** As for Seiya/Usagi itself, there simply is no concensus on which version of Seiya makes for a better "boyfriend" (quotes intentional) for Usagi. The girls prefer Seiya as the anime version's GenderBender incarnation, and are revulsed just by the thought of Seiya being female. The guys who like this ship mostly prefer Seiya to be a crossdressing female, because of 1) parallels with how Usagi saw Haruka and Michiru's relationship, so she has ''her own'' handsome girlfriend 2)because it's lesbian, and [[GirlOnGirlIsHot guys find lesbians sexy]].

*** It's not exactly helped by the fact, that Seiya continually insults Mamoru and even goes out of their way to imply Mamoru is deliberately ignoring Usagi and that he no longer loves her, allows rumors to be spread that they and Usagi are dating and when Usagi tells them to stop the rumors they try to make her into the bad guy by asking why she's breaking up with them when they were never dating in the first place, and even goes as far as peer pressuring Usagi into a softball game held by the school bully and president of their fan club to prove her "affections" for them when she has already told them numerous times that she already has a boyfriend she loves.

* [[TheOjou Rei]] [[{{Miko}} Hino]] was demonized quite a bit by rabid Usagi/Mamoru fans for her crush on Mamoru. They painted her as a screaming, frothing home-wrecker who wanted to kill Usagi and steal Mamoru all for herself. (The English dub making Raye a flat-out bully towards Serena didn't help matters.) * Even minor characters are not immune to this. Reika in particular is not popular among shippers just because she's Motoki's girlfriend. A lot of fans prefer to pair Motoki with one of the Senshi, some of whom have crushes on him. Said fans were probably thrilled that Reika got AdaptedOut of ''Series/PrettyGuardianSailorMoon'' and that Motoki and Makoto became a couple in that series.

*** It's not also helped by Mamarou (like Rei) isn't exactly nice to Usagi either. He belittled and teased her (and he's older in this version so that doesn't help). And the way Usagi and Mamarou got together in the 90s anime when they just remember their past lives and forgot all their fights (yeah, even if it's not a hatefic, this is normally called out or fixed). Rei (even in the 90s dub) atleast got a little more Friendship Upgrade with Usagi. So of course, when they see Seiya (the much more nicer) alternative to Mamarou, people who wants what seems to be the more healthier option (as well as people who can't live it down).

* Speaking of the Dark Kingdom Generals, Queen Beryl used to come under a ''lot'' of fire from Kunzite/Zoisite shippers. The fact that she killed Zoisite for his disobedience obviously meant she had some sort of vendetta against the relationship on the whole, and some fanfics would even cast her as TheVamp bent on seducing Kunzite and breaking up him and Zoisite. Granted, Zoisite's [[GreenEyedMonster extreme jealousy]] makes ''him'' mentally casting her in such a role slightly plausible, but still.

* Mamoru Chiba/Tuxedo Kamen/Prince Endymion of ''Franchise/SailorMoon'' is ''definitely'' up to his neck in this trope. The guy is consistently portrayed throughout every incarnation of the Sailor Moon franchise as [[OfficialCouple Usagi's love interest]], but TheNineties final [[Anime/SailorMoon anime]] series, ''Sailor Stars'', introduced Seiya Kou as a surrogate love interest while Mamoru was absent and fans, seeing a het-ish alternative to Mamoru ("ish" because Seiya is a GenderBender in the anime and a SweetPollyOliver in the [[Manga/SailorMoon manga]]), proceeded to take this opportunity to express their anger at Mamoru. Said anger stems mostly from a plot arc in the ''R'' season, where Mamoru [[ItsNotYouItsMyEnemies broke up with Usagi]] after receiving disturbing dreams that their relationship would lead to TheEndOfTheWorldAsWeKnowIt. It really didn't help that the whole arc reeked of IdiotPlot in general and the entire situation came off as very contrived and [[{{Narm}} melodramatic]], not to mention being incredibly dragged out. It also didn't do any favors for Mamoru's character either, as his repeated attempts to push Usagi away came across as [[{{Jerkass}} mean]], even though he did have good intentions. But what people tend to forget though is that after that issue was finally resolved, Usagi ''did'' forgive Mamoru and he generally went back to being a serious and overall devoted and well-meaning boyfriend. But NeverLiveItDown is in full effect here, as some Seiya/Usagi shippers will practically [[RonTheDeathEater bend over backwards]] to color Mamoru up as this heartless asshole who ''hates'' her.

* Another minor character who sometimes gets this is Umino, who was a SecondLove for Naru after Nephrite died. On review, this is all more Ship To Ship Combat than Die For Our Ship, since I haven't observed much if any vitriol specifically aimed at any of the characters involved so much as at the ships and shippers. Relocated to appropriate trope.

