They reveal that they plan on using the Gate to summon an army of dragons to kill Mundus, the Three Demon Kings and Acnologia in one fell swoop, establishing Vergil as the new ruler of the Underworld, and averting Rogue's future of Mundus ruling over Earthland.]]

Here, it's because [[spoiler:his research indicated that ''Mundus'' was the source of magic, which led to him confronting the demon king on Mallet Island. After the [[CurbStompBattle 'fight']], Mundus exposed the wizard to his demonic energy, [[BrainwashedAndCrazy corrupting him]], and instructing him to assemble a guild of dark wizards to find Zeref]].

* AdaptationExpansion: The Devil Hand arc takes place between the canonical Edolas and Tenrou Island arcs.

* AnArmAndALeg:
** Dante cuts off one of Nelo Angelo's arms during their fight. [[spoiler:After receiving power from Mundus, [[OneWingedAngel he gets better]].]]
** He does this again during the fight with [[spoiler:Hades, in order to prevent him from using [[UnholyNuke Grimoire Law]]]].
* AndThenWhat: In ''Lets Release Chaos'', Vergil gives his usual MightMakesRight speech, stating his plans to rule both the human and demon worlds, while dismissing Fairy Tail's belief in [[ThePowerOfFriendship the power of friends and family]]. In response, Natsu asks what he's even going to ''do'' once he's obtained the power he seeks, noting that [[OrcusOnHisThrone sitting on a throne all the time]] would be pretty boring.

* ArsonMurderAndJaywalking: Lady's Edolas counterpart wears a dress, detests violence, and has ''two'' green eyes instead of heterochromia.
** During his first encounter with Jester, an annoyed Natsu asks him who he is, what he knows about Devil Hand, and why he's dressed like that.

* {{Bizarrchitecture}}: King Faust's castle has cells in the upper levels, an incredible complex courtyard layout, and contains ''an in-doors amusement park''. Dante even comments that it's weirder than the Demon World.

* BottomlessMagazines: Played straight for the most part with Dante, Lady, and Trish.
** {{Subverted|Trope}} in the final battle of Edolas when a day of nonstop fighting means Lady no longer has ammo left in her rocket launcher and a very limited amount in her pistols, having to resort to hand-to-hand more often.

* CurbStompCushion: While the fight between Mirajane and Lisanna is almost completely in the favor of the former, [[spoiler:once the younger Strauss sibling unlocks '''Take Over: Dragon Soul''' she starts to actually clash fairly evenly with her [[TheAce S-Class]] sister, even matching her [[CastingAShadow darkness magic]] with [[PlayingWithFire flame magic]]. By the end of it, Lisanna is clearly in worse shape, but she managed to visibly bruise and greatly impress her older sister.]]

There's a more realistic amount of blood from wounds, enemies are more dangerous and vicious, with some employing [[BreakThemByTalking psychological tactics]] on the protagonists and while there is still comedy, very few opponents are PlayedForLaughs.

* DeathByAdaptation: [[spoiler:Rather than facing exile, King Faust is killed by Dante during their fight]].

** Nelo Angelo functions as this to the people of Edolas, [[AlwaysSomeoneBetter even more so than Erza Knightwalker]], having [[OneManArmy single-handedly ended several guilds]] and even [[HeroKiller killed Edolas Fairy Tail's old guild master]]. Helps that as a demon, he is the only being there with innate power with the exception of the [[{{Flight}} Exceeds]], and proved capable of matching ''[[TheAce Dante]]'' even with his full powers.

* GeniusBruiser: Modeus is a MasterSwordsman that was trained by [[WorldsBestWarrior Sparda]] himself and has all the power and skill that entails. He is also very knowledgeable about a wide variety of topics, frequently serving as MrExposition to Fairy Tail, and proves capable of identifying the scope of an enemy's abilities from a brief description.

** Asmodeua, the Seven Sins sin of Lust, who is a sadistic psychopath that revels in inflicting physical and [[MindRape mental]] torture on her victims, having been an unholy mix of SerialKiller ''and'' [[RapeIsASpecialKindOfEvil serial rapist]] before joining Devil Hand. Unlike some of the other Sins who get some sympathy from Fairy Tail (Leviatha/Sheeree and Beelzebub/Adrian because of their [[TragicVillain tragic pasts]], Iblis and Belphegor from [[spoiler:[[AlasPoorVillain their deaths]]]]) ''she'' is so vile and monstrous that [[spoiler:her demise at the hands of [[LightEmUp Loke]], [[WereDragon Lisanna]], and [[StarPower Lucy]] is treated as disposing of a demon]].

* LikeBrotherAndSister: Trish and Dante are very close, having known each other well before they joined Fairy Tail, and are willing to give each other plenty of emotional support. However, both agree that they are JustFriends, and come across as siblings more than anything.

*** Evergreen plays this to the hilt, wielding a form of magic she outright calls "Fairy Magic" that lets her manifest wings, and many of her attack names are based on various fairy myths.

** Devil Hand as a whole have demonic motifs, with the majority of their ranks being comprised of demons. Even their [[TokenHuman human members]], [[QuirkyMinibossSquad the Seven Deadly Sins]] get in on this, being named after several demons or fallen angels.

