''Ascension'' is a collective name for several Anime/NeonGenesisEvangelion {{Alternate Universe Fic}}s written by ''amitakartok''. Originally referring to just a single story, the author later undertook CanonWelding to bring several separate stories into a single multiverse - [[TheMultiverse literally]].

----

->[...] this is closer to Aeon Natum Engel than Nobody Dies. You're taking the ideas of Eva and putting them in a more hard sci-fi/Half Life verse. I say go for it.
-->--''Gregg Landsman about SCE''

''[[http://www.fanfiction.net/s/6313201/1 Strategic Cyborg Evangelion]]'' is a RealRobotGenre crossover between Evangelion and VideoGame/HalfLife. It's basic premise is simple: what if the Black Mesa Incident and the subsequent Combine invasion was Second Impact? And what if it happened two years ahead of SEELE's schedule, massively interfering with their plans? Humanity recovered from this calamity and even managed to carve out a small interstellar empire... only for the Angels to start attacking Earth in 2041, 23 years after the Combine occupation force was defeated. And the G-Man is definitely up to something as well.

Good thing then that the Artificial Evolution Laboratory secretly and illegally developed Evangelions, even if they're only prototypes and the pilots are {{Ordinary High School Student}}s... [[AdaptationalBadass or are they]]?

The primary changes regarding the cast are Kaworu replacing Shinji as main protagonist and pilot of Unit-01, Rei having the surname Ikari and living with Yui, Yui not having undergone the contact experiment as the Evas now contain sentient [=AIs=] and Asuka not being involved with the Eva project [[spoiler:until later]]. While there's plenty of EarlyInstallmentWeirdness, the author is performing an ongoing rewrite and restructuring of the story, currently complete up to chapter 14 - as such, all tropes below are subject to change.

There are also two omakes. ''The Present'' serves as a {{prequel}} of sorts by introducing Rei's character as a PintsizedPowerhouse ActionGirl, while ''Valentine Shenanigans'' has Kaworu learning the hard way that most bishies have an UnwantedHarem.

The fanfic has a [[Characters/{{Ascension}} Characters page]] and a [[ShoutOut/{{Ascension}} Shout Outs page]].

NotToBeConfusedWith the fantasy DatingSim -like game by Rinmaru.

------
!!Strategic Cyborg Evangelion has examples of:

