disadvantage due to their soldiers possessing little-to-no experience on the battlefield and their navy being made up of small boats.

** [[spoiler: Even though the United Norse Kingdom forced the Northern Alliance out of Mathantir, Alvin mentions that the Vikings on Mathantir still distrusts the UNK. From their point of view, the UNK seems to have only replaced the Northern Alliance as the invaders. It also doesn't help that the UNK uses an army of dragons (a.k.a. the creatures they spent generations warring against).]]

** [[spoiler: During the UNK's campaign in Mathantir, Camicazi discovers the location of Viggo's war camp and attacks. However, since Camicazi has never met Viggo, she has no idea what he looks like and Viggo is able to easily escape amidst the chaos of the battle.]]

** One difference has the Vikings be descendants of the Scottish clans from ''WesternAnimation/{{Brave}}'', which explains their Scottish accents. Furthermore, the Vikings never actually died out. Rather, they fled to the Barbaric Archipelago.

* SparedByTheAdaptation: [[spoiler: Viggo Grimborn (from ''Race to the Edge'') is still alive and allied with Drago after the events of the TV series. He's currently the Northern Alliance general that Hiccup is most focused on defeating.]]