** Grimoire Heart is strongly associated with demons and devils given they outright worship Mundus, the emperor of the Underworld. Most strongly seen with their leader Hades, whose armour has plenty of spikes and a horned helmet, on top of enhancing his might with his Devils Eye and Devils Heart, which allow him to channel vast amounts of demonic power.

** Blue Pegasus: The Pegasus, a beautiful flying horse that is much more powerful than its appearance would suggest, [[AgentPeacock in line with their members formidable skill despite their flamboyance]]. They even have a CoolAirship to let them fly around the country.

** Vergils insult to Natsu about his flames being "unable to roast a marshmallow" is a nod to his victory quote to Ghost Rider in ''VideoGame/UltimateMarvelVsCapcom3''.
** During their battle atop Temen ni gru, Dante lands a horizontal slice to Vergil while moving past him, which is how he won their climactic duel in the end of ''VideoGame/DevilMayCry3''. Since both combatants are using their [[SuperMode Devil Trigger]] this time, the fight continues.

** As a result of being caught between a blast from Natsu and Modeus [[in his [[SuperMode Devil Trigger]]], [[spoiler:Nelo Angelo's]] body is vaporized.
** [[Asmodeua]] is reduced to less than ash after receiving a triple whammy from Loke, Lisanna [[spoiler:in her Dragon Soul Take Over]], and Lucy's [[spoiler:Angel assisted]] Urano Metoria.

** Azuma from Grimoire Heart's Eight Kin of Purgatory simply seek [[BloodKnight strong opponents]], and is willing to do whatever he can to motivate them. This includes keeping any promises he made prior to the fight, restoring the Tenrou Tree (and with it Fairy Tail's magic) [[spoiler:after his defeat at Dante and Erza's hands]].

** The InUniverse reaction in Edolas to Fairy Tail forcing [[TheDreaded Nelo Angelo]] to ''retreat'', when most encounters with him boil down to RunOrDie.
* OOCIsSeriousBusiness:
** On the anniversary of Lisanna's death, [[HotBlooded Natsu]] is uncharacteristically somber and subdued, coldly scolding Grey for drawing on his face in his sleep, and refusing to get into a fight with the latter. What's more, he never raises his voice the whole time.
** After Lucy asks Happy for some time alone with Natsu, the blue Exceed is worried when she ''doesn't'' react with comical anger over his usual 'you liiike him'.
** Any mention of Vergil is enough to make Natsu deadly serious after their first encounter, with the eldest son of Sparda being the first person he is actually afraid of fighting, especially given the scar Vergil left on his chest. It takes a talk with Gildarts during the Tenrou Island arc to assure him that it's all right to be afraid of such an opponent.

* TheOnlyOneAllowedToDefeatYou: Part of the reason Ultear [[spoiler:discreetly helps Gray and Juvia defeat Mammon]] is because she considers her grudge with Gray to be a higher priority than his current opponent.

* PerpetualPoverty: [[AvertedTrope Averted]]. Being a member of Fairy Tail gives Dante a steady supply of jobs suited to his skill set, and he quickly manages to work off his debt.

* PretenderDiss: Modeus derides Nelo Angelos boast of being made of Sparda's essence in their final clash, noting that even with that he still [[EvilCannotComprehendGood doesn't understand the true source of his teacher's strength]].

* RunningGag: As is usual with ''Fairy Tail'', there's Lucy having to deal with her teammates breaking into her apartment, Elfman's 'real man' talk, Natsu's motion sickness, and Gray's stripping habit.

** Trish says that while she initially had feelings for Dante, she let go after realizing 1)he has his eyes on Lady, and 2)[[{{Squick}} she looks just like his mother]].

** The Dante/Lady ship also gets a couple of moments, though nothing's official yet and the latter repeatedly denies it.

** Fairy Tail is unable to simply wait out the battle between [[spoiler:Faust and Nelo Angelo]] as the force of their attacks mean that they or innocent civilians could be caught in the crossfire.

** The inciting incident of [=FoD=] is similar to [=FmC=]'s. Sonic is forced to leave his old world behind after performing a HeroicSacrifice to defeat Darkness the Hedgehog, and his attack sends both of them to said world. Dante pretty much experiences something identical to ''Devil May Cry 3'', which is of course a prequel and sets up the environment he is thrust in.

* TemptingFate: At the start of the Edolas arc, Lucy complains that nothing interesting is happening. [[GenreSavvy Lady]] [[LampshadeHanging lampshades]] it.

* UnstoppableForceMeetsImmovableObject: Knightwalker's [[InfinityPlusOneSword Ravelt spear]] against Erza's Armadura Fairy Armour results in both breaking.

** Dante himself calls Carla out for failing to inform them all about the Anima, and withholding further information without explaining why.
** Edolas Lucy, Eva and Mary call out their guild mates for trying to sit out of the final battle out of cowardice.

* AchievementsInIgnorance: Apparently, Kyrie learned her [[spoiler:Arc of Seraph]] magic just from reading books in Fortuna's library, and wasn't aware of it's true potential until after the Order of the Sword Arc.