* ActionPrologue - the first chapter opens with what appears to be a CurbstompBattle ending with a [[ApocalypseHow planetary species extinction apocalypse]] via ColonyDrop. The G-Man's narration implies and the rewrite all but confirms that it's actually Kaworu DreamingOfTimesGoneBy.
* AirborneAircraftCarrier - the Confederate Navy's ''Nexus''-class escort carriers. One appears in the second season, [[DynamicEntry scrambling its fighter wing during atmospheric reentry]].
* AllPlanetsAreEarthLike - Averted. It's specifically mentioned that Earth is the only planet where humans can survive without EVA equipment. Three other Goldilocks planets have been colonized but only Earth has natural surface water.
** Case in point is Polygonus: while being a Goldilocks planet, it has higher surface gravity, an unbreathable nitrogen-helium-[=CO2=] atmosphere and no surface water. The former two is being corrected via {{terraform}}ing.
*** HeavyWorlder is also averted. Children born on Polygonus are mentioned to have a noticeably higher risk of developing skeletal deformities as simply being born on a planet with 1.1g does not make a human adapted to it.
* AncestralWeapon - [[spoiler:the Beretta Shephard gives to Asuka as birthday present is implied to be the very same gun he carried back in ''Opposing Force'']].
* ApocalypseHow - Planetary societal disruption as per the Half-Life verse. Had the Combine occupation lasted another decade, it would've devolved to societal collapse.
* ArtificialGravity - averted. All space scenes have the characters free-floating in zero G.
* AxesAtSchool - Rei routinely brings her [[KnifeNut armory]] to school, much to Hikari's distress.
* BangBangBANG - averted. Unit-01 firing its gatling cannon shatters every window nearby.
* BeigeProse - English isn't the author's first language, plaguing the early chapters with this. It got better as the story progressed, though.
* BigDamnHeroes - [[spoiler:Asuka]] intervenes in the Shamshel battle to [[spoiler:give Kaworu time to undig himself]]. Neither knows who the other is.
** [[spoiler:The first half of the Iruel battle ended up with Asuka and Kaworu getting bailed out by a MysteriousProtector.]]
* BinarySuns - one of the human-inhabited systems is a binary system with all the planets orbiting one of the stars[[note]][[ShownTheirWork which is actually possible]] if the stars orbit each other far enough[[/note]]. Also a case of AlienSky as every planet's night side experiences a midnight red glow from the smaller star for a full half year.
* BiTheWay - [[spoiler:Asuka and Mari]] are both bisexuals but are hiding it from their parents. Cue Hikari freaking out.
** In fact, Asuka has no problems with [[spoiler:[[ADateWithRosiePalms masturbating]] while [[LesYay fantasizing about Mari's breasts]]]].
* BoomStick - Kaworu accidentally blows up a chunk of the city when he stabs the Lance of Longinus into Shamshel. The Angel is completely vaporized by whatever the Lance did to it.
* BreadEggsMilkSquick - Kaworu's musings about a sleeping Rei.
-->Almost like that fairy tale he once heard as a kid: the one about the Sleeping Beauty, the brave resistance fighter and the [[StateSec Civil Protection officers]] keeping her [[IHaveYouNowMyPretty locked up]] [[DudeShesLikeInAComa and sedated]] in their guard post. Although he had his suspicion that it wasn't the original format of the story...
* [[spoiler:BungledSuicide]] - [[spoiler:Rei tries to kill herself when she realizes Kaworu is a better pilot than her, only to be foiled by him. She ''does'' jump off the building they're on but he falls after her, grabs her and teleports the two of them across the street into a thrashcan to cushion their landing.]]
* BuxomIsBetter - Asuka is highly envious of girls with larger busts: both Mari and Rei.
* CapturedSuperEntity - [[spoiler:the AEL have the Nihilanth's corpse stashed away in Terminal Dogma]]
* CasualInterstellarTravel - ''sharply'' averted. Waygates have a [[MagicAIsMagicA maximum speed]] of 99.187856''c'', requiring weeks to get anywhere.
* TheChessmaster - the G-Man is evidently up to something: he's constantly watching Kaworu and it's revealed that [[spoiler:he sent the winged Eva against Israfel]]
* ChristianityIsCatholic - pointedly averted. Early on, Yui mentions Rei being a Christian but when Asuka asks her which denomination, Rei gives an unexpected answer: [[spoiler:she's not part of any denomination because she wasn't baptized, therefore none would accept her]].
* CrapsackWorld - let's see... we have a WorldHalfEmpty ravaged in the past by two Type 1 alien invasions and ravaged now by the occasional NegativeSpaceWedgie, all of it run by a PoliceState that [[WithUsOrAgainstUs violently cracks down on anyone not sharing their views]], as well as ''yet another'' Type 1 AlienInvasion that will definitely happen sometime in the future.
* CurbstompBattle - [[spoiler:Rei vs. Sachiel]], in the latter's favor.
** Also [[spoiler:the winged Evangelion killing all of Israfel's familiars with a single attack, cutting off the Angel's wings then finishing up with a NonLethalKO on Israfel]].
* DangerouslyGenreSavvy - most of the Angels. Just a few examples:
** Sahaquiel: [[spoiler:when Kaworu blinded her, she started wildly flailing around with her plasmawhips to keep him out of knife range]].
** Ramiel: [[spoiler:since it couldn't shoot and use an AT-field at the same time, it launched several attack drones to do offense while he shifted to defense]]. Justified in that it was being remote-controlled by Bardiel.
** Gaghiel: [[spoiler:you're an aquatic creature and is fighting against a flying opponent who can simply go higher if you try to catch her? No problem, you've got a BreathWeapon for that]].
** Israfel: [[spoiler:although he can split in two, he brought a [[ZergRush few thousand]] StarfishAlien {{familiar}}s with him as CannonFodder]].
* DeathFromAbove - [[spoiler:Asuka's debut battle against Gaghiel plays out with the Angel swimming and the Eva ''flying'']].
* DescriptionPorn - the [[MetaMecha Type-F Broadside Assault System]] gets one when it first goes into battle.
** The rewritten version of chapter 6 gets a long-winded description about the Durandal's [[TechnologyPorn nuclear fusion power supply]], [[KineticWeaponsAreJustBetter weaponry]] and operational doctrine, [[CoolStarship amongst]] [[MoreDakka other things]].
* DeusExMachina - sort of. [[spoiler:Kaworu has no weapons to attack Shamshel with and the Angel's whips are preventing him from getting close enough for an unarmed attack. His Eva is damaged and about to run out of power. And then the [[BladeOnAStick Lance of Longinus]] erupts from the ground right next to him...]] Subverted for reasons revealed much later.
** The G-Man seemingly pulls one during the Israfel battle: [[spoiler:if his conversation with Haruka is of any indication, he was the one who sent in the unknown Eva to help the heroes]].
* DisasterDemocracy - how the Confederacy of Man started off [[spoiler:before being covertly overtaken by SEELE]]
* DoorStopper - on the way to becoming one. The story is already over 150,000 words and according to WordOfGod, we're only about ''one-third'' into the plot.
* EarthThatUsedToBeBetter - population is barely half of what it was before Second Impact, the ecosystem is in shambles due to the introduction of several invasive alien predators, the surface is being ravaged by {{Negative Space Wedgie}}s... as usual for something set in the source universes.
* EstablishingCharacterMoment
** In the first five chapters, Kaworu looked like a typical teenage robot pilot. Then comes chapter 6 and Sachiel finds out the hard way [[ThisIsUnforgivable just]] [[BerserkButton how]] [[NoHoldsBarredBeatdown deep]] Kaworu's resentment of those who misuse their power runs.
** Rei's moment came in chapter 17 when [[spoiler:she attempts to commit suicide, proving that underneath the hard exterior is an emotionally fragile person]].
* ExplosiveOverclocking - the F-type equipment's railguns have an adjustable power level. Repeatedly firing it on maximum output is mentioned as not really healthy for the machine's superstructure.
* {{Expy}}: Shephard, of [[Series/StargateSG1 Jack O'Neill]].
* FasterThanLightTravel - the Waygate system, created from a combination of human displacement and Combine tunneling entanglement technologies.
* FictionalDocument - the first chapter begins with a short quotation from a ''Codex Longini'', dated to [[AlternateCalendar 329.AE]].
* FireForgedFriends - Asuka and Kaworu after the second battle with Israfel.
* FixedForwardFacingWeapon - in chapter 6, a frigate fires a spinal-mounted coilgun at Sachiel... [[WorfBarrage to no effect]].
* FlawedPrototype - Unit-00 still has this distinction. The only reason it can keep up with the newer models is because the pilot is [[AcePilot just that good]].
** The latest chapter has [[spoiler:Yui showing Shephard the local equivalent of the Evangelion graveyard: a large chamber with the failed Eva prototypes hanging from the walls in body bags, some of them [[BodyHorror visibly deformed]]. Four of Unit-00's direct predecessors are also mentioned as still alive, although being too malformed to be useful as Evangelions. Three of them were turned into {{Wetware CPU}}s while the fourth one is [[AndIMustScream stored in indefinite cryostasis despite having a fully functional AI]].]]
* {{Flight}} - Evas with A-type equipment are capable of flying around at aircraft dogfighting speeds.
* FourPhilosophyEnsemble - Kaworu is the Optimist, Shephard is the Realist, Yui is the Cynic. Rei is somewhere between the Cynic and the Apathetic.
* [[FrickinLaserBeams Frickin' Particle Beams]]: upon realizing conventional bullets don't have enough kinetic force to penetrate AT-fields, the AEL quickly equips their Evangelions with handheld Tau cannons. These ones ''do'' work... but not much better.
* FullFrontalAssault - [[spoiler:the famous Rei-exiting-shower-to-find-someone scene is repeated with a twist: Kaworu is on the receiving end and Rei attacks him with a sword]]
* FuumaShuriken - Rei has a collapsible one.
* GatlingGood - the Rheinmetall [=MK225=] triple-barreled rotary autocannon, carried by Durandals; has a 20mm caliber and is designed to pierce synth armor. Kaworu pulls out an [[{{BFG}} Eva-sized version]] against Shamshel but [[BeehiveBarrier as expected]], [[ImmuneToBullets it doesn't do squat]].