* The fandom has a long and complex history of warfare over the very possibility of pairing Sailors Mercury, Mars, Jupiter, and Venus with the Four Generals of the Dark Kingdom:
** The concept was originally teased by [[http://www.soul-hunter.com/sailormoon/galleryartbooks/1/022.jpg an image]] drawn by Naoko Takeuchi for one of the artbooks; her note on the piece indicated that she'd been interested in writing about the two groups being romantically linked in their past lives, but ended up mostly not having room to work it into the story proper aside from a couple of glancing references to a relationship between Sailor Venus and Kunzite. Many fans seized on the possibility with great enthusiasm, while many others rejected it completely, leading to ongoing feuds over whether or not there's any real basis for the pairings, the comparative superiority of Senshi/Shitennou pairings versus pairings of two senshi and/or the '90s anime's Kunzite/Zoisite and Nephrite/Naru romances, and whether or not Takeuchi's notes in the artbook are enough basis to consider the Senshi/Shitennou pairings canon.
** ''Theatre/SeraMyu'' and ''VideoGame/SailorMoonAnotherStory'' graduated the romances between the two foursomes to a certain amount of canon legitimacy, but the relative obscurity of those installments of the franchise and their disconnection from the main manga/anime storylines meant they added comparatively little fuel to the fire, serving mostly as fuel for the shippers' imaginations and bullet points in arguments over canon or non-canon status.
** Then came ''Anime/SailorMoonCrystal,'' which reworked the manga version of the Dark Kingdom arc to include explicit confirmation that the members of the two teams were in love with one another in their past lives. ''Crystal'' already being highly divisive within the fandom, the reveal caused a full-fledged meltdown and the infighting between Senshi/Shitennou shippers and anti-shippers went ''nuclear''. The shippers ecstatically celebrated the confirmation of their pet ships' canon status, the anti-shippers complained bitterly of things like heteronormativity and gay erasure, and both camps engaged in copious name-calling and insult-slinging at each other. Even the Four Generals getting unceremoniously killed off in Act 12 and essentially forgotten thereafter failed to quell the furor.
*** The Mars/Jadeite pairing is especially contentious, since Rei is popularly paired with [[LesYay Usagi or Minako]] or considered [[CelibateHero asexual and aromantic]] by many fans, and Jadeite is [[NeverLiveItDown primarily remembered for his sexist comments in the '90s anime adaptation]] (something which is not a part of his character in any other version). Fans of the Kunzite/Zoisite pairing (thus far also exclusive to the '90s anime) are also particularly bitter about the Senshi/Shitennou romances, and have received equally bitter backlash from Venus/Kunzite and Mercury/Zoisite shippers in turn.

Rewritten to be more comprehensive and reflect that Crystal's Dark Kingdom adaptation has been complete for some time.

* With the advent of ''Anime/SailorMoonCrystal'', the Dark Kingdom generals are coming under fire for the very ''possibility'' of being paired with or having been paired with the Senshi in the past. Never mind that it's only been five episodes so far and that aside from a few alterations, Crystal will follow the manga pretty much to the letter. [[spoiler: Which means the generals are slated to die anyway so why should it matter?]]
** Not to mention that [[WordOfGod Takeuchi Naoko herself]] stated that there was no room for love stories with the Senshi and Shitennou (though she had expressed a wish to write about the pairs) - ''except'' for hints thrown towards Venus and Kunzite in the manga itself and the Sailor V series, which indicates that Venus might have had a crush on him during the time of the Silver Millenium. As far as anything in canon goes, she had only drawn them all paired up for [[http://www.soul-hunter.com/sailormoon/galleryartbooks/1/022.jpg one image]].
** As of Act 6, not only [[spoiler: Jadeite and Nephrite are still alive]] but [[spoiler: Nephrite has said that he feels a sort-of odd connection to Makoto/Sailor Jupiter]] - marking a MASSIVE difference from the manga. [[InternetBackdraft You can guess]] [[ShiptoShipcombat how "well"]] [[HetIsEw the fandom]] [[BrokenBase has taken this.]]|
** As of Act 10, which briefly focused on [[spoiler: the Past Senshi and the Four Generals's ''actual'' relationships in the Silver Millennium]] in a flashback sequence, the fandom has had what one can only call '''a collective, screaming, brain-melting FreakOut.''' [[http://fail-fandomanon.dreamwidth.org/111870.html?thread=565462270#cmt565462270 This one is just the tip of the iceberg]].
** And as of Act 12, [[spoiler: the Shitennou get killed off by Metallia right as they properly manage to remember their pasts and their romances with the Senshi. [[ForegoneConclusion Toldja]].]] That has '''''NOT''''' diminished the whining in the slightest, even [[spoiler: as the characters are essentially forgotten, save for a brief cameo in the Black Moon arc where they appear to give Mamoru encouragement.]]
** Jadeite in particular is catching a lot of shit from both the [[LesYay Rei/Minako]] or [[CelibateHero "aro ace Rei"]] camps; this is due to Jadeite becoming something of TheScrappy for his sexism in the first anime (that doesn't carry over to his other selves), Rei fans being wildly overprotective of their favorite character and the general HetIsEw sentiment.
** During the Dark Kingdom arc of ''Crystal'', a lot of Kunzite/Zoisite shippers were angry that their ship wasn't included and were ''extremely'' vocal about this displeasure, especially where Senshi/Shitennou was concerned. This has died down recently, and the tables have turned as a chunk of Sen/Shi shippers have become resentful of Kunzite/Zoisite and its fans, voicing feelings of persecution over their ships being disliked. Kunzite/Venus shippers can be especially negative about it.