** Amongst the Neo Oracion Seis, [[spoiler:half the members gain a [[SuperMode Caduto form]] as a result of undergoing the Ascension Ceremony. Klodoa in particular goes from controlling an inanimate body to possessing Gilvers, and proves capable of matching ''[[TheAce Dante]]'' in combat!]]
* AdaptationalContextChange: The Fairy Tail/Crime Sorciere rescue team end up separated when they encounter the Wolf Knights like in canon. However, while the canon split was caused by a shockwave from Natsu’s attack, here they’re separated by Uosuke’s magic, with the Knights implementing DivideAndConquer tactics.

* AdaptationalExpansion: There are ''five'' Hellgates instead of the three in canon, the extra two being guarded by [[VideoGame/{{Darksiders}} by the Stygian Worm and Krakken]].

** Bacchus reveals for his end of the bet with Elfman, to have his sisters 'keep him company for the night', he just meant they join him for a few drinks and nothing more. The only reason he phrased it like that was to rile up his opponent in hopes of getting a better fight, something he apologises for.

** Bacchus apologises to Fairy Tail for his bet with Elfman involving Mirajane and Lisanna, something his canon counterpart never did. He also clarifies his request to have them keep him company throughout the night meant ''exactly'' that, hanging out with him for a few drinks and nothing nefarious, only phrasing it that way to rile up Elfman for a better fight.

* AdaptationExpansion: Dante mentions that Nell Goldstein took him in after he lost his family, and was the one who taught him how to fight, both with forearms and melee weapons. She also left him a sum of money in her will, which is what he used to set up his shop.
* AdaptedOut: While Jellal still disguises himself as Mystogan to infiltrate Fiore and investigate, he does ''not'' join Fairy Tail team B, and by extension, does not have his canon fight with Jura. [[InUniverse The reasoning]] being that openly fighting in the competition will draw too many eyes and risk having him discovered. Out of universe it was the only way the author could add Nero to Team Fairy Tail B without breaking TheStationsOfTheCanon.
* AffectionateGestureToTheHead: Kyrie tends to give Samuel praise and these when she shows off his intellect, which he bashfully appreciates.

** Attempted by Cobra to Modeus, asking if he thinks joining Fairy Tail will [[TheAtoner make up for killing his brother]]. It fails as Modeus has long since come to peace with his actions, resolving to honor Bauls memory by moving forward.

** Kurenai helps Milliana realize how destructive her desire for revenge against Jellal is by revealing she knows she initially joined Mermaid Heel to gain the strength needed to defeat him, and asks if it's as important as the bonds she made in the guild.

** Midnight admits that Dante could have defeated ''half'' the Oracion Seis by himself seven years ago, and even take on himself and Brain at the same time. This turns out to be a prelude to his own boasting though.

* BerserkerTears: The reaction of Samuel, Sugarboy and Dan as [[spoiler:they attack Sanctus after he fatally injures [[BigBrotherMentor Credo]].]]

* BittersweetEnding: At the end of the Order of the Sword Arc, [[spoiler:Fairy Tail and the Order of the Sword manage to defeat the Neo-Oracion Seis, Natsu and Nero kill Sanctus, Gajeel and Gray kill Agnus, and Lucy and Kyrie are able to destroy the Infinity Clock for good, with Zeref destroying Klodoa. In addition, Nero and Kyrie join Fairy Tail, Sparda's body is recovered and given a proper funeral with a cremation, Byro becomes the Order's new head, and Fairy Tail regains some popularity they lost seven years ago. Sadly, many people die, including Credo and Katja, and it's implied that Zeref is planning something very soon that could spell trouble for Fairy Tail in the future.]]

** In contrast to the ruins filled with puzzles and traps the others are held in, one of the pieces of the Infinity Clock is kept underneath a large rock above a gap at the bottom of a lake. As Freed notes, whoever was trying to reach it would have to hold their breath while simultaneously moving the stone against the weight of ''the entire lake''. Fortunately, his [[InstantRunes Jutsu-Shiki]] make sit a simple task for him.
** During the Battle of Fortuna, the Rune Knights mainly cast barrier magic and create shelters for civilians, rather than fight demons directly. This also means there actually ''is'' a safe place for any civilians to stay, and ensures the assorted mages have visible points to defend, making coordination significantly easier.

* TheButlerDidIt: [[spoiler:The butler turns out to be the one responsible for summoning the demons in Chapter 3 in an attempt to summon a greater demon.]]

** ''[[IdiotHero Natsu]]'' of all people points out that the Order of the Sword could have avoided having to fight Fairy Tail for the clock pieces if they had simply ''told them'' they were planning to seal them away. To his credit, Nero recognizes this and ''did'' try to do so, only for [[{{Jerkass}} Mary]] [[SmugSnake Hughes]] to escalate the situation. [[spoiler:And since Sanctus wanted the clock pieces to be assembled and reawakened, they probably would have come into conflict either way.]]

* CriticalStatusBuff: [[spoiler:Essentially Dante's Dreadnaut form, which was unlocked after all the damage he took in his fight with Gilver. Lets him NoSell every attack thrown at him.]]