* GratuitousJapanese - prior to the rewrite, the first season had plenty of this.
* HandCannon - Rei has ''two''. [[RevolversAreJustBetter Revolvers]], of course.
* HaveYouSeenMyGod - invoked by Shephard and Yui: if there is a God, why didn't he prevent Second Impact?
* [[HoistByHisOwnPetard Hoist By Her Own Petard]] - [[spoiler:Shamshel, who took a headshot from ''her own EyeBeam'']]
* HomeworldEvacuation - invoked. Millions of humans were relocated to self-sustaining colonies in other star systems so that another Combine attack cannot find and kill them ''all''.
* HumongousMecha - earlier battleframe models. They're confirmed to be nothing more than [[GlassCannon assault guns]] on legs, as armoring them enough for front-line combat would be [[AwesomeButImpractical impractically expensive and heavy, not to mention slow]].
** MetaMecha - F-type equipment, a powered armor ''for Evangelions''
** MiniMecha - the Mk-III/B Durandal, designed for urban combat. A FragileSpeedster in that it can shrug off small arms fire... but not much else, preferring to avoid being hit in the first place instead.
* ImportedAlienPhlebotinum - lots of Combine technology was abandoned when Overwatch fled the planet. Humanity put all that to good use...
* InsistentTerminology - whenever someone speaks Japanese, the author uses ''tenshi'' instead of the canon ''shito'' to refer to the Angels on purpose.
* JackBauerInterrogationTechnique - [[spoiler:Asuka and Kaworu attempt this to Israfel]].
* KineticWeaponsAreJustBetter - the Confederate Armed Forces embrace this philosophy fully
* KungFuSonicBoom - the result of two AT-fields colliding, powerful enough to knock down a HumongousMecha weighing several thousand tons from ''kilometers away'':
* LampshadeHanging - frequently delievered from various sources.
** Asuka delivers a ''devastating'' TheReasonYouSuckSpeech at Kaworu, using his LeeroyJenkins piloting behavior as material. He promptly goes into a HeroicBSOD.
* LaserBlade - [[spoiler:the winged Evangelion uses one against Israfel, to devastating effect]]
* LighterAndSofter - while the VideoGame/HalfLife universe is even more of a CrapsackWorld than the Evaverse, Kaworu doesn't have the same emotional baggage canon!Shinji does
* TheLittleDetecto - gravimetric sensors. They detect the minuscule spacetime distortions caused by the presence of mass and therefore cannot be confused by stealth. Lots of tightly-packed objects however WILL make them ineffective, hence the need for radars. AT-fields and dark energy are instantly spotted from a VERY long distance due to their spacetime warping properties.
* MagneticHero - Kaworu uses almost the entire arsenal of said trope.
** Type 2: [[spoiler:Asuka doesn't really like him but fights alongside him anyway because she doesn't have a choice in the matter]].
** Type 4: [[spoiler:Rei becomes interested in him after he foils her suicide attempt]].
** Type 5: [[spoiler:most of his vigilant group follow him because they sympathize with his ideals]].
* MagneticWeapons - several. Basically, if there's a large single-shot cannon that's not mounted into a multi-barreled configuration, chances are it's a railgun. Ships have spinal-mounted versions while in Chapter 26, Rei uses an oversized Rheinmetall 250mm [=SrK=] L/75 ''Donnerlanze'' [[RuleOfCool bolt-action]] sniper railgun (with some GunPorn).
* MechaExpansionPack - the Evas have several. The ones seen so far:
** A-type equipment: JetPack for atmospheric {{Flight}}
** B-type equipment: for high-mobility ground combat
** C-type equipment: LuckilyMyShieldWillProtectMe, the MightyGlacier. And it's definitely not PointDefenseless.
** F-type equipment: PoweredArmor ''for Evangelions'', packing MoreDakka than what one can shake their fists at
** G-type equipment: advanced targeting sight and recoil absorber.
* TheMetricSystemIsHereToStay - The Confederacy uses the metric system. Shephard once uses US pints out of habit but an author's note includes the equivalent in litres.
* MinovskyPhysics - xenium, AKA the crystals from Xen in Half-Life.
** It is a Period 8 transuranic element that cannot fit onto the periodic table of elements due to being exotic matter.
** There are four known isotopes, all of them solid at room temperature. The base isotope is a yellow crystalline material used in various utilities. The second isotope and the only other one occurring naturally is a light blue fluorescent crystal. The third is a chemically inert violet crystal. The fourth is the only one to have received its own name (xenite) and is being researched as a possible power source.
** It reacts ''violently'' to being bombarded with high-energy particles by releasing [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gravitational_wave gravitational waves]]. Only a few kilograms of the material can generate waves powerful enough to damage steel and concrete structures and open microfractures in the fabric of space-time.
** It has an atomic mass of over 300 but due to the adverse reaction to mass spectrometers, its exact mass and atomic number cannot be determined.
** Waygates generate wormholes by using specially prepared crystals of the first isotope that contain artificial impurities of certain superconductors. These are capable of near-instantaneous wormhole generation across interstellar distances when electrically charged.
** The second isotope can destabilize interdimensional portals to the point of implosion.
* MohsScaleOfScienceFictionHardness - 4. Basically, everything is either an extrapolation of already-existing real-life technology or was [[ImportedAlienPhlebotinum copied]] from Combine technology.
