St. John was best known for his television roles, including his role as Neil Winters in the SoapOpera ''Series/TheYoungAndTheRestless''. He also portrayed a young Alex Haley in the television mini-series ''Series/{{Roots}}''.

St. John was married twice and had three children. His eldest son Julian died by suicide in 2014, which led to his depression and subsequent accidental death in 2019 of heart disease, which alcohol may have contributed. He was 52 years old.
