* FaceOfAThug: A {{Downplayed}} example since he is decently handsome if you stop to consider it, and most people warm up to him pretty quickly. Nonetheless, he can be aggressive and outspoken, can sometimes make morbid comments without realizing it, has a memorable pair of ExhaustedEyeBags (see above), and his face has taken its fair share of blows over the years. The handful of eerie, unnerving expressions that he's given [[PlayedForLaughs for comedic effect]] doesn't help, of course. Contrasting this is a thoughtful, emotional, good-humored, sociable, and hard-working guy underneath it all.

* SadClown: Given that this is a comedy series, Grimaldo cracks plenty of jokes and can easily laugh off uncomfortable moments, but this is in direct contrast with his mostly ineffectual abilities, moody behavior, and lack of self-worth.

Added DiffLines:

* TurnTheOtherCheek: There are a number of occasions where Grimaldo is not respected or validated by those around him, which include how most of them shoot down his genuine concerns because they're bothered by his pessimistic personality. He's also [[TheScapegoat unfairly blamed for things that are far from his fault]]. Grimaldo is understandably irked and, in one instance, deeply hurt by these moments, but he moves past it more often than not and tries his best not to pay too much mind about how others see him.

* CynicIdealistDuo: Single-person example. At his core he believes that nothing in life is completely without meaning, is quick to believe any information passed off as true without reconsideration, and can be quite the enthusiastic dreamer. He is also a personable guy who has few qualms in simply approaching someone new and striking up conversation. On the flip side, he is pragmatic, sees the worst in every situation, and has gotten beaten down by the world enough times to temper all expectations.

* BewareTheNiceOnes: He's good-hearted, thoughtful, and is better than most at reining in his temper but he can be pretty harsh when his loved ones are even slightly wronged or pushed around. {{Subverted}} in two ways: one, he could care less about what others think of him; and two, his passionate defense of his loved ones sometimes loops back around to being "adorable", as Jeri puts it.

Perpetually falling short of being the best in any particular field, a victim to this, even despite his exhaustive efforts. Truth is, Grimaldo isn't an uber-competitive person, and yet has developed such an inferiority complex that he now perceives anything less than the top of the totem pole a failure. He is broken down and miserable due to those around him repeatedly achieving more success than he does.
** This trope additionally applies to his interpersonal relationships. His past romantic suitors primarily settled with him as a second option and, during one of his emotional episodes, he brings up that feels like he has never been someone's "best friend". This might partially explain why he does kind things for others without any bells and whistles, too.

* FailureHero: He is cursed with Despite regular attempts to do someone a perpetual losing streak as favor or accomplish some goal, he rarely succeeds constantly comes up short in most of almost everything he does and when he does succeed it's usually at a difficult cost. Made even more heartbreaking (or, to others, hilarious) by just how hard he pushes himself. This also perfectly explains his efforts.defeatist attitude.

!!This series provides examples of:

* {{Animesque}}: The visual aesthetic is heavily inspired by anime, right down to the expressive characters, the punchy, saturated color palette, and the [[EyeCatch bumpers before and after the commercial break]]. Fittingly, the show takes place in the early 2000s, when anime was first becoming popular in North America. The series creator notes Manga/AzumangaDaioh, Manga/{{Nichijou}}, the 80s anime of Literature/DirtyPair, and the works of Creator/RumikoTakahashi (Manga/UruseiYatsura, Manga/MaisonIkkoku, Manga/RanmaOneHalf), among others, as direct influences on the show's art style.
* AntiHumor: Vignettes can occasionally end with something completely [[DropTheCow out of left field]], or even [[NoEnding without a punchline at all]]. Both PlayedStraight and {{Subverted}} by a BrickJoke.
* ArtShift: Implemented for [[PlayedForLaughs comedic effect]].
* BrokeEpisode: [[RunningGag All. the. time.]] Jeri tries to balance college, past-time jobs, and life on a regular basis. The rest of the cast can't be considered much better considering they all live in a run-down and cramped apartment building.
* WorkInfoTitle: A fair majority of the show is characters lounging around and doing mundane things.

* ActivistFundamentalistAntics: He is a devout Catholic, and constantly feels that it his holy duty to force his religion onto the other tenants. This only leads to his words being turned against him. But because he's so determined, it is brought up again and again.
* AggressiveSubmissive: Grimaldo is a stubborn and industrious guy who can be very harsh when his buttons are pushed, but he also happens to be passive and submissive when other people take the initiative. It's also implied that he has some internalized masochistic tendencies, which leaves his friends worried that he'll end up in an abusive relationship.

One instance of the latter had the tenants playing in a competitive board game and, instead of even trying to beat the others, he helped support Jeri and Warble.

* BerserkButton: Calling him lazy can get him riled up, which makes sense considering how much of a hard worker he is. Pushing his buttons is not something that he blows out of proportion too often, though.

* TheCassandra: Because he's such a latent pessimist, most of his genuine predictions and concerns are brushed off. Despite this, time and time again it's shown that Grimaldo has at least a little bit of justification for all of his doom-and-gloom, since he's usually right on the money.
* CharacterDevelopment: In his earlier appearances he still embodies a lot of his same personality traits, but is noticeably more reserved. However, from season 2 forward, he can swing back and forth from being withdrawn and melancholy to impassioned and completely unafraid to say exactly what's on his mind. Series creator Gavin Nowak has stated that this back-and-forth makes Grimaldo very fun to write for as he will usually hold himself back for a while before opening up and going on a long-winded, vehement tirade.
* ChickMagnet: Despite being seen by the other tenants as a stuck-up pessimist, Grimaldo has had four girls swooning for him over the course of the show. [[CluelessChickMagnet He wasn't aware of two of them, however]], and only reciprocated the affections of one. On top of that, he once mentions that he had his first kiss when he was only 7 years old, had sex twice in high school and gets hit on by people of both sexes every now and then. Justified once you consider his [[ShirtlessScene athletic physique]] and (ahem)... [[CovertPervert knowledge]]. * CrisisOfFaith: Spends a majority of the series questioning what he believes in, and all the nuanced emotions and varying responses that come as a result.
* CulturallyReligious: PlayedWith. Grimaldo becomes this after many chapters of CharacterDevelopment. Although he was not raised religious in any way outside of [[EveryoneIsChristianAtChristmas attending Mass during the holidays]]. However, he would begin attending church more often in his teens following the birth of his younger brother Dante. Over the course of the series, Grimaldo begins having his own questions and doubts regarding his faith and is said to struggle between Evangelicalism or Catholicism, or maybe not even believing at all. By the end of the series, Grimaldo feels comfortable as an agnostic athiest, one who remains a believer a spirituality and open to doing some soul searching once he sorts things out with himself.

* TheCynic: Grimaldo rarely believes anything good is going to happen and usually comes to morbid conclusions. [[CharacterDevelopment He makes an effort to grow out of it]] around the half way point in the series, though his latent pessimism still remains an aspect of his character.

The catcher returns later in the story as none other than Guillermo Grimaldo. What's even more impressive, he plays a major role going forward.
* EndearinglyDorky: Grimaldo is usually a critical and gloomy person, but he still can get easily excited and be somewhat awkward and dorky.