** There are however a few that stretch belief. Especially gravimetric sensors, Waygates and of course the Evangelions themselves.
* MookHorrorShow - Rei exterminates the entire crew of a truck convoy to get their cargo, taking advantage of the night and the thick fog to play DeadlyGuest with them.
* MoreDakk - F-type equipment is focused on heavy fire support with no less than '''''48''''' barrels of autocannon, missile and railgun pointed at the target. When Rei opens up with it against [[spoiler:Israfel's familiars]], the results are [[LudicrousGibs quite spectacular]].
* MotionCaptureMecha - at least Unit-00 has a ''GurrenLagann''-esque control system to ease upper body movement at lower sync ratios.
* MysteriousWatcher - the G-Man, as usual.
* NextGenFic - of Half-Life. Chapter 8 reveals that [[spoiler:Barney is the Confederate army's Commander-in-Chief]].
* NiceJobBreakingItHero - the US government nuking Black Mesa is what started Second Impact this time around.
* NighInvulnerable - [[spoiler:the Lance of Longinus]].
* NotOfThisEarth - [[spoiler:Ditto.]] Yui outright confirms it.
* ObligatorySwearing - ''averted'' in an attempt to stay realistic. Touji is the only person who [[ClusterFBomb swears a lot]] (much to Hikari's annoyance) with Kaworu adding a PrecisionFStrike ([[BilingualBonus in German]]) here and there. Yui in particular is quick to reprimand the swearer.
* OffscreenTeleportation - the G-Man simply ''loves'' doing this, casually walking out from behind objects too small to hide behind or [[NoIAmBehindYou even the person he's talking to]].
* OhCrap - [[spoiler:Asuka's reaction when she realizes that Kaworu is her new landlord]]
* OmniscientCouncilOfVagueness - SEELE, as usual.
** The Angels, as well.
* {{Oneesama}} - Rei's attitude towards Lilith
* OperationBlank - Shephard names the plan to take down Ramiel Operation Nightfall. [[TitleDrop Which is also the name of the season finale said plan happens in.]]
* OrganizationWithUnlimitedFunding - ''averted''. The AEL had to become a PMC to avoid getting bankrupt after Kaworu racked up such an impressive collateral damage against Shamshel.
* PaperFanOfDoom - Hikari has one and relentlessly whacks Touji with it, much to the amusement of the class.
* PeoplesRepublicOfTyranny - heavily implied that the Confederacy of Man is actually this: authoritarian government plus a not-so-SecretPolice composed of {{Political Officer}}s.
* PortalNetwork - the Waygate network, linking an unspecified[[note]]at least five[[/note]] number of systems together. It's pretty slow (less than a parsec per day) and can't operate in gravity wells, an issue the Sol gate dodges by being anchored inside the Earth-Moon [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lagrangian_point#L1 L1 Lagrangian point]]).
* PoweredArmor - F-type equipment is one ''for Evangelions''.
* PowerGivesYouWings: [[spoiler:the white Evangelion that shows up against Israfel has a pair of blue energy wings, confirmed in the next chapter to be technological in origin]]
* PresidentEvil - Keel is implied to be one.
* RedOniBlueOni - aside from the usual Asuka-Rei dynamic, several new ones were introduced.
** Kaworu is the impulsive and hotheaded Red to Rei's cool and rational Blue
** Kaworu is the UnskilledButStrong IdiotHero to Asuka's WeakButSkilled AcePilot
** Shephard is the emotional and [[AFatherToHisMen forgiving]] Red to Yui's professional and goal-oriented Blue
** Mari is the extroverted and [[BiTheWay sexually liberal]] Red to Hikari's rule-abiding "good girl" Blue
* TheReveal
** Chapter 8: [[spoiler:Breen was a member of SEELE and was using the Combine to expedite Instrumentality]]. Obviously, it didn't work out.
** Same: [[spoiler:the AEL already had Kaworu's genetic records and Yui knows who he is. The rewritten version of the chapter confirms that Kaworu's DNA is NotQuiteHuman]].
** Chapter 18: [[spoiler:the Lance of Longinus was the Borealis' cargo]].
** Chapter 20: [[spoiler:Kaworu and Rei has a mutual past but neither remembers the other]].
** Chapter 26: [[spoiler:Kaworu and Rei are genetic siblings]].
** Season 2 chapter 11: [[spoiler:the Source the Evangelions are based on is the [[EldritchAbomination Nihilanth]]]].
* RollerbladeGood - Unit-00 and the Durandals are users of this trope, CodeGeass-style
