In this fanfic, Hinata, Neji, Sai, and Gaara are all among Sasuke's TrueCompanions as part of the titular group.
** Haku and Kimimaro were anti-villains who never managed to become friends with any of the good guys before they died (besides Haku having a friendly conversation with Naruto when the latter was unaware that the former was also the masked boy working for Zabuza and thus his enemy). In ''Hakumei'', they're part of the titular group and thus are friends with seven of those good guys.

A ''Manga/{{Naruto}}'' ForWantOfANail that takes the WhatIf of [[RightWingMilitiaFanatic Danzo's bastardry]] taken to its LogicalExtreme. Danzo kills TheLeader of the Leaf Village and in the following ReignOfTerror takes over. Unfortunately, he didn't count on six neglected children witnessing him in the act. As the kids escape with secrets given by the dying Hokage, aided and abetted by one of the ANBU, they pick up other lost children... and a force that will be the twilight of its enemies is born.

* AdaptationalEarlyAppearance: Sai, Gaara, Haku, Kimimaro, Tsunade, Shizune, Jiraiya, Isaribi, [[spoiler: Yugito]], and [[spoiler: Madara]] all show up much sooner than in canon. Naruto learns the truth about his parentage and jinchuuriki status when he's only 7 years old, as oppose to when he's 12 years old.

** It's eventually revealed that [[spoiler: Orochimaru]] had a seal on his brain for over a decade and it is implied to have been controlling his actions, meaning he's not totally culpable for what he did during that time.

** Shisui [[spoiler: betrays and attacks Itachi, who is forced to kill him in self defense]].

** Sasuke hates the Uchiha clan with the exception of Itachi, while in canon it was other way around.

* AgeLift: [[spoiler: Yugito]] is 19 years old in this fic, several years younger than she is in canon.

** [[spoiler: Chiyo]] steps in to help Sakura after she saves her from [[spoiler: Kabuto]]. She could have defended herself, but she's impressed that Sakura would risk losing her fight with Kin and Zaku to protect a random bystander.
** [[spoiler: Yugito]] only began fighting with Hakumei because of a bet but stays with them instead of returning to her village, where she was treated horribly [[spoiler: for being a jinchuuriki]].

* BetrayalByOffspring: How [[spoiler: Mikoto]] feels about [[spoiler: Sasuke]] after he [[spoiler: chooses Hakumei over Konoha. She tells Hiashi that he should feel the same way about Hinata, but Hiashi is more loyal to his family than to his village]].

* BigBadassBattleSequence: Chapters 25 to 32 are spent detailing [[spoiler: Hakumei/Kinen's attack on Konoha, which coincides with a joint invasion from Suna and Oto. It quickly devolves into a complicated and confused MeleeATrois involving three jinchuuriki, all three Sannin, the Sound Four, members of the Akatsuki, the most elite members of ROOT, the Uchiha Military Police, and many, many others]].

** Itachi feels this way about Sasuke, it's just that he can't ''find'' him [[spoiler: for a few years]].

* BrainwashedAndCrazy: [[spoiler: Orochimaru.]] Also, this is what Tsume ''thinks'' is going on when the "kidnapped children" reappear.

* BreathWeapon: Shizune teaches [[spoiler: Hinata]] a jutsu that involves exhaling DeadlyGas.

* ChekhovsGun: Hinata, Gaara, and Sai get an umbrella from an Ame nin they fought in the Forest of Death that can shot a large number of senbon at once and decide to give it Haku. He later uses it [[spoiler: during the Chunin war]].

* TheChessmaster: Danzo frames Iwa for the assassination of the Third Hokage and uses the fallout to manipulate his way into power. Once he becomes the Fifth Hokage, he slowly, subtly turns Konoha into a PoliceState. [[spoiler: He's outdone, however, by Madara, who has been manipulating the whole situation from afar the entire time]].

** [[spoiler: Chiyo]] holds a grudge against Konoha for what it did to her family, but she doesn't extent that grudge to the current generation because they're not to blame for what the actions of the older generations.
** When [[spoiler: the six missing children are revealed to be part of the group attacking Konoha, multiple people initially assume they were being lied to, manipulated, or brainwashed by whoever "kidnapped" them. So, they're willing to forgive the children and try to make them loyal to Konoha again. Danzo places a kill-on-sight order on all the children to prevent the truth from coming out]].

