* AcademyOfEvil: A school that teaches students to war on other dimensions.
* AxCrazy: A majority of the students here love pulling off [[NightmareFace disturbing facial expressions]] and screaming about how they're going to destroy their opponents.
* CharacterTic: People from this dimension tend to clasp their hands together when they Fusion Summon. People from other dimensions who have been around them sometimes pick up this tic, such as Yuzu and Sergey.
* ClockPunk: The soldiers use the Antique Gear archetype used by Cronos de Medici.
* ColorCodedCharacters:
** Many of them wear outfits that harken back to their alignment to Fusion. Leo, Yuri, and [[spoiler:Roget]] wear purple uniforms (the color of Fusion monsters), while Sora and Denis wear orange and blue outfits (the main colors of the artwork on Polyermization).
** Their elite soldiers Obelisk Force wear blue, while lower-ranked commanders wear yellow and the grunt soldiers wear red.
* CoolSword: The HardLight blades projected by their Duel Disks take the shape of swords.
* EnemyCivilWar: [[spoiler:Not all Fusion Duelists are from Academia, since Asuka is the first of Yusho's agents who is against their cause.]]
* ForTheEvulz: This group clearly gets off on destroying a dimension's way of life. They compare hunting down anyone from an alternate dimension to be a game.
* GreaterScopeVillain: They take this role in the Synchro Dimension arc, while the protagonists are dealing with the Synchro Dimension, they hang over the arc as the enemies the Lancers will have to fight.
* HumongousMecha: Antique Gear Chaos Giant, which destroyed Heartland. They have several of them.
* LackOfEmpathy: Most Duelists from Academia, particularly Yuri, Dennis and the Obelisk Force, enjoy what they do and have zero remorse for what their actions have wrought. Serena seems to be the one exception, clearly disgusted with what she heard from Yuzu and what she's seen from Sora's duel with Kurosaki. Other exceptions are Sora (who develops a sense of sympathy thanks to Yuya and Yuzu) and Barrett (who is an AffablyEvil NobleDemon at worst).
* MythologyGag: Antique Gear monsters and Obelisk Force for starters.
* WarForFunAndProfit: According to Sora. The way the Obelisk Force and Yuri are obviously enjoying the destruction they spread only cemented it.
* WouldHurtAChild: They're not too picky about their prey. [[spoiler:This means even ''infants'' are fair game.]]
* UtopiaJustifiesTheMeans: Academia members believe they are creating an utopia by fusing the four dimensions. To the point that some members don't even believe they've started a war.

Reiji's father, who three years ago went to the Fusion Dimension, where he became the Professor, the head of Academia. He is the instigator of the interdimensional war with the intent to conquer all dimensions and unite them under his command.

----
!!!Tropes associated with the Professor:
* AmbiguouslyBrown: His skin is noticeably darker than most characters. Other characters as well as his wife and son from Academia have lighter skin color.
* AmbitionIsEvil: When said ambition is starting a interdimensional war where the losers are [[AndIMustScream sealed in a card]], yes, it is evil.
* ArchnemesisDad: To Reiji, who is explicitly trying to find duelists strong enough to defeat the Professor.
* BadBoss: Played with. He seems to treat his subordinates well enough, or at least doesn't harm them, but most Academia members are terrified of him. It's not clear yet if he actually is a Bad Boss, or if their fear is just indoctrination due to being raised as ChildSoldiers.
* BadassCape: Showing his authority in Academia.
* BaldBlackLeaderGuy: A villainous one for Academia.
* BaldOfEvil: With TaintedVeins to boost.
* BigBad: He's the mastermind behind the interdimensional war and the one who started it by having the Fusion Dimension invade the Xyz Dimension.
* EvilPlan: His plan is to invade the other worlds to unite all of them. Though we don't know enough to tell if he is selfish or a WellIntentionedExtremist.
* EveryoneCallsHimBarkeep: The majority of characters call him just "[[GratuitousEnglish Professor]]", but it's likely that all of them know his name.
* EvilSoundsDeep: A deep, booming voice to add to his growing list of evil tropes.
* {{Expy}}:
** His relationship with his oldest son is blatantly one for Seto and Gozaburo's from the ''Duel Monsters''.
** His desire to fuse all worlds into one harkens to Yubel from ''GX''. The Professor even seems to have a similar method (capturing people to empower a machine vs. Yubel sacrificing duelists to complete Super Polymerization.)
** He acts as a CompositeCharacter for Chronos and Samejima from ''GX''. His basic uniform is heavily inspired by Chronos', and like Samejima he's the bald leader of Academia.
* FamilyThemeNaming: Leo, like Reiji and Reira, have the the kanji of zero (零) in their names.
* GrayEyes: Symbolizing his detached personality.
* MeaningfulName: The Kanji characters which make up his name mean "Zero King."
* ObviouslyEvil: Just look at the listed tropes.
* ParentalAbandonment: Episode 41 reveals he abandoned his family three years ago.
* ParentalNeglect: Reiji believes that the Professor wouldn't care if Reiji were kidnapped.
* PlayingCardMotifs: Like the rest of his family he's based on a suit. His is Spades, with his outfit's collar resembling one.
* SpellMyNameWithAnS: The problem is that his name is written in Kanji rather than Katakana. While it's pronounced "Leo," there's a few ways to romanize that into English.
* TheStoic: Just like his son. The greatest display of emotion so far is mild irritation at Barrett for not wanting him to send Yuri to the City.
* TaintedVeins: On his head.

!!!'''Voiced by:''' Creator/MieSonozaki (JP), Eileen Stevens (EN)
[[quoteright:226:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/fullsorashiunin_1607.png]]

A mysterious boy who decides to become Yuya's apprentice, joining You Show Duel School. He uses his looks to charm the pants off everyone he meets, and constantly seems to know more than he lets on. After Yuzu loses to Masumi, she ask him to teach Fusion Summoning, which he greatly accepts. He has been revealed as a member of the faction that destroyed Kurosaki's and Yuto's home, specifically a Duel Soldier from a school known as Academia, located in the Fusion Dimension. With his identity revealed, Sora returns to Academia and has become Yuya and the others' enemy. He returns later during the Synchro Dimension saga, replacing Dennis after his compromise with the Lancers, under orders to retrieve both Serena and Yuzu. However, Sora has other plans in mind...while protecting Yuzu to keep his promise with Yuya, Sora eventually realizes that he does not belong to Academia anymore and that Yuya and Yuzu are his only friends he can stay loyal to, becoming an ally to the Lancers.

He runs a Furnimal/[[DubNameChange Fluffal]] Deck, based on cutesy monsters fusing with a certain Edge Imp monsters to become horrifying mash-up creatures, the Deas-Toys/[[DubNameChange Frightfurs]].
----
!!!Tropes associated with Sora:
* AdorableAbomination: Mad Chimaera dancing with Bloom Prima makes it absolutely adorable.
* AnimeHair: Par for the course, closely resembling Lua's/[[DubNameChange Leo's]], but more blue than turquoise.
* AntiVillain: Unless he's facing Xyz Duelists from Resistance, Sora would rather eat candy and fool around with the heroes, whom he develops a genuine bond with. These traits mostly remain after his HeelFaceTurn, making him an AntiHero.
* ArchEnemy: Ever since his loss to Kurosaki, Sora considers him this. Nothing will deter him from trying to defeat him, ''nothing.'' He finally succeeds.
** However, though they hate each other, their animosity is rather impersonal and more about Xyz vs. Fusion as a whole. Compared to Dennis, the latter fits this role between Kurosaki far better.