* SchmuckBait - ''Subverted.'' Yui tells Kaworu where Unit-01's self-destruct switch is located and upon insisting that [[DontTouchItYouIdiot he is not to touch it]], Kaworu asks back [[FridgeLogic why is she even telling him where it is if she doesn't want him to touch it?]] [[GenreSavvy Her answer is so that he doesn't]] [[WhatDoesThisButtonDo find and activate it without knowing what it does]].
* ScrewTheRulesImDoingWhatsRight - Kaworu's philosophy in life, or so he says
* SecretIdentity - Kaworu made sure no one outside the AEL except four people knows what he's doing for a living. ''Especially'' not Asuka.
* ShownTheirWork - the author apparently likes to flaunt the effort laid into worldbuilding.
* [[spoiler:SiblingTeam]] - Kaworu and Rei in the second season.
* SpaceFighter - the SF-144 ''Nova'' sixth-generation space superiority fighter. Can't leave the atmosphere on its own but is confirmed to be carrier-based and capable of surviving atmospheric reentry. Kensuke gleefully lists off its capabilities when he sees one in the second season, [[PowerAtAPrice including the lack of stealth capabilities]].
** A squad of them appears in the second season, [[spoiler:chasing the unknown Eva]] with what are basically additional engines tacked onto them. Does the latter part [[SuperDimensionFortressMacross sound familiar]]?
* SquareCubeLaw - Lilith invokes it by name in her explanation about how Sachiel [[EldritchAbomination cannot be of natural origin and in fact shouldn't even exist]].
* StandardSciFiHistory - the story currently appears to be at Stage 5; specifically, the "Empire at its Height" substage. The only main deviations are Stage 2 (the Seven Hour War) occurring before Stage 1, with [[FirstContact Stage 4]] [[AlienInvasion taking place at the same time]].
* SwissArmyWeapon - the local equivalent of the canon pallet rifle, appearing in the second season. [[spoiler:It has a [[FrickinLaserBeams rapid-firing particle cannon]], an underslung [[{{BFG}} dark plasma blast cannon]] and the whole thing is crowned with a [[ChainsawGood chainsaw bayonet]]]].
* TechnicianVersusPerformer - A strange three-way dynamic is present between the pilots.
** Kaworu is a Performer, going through battles with just basic knowledge and a heaping help of improvisation; this is ultimately why he becomes the MeatShield for the girls.
** Asuka is a Technician, becoming a pilot with lots of prior training and knowledge. Her aptitude for mobility warfare and exploiting enemy weaknesses is reflected by her tactical use of {{flight}} and ranged weaponry to flank the opponent while Kaworu keeps it distracted.
** Rei's status depends on who she's being compared to. She's the Technician to Kaworu's Performer, having far more skill and expertise; at the same time however, she's also the Performer to Asuka's Technician as Rei does far more flashy stunts which she backs up with ImprobableAimingSkills.
* TheQuietOne - post-rewrite [[spoiler:Tabris]].
* ThereIsNoKillLikeOverkill - in ''The present'', [[spoiler:Rei headshots a thug with over a dozen bullets]].
* UniversalUniverseTime - averted. Upon arriving from another system via FTL, the ''CSS Odessa'' is asked to synchronize their chronometers by local flight control. Also, Shephard specifically tells Asuka to set her clocks to a 24-hour day.
* VigilanteExecution - Kaworu's first Eva battle ends with him giving a NoHoldsBarredBeatdown to Sachiel, ''deliberately terrorizing the Angel'' by [[AndThisIsFor calling out the Angel on the death and destruction it caused between punches]] and repeatedly asking it how it feels to be on the receiving end before killing it.
* VigilanteMan - [[spoiler:Kaworu was expelled from his previous school because he helped a younger boy being bullied by the principal's son. Helped as in, put the bully in hospital.]] And he's about to continue right where he left off by [[spoiler:rallying a group of schoolmates to do the same]].
* VirtualSoundtrack - mainly for the fight sequences. The author also compiled a list of opening/ending themes, one pair for each season and an additional ending for each SeasonFinale.
* WaifFu - ''The Present'' has Rei taking out two armed thugs without breaking a sweat.
* WaveMotionGun - the [[spoiler:Tau cannon]] they borrow for taking down Ramiel [[spoiler:blasts through the Angel and two hills before flying off into space and ''hitting a satellite on the horizon'']]. Furthermore, the F-type equipment's railguns are confirmed to be capable of hitting stratospheric targets when turned to sufficiently high power (see ExplosiveOverclocking above).
* WeHaveBeenResearchingPhlebotinumForYears - how Kaworu gets introduced to the Evangelions.
* WeWait - SEELE's up to no good, as usual.
** Averted in chapter 14: [[spoiler:Shamshel is dispatched to find out where the hell did Sachiel go]]. Then played straight when the Angels probe the Evangelions' capabilities from different directions instead of charging in.
* WorldOfBadass - Kaworu's principle in life is striving to create this
* ZergRush - [[spoiler:the military tries this against Sachiel, doesn't really work]]
** In the second season, Kaworu challenges Israfel to single combat. [[spoiler:The Angel recognizes that it's outnumbered and responds by summoning a whole army of insectoid StarfishAliens.]]