* ClearMyName: [[spoiler: Naruto]] is falsely accused of entering the Ninja District of Konoha, something forbidden to foreigners, [[spoiler: by the Oto nin. Fortunately, Ibiki is on his side and believes his story]].

* ConflictingLoyalty: [[spoiler: Lee briefly experiences this when he learns that Gai is fighting against Konoha, but he quickly chooses his teacher over his village]].

* CreepyChild: Sai, Gaara and [[spoiler:Shino]] are heroic examples and Yumi is a villainous one. [[spoiler: Subverted in Yumi's case because she's not really a child, [[OlderThanTheyLook just passing for one]].]]

* DarkestHour: None of the kids are sure they'll survive their first winter. [[spoiler: That's when they meet Tsunade...]]

* DirtyCoward: Sakon and Ukon leave Tayuya to fend for herself due to their fear of [[spoiler: Kimimaro]].

** [[spoiler: Tensions between the Main Family and the Branch family have been rising ever since Hinata and Neji were banished. After the Chunin Exams devolve into a village-wide battle, half the Hyuuga clan turns against Hiashi, leading to a civil war within the family]].
** [[spoiler: Oto falls apart after the failed invasion and Suna is in complete disarray because the Kazekage is missing]].

* EtTuBrute: [[spoiler: Zabuza never forgave Kisame for exposing his plan to assassinate the Mizukage and breaking up the Seven Swordsmen]].

** Naruto vs Sora. Sora is loud and brash like Naruto used to be when he was little (and still was in canon). Not to mention, [[spoiler: Sora has some of the Kyuubi's chakra, but Naruto is the actual junchuuriki]].
** Hiashi vs Mikoto and Fugaku. [[spoiler: Hiashi recognizes Hinata and Neji as soon as he sees them again, and risks his life to protect them even after they attack Konoha. Hinata is completely heartbroken by his death. Mikoto and Fugaku don't recognize Sasuke, and Mikoto denounces him as a traitor when he chooses not to stay with her. Sasuke doesn't feel anything when Fugaku dies]].
* ForgottenFirstMeeting: [[spoiler: Sasuke and Yumi]] previously knew each other because [[spoiler: they're both from the same clan and she was engaged to his brother. Sasuke doesn't recognize her at first because she's pretending to be younger than she really is; Yumi doesn't recognize him because she thought he had been taken by Iwa]].

* GambitPileup: [[spoiler: Hakumei and Kinen were planning a rebellion in Konoha on the same day Suna and Oto were planning an invasion. Things quickly spiral out of control after there's a mix-up in signals and they mistakenly launch their respective attacks too early. It's later revealed that Madara Uchiha planned for this exact thing to happen, and both sides were just his pawns]].

* GreaterScopeVillain: [[spoiler: Madara Uchiha. He manipulated the whole situation by hiding the children from Danzo so they could escape Konoha with the truth about Hiruzen's death]].

** Hakumei deliberately hide how skilled they are during the Chunin Exams, both to avoid suspicion about why they're all so better than average genin and to make sure they aren't identified by their distinctive fighting techniques. [[spoiler: Once the rebellion/invasion begins in earnest, the gloves are off]].

** Hyuuga Hiashi disowns Hinata and Neji after Hinata removes Neji's [[RestrainingBolt Caged Bird seal]]. [[spoiler: He still loves them both and wishes he didn't have to do it]].

* InsaneTrollLogic: [[spoiler: Yumi murders her best friend Hana in cold blood while Hana is trying to comfort her, all to gain the Mangekyo Sharingan so she can defeat Itachi. But instead of seeing this as a horrible betrayal of someone who loved her, Yumi sees it as Hana giving her a gift and she promises to make sure Hana is seen as a hero for "sacrificing herself".]]

** [[spoiler: Neji]] thinks it's weird to fight alongside [[spoiler: Gai and Lee]].

** Yumi mocks Sasuke for being an orphan with no clan, completely unaware that he's from the same clan as her. In fact, [[spoiler: she would have been his sister-in-law if her ArrangedMarriage to Itachi had occurred as planned]].

** [[spoiler: Kimimaro]] ends up fighting against [[spoiler: the Sound Four]].

* ItsPersonal: Sasuke always disliked Yumi, but when she [[spoiler:nearly kills Sakura in the Chuunin Exams]] he declares a blood feud against her clan. [[spoiler: Which is also ''his'' clan.]]