** He's this to Tsukikage, since Sora turned his brother Hikage into a card. However, Sora is more accepting about this and is willing to let Tsukikage have his way with him as long as Yuya is saved first. Actually something of a subversion, since Sora is slowly becoming more good, and Tsukikage agreed to let it go for the time being to focus on the mission. He later drops this by saving Tsukikage from Obelisk Force.
* ArmorPiercingQuestion: Yuya calls Sora out on this when he asks Sora if he should abandon Serena to Academia in order to save Yuzu. Sora is shocked speechless as a result.
-->'''Yuya''': "Why do you want me to bring Serena?"
-->'''Sora''': "I want you to hand her over to me. In exchange, you can have Yuzu back. You can then return to the Standard Dimension with her!"
-->'''Yuya''': "Are you saying that I should abandon Serena!?"
-->'''Sora''': "That’s not what I meant! Didn't I tell you? She was a member of Academia to begin with. I’m just taking her back to her home!"
-->'''Yuya''': "You’re taking her back to the prison that is Academia!?"
* AwLookTheyReallyDoLoveEachOther: A platonic version, but after the reveal that he was TheMole, he's had moments that shows he still cares about his friends in Standard.
** He was very disturbed when he saw that Serena, his capture target, looked identical to Yuzu.
** In his rematch against Yuya, he noticeably doesn't pull any slasher smiles during the duel except when talking about the Academia's goals. Compared to his rematch with Kurosaki or his duel with Hikage, when it was on near constant. Showing he doesn't enjoy a duel to the death with Yuya.
** Episode 78 reveals that he saved Yuzu, while that may have been just his duty, he then rushed to Yuya to show that she was safe. Episode 80 shows that despite his orders, he really doesn't want to hand Yuzu willingly over to Academia and wants to keep her and Yuya safe.
* BadassAdorable: He beat up Sawatari and his friends in an instant. With a ''lollipop stick''. He also went ninja on us in Episodes 6, 15 and 34.
** Despite being injured from his duel with Kurosaki, Sora quickly knocks out two Security guards to chase after Yuto. Note that the Security guards are full grown adults while Sora is still ''just a kid.''
** He later defeats Kurosaki in their rematch.
** He manages to [[OneHitKill OTK]] a small legion of guards simultaneously with two monsters and a trap.
* TheBadGuyWins: After his allegiance is revealed, Sora defeats Kurosaki in his rematch, laughing and enjoying the man's suffering.
* BeastAndBeauty: Non-romantic metaphorical Beast to Yuzu's Beauty, lampshaded in the ballroom scene.
* BecauseYouWereNiceToMe: Episode 80 shows more of Sora's mindset: during his time in Standard, he came to regard Yuya and Yuzu as his ''first'' friends. This is due to the harsh training regime Academia put the kid through, which really left no time for relaxation and bonding between his fellow students. Plus since the majority of Academia are tortured into violent but obient sociopaths, hanging out with Yuya and Yuzu came as a source of huge relief to the boy and he grew to care for them despite his better judgment.
* BeingEvilSucks: He really does want to keep his friendship with Yuya and Yuzu, and struggling against Professor's orders are becoming increasingly difficult. He eventually decides to go against Academia to help his friends.
* BerserkButton: The idea of a Xyz duelist either being better or looking down on him is a major button. More specifically, thinking about Kurosaki and the way he humiliated him.
* BigDamnHeroes: He saves Yuzu and Crow's kids from Security. Counts as this due to being on the {{Face}} side at the time.
* BigBadFriend: After Sora's real identity is exposed and his friends call him out on his behavior, Sora tries, in a half-hearted manner, to justify his actions of sealing people away into cards and promoting Dimensional Wars between the Fusion Faction and ''everybody else''. Yuya and Yuzu are having none of it.
* BigBrotherMentor: An age-inverted example; he ends up teaching Yuzu about Fusion Summoning. Yuzu refers back to this relationship when explaining him to Frank, Tanner, and Amanda.
* BigDamnHeroes: His HeelFaceTurn is immediately followed by him saving Tsukikage from Obelisk Force.
* BigOlEyebrows: A minor example; his eyebrows aren't particularly big, just thicker than everyone else's pencil-thin brows.
* BitchInSheepsClothing: Due to being a ChildSoldier {{Sadist}}, though his Des-Toy Chain Sheep is a literal example.
* BrattyHalfPint: Yuya is the only one immune to Sora's cute face and the only one that sees him as the annoying kid he is during episodes 5 and 6. Later episodes have characters previously enamored with Sora's cuteness being clearly annoyed by his actions.
* BreakTheHaughty: As the duel with Kurosaki went on, this happened. And again against Yuto.
* BrutalHonesty: He points out that Yuya was the only reason that LDS didn't get the You Show Duel School.
* BullyingADragon: Does this to Kurosaki. At least Sora got to keep his soul. Subverted in that he later does beat him, showing they are more or less on equal footing.
* TheBusCameBack: After the Battle Royal arc, Sora more or less gets PutOnABus until about halfway through the Synchro arc.
* CharacterDevelopment: Thanks to Yuya and Yuzu he begins to move out of being a SociopathicSoldier and gains a sense of empathy.
* ChildSoldier: A lot of Sora's claims about his abilities and superiority to Xyz duelists, is eerily similar to the lies real child soldiers are told to get him to fight. Episode 36 confirms he is a Duel Soldier from the Fusion Dimension.
* CreepyGood: Post-HeelFaceTurn, his Frightfurs are still scary, but he is a good guy.
* CuteAndPsycho: He plays off his cuteness blatantly, and partakes in hunting Xyz Duelists and destroying Heartland City for fun.
* DanceBattler: His Trap Card Fusion Death Waltz literally invokes this. Mad Chimaera then dances with Bloom Prima to wipe out Security.
* DarkIsEvil: His Des-Toy monsters are all DARK Monsters..
* DarkIsNotEvil: Post-HeelFaceTurn.
* DeclarationOfProtection: [[spoiler:After seeing a rampaging Yuya, Sora declares that he will protect Serena before jumping on Crow's D-Wheel and bailing out Tsukikage from the Obelisk Force.]]
* DefectorFromDecadence: Sora ultimately leaves Academia for Yuya and Yuzu.
* DeliberatelyCuteChild: Sora plays his cuteness to the hilt, charming the pants off of Yuya's mother, friends, and teachers alike.
* {{Determinator}}: Once he sets his sights on something, Sora will ''not'' give up until he gets it. Kurosaki uses this to reason that Sora survived [[spoiler:being blown up during his message to Yuya]].
* DidntThinkThisThrough: Yuya points out the holes in Sora's plan to exchange Serena for Yuzu.
-->'''Sora''': "Don't you get it, Yuya!? There’s no other way to save Yuzu! If you keep hesitating, the Obelisk Force will arrive before you know it! And then, this city will become a battlefield!"
-->'''Yuya''': "Even if I bring Yuzu back, The Obelisk Force will still chase after her, won't they!? And then, '''our''' hometown will become a battlefield as well. My friends at You Show School will be in danger, too. There's no way I can allow that!"
-->'''Sora''': "That's why in order to prevent that, I’m going to bring Serena back, and persuade the Professor-"
-->'''Yuya''': "You know that he can't be persuaded, don’t you!?"
-->'''Sora''': "…"
* DishingOutDirt: Despite being fairies, the Furnimal monsters are all EARTH mosters.
* DontYouDarePityMe: He's incredibly insulted when Yuto passes up a chance to OneHitKill him because he didn't want to hurt him. He says he'll never forgive Yuto for looking down on him.
* DubNameChange: His last name is changed to Perse in the dub.
** Furnimal -> Fluffal
** Des-Toy -> Frightfur
* EldritchAbomination: His Des-Toy monsters, but Mad Chimaera takes the cake: [[NightmareFuel It is best described as the upper parts of various puppets and plushes attached to four anvils, with working tools jammed into their heads]].
