Jaune often serves as the lead in these vignettes, and to that end, usually isn't in the audience himself. Whether there's an overarching plot and if characters can freely leave varies, but either way, these fics always start with only the core characters in the audience, with more and more of the show's supporting cast joining every few chapters.

Depending on the fic, they got to the past (i.e., the show sometime before Volume 3) intentionally and with a plan already in mind or accidentally stumbled upon a method of time travel -- in Ruby's case, this is usually reaching unheard of speeds with her Semblance -- and decide to just roll with it.

* Salem resurrecting Pyrrha (or rarely, Summer) as a humanoid Grimm. Shows up in fanart more than fanfic, but it's still a popular idea that grew in popularity after it's revealed in Volume 8 that Salem has indeed experimented with this in the past.

* Any fics where Jaune or Sun get together with Ruby or Yang eventually bring up [[LikeParentLikeSpouse how similar the boy is to their father Taiyang]]. Even fics where none of these romances are in play may eventually have one of the girls have this realization.

* Alternatively, Jaune's [[ObliviousToLove romantic obliviousness]] will be [[CharacterExaggeration ramped up]] alongside all the other characters falling in love with him, resulting in conversations with hilarious misunderstandings.

* {{Betrayal Fic}}s starring Ruby or Jaune. For Jaune specifically, it is usually because the others don't take his fake transcripts well and so immediately rat him out to Opzin to get him expelled.

* Fics where [[ForWantOfANail the characters form different teams than in canon]].

* Yang and Ruby being revealed as [[FamilyRelationshipSwitcheroo biological cousins instead of half-sisters]], with Qrow as Ruby's birth father. Alternatively, fics revolving around the FamilyRelationshipSwitcheroo itself, without either of them knowing.[[note]]This has been explicitly {{Jossed}} since Volume 2.[[/note]]
* Ruby being {{betray|alFic}}ed by her loved ones, leaving, and joining sides with someone else.
** Some other characters besides Ruby can be as prominent to this, the most frequent being Jaune, with the setup for him often being that the others don't take his fake transcripts well and immediately rat him out to Opzin, getting him expelled. It isn't uncommon for Ruby and/or Nora to be on Jaune's side, however, either defending him from the start or regretting their failure to do so and being the only ones to seek reconciliation.
* After Roman was eaten by a Grimm in a fight with Ruby, many fanfics have Neo going after Ruby in revenge. As of volume 6, Neo canonically ''is'' out for revenge, though her first target was Cinder instead of Ruby.
* There are many PeggySue fanfics themed around stopping Pyrrha's death in Volume 3.
** More generally, PeggySue fics where a character (usually an older Jaune or Ruby) comes back to prevent a BadFuture where Salem won. Depending on the fic, they got to the past (i.e., the show sometime before Volume 3) intentionally and with a plan already in mind or accidentally stumbled upon a method of time travel[[note]]In Ruby's case, this is usually reaching unheard of speeds with her Semblance while retreating a fight[[/note]] and decide to just roll with it.

* AccidentalMarriage fics wherein Jaune and one of the female cast end up getting drunk one night, and wake up the following day from the subsequent blackout having somehow gotten married. These fics appropriately tend have "Drunken Marriage" somewhere in the title, and are naturally comedic (or least lighthearted) in tone. Bonus points if the wedding night resulted in a pregnancy.
* A concept that saw a spike in popularity after ''Fanfic/WeissReacts'' is where the cast will be put in a theater setting to "watch" themselves be [[LetsWatchOurShowPlot put in different scenarios based on existing works and comment on it]], a la ''Series/MysteryScienceTheater3000''. With a few exceptions (exceptions being reactions to the actual works themselves), Jaune serves as the lead in these vignittes (and to that end, won't be in the audience). These fics tend to follow a formula of some omnipotent being abducting the cast and making them watch the "multiverse" (the being's reasons for such may vary, as well as if the characters can leave or not), and usually don't deviate from the formula unless there is a plot going on the viewer's side.

* Salem resurrecting Pyrrha (or rarely, Summer) as a humanoid Grimm. Shows up in fanart more than fanfic, but it's still a popular idea.

* Stories with Oscar or another character somehow traveling back in time to before the fall of Beacon have become common.
* Jaune/Ruby and Sun/Ruby fan-works joking about [[LikeParentLikeSpouse how similar the boy is to Ruby's father Taiyang]]. Jaune/Yang fics are more rare (and Sun/Yang fics ''very'' rare), but the comparison to Taiyang is still often brought up.

* Fics about Cinder getting rescued from the Glass Unicorn by some character or other, or sticking it out and actually getting to be a Huntress, sprung up like wildfire after the episode Midnight aired.

* Jaune AU fics often have Jaune never getting into Beacon in the first place due to the school rejecting his forged transcripts.

* {{Betrayal Fic}}s where Jaune is ostracized after he gets kicked out of Beacon.

However, ''Franchise/BlazBlue'' and ''Franchise/{{Persona}}'' tend to have the most crossovers with ''RWBY'' due to how the former has many similarities to ''RWBY'', and the latter having a school setting.

The RWBY team as a whole can be subjected to the BetrayalFic (wheter be one of them or the whole team).