** The Neo Oracion Seis inflicts this upon both the Fairy Tail and Order of the Sword members in their first encounter, leaving everyone heavily injured while barely breaking a sweat themselves.

* CurbStompCushion: In the final stages of the naval battle, it is clear Minerva more or less has Lucy at her mercy, her magic giving her the obvious advantage in terms of offense and range, and having made sure to [[CombatPragmatist use it to steal her Keys and whips early on]]. Despite this, Lucy manages to hang on for a good chunk of the battle, only needing a few extra seconds to run out the clock for extra points [[spoiler:and even manages to force a tie when Minerva lets her guard down.]]

** [[spoiler:Katja]] is killed by Racer instead of being affected by Anti-Link Magic because the author felt Anti-Link Magic and temporal stasis as a whole was convoluted compared to simple murder getting the point across better.
* DeathEqualsRedemption: [[spoiler:Credo's final actions are to turn against Sanctus in order to stop the madness and save his friends and family. Sadly, he is killed by his former boss for his efforts]].

** In ''Devils and Dragons'', Sting and Rogue use their respective [[SuperMode Drive Modes]] and later Dragon Force as the fight with Fairy Tail ramps up in intensity in the usual Shonen fare of powering up to stronger forms. [[spoiler:However Natsu picks up that they've begun to rely too heavily on the power advantage such forms give them, resorting to them the minute fights get tougher and display little in the way of creativity or tactics [[AttackAttackAttack beyond overwhelming offence]], which Vergil tried to warn them about. As such, they've plateaued regarding their training and are easy for more experienced opponents to read.]]

** Sanctus and Midnight are both gobsmacked when [[spoiler:''Natsu'' manages to enter the Savior, which should only be possible with relatives of Sparda, Anna Heartfilia and Zeref]].

** Discussed in ''The Eclipse Project''. Fairy Tail and their allies note [[spoiler:Dartons attempt to have them ''and'' Madame Kurenai arrested would drawn much more attention from the rest of their respective guilds and likely resulted in the secret he was trying to keep under wraps getting exposed had he succeeded.]]

* DramaticIrony: In ''Fairies, Demons and Angels'', Lucy and Coco complain about Sparda's tendency to be so cryptic with his involvement, even when it could involve world-ending events. A few chapters later, Fairy Tail discovers [[spoiler:that simply reading 'The Key of the Starry Heavens' in reverse triggers a prerecorded message from Sparda warning them of the Infinity Clock and providing plenty of information about how and why it was made, being incredibly forthcoming off all the relevant information. Sadly, by then it was too late.]]

** While everyone else is annoyed when Natsu is ''happy'' at the realization that the Neo Oracion Seis [[spoiler:and Order of the Sword higher ups]] are working together, he points out that means they know where to find both, at the latter's base.

* ForWantOfANail: The Grand Magic Games undergoes some massive changes here:
** First, due to Fairy Tail not going to the Celestial Spirit World, they’re able to do the entire three months of training, making them more skilled than they were in canon. [[InSpiteOfANail Though they do still get the Second Origin from Ultear in order to better catch up with the other guilds.]]
** Instead of five members, the teams in the Games have six members. Dante joins Fairy Tail Team A, Vergil is on Sabertooth, Sho for Lamia Scale, Lucia for Mermaid Heel, and Wally for Quatro Cerberus. In addition, Jenny is with Blue Pegasus from the start, so her commentator role on the first day is given to Bruni. Raven Tail has an original character, Sapphire Caldwell. As for Fairy Tail Team B, Nero takes Jellal’s place on the roster, while Cana, who replaced Jellal in canon after Day 2, is on the team from the start.
** Wally participates in the Hidden Event on Day 1 instead of Nobarly.
** Thanks to the training she received from Lady and Trish, Lucy [[CurbStompBattle completely dominates]] Flare in their match, and Flare’s attempt to take Asuka hostage is quickly foiled thanks to Modeus. [[InSpiteOfANail Sadly though, Raven Tail still cheats, costing Lucy a victory.]]
** Because Jellal is not on Team B, Nero ends up fighting Jura on Day 1. In canon, Jura won due to Ultear and Meredy interfering to keep Jellal’s cover intact. Here, the fight ends in a draw since Nero has no need to hold back.
** During the Chariots event, Lucia participates for Mermaid Heel instead of Risley, and manages to get first place.
** [[spoiler:Sapphire is revealed to be a double agent spying on Raven Tail for Mermaid Heel. After Raven Tail is disqualified, Sapphire rejoins Mermaid Heel, taking Beth’s place on the team.]]
** Wendy and Sherria’s match in canon was a draw. Here, thanks to the extra training she received from Modeus, and fighting smart, Wendy is able to walk away with a win.
** While Lucy is still outmatched against Minerva during the Naval Battle, her quick thinking and use of Aquarius leads to both of them being knocked out, causing them to both get first place. However, [[SoreLoser Minerva]] attacking Lucy in a fit of rage after the Battle causes her points to be cut in half, giving Fairy Tail first place.
** At Vergil’s request to the King, the two-on-two fights on Day 4 become three-on-three fights. Dante and Vergil are part of the Fairy Tail/Sabertooth match with Natsu, Gajeel, Sting and Rogue. Jenny fights with Ichiya and Nichiya against Bacchus, Rocker and Yeager. And due to Sapphire, Lucia and Kagura all being on the team together, their fight with Lamia Scale’s Lyon, Sho and Yuka ends with a victory, as opposed to the draw result from canon.