* EvilAllAlong: Despite getting all buddy-buddy with the main cast he makes a sport out of hunting Xyz Duelists and partaking in interdimensional invasions.
* EvilCostumeSwitch: Downplayed; when he returns to the Standard Dimension, he is using the Academia's Duel Disk instead of the Standard Dimension one he previously used.
* EvilIsHammy: Oh boy. Sora takes ''several'' levels in ham after TheReveal, especially when he's performing Fusion Summons, and it's quite telling that he drops it around [[MoralityPet Yuya and Yuzu.]]
* EvilMentor: Since he was EvilAllAlong.
* ExtremeOmnivore: He adds chocolate fudge to a plate of ''sardines''. It grosses out [[IdiotHero Yuya]] of all people.
* {{Expy}}:
** A silly guy that befriends TheHero with cutesy monsters that turn into nightmarish creatures, and turns out to be EvilAllAlong and makes constant [[NightmareFace evil faces]]. [[Anime/YuGiOhZEXAL Shingetsu/Vector]] anyone? Though his character development is slowly edging him out of this.
** He's also a mix between [[Anime/YuGiOh5Ds Bruno]] (helping out with the heroes) and [[Anime/YuGiOh5Ds Lucciano]] (being a child Duelist working with the bad guys). And like Bruno, he stays loyal to his new friends.
** Sora's old position as the smart guy in You Show, ties to the villains and relationship to the hero and heroine make him a partially expy of [[Series/KamenRiderGaim Mitsuzane Kureshima]]. But while Micchy started on the heroes' side and slowly turned evil and insane due to his relationships with the Kouta and Mai, Sora was the inverse. Sora started evil, but due to Yuya and Yuzu's friendship, who are expies of Kouta and Mai, he is slowly going through a HeelFaceTurn.
* FaceHeelTurn: Sora was actually EvilAllAlong. After showing his true colors and being forcefully teleported back to Academia, he has become an enemy.
* FantasticRacism: Considers Fusion the best kind of summon, and actively looks down upon Xyz Duelists, using that as a justification to target them for fun. Averted when Yuya Xyz Summons, he's more impressed by the existence of a Pendulum Xyz.
* FinalBoss: Of the Miami Championship arc, being the last remaining Academia member remaining after invading the tournament.
* {{Foreshadowing}}: His use of Fusion and his influence on Yuzu and by proxy Yuya ends up foreshadowing the later plot of the Dark Duelist's enemies using Fusions. This turns out to be more than a coincidence as he is revealed in Episode 34 to have a hand in the destruction of what is implied to be Heartland, Kurosaki's home. And his nature is further foreshadowed by the cards he uses, cute little creatures that when fused take on a disturbing corrupted form.
* ForTheEvulz: The reason Sora and his fellow Fusion duelists hunted Xyz duelists.
* ForcedIntoEvil: Sora seems to believe no matter what he does because he was raised by the Academia, he is stuck to them forever.
* FriendlessBackground: He grew up without any friends in Academia, Yuzu and Yuya being his first.
* TheGadfly: Enjoys teasing Yuya a lot. He also teased Yuzu over her interest in Yuto a lot while he tutored her.
* GreenEyes: Of the "mysterious" variety. Also turns out to be of the "untrustworthy" variety (until his actual HeelFaceTurn, at least).
* TheHeavy: Despite being under the Professor's orders and [[TheDragon Yuri]] and [[TheMole Dennis]] being around, he is the leader of the invasion force during the Battle Royale. Reiji also remarks that Sora's Fusion power indirectly influenced Yuya, which resulted to the births of Rune-Eyes Pendulum Dragon and Beast-Eyes Pendulum Dragon.
* HeelFaceRevolvingDoor: Sora's an asshole, that's for sure. But saving an unconscious Yuzu and going after Yuya to tell him that she's okay makes him look saner than [[TheDreaded Yuri]] or the [[{{Sadist}} Obelisk Force]]. Episode 80 reveals that he saved Yuzu out of genuine concern for her well-being and that he's starting to have doubts towards the Professor and the "mission" of uniting all four worlds. Yuya is pleading with Sora at this point to abandon Academia like Serena did and join the right side.
* HeelFaceTurn: Sora ultimately decides to help Yuya save Serena and do the right thing.
* HiddenDepths: Initially, there were no hints as to what they were, but Sora's not just an annoying kid. Yuto especially stated Sora isn't from "around here". In Episode 33, he reacts for a second at the name "Heartland". And in episode 34, he reveals himself to be part of the faction attacking Kurosaki and Yuto's hometown, saying that they do it for fun. In Episode 35, he reveals what the Fusion faction do to their victims: not keeping them prisoners in holding cells, ''but in cards.''
** On a more positive note, it's heavily implied by his use of Yuya's catchphrase that he genuinely respects Yuya. And according to [[WordOfGod series director Katsumi Ono]], he truly loves having fun and eating candy above all else, including revenge. Episode 80 reinforces this, as Sora admits to Yuya and himself that he ''does'' like Yuya and Yuzu, doing anything to keep them safe, even if it means disobeying the Professor's '''absolute''' orders.
* HomingLasers: Courtesy of Des-Toy Wheel Saw Lion and Chain Sheep both.
* HyperAwareness: Realizes that Yuto is following him and Yuzu.
* IAmNotLeftHanded: A meta moment, but in Episode 33, we see Sora's extra deck and it is HUGE. Showing us he has a lot more Fusion monsters than just Des-Toy Scissor Bear.
* IconicItem: His distinctive pink-and-white-swirled lollipop. However, after TheReveal, it's replaced by a smaller green one.
* IdiotBall: Oh sure, Sora, mock the 2000 ATK Revolution Falcon after the 100 ATK Rise Falcon kicked your ass. And piss off Kurosaki by telling him what you did to his homeland and bragging about it after he's proven capable enough to knock you down. [[SarcasmMode That'll end well]]. Possibly justified due to VillainousBreakdown. Doubly applicable when it's revealed that Mad Chimaera could have prevented Kurosaki's use of Rank-Up-Magic Revolution force had Sora activated that effect, which he did not despite ''knowing'' that Kurosaki had a face-down card and once again shows off Sora's immense arrogance.
* IronicEcho: Says Yuya's trademark line, "The fun's just getting started!", as he makes the winning move against Kurosaki. The dark red background, the shadows in Sora's eyes, and his insane smile and laughter makes the scene all types of disturbing.
* JapanesePronouns: Uses the masculine pronoun ''boku'', which is usually used by young boys. Except when he gets serious against Yuto, and switches to the more masculine and mature "ore."
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Sora slides between this and JerkWithAHeartOfJerk; he's introduced as the former, a BrutalHonesty BrattyHalfPint, and during the Maiami Championship arc slides firmly into the latter; mocking everyone from the Xyz Dimension[[note]]Yuto looking like Yuya doesn't spare him from this[[/note]] and reviling in the evil that he causes (with many a choice SlasherSmile no less) to the point of trying to mock even ''Yuya''. He does get a few PetTheDog moments that turn out to be key to his psyche. He returns to JerkWithAHeartOfGold in the Synchro Dimension precisely because of these; his friendship with (and their subsequent coaxing) Yuya and Yuzu prompts his HeelFaceTurn.
* JerkassHasAPoint: As mentioned in BrutalHonesty, he was pretty spot on when he pointed out that Yuya was the only reason LDS didn't acquire the You Show Duel School.
* KickTheDog: Several. He reveals gleefully how his group attacked Heartland, and then turns Hikage into a card. He then completely rejects Yuya's attempts to invoke a HeelFaceTurn, claiming that they were never friends.
