I actually talked with the author about this, and he said that while it was meant to be a joke, the landlords acting understatedly frosty towards Lincoln after his rampage in Imp City did make sense. I looked up the trops on its main page, and I didn't see anything about "character reactions allowed." Unless I misinterpreted it. Yes, imps don't exist in real life, but neither do unicorns, Pegasus, anthropomorphic turtles that are mutated into ninja, wizards, talking vehicles, and the like. "Doesn't exist = unrealistic" kind of undermines the "surprisingly realistic" aspect.