artbooks; her note on the Shitennou get killed off by Metallia right as they properly manage to remember piece indicated that she'd been interested in writing about the two groups being romantically linked in their pasts past lives, but ended up mostly not having room to work it into the story proper aside from a couple of glancing references to a relationship between Sailor Venus and their romances Kunzite. Many fans seized on the possibility with the Senshi. [[ForegoneConclusion Toldja]].]] That has '''''NOT''''' diminished the whining in the slightest, even [[spoiler: as the characters are essentially forgotten, save for a brief cameo in the Black Moon arc where they appear great enthusiasm, while many others rejected it completely, leading to give Mamoru encouragement.]]
** Jadeite in particular is catching a lot of shit from both the [[LesYay Rei/Minako]] or [[CelibateHero "aro ace Rei"]] camps; this is due to Jadeite becoming something of TheScrappy for his sexism in the first anime (that doesn't carry
ongoing feuds over to his other selves), Rei fans being wildly overprotective of their favorite character and whether or not there's any real basis for the general HetIsEw sentiment.
* Speaking of
pairings, the Dark Kingdom Generals, Queen Beryl used to come under a ''lot'' comparative superiority of fire from Senshi/Shitennou pairings versus pairings of two senshi and/or the '90s anime's Kunzite/Zoisite shippers. The fact that she killed Zoisite for his disobedience obviously romance, and whether or not Takeuchi's notes in the artbook are enough basis to consider the Senshi/Shitennou pairings canon.
** ''Theatre/SeraMyu'' and ''VideoGame/SailorMoonAnotherStory'' graduated the romances between the two foursomes to a certain amount of canon legitimacy, but the relative obscurity of those installments of the franchise and their disconnection from the main manga/anime storylines
meant she had some sort of vendetta against they added comparatively little fuel to the relationship on fire, serving mostly as fuel for the whole, shippers' imaginations and some fanfics would even cast her as TheVamp bent on seducing Kunzite and breaking up him and Zoisite. Granted, Zoisite's [[GreenEyedMonster extreme jealousy]] makes ''him'' mentally casting her bullet points in such a role slightly plausible, but still.
arguments over canon or non-canon status.
** During Then came ''Anime/SailorMoonCrystal,'' which reworked the manga version of the Dark Kingdom arc to include explicit confirmation that the members of ''Crystal'', a lot of Kunzite/Zoisite shippers the two teams were angry that in love with one another in their ship wasn't included past lives. ''Crystal'' already being highly divisive within the fandom, the reveal caused a full-fledged meltdown and were ''extremely'' vocal about this displeasure, especially where the infighting between Senshi/Shitennou was concerned. This has died down recently, and the tables have turned as a chunk of Sen/Shi shippers have become resentful and anti-shippers went ''nuclear''.
Fans of the
Kunzite/Zoisite pairing (thus far also exclusive to the '90s anime) are also particularly bitter about the Senshi/Shitennou romances, and its fans, voicing feelings of persecution over their ships being disliked. Kunzite/Venus have received equally bitter backlash from Venus/Kunzite and Mercury/Zoisite shippers can be especially negative about it.in turn.

* Even minor characters are not immune to this.

* Another minor character who sometimes gets this is Umino, who was a SecondLove for Naru after Nephrite died. Viewers found the Naru/Nephrite storyline so sweet and memorable that more than a few shippers would rather find a way to bring Nephrite back and have him with Naru. It doesn't help that many fans find Umino [[TheFriendNobodyLikes as annoying as his friends do]]. The guy's lucky that Makoto/Nephrite is so popular and that Naru/Umino is an OfficialCouple, or he might not get shipped at all.

** Kunzite/Zoisite shippers as a whole are becoming an vicious bunch, shrieking anger at ''Crystal'' for any lack of interaction between the two and championing the pairing as oh-so-revolutionary and socially progressive. While a homosexual villain romance that was surprisingly functional and sweet is indeed a nice thing to see, the pairing alone didn't make the anime or even the entire franchise what it was. Since ''Crystal'' follows the manga, which had no romance between them as it existed solely as an invention of the 90's anime, it's exclusion is understandable, making the shippers vitriol extreme and unnecessary.