** Dagon swallowing Lisanna lets her discover that him and Dagon are actually vulnerable from the inside, and takes full advanatage with her Dragon Soul.

* InnocentlyInsensitive: A group of archaeologists request that Fairy Tail cease their hunt for the Infinity Clock, unaware that finding them was the final request of Lucy's father [[spoiler:(or so she thought)]]. To their credit, they apologize and rescind their request immediately after discovering this.

** In ''Fangs Bared'', Erza's childhood friends learn that [[spoiler:she and Fairy Tail are working with Crime Sorcière, including Jellal, to uncover a plot involving an artefact potentially made by Zeref.]]

** In a flashback to when they were kids, Dante acted the part of the monster attacking [[DamselInDistress Lucy]], while Vergil was the hero who saved her, complete 180 to their roles in the present.

** While Gray is annoyed to have Lyon accompany his team in the hunt for the Infinity Clock piece, the latter correctly points out that he has had seven years to hone his skills above that of his fellow apprentice, and that Fairy Tail need all the help they can get on this mission, even if he is using the fact to be condescending to Gray. Even Juvia tells Gray that he is right.
** A group of archaeologists searching for the ruins mentioned in the book 'The Key to the Starry Heavens' all but demand that Fairy Tail not travel there before them, out of fear that they may not be able to examine it themselves. Given Fairy Tails DestructiveSavior tendencies, this fear is not without basis, and they could miss out on valuable research. They do relent after hearing Lucy's personal reasons for wanting to visit though, making the {{Jerkass}} part downplayed.
** Dante is skeptical of Cana's selection of teams for dealing with the Neo Oracion Seis, noting that very few of them have much experience fighting together. This is proven valid given only one group successfully holds off their opponent, [[spoiler:and the fact that Imitatia was revealed to have tampered with the results to send the worst possible teams to each location]].
** From Sabertooth's perspective (especially [[ArrogantKungFuGuy Sting]]), Vergil acts like a hardass who keeps demeaning their abilities despite them being the strongest guild in Fiore, and constantly undermines their leaders authority. It's {{zigzag|gingTrope}}ed in that he's closer to the TokenGoodTeammater, but his point about their arrogance outweighing their abilities remains valid, especially since it's indicated that same overconfidence has left them neglecting their training, confident they can't be beaten.
* LastOfHisKind: During her meeting with Fairy Tail in ''Crimson Wrath'', Yukino notes that she and Lucy may be the last two Celestial Wizards alive, as the number of Celestial Wizards have dropped in the past few years, and the events of the Order of the Sword arc caused it to drop further.
* LevelCap: As revealed [[spoiler:by Sparda]] in ''Fangs Bared'', God Slayer magic cannot grow any stronger past a certain point, even if the users themselves do. This was put in place by the gods themselves to ensure wizards bodies wouldn't break into their respective element from channeling divine power through their very mortal bodies.

* LoopholeAbuse: Lucy and Michelle want to investigate the Clock Piece the formers father for her in his will, but they're not sure if they can dedicate time to doing so... So they put a request up in the guildhall for the job of investigating it, reasoning that there's no rule against a wizard hiring another wizard.

** Caduto refers to a fallen angel, [[spoiler:as a reference to the Neo Oracion Seis members who underwent the same Ascension ceremony the Order of the Sword use to turn members into 'angels', gaining black wings instead of the typical white]].

** PlayedForLaughs [[BlackComedy in a morbid manner]], but Echidna grows increasingly enraged as her opponents kill her children, in spite of the fact that she is using them ''as projectiles'' and minions. Gajeel irritably lampshades it.
** Sabertooth are enraged at both Natsu attacking Minerva, and being docked points from the Naval Battle event while conveniently ignoring it was because Minerva flew off the handle when it was over and loudly threatened to ''cripple'' an already heavily injured Lucy, which is clearly against the rules.
** Sting grows enraged at Dante taunting him over his own guilds philosophy declaring Lector should be killed or tortured despite using that same reasoning to excuse Minerva's NoHoldsBarredBeatdown of Lucy when the latter isn't even a member of their guild. He and Rogue also grow enraged when Dante implies their Dragon parents were weak despite openly bragging about having killed them.

*** Credo, though it overlaps with devils/demons due to [[DivinelyAppearingDemons the origins of his powers]]. Compared to [[spoiler:Angelo Byro's angel-like appearance and even compared to the more humanoid appearance of Neo Oracion Seis Caduto's]], he has a more demonic, yet majestic appearance.

** The Neo Oracion Seis were referred to as the Six Demons in the past, but now have the theme of fallen angels, and are referred to as such by Sanctus. [[spoiler:This goes with their new SuperMode from the Ascension ceremony, that is even dubbed 'Caduto' (meaning fallen).]]