* KillerRabbit: His Furnimal/Edge Imp/Des-Toy deck. Also a reflection of his own BadassAdorable nature and his HiddenDepths. Note that in the real game (but not in series yet) there is a monster called Furnimal Rabbit.
* KillerTeddyBear: Again, his deck. Bonus point for his ([[SerialEscalation initial]]) signature card actually being named Scissor Bear.
* LackOfEmpathy: Sora doesn't see that his and Academia's actions against the Xyz Dimension was wrong and instead considers it fun. When others call him out on this, he just shrugs it off, saying its necessary to unite the dimensions. The Synchro arc is starting to subvert this trope, as Yuya's constant questioning is slowly bringing Sora around to his way of thinking, to the point that he even apologizes to Tsukikage for carding Hikage.
* LeParkour: Being trained in Fusion has its upsides. He has improbably good skills for a small child, being able to WallJump, leap across wide gaps and rooftops, and ''chase a D-Wheel''.
* LetsGetDangerous: He sees most of his duels as just a plaything, since nobody (aside Yuya) has been able to pass his Des-Toy Scissor Bear, until Episode 33. Kurosaki outsmarts him and destroys his monsters with Raid Raptors - Rise Falcon. Sora, at the end of the episode, though a little surprised, gets up, pulls a SlasherSmile and he finally decides to get a serious fight.
* LooseLips: Was dragged back to Academia for revealing their plans to Yuto, but not Yuya (though he was there), since Standard Dimension isn't the enemy.
* MeaningfulName: His dub surname "Perse" is both a shade of purple and the name of a real-life private school in Cambridge, signifying his allegiance to Academia (recall that Fusion Monsters have purple card borders). His original surname, "Shiun'in", also incorporates kanji for "violet" and "school".
* MoralityPet: Yuya and Yuzu are this for him.
* MrExposition: Oddly enough. He is the only one in You Show that seems to know the mechanics of the advanced Summoning methods that are apparently not available for general public. Especially Xyz.
* ObfuscatingStupidity: Sora likes to play the playful, cheerful and (sometimes) helpless child card in his duels, until he's pushed hard enough to get dangerous. Also, because he hardly finds people able to excite him enough to do it.
** He also hides his true nature during the duel with Kurosaki until he is pushed to the edge and gleefully reveals his hand in the attacks on his hometown.
* OhCrap: He gets this quite a few times through his first duel with Kurosaki. There's also a notable one when he realizes that Yuya seems to think that he's carded Yuzu (plus he's surrounded by the enemy). Sora promptly hightails it back to his dimension. (As it later turns out, he was afraid that one of his comrades might accidently captured Yuzu while mistaking her for Serena since they switched clothes, and Sora had no intention to capture Yuzu, only Serena.)
* OnceKilledAManWithANoodleImplement: Beats up Sawatari and his three goons using a ''lollipop stick''.
* TheOnlyOneAllowedToDefeatYou: How he feels about Kurosaki after Kurosaki beat him in their first duel. He even calls him his "prey". He finally pays him back in Episode 47.
* OOCIsSeriousBusiness: Lets just say the You Show was greatly shocked by his true nature.
* OurDemonsAreDifferent: Known as Fiend-Type in the TCG, the Edge Imps are possessed cutting instruments, which in turn combine with stuffed toys, mangling them to create diabolical playthings, the Des-Toys.
* OutOfFocus: Despite being prominent early and being TheHeavy in the invasion arc, after he was sent back to Fusion, he remained absent for the next thirty or so episodes until he reappeared in the Synchro Dimension to assist Yuya and Yuzu.
* PetTheDog:
** He agreed to teach Yuzu how to Fusion Summon. Subverted, as he later revealed that it was for the glory of Fusion. Double Subverted, he later admits it was out of friendship.
** An odd version. He finishes up his final qualifier duel quickly, to ensure that Yuzu has time to see the end of Yuya's duel with Mieru. He then later gave Yuya an honest congratulations for Fusion Summoning perfectly on his first try.
** After his allegiance to the BigBad is revealed, he gets one when the Professor orders him to recapture Serena who looks like Yuzu. Sora is shocked at the idea of capturing his friend. Even after the Professor clarifies that Serena and Yuzu are different people, he has trouble getting past the fact Serena looks too much like Yuzu.
** Later after he saves Dennis he insists that he goes home because he is hurt, and promises that he will complete his mission for him, all the while being extremely courteous and kind to him.
** After saving Yuzu from certain death, he drags her unconscious body somewhere safe before going out to give Yuya a message.
** :He later genuinely apologizes to Tsukikage for his brother, though he knows it won't make up for it, and asks he simply wait until after Yuya is safe to take revenge.
* PleaseKillMeIfItSatisfiesYou: Offers this to Tsukikage for carding his brother, but asks that he wait until after he rescues Yuya.
* {{Pride}}:
** Sora is so proud of his dueling skills, particularly Fusion, that he tends to not take other duelists seriously enough.
** When Yuya mentions he needs to beat SIX duelists ''in a row'' to qualify for the tournament, he just shrugs it off and mentions it won't be a problem. Yuya calls him out on this, saying that Sora should stop underestimating his opponents or he's going to regret it.
** He considers a rematch between Yuzu and Masumi will have a vastly different outcome, since he was the one who taught Yuzu the mechanics of Fusion Summoning. When Masumi calls him out on this, he merely dismisses her and tells her that LDS and its Fusion course isn't as great as she thinks it is. Angered, she immediately wants to duel HIM, which then causes Sora to lament what a waste of time it would be, ''since he'll end up hurting her confidence even more.''
** When Yuto suggests that Fusion doesn't fit Yuzu's dueling style, Sora considers that an insult and suggests a duel to show him his place.
** When Yuya tries to warn him about Kurosaki, he insists that he'll be perfectly fine. When Kurosaki destroys his Des-Toy Scissor Bear, [[LetsGetDangerous Sora finally shows his teeth.]]
** Even then though, Sora acts extremely smug, not believing that Kurosaki will get past his Fusion Monsters. Each time they activate their effects or attack though, Kurosaki still has a counter towards them. Sora undergoes SanitySlippage, yelling that Kurosaki won't survive the attack and effect of Des-Toy Mad Chimaera. Kurosaki uses the effect of Chimaera against Sora, using a Rank-Up card to summon Raid Raptors - Revolution Falcon, and wins the duel, on Sora's turn no less. After that, Sora begs Kurosaki for a rematch, only for Kurosaki to walk away as Sora faints.
** The guy is still arrogant despite his loss to Kurosaki, claiming that "he wasn't going all out" and that if he did, he could've easily won. Notably, whenever he's being bested in a duel, Sora starts losing his cool.
** His arrogance returns in full force when he engages in a rematch with Kurosaki. When Kurosaki suggests that he go grab a Action Card to help him out, Sora states that he doesn't need anything like that and his skill will be enough. He's proven right.
** Agrees with having a rematch duel with Yuya since he doesn't like the fact that he has a "loss record" with him.
* ThePromise: He made a promise with Yuya to protect Yuzu for him in Episode 80. Sora even states that he plans to uphold it by bring Yuya to Yuzu.
* PunnyName: Des-Toy, the Japanese name for his deck archetype. It's a pun to "Death Toy" and sounds like "destroy." Overlaps with MeaningfulName due to the monsters' appearances and offensive effects.
* PuppyDogEyes: When his [[DeliberatelyCuteChild act of cuteness]] isn't enough, Sora weaponizes the puppy eyes pout, and he can even add some CrocodileTears for extra power.
* PutOnABus:
** After being sent back to Academia, Sora is absent until the Battle Royal starts.
** After the Battle Royal, he is absent until half of the Synchro Dimension arc.
** [[spoiler:With Yuya and half of the Lancers being in the Xyz Dimension, Sora, the other half of the Lancers as well as Jack and Crow are absent for now.]]