* KillAndReplace: [[spoiler: Kusa hired Hakumei to pretend to be Kusa nin after the genin team they sent never arrived in Konoha. Later, the genin team does arrive, but they don't notice that Hakumei are fakes. As it turns out, they're not real Kusa nin either: the Sound Four killed the real genin team and stole their identities. Tayuya impersonated Kiyoko, Sakon and Ukon impersonated Ren, Kidomaru impersonated Aoi, and Jirobo impersonated the jonin sensei Tarou]].

* KilledOffScreen: [[spoiler: Inoichi Yamanaka is confirmed dead after Hakumei, Kinen, and their allies retreat from Konoha]].

* LeaveYourQuestTest: [[spoiler: Kiba]] tries this with Naruto, only for Naruto to swiftly reject it. [[spoiler: Mikoto]] also tries this with Sasuke, and he's more conflicted before ultimately rejecting it as well.

* TheLostLenore: Implied regarding [[spoiler: Zabuza's former teammate, Miyako]].

* MeleeATrois: The [[spoiler:Kinen/Hakumei rebellion]]? It's on the same day as the Sound/Sand Invasion. Cue a three-way battle between [[spoiler: the rebels, the invaders, and Danzo's forces]]. Things get messy quickly, and because no one planned for this, [[spoiler:no one wins]]. All three sides take losses, but [[spoiler:Hakumei and the exposed members of LaResistance have to cut and run, leaving Danzou still in power.]]

* NiceJobFixingItVillain: [[spoiler: Dosu, Kin, and Zaku]] attempt to get Naruto disqualified from the Chunin Exams, but it just results in him meeting [[spoiler: Yugito]] and getting her to ally with Hakumei.

* NotQuiteDead: [[spoiler: Kisame is revealed to still be alive after his fight with Zabuza]].

* ObnoxiousInLaws: Downplayed. [[spoiler: Sasuke knew Yumi when he was little because she used to be engaged to his older brother, and he hated her back then as well]].

* OlderThanTheyLook: [[spoiler: Uchiha Yumi]] manages to fool everyone about her actual age, although most people think ''something'' is off about her.
* {{Omake}}: There are short scenes at the end of most chapters, mostly for fun with loose connections to the main story (though some are referenced in the story proper) including one that has [[spoiler: Santa Claus]] make an appearance; as Naruto declares, he may be the greatest ninja in the world for sneaking past the Sannin.

They knock him out and bring him to Hinata, who discovers a powerful seal on his brain]].

* ParentsKnowTheirChildren: A point of contrast between [[spoiler: Mikoto and Fugaku Uchiha and Hiashi Hyuuga. The Uchihas fail to recognize Sasuke when he's standing right in front of them. Mikoto learns his true identity from a third party and Fugaku doesn't live to learn the truth. Hiashi recognizes Hinata and Neji the instant he sees them, despite the genjutsu used to hide their Byakugan]].

* UndergroundCity: [[spoiler: Hakumei retreat to the dead village of Uzu. After carving out space underneath the ruins, they make it their new base of operations. Three years later, with defectors from Konoha and other allies living there as well, they've essentially resurrected Uzu as a Hidden Village]].
* UnwittingPawn: [[spoiler: Hakumei don't know that Madara Uchiha had been using them to strike against Konoha. He helped them escape so they could return to cause turmoil in the future. Danzo, Itachi, and Orochimaru's actions were all part of Madara's plan as well]].
* UriahGambit: Danzo sends shinobi who were loyal to the Third Hokage on missions that he knows they can't handle as a way to get them killed. That's how [[spoiler: Asuma's brother]] died.
* VillainTeamUp: [[spoiler: Yumi joins the Akatsuki, effectively taking Itachi's place after he defects]].

** [[spoiler: Kimimaro]] planned to kill each member of the Sound Four. After he kills Jirobo and Kidomaru, Sakon and Ukon completely abandon Tayuya to save their own necks. Disgusted by their lack of remorse for leaving their teammate to die, he decides to just take Tayuya prisoner.
** [[spoiler: Kiba]] doesn't understand why [[spoiler: Naruto]] didn't kill him when he had the chance because it runs counter to everything he'd been told by [[spoiler: Danzo]].
