From Schmidt’s description of what happened to him after he ‘activated’ the tesseract, his mind was essentially dispersed across Earth’s upper atmosphere until he managed to pull himself back together enough to transmit a signal and lure another humanoid body into space that he could possess. However, considering that Schmidt appeared as the unwilling guardian of the Soul Stone on Voromir in Film/AvengersInfinityWar, it could be that what appeared on Voromir was essentially an extension of the Soul Stone itself animating Schmidt’s body, accounting for his more subdued manner, while his mind remained around Earth to try and return in another host.

While the reader is aware by this point that the only other Infinity Stone on Earth is the Time Stone, considering the odds of two Stones being on the same planet by chance must be considerably small, it’s possible that all six Stones were on Earth at some point before being sent elsewhere and the search just picked up traces of the Stones’ energies.
**Granted, Tony is later able to confirm that the other Stones aren’t on Earth in the present and even identify their present spatial locations, but considering that the Time Stone is kept secret by the Masters of the Mystic Arts it’s not unreasonable to assume the order were able to set up a ‘fake’ trail for the Time Stone’s location.

!!The Schmidt that possesses Shipley here and the Schmidt that appeared on Voromir in Infinity War are the same character ‘split’ into two.
From Schmidt’s description of what happened to him after he ‘activated’ the tesseract, his mind was essentially dispersed across Earth’s upper atmosphere until he managed to pull himself back together enough to transmit a signal and lure another humanoid body into space that he could possess. However, considering that Schmidt appeared as the unwilling guardian of the Soul Stone on Voromir in Film/AvengersInfinityWar, it could be that what appeared on Voromir was essentially an extension of the Soul Stone itself animating Schmidt’s body, accounting for his more subdued manner, while his mind remained around Earth to try and return in another host.