* RhymesOnADime: His summoning chants in the dub.
--> '''Sora''': "Edge of sharpness and fury of bear, when the two come together you had better beware!"
* SanitySlippage: During the second half of his duel with Kurosaki, Sora gets more and more unhinged, until he's just a screaming mess.
** SanityStrengthening: See TookALevelInKindness
* ScrewTheRulesImDoingWhatsRight: As soon as he sees Yuya's SuperpoweredEvilSide the second time, "[[HeelFaceTurn To hell with Academia, I'm going to save my friends!]]" is his [[DefectorFromDecadence reaction]].
* ScrewThisImOuttaHere: He warps away after the end of the Battle Royale in Episode 49.
* ShipperOnDeck: One for Yuya/Yuzu.
* SixthRanger: To the Lancers after his HeelFaceTurn. He could be counted as one, but he is not officially a Lancer yet, [[spoiler:since he and half of the Lancers are PutOnABus]].
* TheSmartGuy: Sora is not only familiar with the different Special Summoning methods, he also judges most situations right, making him the smartest duelist among the four heroes. At least until his FaceHeelTurn.
* SlasherSmile: At the end of Episode 33. Does this repeatedly throughout the next episode. Later this becomes Sora's trademark as his true personality is out for the world to see.
* SmugSmiler: Very confident in his reading of people and his dueling knowledge which allows him to be one step ahead of his opponent. This also serves as a hint to the audience about his his mysterious HiddenDepths.
* SociopathicSoldier: Well, Duelist in any case, though this does entail actively harming his opponents and destroying their city. He believes Fusion Duelists to be far superior to Xyz Duelists, and targets them just for fun.
* SoreLoser: Sora just can't accept the fact that he lost to Kurosaki and insists that he's the "stronger" of the two when he's not holding back, despite the audience clearly seeing that Kurosaki won fair and square. Downplayed when he goes to duel Yuya for a second time during the Battle Royal sub-arc. He comments he doesn't like having a losing record against Yuya, but would not have gone after him had Yuya not insisted on dueling.
* SourSupporter: Downplayed. Sora is more realistic and knows how to choose his opponents. His attitude often clashes with the more optimistic and idealist members of You Show.
* SpannerInTheWorks: His actions in Episode 78 foils Roget's plan in regards to capture and use Yuzu as a bargaining chip against Academia.
* StalkerWithoutACrush: Sora in Episode 5 was more or less stalking Yuya.
* SteppingStonesInTheSky: How he manages to avoid being caught under a collapsing building.
* StudentAndMasterTeam: Whenever he Tags with Yuzu.
* SweetTooth: Sora is always eating something sweet. ALWAYS.
* TheThingThatWouldNotLeave: Hoo boy. Sora spends half of episode 5 following Yuya. From his house to his school, from his classroom to his ''toilet break''. And even after Yuya beats him in a Duel, he joins You Show to become Yuya's friend rather than his apprentice. Then he leaves after getting called out on being a dick in episode 14.
* ThisCannotBe: Calm, confident, and a little bit smug, he nevertheless was ''astonished'' when Gongenzaka subverts his expectations. '''Twice.'''
** Again during his duel with Kurosaki, as Kurosaki pretty much counters every single one of Sora's moves, even using the effect of Sora's strongest monster against him to win the duel.
* TookALevelInKindness: Hanging out with Yuya and Yuzu has significantly improved his sanity.
* {{Troll}}: Whenever Sora starts getting the upper hand, he starts acting like this to antagonize his opponents. The greatest example is when he rebels against Obelisk Force and steals all their monsters with his ace Deathtoy Mad Chimera, giving them a smile as he kicks their asses with them.
* TrueCompanions: Sora considers Yuya and Yuzu this. Crosses into both CrowningMomentOfHeartwarming and TearJerker territories when he muses aloud that they are his ''first and only friends''. Later he shows that he sees all of You Show as this.
* TokenEvilTeammate: Seemingly averted. Rather than be taken back to You Show by Yuya even after learning what a monster he is, Sora is warped back to the Fusion Dimension and is now an enemy to Yuya and the others.
* {{Tykebomb}}: This is how he was raised as shown in Episode 80.
* UnderestimatingBadassery: Sora completely underestimates Kurosaki and Yuto as they are Xyz users. Averted in his rematch with Kurosaki, while still mocking him, Sora carefully analyzes his plays.
* TheUnreveal: In Episode 36, he was going to reveal the ultimate Fusion Monster, before he got taken back home. Subverted, as [[FreezeFrameBonus you can see a bit of the card on his Duel Disk]] before he's teleported away: it's just Frightfur Chimera.
* VillainBall: See the IdiotBall up there? He's only been this dumb when he was a villain, and the only times that he hasn't were when he had prior information about his foes, aka Kurosaki and Dark Rebellion. And despite strict instructions from the Professor to pursue Serena first and Kurosaki later, guess who he goes after first? The only reason that it didn't bite him harder than it could have was because fortunately Serena was looking for Kurosaki herself.
* VillainExitStageRight: Books it at the end of the Battle Royal, after hearing that Yuzu went missing.
* VillainousBreakdown: At the end of his duel with Kurosaki, he was reduced to an insane screaming mess. Yuto also dealt it to him in considerably less time, though he was still fresh from his last breakdown.
* VillainousRescue:
** A villain on villain variant, when Dennis is injured after his duel with Kurosaki and the Council and Security are fighting over him, Sora sends him home to Academia (so he cannot spy on Serena anymore).
** He also saves Yuzu from certain death in Episode 78, although his villain status is called into question. He additionally planned to send Yuzu back to Standard to keep her out of Fusion's way, but she adamantly protested against the fact, since that would mean leaving Yuya and her friends behind.
* WalkingSpoiler: Sora being initially EvilAllAlong and him eventually pulling a HeelFaceTurn in the next season make most of the spoiler tags useless.
* WasItAllALie?: During he and Yuya's second duel, he tells him they are not friends anymore, and that this is his true self. Though by the end of the duel, he doesn't sound too sure himself either. Episode 80 finally sheds some light on Sora's mindset: he grew to care for both Yuya and Yuzu.
* WellIntentionedExtremist: He claims what he is doing is for the purpose of bringing the dimensions into one.
* WhatTheHellHero: On the receiving end of this from the kids for his attitude, and later Yuya for when he revealed his true self.
** Yuya calling him out again for still siding with Academia, knowing how rotten they are, and how Sora was willing to exchange Serena's freedom for Yuzu's, despite her trying to escape it.
* TheWorfEffect: A rare physical one for this series. [[spoiler:Despite Sora being a skilled fighter and Duelist, he and Tsukikage are both physically beaten by Sergey, and then by Roget in a duel, although Roget cheated by using hologram clones. Also interesting in that neither opponent is ultimately taken down by the main protagonist; Sergey defeated Yuya and then fell to Jack, while Roget is dueling Reiji.]]
* WorfHadTheFlu: [[spoiler:He and Tsukikage lost to Roget, but it took him a second try and cheating with FightingAShadow antics.]]
* WorthyOpponent: Considers Yuya one, as he comments on how fun it is to duel Yuya after seeing Odd-Eyes Rebellion Dragon.
* YouGottaHaveBlueHair: Cyan, to be precise.