** Mavis reveals that Sparda was quiet the ladies' man back in the day, though with a more gentlemanly approach than Dante. This lines up with "[=DMC5=] Before the Nightmare" where Matier stated that Sparda was was better at dealing with ladies, as well as better at making excuses than his son Dante.

** Fairy Tail and the Order of the Swords search for the Infinity Clock pieces [[spoiler:results in it being formed and allowing the Neo Oracion Seis to swoop in and claim it for themselves. Made worse by the fact that the next chapter reveals said pieces were enchanted so they ''couldn't'' be found by anyone searching for them with evil intent, meaning the villains couldn't have set their plans in motion if the heroes had simply left them alone.]]
** The Rune Knights sent to [[spoiler:guard the Celestial Wizards]] tragically make little difference, with their arrival actually ''reminding'' several Neo Oracion Seis members of their mission, causing them t break off from their fights with the various Fairy Tail and Order of the Sword members.

** The Neo Oracion Seis deliver one to Dante in their first encounter with the heroes, which was so severe that he took the longest to recover despite his HealingFactor (although, it was noted that Dante was extremely exhausted and almost out of demonic power due to battling Byro and using up the remaining of his demonic power he had left in an attempt to destroy the Infinity Clock).

* NonActionGuy: Warrens Telepathy makes him useful for communications and logistics, but he has little to no combat skills. He explicitly states his magic is unable to [[MindRape menatlly attack opponents]].
* NotDistractedByTheSexy: The team sent to fight Dagon and Berial don't fall for [[LuringInPrey their trap]], and even proceed to insult them before the demons emerge.

** Dante's is his [[spoiler:[[TheJuggernaut Dreadnaught form]], which he unlocked during his battle Gilver out of desperation to protect his friends and avenge [[ParentalSubstitute Nell Goldstein]]. The form lets him absorb the power of any attack his opponent throws at him and use it boost his own, reflecting his desire to protect his new FamilyOfChoice and strike back at those who would harm them, essentially acting as a shield.]]

* PetTheDog: When Jiemma orders Yukino to strip down before leaving Sabertooth as punishment for her loss, Vergil stops her partway through by placing his coat on her back, and gets the master to back down with a an exhange of DeathGlare's. Despite Jiemma calling her a disgrace, Vergil's last words to her make it clear he considered her a valued addition to the guild, which she appreciates.
* PowerIncontinence: Carla's {{Seer}} powers are unusable for most of the first two arcs, which she theorizes might be because of all the time they missed.

* PragmaticVillainy: DiscussedTrope. Lady points out to [[LoanShark Twilight Ogre]] that they could have gotten more money from Fairy Tail in the long run by simply waiting till they could pay, rather than regularly harassing their members and wrecking their guildhall, something that diminishes their ability to do jobs and get money to pay them with.

** Sparda keeps many of his exploits under wraps where possible, for fear of Mundus and other power hungry demons seeking RevengeByProxy on anyone involved in them. [[spoiler:Hence why the existence of the original Order of the Sword was covered up.]]
* QualityVsQuantity: The Fairy Tail Exceeds are surprised when Katja, a Celestial wizard, can summon two spirits at once, something the older and more experienced Lucy cannot do. She explains that her spirits use silver keys, which are less powerful than the gold ones Lucy uses, but required less power to summon.

** From the rest of the arc, the Neo Oracion Seis fit the role, acting as the biggest physical threats for most of the arc. [[spoiler:While [[AttackReflector Midnight]][=/=][[CastingAShadow Brain II]] makes part of the BigBadDuumvirate with [[TheChessmaster Sanctus]], the other members fit the bill quite well]]. These include [[PoisonousPerson Cobra]], [[AxCrazy Rac]][[SuperSpeed er]], [[SinisterScythe Eri]][[EmptyShell gor]], [[KatanasAreJustBetter Gil]][[BackFromTheDead ver]] and [[EvilTwin Glo]][[ShockAndAwe ria]]. [[spoiler:And then there's [[HiddenVillain Imitatia, aka, Michelle Lobster]], who acted as TheMole for the BigBagDuumvirate for the entire arc!]]

** Minor, but Lucy begins to wear her canon post-timeskip outfit with the addition of Dante's half of the Perfect Amulet while beginning to take on the role of a demon hunter.
** Vergil wears an outfit based on his [[VideoGame/DMCDevilMayCry reboot counterpart]] reflecting the changes he has gone through over the timeskip.

* {{Squick}}: Everyone's response to seeing Sugarboys Hound Dogs for the first time.

** [[spoiler:Midnight, Erigor, and Racer of the Neo-Oracion Seis have their own Angel forms called Cadutos.]]

* SurroundedByIdiots: He never outright says it, but this seems to Vergil's opinion as a member of Sabertooth, finding their arrogance in their power and inability to acknowledge others may surpass them to be grating. He outright admits to Dante he sees them as a means to get stronger, and nothing more.

