Originally independent with financial backing from Creator/ColumbiaPictures and Nelson Entertainment, Castle Rock was bought by [[UsefulNotes/TedTurner Turner Broadcasting]] (who also bought Creator/NewLineCinema around the same time) in 1993, and is now owned by Creator/WarnerMedia through Creator/WarnerBros as a result of the 1996 merger between Time Warner and Turner. Their films were distributed by Columbia until WB took over starting with ''Film/MickeyBlueEyes'', with the exception of ''Did You Hear About the Morgans?'', for which they reunited with Columbia. After a string of commercial failures, WB dropped the label after 2010's ''Flipped'', instead licensing the name out for other producers to use, mainly Rob Reiner himself. Eventually, Reiner and his wife Michelle relaunched the Castle Rock brand in 2020 for TV shows, followed a year later with a film division; WB remains a partner for both divisions through a first look deal.

Further, prior to WB taking over distribution, Castle Rock also had multiple deals with local companies for international distribution of their films, as well as local productions. Arguably the most famous partnership in this space was with the German studio Concorde, whose joint venture with Castle Rock, Concorde-Castle Rock/Turner, was the only studio willing to pick up Creator/MichaelHaneke's notorious ''Film/FunnyGames''.