[[folder:Yuri]]
!!Yuri
!!!Voiced by: Creator/KenshoOno
[[quoteright:242:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/2ced3443c50fc2ee015aaf70c4fdd48c.png]]

A member of Academia under the direct command of Professor Leo Akaba. Like Yuto and Yugo, he strongly resembles Yuya. Yuri has captured Ruri and Rin from their respective dimensions on behalf of the Professor and with Serena under their wing, his new task is to capture Yuzu, the fourth and final piece. Cold, cruel and ruthless in his tasks, Yuri is one of the most sadistic characters introduced in the series, with an effective dueling style that has yet to be shown. Later revealed to be the Fusion Dimensional Counterpart to Yuya, due to them [[OnlySixFaces sharing the same face.]] He uses a Predator Plants deck.
----
!!!Tropes associated with Yuri:
* AgentPeacock: A flashy dresser and a dangerous duelist.
* AnimeHair: Like the majority of the franchise, his hair is impossible.
* AllegedLookalikes: With Yuya, Yuto, and Yugo, he seems to has been mistaken for both Yuto and Yugo by the other. Yuzu first mistakes him for Yuya, but then she remembers that aside from Yuto there is another one who looks like Yuya, so she assumes that he is... Yugo.
* BadassCape: A short red one.
* BadassLongCoat: He wears also a coat, since his cape isn't long enough.
* BadassLongRobe: He wore a cloak with a hoodie when he kidnapped Rin and Ruri. Yugo saw his face when Yuri kidnapped the former, but the cloak possibly added extra confusion to the whole IdenticalStranger issue for Yugo, as Yuri's cloak resembles Yuto's cape.
* BerserkButton: His button seems to be being mistaken for someone else. Getting in his way also annoys the crap out of him.
* BigOlEyebrows: Has very thick, pink eyebrows.
* BloodKnight: [[spoiler:He wanted to duel Serena rather than just arrest her to make it more fun. When he notices Serena current condition, he offers to duel Sora instead. He expresses little interest at Yugo's demands until he remembers that he beat Serena and decides to duel him.]]
* BrilliantButLazy: Has some shades of this, as in Episode 86 he complains that it is a pain that Starve Venom brought him to Yugo.
* ComeOutComeOutWhereverYouAre: As if it wasn't obvious enough that he's a sociopath, he's shown to do this to both Yuzu and Rin, clearly enjoying himself while cornering them, and in Rin's case saying to her face that their ''game'' of hide and seek was over. Later it's revealed this was the same for Ruri.
* TheComicallySerious: Despite being a psychopathic AgentPeacock, [[spoiler:Yuri gets dumbfounded at Yuya's {{Synchronization}} and Yugo's hilarious antics]].
* CompositeCharacter: He is pretty similar to Supreme King Judai, but has a deck and ace monster that has more in common with Yubel's final deck and [[Anime/YuGiOh5Ds Aki's]].
* DangerouslyGenreSavvy: At the start of the series, Yuri was the only one of Yuya's counterparts privy to the existences of other dimensions, including the fact that they're are others who look just like him. However, rather than be surprised about this, he weaponizes this knowledge, seen when he deliberately leads Yugo into the destroyed Xyz Dimension to meet Yuto. Since Yugo only saw Yuri's face at night, along with the fact that Yuri was wearing a cloak to disguise himself, he automatically assumed Yuto was the culprit; in turn, Yuto mistook Yugo for Yuri since Ruri was already missing. In short, Yuri took advantage of the general confusion between the two counterparts and threw off any trail leading back to himself, all the while smiling in the background like the cunning bastard that he is.
* DarkIsEvil: His ace monster belongs to the Attribute DARK.
* DeathGlare: He gives a chilling one to [[spoiler:Yugo]].
* DidntSeeThatComing: Yuri becomes surprised when Yuzu's bracelet teleports him somewhere else.
* TheDragon: For the Professor. He also captured Ruri and Rin for him. Episode 91 shows that he is very highly ranked within the Obelisk Force, who are the Professor's hand picked force, calling him "-sama" showing he's above them in ranking.
* TheDreaded: Almost everyone is afraid of Yuri, to the point that just the threat of him coming on the scene is enough to motivate people. Roget doesn't want Academia to invade the Synchro Dimension, but he's ''terrified'' when he thinks Yuri might come. Even his own allies fear him; when Yuzu is about to duel Obelisk Force and Yuri arrives looking for her, the latter quickly clear out, and Barrett tells the Professor he can complete his mission alone and doesn't want Yuri around. For his part, Yuri seems to ''enjoy'' being feared, and is shown sadistically toying with his opponents on multiple occasions.
* DuelsDecideEverything: Invoked, whenever Yuri goes to secure a bracelet girl he always duels them to give them a chance to escape. He usually does this for fun.
* EvilCounterpart:
** Unlike Yuto, who is just a {{Foil}}, and Yugo, who's NotSoDifferent from Yuto himself, Yuri is indeed a real evil counterpart for Yuya. WordOfGod states that he works for Academia for [[ForTheEvulz FUN.]]
** His Starve Venom Fusion Dragon is one for Odd-Eyes Pendulum Dragon, resembling a heavily distorted and corrupted version of it. It also looks like a twisted version of Clear Wing Synchro Dragon, too.
* EvilIsPetty: [[ArsonMurderAndJayWalking Despite his atrocities of kidnapping girls and carding people, he takes time to]] make Yugou/fusion {{Troll}} puns to Yugo.
* FauxAffablyEvil: He seems to be somewhat respectful, if mocking, to Yuzu despite it being his mission to capture her. That said, he also heartlessly seals Olga and Halil into cards just because they were in the way.
* ForTheEvulz: Seems to be the reason why he does anything. A good example is episode 91 when [[spoiler:Yuri finds Serena. He admits he could easily capture her due to her current state but refuses as it would be too boring and instead wants to duel her with her freedom at stake]].
* {{Foreshadowing}}: He was shown in the second opening after Yuto and Yugo, Yuya's other alternative selves.
** Viewers got a glimpse of Yuri's dimensional dragon, which is shrouded in shadow: a giant, snake-like purple monstrosity with [[RedEyesTakeWarning red eyes.]][[note]]Its eyes are actually green. A similar thing happened with Clear Wing Synchro Dragon.[[/note]] When it is finally revealed, it doesn't look like its silhouette at all.
** In the fourth opening in the shot with the other counterparts, behind him is what appears to be a web. But upon closer inspection it's vines.
* FromBadToWorse: Yuri shows up and orders three Obelisk Force members to leave Yuzu alone. [[OhCrap Yuzu would've been better off fighting the three minions...]]
* GlowingEyesOfDoom: How he was shown in the second opening with his FaceFramedInShadow. Once the opening reveals his face, his eyes don't glow anymore, [[http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/43a81b82d354389e65ce498a1f4429f7.jpg but he looks even more evil than it was shadowed]]. [[spoiler:He gets them for real in episodes 87-88 and later on in episodes 91-92.]]
* GreenThumb: He uses a Predator Plants deck, which is full of carnivorous plant monsters.
* HairAntennae: But don't let them fool you. He's not dumb, and he's not a nice guy ''at all''.
* HellishPupils: During Opening 4, in a [[FreezeFrameBonus blink-and-you'll-miss-it-moment]], Yuri's eyes take on a reptilian state, making him look even more [[NightmareFace demonic and creepy]]. Shows up again briefly during Opening 5 when he's clashing with Yugo.
* IAmLegion: Whenever Yuri summons his ace dragon and/or is possessed by his SuperpoweredEvilSide, he and any of his counterparts nearby also undergo Synchronization. The result is that both Yuri and his "twin" start speaking in unison and exude some sort of sinister dark power. [[spoiler:This comes to a near breaking point in Episode 92, where Yuya, Yuto, Yugo and Yuri have all of their signature dragons on the field and all are screaming "WE WILL BECOME ONE!!!"]]
* IdenticalStranger: Yuri's face is the same as Yuya and his other two doppelgängers. Unlike Yuto and Yugo, however, Yuri also ''sounds'' like Yuya, helped since they both have the same seiyuu. This was later revealed to be the reason for Yugo and Yuto's rivalry. Both Yuto and Yugo thought the other to be Yuri.
