* SuperpowerLottery: Magic isn't nearly as rare as in RWBY canon, but any use of it is still treated as a very big feal by those in the know.

* WeakButSkilled: Emerald's deck runs Fortune Lady's, full of low level monsters with minimal attack points, yet they have a variety of useful effects, defensively and offensively. When combined with her arsenal of spell and traps, she managed to not only dispatch some of Coco's strongest monsters, but even turned her attempts at burn damage against her.

** Red Eyes seem to value a duelists potential and dedication to living up to said potential more than their moral alignment, as seen by Rhodes monsters willingness to work with Cinder after she killed him. They also refused to be summoned during her duel with him since he "betrayed his potential" by .

** How Ironwood lost his hand and gained his Semblance is explained via his DarkAndTroubledPast. Fresh out of Atlas Academy and needing money for his sisters medical bills, he and his former teammates were called up to take a job by their former leader, him being lead to believe it was just defending a shipment for the Ebi family. It was actually a case of human trafficking regarding Faunus refugees brought about by the then recent Faunus Rights Revolution, all of his teammates knowing the truth but just not caring. Learning the truth caused "Mettle" to awaken, and gave him the resolve to oppose and subsequently kill his former teammates, his ex-leader managing to take his hand from him before dying. Said incident taught him to choose his friends more carefully, which in turn led to developing friendships with Clover Ebi and Akira Zaizen.

** Trope regarding Ozpin and Qrow. Both are largely the same in terms of characterization, but there is one minor difference in Ozpin's methodology: his willingness to go to certain lengths even if he feels horrible about it, something he often fought with Ironwood over in canon. Ozpin is genuinely terrified over the threat the "Emperors" pose, to the point he is willing to engage in DirtyBusiness and have otherwise innocent people killed if it means stopping the Emperors, even if they were members of his inner circle like once was. Qrow's UndyingLoyalty towards Ozpin likewise leaves him all too willing to carry out orders regarding assassinating them, contrasted with Taiyang severing ties with both of them for being willing to kill innocents at all, and Ironwood seeing for himself just how far Ozpin was willing to go for "the greater good".

Even outside of that, Ozpin's treatment of Team RWBY is explicitly compared to grooming them to be his replacements for Team STRQ, something that in canon was only suggested by Raven, and even then was mostly implied to be her bitterness and disdain for Ozpin doing the talking, leaving Ozpin a much more morally grey figure than in canon.