* TechnicianVersusPerformer: Just like canon, this sums up the general approach Vergil and Dante have towards their skillsets respectively. Vergil has amassed an impressive arsenal of powerful Devil Arms, has polished his technique with each to achieve great skill in their use, and tends to favour using one at a time while switching over to another to better adapt to different situations. While Dante does train with his equally impressive arsenal, Erza notes his greatest strength lies in his creativity, rapidly switching between weapons even mid-combo and using several weapons and abilities in combination for outside-the-box tactics capable of catching even his more experienced brother off guard. A watching Bruni outright sums up their clash as "a battle of creativity and mastery".

* TooDumbToLive: The [[spoiler:demon]] guards running Devils Prison make one mistake after another when dealing with Dante and Erza. While they do place a magic inhibiting collar on Erza, they fail to take measures against Dante beyond confiscating his sword and guns. Then, they lock the two in the same cell, making it easy for them to work together. Finally, there's their game of 'Tag', in which they let all prisoners out of their cells for the night as entertainment, allowing the two to run roughshod over all the guards and rescue any prisoners.

** The Order of the Sword (especially [[SmugSnake Mary Hughes]]) expect Fairy Tail to be a bunch of pushovers in their first encounter, and are shocked when they find themselves on the losing end of the battle. Justified as their prominent members have only recently returned and the guild's reputation has fallen greatly over the seven years they were missing, though Mary doesn't seem to learn her lesson in any of their subsequent encounters, always being shocked whenever they defeat her.
** Raven Tail ''severely'' underestimate Lucy's capabilities in the Grand Magic Games, being shocked that she learned hand-to-hand and greater skill with her whips, which put Flare decisively on the losing end of their fight.
** Despite Vergil's warnings, Sting and Rogue go into the three on three fight with Fairy Tail expecting a to be able to steamroll their opponents, and are completely blindsided when they find themselves on the ''losing'' side of the fight.
* UnrelatedInTheAdaptation: The writer has confirmed that Nero is not going to be Vergil's son in this series because when Nero appears, he'll be around 17, whereas Dante and Vergil first appear in their 20's, which means Vergil would have to have fathered Nero when he was still a kid. [[spoiler:This becomes subverted when Chapter 16, ''A New Devil Awakens'', reveals that Nero was created from the DNA of Sparda's corpse, which the Order of the Sword found and has been keeping. So instead of being Vergil's son and Dante's nephew, Nero is Vergil's and Dante's half-brother.]]

** Chapter 40, ''The Eclipse Project'', gives off some huge revelations. [[spoiler:In addition to Fairy Tail learning about the three-way war between demons, dragons that sided with humanity, and dragons that stood against humanity, which led to the creation of Dragon Slayer Magic, they also learn how Acnologia used to be a human until he became a dragon himself. Even more shocking is Acnologia was the one to kill Sparda. The Eclipse Project is also revealed, and Lucy and Yukino are taken into custody with Arcadios. Oh, and Vergil becomes the new guildmaster of Sabertooth after killing Jiemma.]]
* WhamShot: Two big ones from Chapter 36. [[spoiler:The first comes when Raven Tail prepares to gang up on Laxus in a 6-on-1 fight only for Sapphire to suddenly punch Obra and immobilize him to the shock of everyone. The second one comes seconds later when she shows Mermaid Heel’s guildmark on her shoulder, revealing that she was a spy the whole time for Kurenai.]]

** Wally calls out Bacchus for his bet against Elfman, making him apologise to Fairy Tail for it when the day is over. While they are somewhat mollified when Bacchus explains his request to keep him company meant ''just that'' and nothing more, they still call him out for making such a statement.

** Part of the reason the Neo Oracion Seis [[CurbStompBattle steamrolled]] so many of Fairy Tail and the Order of the Sword's strongest members in their first encounter was because the two had just worn each other down and were taken by complete surprise both by the Dark Guilds appearance, [[TookALevelInBadass and their new abilities]].

** A retroactive example, since [[spoiler:Imitatia messed with Cana's predictions]], the Fairy Tail teams sent to face the Neo Oracion Seis were the worst matchups possible.

* XanatosGambit: The hunt for the Infinity Clock pieces. [[spoiler:Since they couldn't be found by anyone with malicious intentions, Sanctus and the Neo Oracion Seis just needed to wait for Fairy Tail or the members of the Order of the Sword to ([[UnwittingPawn unknowingly]]) find them on their behalf, after which they could just take them all from whoever succeeded.]]
* YinYangBomb: It is revealed that this is how the [[ArtifactOfDoom Infinity Clock]] was created. [[spoiler:Members of the original Order of the Sword (which was founded by Sparda) attempted to combine [[StarPower Celestial magic]] and demonic power to create a weapon capable of wiping out all evil. Unfortunately, the result turned out to be too volatile to control, and too durable to destroy, forcing them to disassemble it and seal away the pieces]].