* InstantAwesomeJustAddDragons: Like his counterparts, his ace is a dragon and considering the dimension he comes from, it's brought out through Fusion.
* JapanesePronouns: Unlike his counterparts, he uses "boku", which gives him a FauxAffablyEvil vibe. [[spoiler:But when he is syncing with Yuya, he uses "ore".]]
* {{Jerkass}}: Yuri is meant to be Yuya's opposite in every way: Yuya's kind, understanding and wants to make a person smile; Yuri's cruel, impatient and loves filling someone with terror. When asked by Yuzu why he's going around sealing people in cards like he did to poor Olga and Halil, he responds with a nonchalant "they were in my way."
* JustFollowingOrders:
** He claims that he's just following the Professor's orders after carding Halil and Olga and attacking Yuzu.
** He also claims this to [[spoiler:Yugo when he demands Yuri to take him to Rin]].
* KickTheDog: He defeated and "carded" Olga and Halil without any regret. He then goes to chase poor Yuzu, all while smiling about it. It's the same when he goes after Ruri and Rin.
** Rather than simply arrest [[spoiler:Serena]] while she's weakened, he would rather duel her and watch her squirm. When he tries to duel [[spoiler:Sora]] in her place, he mentions how annoying it would be to drag both of them back and would opt for ''killing'' him instead.
* TheLastOfTheseIsNotLikeTheOthers: Starve Venom is Level 8 and has 2800 ATK, not to mention his entire deck, as instead of being a reference to Judai (like how Yuya's is like Yugi's, Yugo is like Yusei's), his deck is similar to Yubel's, the main antagonist from season 3 who later ends up being inside Judai's body.
** Unlike the rest of the dimensional counterparts, Yuri shows no sign of recognizing nor sympathizing with Serena and vice-versa; all the other counterparts have demonstrated at least some form of intimate closeness with their partner but that is absent here.
* LeParkour: He shows some impressive agility in episode 86, easily jumping off the duel palace and avoiding Yugo. In episode 91, Yuri casually flips over a large construction hole and continues his conversation as if nothing had happened.
* ManEatingPlant: The Predator Plants archetype is based around Venus Flytraps and Pitcher Plants.
* ManipulativeBastard: He kidnaps Rin and leads Yugo to the Xyz dimension where he meets Yuto. The two assume the each other as enemies and fight, while Yuri is hiding and smiling in the background.
* MeaningfulName: Yuri, or Joeri means "farmer."[[note]] Although Yuri comes from Russian transliteration, while Joeri is from Dutch.[[/note]] Which fits, considering [[ManEatingPlant the type]] of Deck [[GreenThumb he uses]].
* MulticoloredHair: Violet and pink.
* NotSoDifferent: For all his evil and TheLastOfTheseIsNotLikeTheOthers traits, Yuri is ultimately one of Yuya's dimensional counterparts, which means that he's just as much of a CosmicPlaything as they are and as seen in his interactions with Yugo, just as silly.
* ObviouslyEvil: If his smug face during his introduction isn't enough, the second version of the second opening highlights how evil he looks.
* OOCIsSeriousBusiness:
** He's almost always FauxAffablyEvil or smiling evilly. That's why his DeathGlare to [[spoiler:Yugo]] is so damn terrifying.
** And in a humorous variant, his confusion after [[spoiler:waking up from the synchronization,]] and then shock at Yugo thinking [[spoiler:Yuzu]] is dead.
* OverTheShoulderCarry: How he kidnapped Rin.
* {{Planimal}}: Starve Venom Fusion Dragon incorporates several features of deadly plants into its body, including several Venus Flytrap maws, thorns, and petals. Its tail also resembles a vine.
* PoisonIsEvil: His ace dragon, Starve Venom Fusion Dragon.
* PoisonousPerson: His dragon is implied to be one, its name is Starve Venom Fusion Dragon. It is also part of the Venom Archetype due to sharing the same kanji.
* PsychoForHire: [[AllThereInTheManual Supplementary materials]] reveal that he only works for Academia because it's fun. As seen in the anime, he follows the Professor's orders without questions and does not care about the reasons behind them as long as he has fun doing his missions.
* PurpleIsPowerful: He is primarily dressed in purple and is TheDreaded. Starve Venom Fusion Dragon has also more base-ATK than the other three dragons.
* ShoutOut: His dragon's name includes Venom, seemingly in reference to the archetype used by Professor Cobra in ''GX''.
* SlasherSmile: Most of his smiles are these and they are [[NightmareFuel disturbing!!]]
* SmokeOut: Flashbomb variant, he uses the spell card Violet Flash in this manner to escape.
* SmugSmiler: In his first appearance. The title of Episode 47 is even called "The Cold Smile of Yuri." This becomes the norm for him whenever he speaks to anyone unless they manage to annoy him.
* SoftSpokenSadist: Yuri is very calm in his speech, but absolutely enjoys being a Duel Soldier. Shown very well in episode 54 where we see Yuri capture Rin and again in episode 75 when he captures Ruri.
* SpellMyNameWithAnS: An official website and the anime spell his name as "Joeri." Before that, it was "Juri."
* {{Synchronization}}: [[spoiler:His mind syncs with Yuya, Yugo, and Yuto's at the same time in episode 87 and 88. Episode 92 takes the cake with all four screaming their desire to become one entity.]]
* {{Troll}}: Deliberately antagonizes Yugo by making several Fusion puns. Later when he thinks that Yugo is messing with him by saying Yuzu exists within his "heart" and can "see her anytime", Yuri mentions the same should apply to Rin.
* WaistcoatOfStyle: Under his BadassLongCoat. How many layers does this guy wear anyway?
* WhamLine: From episode 92, shared with Yugo, Yuya and Yuto: [[spoiler:"We shall become one."]]
* WholeCostumeReference: Yuri's outfit resembles Judai's Supreme King armor with the cape and long coat even having spheres to hold the cape. But it was made by the Academia mixing Judai's two looks.
* WildCard: Yuri doesn't care about sides as seen in Episode 47; he'll seal anyone that gets in his way into cards as he threatened the Obelisk Force for trying to duel his target Yuzu and actually "carding" Halil and Olga. He only seems to listen to the Professor.
* YouGottaHaveBlueHair: Violet and pink.

[[folder:Serena (Celina)]]
!!Serena
A girl from the Fusion Dimension who looks like Yuzu, Serena runs away from Academia to catch Xyz remnants in Standard. After meeting Yuzu and learning from her the truth of how Academia goes about fulfilling their "noble" mission, as well as seeing her fellow dimensional compatriots in action, Serena switches sides and joins the Lancers.

[[folder:Barrett]]
!!Barrett
!!!Voiced by: Miou Tanaka
[[quoteright:198:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/eba8315e497a863372aa4d1f013c5912.png]]

Serena's bodyguard, Barrett is a Duel Soldier from Academia. He uses a Beastborg deck based around fusing together Beast-Warrior-type and Machine-type monsters, and inflicting burn damage to the opponent. After his loss to Reiji, he returns to Academia, but not before calling in an invading force. Later, Professor Akaba tasks Barrett with the mission of retrieving both Yuzu and Serena during the Synchro Dimension arc, a mission Barrett gladly accepts in order to redeem himself in the eyes of his home dimension due to his past failure against the Professor's son.
----
!!!Tropes associated with Barrett:
* AffablyEvil: He uses {{Keigo}} and shows no signs of evilness when dueling Reiji. Starting to become subverted when he duels Yuya in Episode 90 onwards. Then double subverted in episode 92.
