* AbilityOverAppearance: Steven Moffat said at one point that he was getting sick of younger Doctors, and was planning to cast an actor who was at least middle-aged. In walks Matt, who was only in his mid-20's at the time, and the rest is history. (Note that Smith was indeed followed up by an older Doctor -- Peter Capaldi took over the role at 55, older than any other Doctor save John Hurt.) %% Capaldi as of Deep Breath was older than Hartnell as of An Unearthly Child.
* ActorAllusion: In the movie ''Film/ChristopherAndHisKind'', Matt Smith's character and his mother are having an argument about him returning to medical school. She asks him, "Don't you want to be a doctor?" It's a shame there is no behind-the-scenes outtakes on the DVD to see what Matt Smith's answer is.

* TheCastShowoff: Gets to show off his football skills in the episode [[Recap/DoctorWhoS31E11TheLodger "The Lodger"]].

* OneOfUs: Wrote ''Series/DoctorWho'' fanfic to get in touch with his character. (It involved the Doctor meeting [[UsefulNotes/AlbertEinstein Einstein]].) He also wanted to try and walk the floor at Comic-con to see what it was like from the other side. Naturally this was difficult, so how did he go about it? By [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mU0aD91nGKU cosplaying in a Bart Simpson mask.]]
* PromotedFanboy: Was an Isherwood fan before getting to play him in ''Christopher and His Kind''.
* ThrowItIn:
** That BigDamnKiss between the Doctor and companion Rory? Wasn't scripted.
** Steven Moffat revealed that CatchPhrase "Come along, Pond" was purely Matt's invention. Apparently, Matt started calling her that during their very first photo shoot together before filming even began. When he heard it, he merely started adding into the script.
* TrollingCreator: Working with Steven Moffat has had this effect. Initially, Matt swore that the fish fingers he ate with custard were actual fish fingers; it was later revealed they were actually coconut breaded cakes. Remember kids, Rule One: The Doctor Lies.
* WagTheDirector: A TropesAreNotBad example. Matt didn't feel happy in any of the outfits the ''Series/DoctorWho'' crew put him in, and eventually insisted on trying on a bow tie and suspenders. Creator/StevenMoffat objected that an outfit like that would be more of a ''Series/DoctorWho'' parody than anything else. As soon as Matt was in his chosen outfit, though, things fell into place and his Doctor's entire wardrobe was changed into the one we know and love about half a day before the deadline.
* WhatCouldHaveBeen: At this moment, people could have been watching him running around the streets of London chasing criminals as Dr. John Watson. He originally auditioned for Series/{{Sherlock}}, but was rejected for being "too barmy". Steven Moffat, who created the show, saw his performance and offered the role of the Eleventh Doctor to him.

* LargeHam: Gives an ode to overacting in the episode [[Recap/DoctorWhoS33E4ThePowerOfThree "The Power of Three"]], and it is ''glorious''. Turns it UpToEleven when playing the Cyber-Planner "Mr. Clever" persona in [[Recap/DoctorWhoS33E12NightmareInSilver "Nightmare in Silver"]].

However, "Matt Smith ([[MeaningfulName XI]])", as he's listed on Website/{{IMDb}}, was catapulted into the UK national consciousness on 3 January 2009, when the BBC announced that he would be playing the Eleventh Doctor in ''Series/DoctorWho''. Aged 26 when cast, he is the youngest person to ever play the role.

'''Matthew Robert Smith''' (born October 28, 1982) is a British actor, in UsefulNotes/TheMidlands (Northampton to be precise). He aimed to be a professional footballer, but a back injury put an end to that, and he went into acting instead.

* TheKlutz: Has the reputation. When it was announced that for the 2012 Olympics he'd be the torch bearer through Cardiff, fans posted, "Farewell, Cardiff. You will rebuild."

Steven Moffat even wrote a blog post once about Matt walking around with a guitar slung across his back; that was bad enough, but Karen Gillan apparently took it as a challenge to see how close she could get without being injured and followed right behind him, horrifying all who watched.

He got on the show by originally auditioning for the role of Doctor John Watson in Series/{{Sherlock}}, another show by Steven Moffat, but was rejected for being "too barmy". Steven Moffat then offered him the role as the Doctor.
