Who was still strong enough to scar his face after he trained under Karin? Well, he trained under the master of the Martial Arts Wolf School, who got killed by the master of the Snake School during a treacherous attack. He then was overpowered by one of the latter's minions and offered a chance to run away. He does so out of self-preservation but lives in shame for the rest of his life.
