The series lasted for 100 issues, from February, 2001 to April, 2009. After ''Ultimatum'', the series was replaced with ''Ultimate X'', where mutants that survived the tragedy were scattered, hunted, and leaderless. This new series only lasted 5 issues, from April, 2010 to August, 2011. However, after ''The Death of Spider-Man'' the series was relaunched as Ultimate Comics: X-Men with the mutants starting to band together again after the events of Ultimate Origins revealed the secret origin of the mutant species. The new series was written by Nick Spencer (''ComicBook/MorningGlories''), dealing with the fallout of this origin being revealed to the public along with the events of the Ultimate Hawkeye series. After issue 13, Brian Wood (ComicBook/{{DMZ}}) took over writing duties on the title, until the series' cancellation.

Added DiffLines:

* TakeUpMySword: After the death of Xavier, it was Kitty of all people the one who would raise into the leader of all mutants, and the voice of reason that tries to keep things peaceful (or at least with just the minium violence possible) when others want toPayEvilUntoEvil to the humans.

Added DiffLines:

* DidntThinkThisThrough: Alex and Northstar head to free Lorna Dane from the Triskelion, so the X-Men sends two teams: one to try to stop the guys in their way, and another at the Triskelion in case they got away from the first team. It seems that nobody thought that the Ultimates themselves (who ''live'' there) would show up and take part in the fight.

Added DiffLines:

* BigBadWannabe: The supercomputer that used to run the Utopia base evolved into an Ultron-like robot, planning to create a new race of droids and become the dominant species on Earth, above both humans and mutants... and it was destroyed when Kitty Pryde phased through it, without even realizing what she was doing.

* CannotTellFictionFromReality: A small girl saw Gambit playing magic tricks in the street, and asked him for help: he needs him to "use magic" to make her just killed mother live again. When Gambit replied that he can't, that he does not know that kind of magic, the girl asks to locate some more powerful wizard. What about Dumbledore? or Harry Potter? Why don't go the England and ask them for help? (yes, she really asked those things, and not being sarcastic)