Similarly to SCE, ''The Evangelion Odyssey'' is a crossover between Evangelion and VideoGame/Battlezone, with Battlezone acting as the prequel. This story falls much closer to canon, even though there are some radical changes as well: the Evas are now PoweredArmor instead of HumongousMecha, [[RuleSixtyThree Shinji and Asuka are of opposite genders than in canon]], Shinji is a snarking {{Tomboy}} and Rei is acknowledged to be [[spoiler:not quite human]].

!!The Evangelion Odyssey has examples of:

* AppliedPhlebotinum: biometal. Aside from its stated canon capabilities, biometal armor also functions as a full-body solar panel that continuously recharges the Eva's internal batteries while in direct sunlight.
* BerserkButton: to Shinji, Asuka perving on her. To Rei, [[HatesBeingTouched physical contact]].
* {{BFG}}: Shinji kills Ramiel with one. Even with
* DropTheHammer: in the opening battle, Unit-00 gives Sachiel a faceful of [[{{TabletopGame/Warhammer40000}} thunderhammer]].
* HoverTank: as per Battlezone, even though mounting hoverdrives on a military vehicle is illegal by international treaty. Misato has one in car form.
* LoopholeAbuse: as Shinji points out, the school rules only specify that the students must wear school uniforms, NOT that said school uniform must be the gender-appropriate one. Thus, [[WholesomeCrossdresser she can get away with]] [[OneOfTheBoys wearing a boys' uniform]].
* NitroBoost / SprintMeter : the Evas' internal batteries operate like this while the Eva is externally powered, especially while the Eva in question is using [[InvisibilityCloak Phantom VIR]].
* NotWhatItLooksLike: upon moving in, Asuka attempts to evict Shinji out of her room like in canon. This time however, Asuka didn't even know Shinji lives with Misato and Shinji walks in just as Asuka is holding one of her panties, wondering how it got there. [[{{Tsundere}} Needless to say]], she's NOT amused.
* PintsizedPowerhouse: the Evas. Instead of a walking StoneWall, the Evas are now {{Fragile Speedster}}s packing quite a bit of firepower.
* PoweredArmor / MiniMecha: the Evas, made out of biometal.
* ShortRangeShotgun: Unit-02's Pummel Gun, mounted.
* TheArk: '''Tokyo-3''', a giant, mobile city floating on the ocean.
* TheReasonYouSuckSpeech: Shinji gives one to Gendo. [[TheStoic Not that he's especially affected by it.]]
* WouldntHitAGirl: Toji doesn't punch Shinji this time specifically because she's a girl. When Rei badmouths his sister as having deserved her injury, he loses his shit and attacks her, resulting in Rei promptly handing his ass to him.