** The Devil Hand arc has the Seven Deadly Sins, the elite members of the titular dark guild, each with powers and personalities corresponding to the sin they represent. These include [[YinYangBomb Ib]][[SmugSuper lis]] for {{Pride}}, [[BunnyEarsLawyer Mam]][[ExtraOreDinary mon]] for {{Greed}}, [[PoisonousPerson Asmo]][[MoreDeadlyThanTheMale deua]] for {{Lust}}, [[TheBrute Sat]][[BloodKnight an]] for {{Wrath}}, [[PowerCopying Levi]][[ChildMage atha]] for [[GreenEyedMonster Envy]], [[MookMaker Belph]][[TheSlacker egor]] for {{Sloth}}, and [[ExtremeOmnivore Beel]][[CreepyChild zebub]] for Gluttony. This is significant as people representing each sin were needed to raise [[EvilTowerOfOminousness Temen-ni-gru]], in addition to Vergil and Arkham needing minions to keep Fairy Tail busy.

** [[TheGadfly Happy]] refrains from using his {{Catchphrase}} in the middle of a tender moment between [[InterspeciesRomance Angelina and Bradley]], recognizing the heartfelt moment for what it is and not wanting to ruin it.

The climax has an alliance of Fairy Tail, Lamia Scale, Blue Pegasus, [[spoiler:a [[HeelFaceTurn reformed]] Angel alongside [[EnemyMine several members of Devil Hand]]]] fighting off the legions of demons unleashed, [[spoiler:on top of Makarov destroying it with [[HolyHandGrenade Fairy Law]]. Fittingly, the first and second last chapters are titled ''Dawn of Darkness'' and ''Dawn of Light'' respectively.

* BottomlessMagazines: Played straight for the most part with Dante, Lady and Trish.

* CombatBreakdown: Erza and Knightwalkers final battle begins with the two pulling out more and more of their respective arsenals, but by the end both are reduced to hand-to-hand, and eventually just slugging each other in the face.

** Just like [[VideoGame/DevilMayCry3DantesAwakening canon]], Vergil joins Dante in the [[spoiler:the fight against Arkham's OneWingedAngel form]], along with Natsu, who is not happy about it. The feeling is mutual and they go back to fighting as soon as the bigger threat is dealt with.

** The Exceeds look down on humans, viewing them as lesser beings that they must guide, though the latter comes across as CondescendingCompassion ''at best''.
* FlawExploitation: After Gajeel learns that Satans powers [[MakeMyMonsterGrow makes him stronger and bigger with more hits]], he goes full StoneWall with his Iron Dragon Scales, letting his opponent use up the energy he built and tired himself out and managing a VictoryByEndurance.

* ItHasBeenAnHonor: When it looks like they'll be overwhelmed by [[spoiler:the sheer number of demons fromt he activated Temen-ni-gru, the members of Fairy Tail, Lamia Scale and Blue Pegasus all give some variation of this to one another. Even [[VillainousFriendship Mammon and Satan]] get in on it.]]

** In the Devil Hand arc, Trish, Modeus, Lucy and Lisanna sit out the fight against Vergil, noting they'd be a liability due to their injuries or lack of power.

*** Evergreen plays this to the hilt, wielding a form of magic she outright calls "Fairy Magic" that lets her manifest wings and many of her attack names are based off various fairy myths.

** Blue Pegasus: The Pegasus, a beautiful flying horse that is much more powerful than it's appearance would suggest, [[AgentPeacock in line with their members formiddable skill despite their flamboyance]]. They even have a CoolAirship to let them fly around the country.

* NearVillainVictory: As the Earthland members of Fairy Tail grown increasingly exhausted by the final battle, the Edolas army comes rather close to overwhelming them with sheer numbers. Thankfully, [[BigDamnHeroes Edolas Fairy Tail shows up in time to help them out]].

* PretenderDiss: Modeus derides Nelo Angelos boast of being made of Sparda's essence in their final clash, noting that even with that he still [[EvilCannotComprehendGood doesn't understand the true source of his teachers strength]].

** [=FoD=] is also told with a HaremGenre style mixed with ''Dragon Ball Z'' elements, later adding [[MassiveMultiplayerCrossover even more elements from completely difference series]] for the sake of the RuleOfCool. [=FmC=], while spending time [[FusionFic recounting prior plot points for both franchises]] manages to stick with just the two franchises and expands more on the elements of both franchises, all the while maintaining consistency with its elements.

** The next arc is the Edolas arc, which reintroduces Lisanna and [[spoiler:reveals the possibility of Dante and Lucy being related to each other.]

* OverprotectiveDad: {{Deconstructed|Trope}} with Mark to his daughter Angelina. He disapproves of her relationship with Bradley, and tries to keep her safe, but does so by locking her in her room and slaps and yells at her when she disobeys. What's more, this dislike of Bradley causes him to suspect him of the recent murders and hire Fairy Tail to kill the man based on very little evidence, which they vocally call him out on.

* DidntThinkThisThrough: Narrowly averted. Erza concocts a plan to apprehend a group of bandits that has Natsu inside a wagon with the others for the ambush. Fortunately, Lisanna reminds her about his [[WeaksauceWeakness severs motion sickness]], and she concedes to having him and Happy observe from above.

* WhipItGood: Lucy makes greater use of her whip for combat. [[spoiler:She also receives an upgrade in the form of [[WesternAnimation/Castlevania2017 the Morningstar]] from Capricorn.]]
