It is alluded to that these tatoos were originally a part of the human sacrific ritual on the Promised Day. Edward has since learned to use them in ways unrelated to their original function, though using them in this way is implied to carry some inherent risk.

Ed does manage to square the talking animals into his worldview, much the same way he does with ninjutsu and everything else he doesn't understand about the shinobi world at this point--which is to say, [[GivingUpOnLogic he mostly avoids thinking about it too hard. ]]

Even afterwards Edward doesn't seem entirely sure what to make of the talking animals in the Naruto Universe; Especailly when the closest point of reference Edward has for talking animals up to this point are human-based chimera, like Nina. While Ed does manage to square the talking animals into his worldview, he does so
mostly avoids thinking about it too hard.

* DisabledSnarker: Ed is the obvious example. In their discussion of Lee's own injury and potential disabliliry Ed notes that Lee doesn't nearly have the necessary sass to qualify for that position.

[[OddFriendship unconventional]] friendship, Ed and Tayuya's proximity to each other ends up ''bolstering'' their resistance, rather than tearing it down. ]]

Edward Elric of ''Manga/FullmetalAlchemist'' is somehow dropped into the world of ''{{Naruto}}'' like a rock into a pond and tries to cope with it, with hysterical results. The fic starts in the "Search For Tsunade" {{story arc}}, and almost immediately during the encounter with Naruto and two Akatsuki members, Itachi and Kisame. After that, Edward is promptly arrested and sent to the Interrogation Department, where HilarityEnsues.

** He also gets Naruto start thinking more carefully when he teaches him not to wave his cash filled wallet around. As a result, Naruto’s money isn’t taken off him and spent by Jiraiya at the festival, the way it was in {{Naruto}} canon. Instead, Naruto spends his money at a ringtoss game, where he tries to win something ''"cool"'' for Ed. [[spoiler: [[ChekhovsGun The prize Naruto ends up winning at the ringtoss is far more pertinent to the plot than the narration initially lets on.]] ]]

Not entirely surprising given the prevalence of, and the attitudes toward this trope regarding actual organs in Naruto cannon.

** Edward's ''third'' attempt at pulling this is similarly unsuccessful. Ed pretends to take a shower and while the water is running he tries to escape out the window. He is caught almost immediately, but pretends to be offended that they would watch him in the shower. Neji points out that he ''wasn't'' in the shower, but continuing in such escape attempts is a great way to end up being supervised in the bathroom. [[ArsonMurderandJaywalking Also, he should stop wasting water.]]

** Ino (with some [[StopHelpingMe "help" from Naruto]]) also tries to charm Edward for information to pass on to Sasuke. She hasn't improved from when she tried to seduce Neji during the Chunin exams and the whole thing becomes awkward very quickly.

* TheSpook: Edward himself, from Konoha's perspective anyway. [[OutsideContextVillain No one knows what he is, where he is from, or what he is capable of.]] It doesn't help that Konoha is feeling very vulnerable and is still unorganized and undermanned after Orochimaru's invasion.

* EyeScream: Ed's use of flame alchemy not only left Sasuke with an embarrassing case of artificial sunburn, the explosion also left him temporarily blind.