* AntiVillain: He's a polite NobleDemon type character.
* AscendedExtra: Professor Akaba plans to send him and Obelisk Force into the Synchro Dimension to capture both Yuzu and Serena, in an effort for Barrett to redeem himself after his loss to Reiji.
* BodyguardingABadass: Serena took down Hokuto on her own, so we know she's at least a capable duelist. Barrett is still her bodyguard.
* BullyingADragon: Duels Reiji and Yuya, two of the most powerful duelists in the show out of loyalty to the Professor and Academia. Later he's forced to duel [[spoiler:Sergey and ends up losing]].
** Subverted against Yuya, since Barrett controls the whole duel until [[spoiler:Sergey kicks in]].
* TheCaptain: The Obelisk Force refer to him as Captain Barrett.
* ChainPain: In his duel against Yuya, Barrett's trap cards utilizes chains to restrain monsters in place to protect his ace monster and continue inflicting burn damage.
* CripplingOverspecialization: His second deck is focused on defeating singular opponents. Considering that he's fighting in a war where anyone can jump into a duel for a 2000 Life Points penalty, it ultimately proves ineffectual.
* {{Cyborg}}: Not him, but his Fusion Monster, Beastborg Panther Predator, is one.
* DarkIsNotEvil: His ace is a DARK-attribute, but he seems to be a PunchClockVillain at worst.
** DarkIsEvil: He's far more brutal when he returns though ultimately he subverts this when he grows to respect Yuya's resolve to protect both Yuzu and Serena and actually offers to continue the duel despite holding a significant advantage.
* DealWithTheDevil: Barrett's not a complete evil tool but considering who he works for, his offer to Serena was very enticing: if she gives herself up willingly, he'll try to convince the Professor on her behalf into letting her fight on the front lines as she originally wished. This fails due Serena's new experiences with the Lancers, plus her knowing what Academia ''really'' "fights" for.
* DuelsDecideEverything: Subverted, [[spoiler:despite losing to Sergey, as he landed next to Serena he decides to warp him and her away, to try to get back to the Professor]].
* EvilLaugh: More like a chuckle than a laugh but chaining up all of Yuya's monsters and finding dark amusement at his predicament qualifies as evil.
* EyeScream: In a flashback, he is caught in an explosion from an enemy Trap Card, Widespread Ruin, which pretty clearly destroyed one of his eyes, hence his...
** EyepatchOfPower: Experienced combatant variant.
* {{Foil}}: To Sergey, both serving as TheDragon or [[TheBrute brute]] to their master, and look similar. While Barrett is a NobleDemon and AffablyEvil, Sergey is AxCrazy and a {{Jerkass}}. Both interrupt their boss's plans, Barrett by letting Serena go to Standard, and Sergey by being AxCrazy.
* FreezeFrameBonus: [[spoiler:When he sends him and Serena away from the Synchro Dimension, you can briefly see on his Duel Disk interface that he is not pressing on the Academia button, but on the Xyz Dimension button.]]
* HoistByHisOwnPetard: His own cards have been huge factors in all his losses.
* HonorBeforeReason: Reiji earlier surmised that, as a war veteran, he has a fascination or obsession with medals.
** He's trapped Yuya in chains and prevents him from summoning and activating Magic and Trap cards but rather than knock him out, he gives Yuya a fighting chance to turn his situation around after seeing Yuya's resolve.
* HugeGuyTinyGirl: Serena is normal sized, but he's huge.
* IdiotBall:
** Even though Barrett was trying to [[TakingYouWithMe take Reiji down with him]], Special Summoning his monsters in Attack Position just cemented his loss. He notably learned from this one; he Special Summons his monsters in Defense Position against [[spoiler:Sergey, though he still loses]].
** Had he not used Medal of the White Sword's effect to increase Panther Predator's ATK and simply attacked Temujin, he would have won since both monsters would be destroyed, leaving Reiji defenseless and him with Dark Sentinel and Panther Warrior thanks to Predator's effect.
* InTheHood: When first seen in Maiami City, like Serena.
* JapanesePronouns: Uses the formal pronoun ''watashi'' which underlines his humble personality.
* NobleDemon: He's an AffablyEvil Duel Soldier, legitimately respects his opponents and doesn't like Yuri because he has no respect for the lives of their fellow men. Later calls out [[spoiler:Sergey for rudely entering his duel with Yuya]].
* OldSoldier: Barrett's entire deck is military-based and he's an experienced Duel Soldier.
* PantheraAwesome: Uses Panther Warrior, and a cyborg variant in Beastborg Panther Predator.
* SacrificialLion: He's a cunning and experienced duel veteran that brings out seemingly unbeatable combos just so Reiji and Yuya can show how powerful they are by overcoming them. [[spoiler:Subverted with Yuya, as it is instead Sergey that beats him.]]
* SavageWolves: His second Beastborg monster, Beastborg Wolf Kämpfer.
* ScarsAreForever: Has a cross-shaped scar on his chest and a big burn scar around his left eye.
* ShounenHair: His hair is like [[Anime/YuGiOh5Ds Antinomy's]], but shorter.
* ShoutOut: He looks like a more muscular, scarred [[Anime/CodeGeass Orange-kun]].
* SoldierVsWarrior: Averted completely. Barrett is a soldier who refers to himself as a warrior and his scars and medals as evidence of his skills as a warrior. He seems to see the two as one.
* SmugSmiler: While dueling Reiji and Yuya, he's prone to these at times, despite his politeness over the other characters from Academia.
* SpannerInTheWorks: [[spoiler:For Roget for taking away Serena while he was downed by Sergey, and for the Professor for accidentally going to the Xyz Dimension.]]
* TakingYouWithMe: Tries to take out Reiji with him, though he fails miserably.
* TeethClenchedTeamwork: While planning to eventually let him in on the hunt, Barrett requests to Professor Akaba [[spoiler:''not'' to send Yuri in with him and the Obelisk Force while they go after Yuzu and Serena, given that he doesn't really care for the man]].
* TookALevelInJerkass: While still a NobleDemon, he is far more brutal and scary when dueling Yuya in the Synchro Dimension than when he dueled Reiji. [[spoiler:Subverts it when he offers Yuya a chance to actually try and win by offering to continue the duel next episode.]]
* TortureTechnician: In episode 91 due to his traps, Yuya can't do anything which is shown by Yuya being bounded in chains. So he slowly lowers Yuya's life points yelling at him to reveal where Yuzu is.
* UndyingLoyalty: Apparently to Serena, though it could also be to the Professor.
* WeakButSkilled: His Beastborg monsters are level 6 and have low attack and average effects, yet are paired with lockdown tactics and the medal cards.
* TheWorfEffect: [[spoiler:Gets his (and Yuya's) ass kicked by Sergey's Earthbound Disciples in Episode 92, just to show why Sergey's reputation as the "[[RedBaron Duelist Crusher]]" isn't just for show.]]
* WorthyOpponent: Considers Reiji one, calling him brave for being willing to use cards that damage his own life points.
* WouldHurtAChild: Has no problem taking on Yuya or ordering Obelisk Force to go after [[spoiler:Reira]], though he takes no outright pleasure in it and says that he's just following orders.
* YouGottaHaveBlueHair: His hair is the same color as [[Anime/YuGiOh5Ds Bruno's]].

[[folder: Dennis Mackfield (Dennis [=McField=])]]
!!Dennis Mackfield
!!!Voiced by: Creator/TetsuyaKakihara (JP), Daniel J. Edwards (EN)
[[quoteright:133:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/736dc1ec3f517109b21f87eeed37bd9f.png]]

Dennis is supposedly an exchange student from the LDS Broadway branch who takes the Xyz Summon course. After saving Yuya from Ryozanpaku's duel school students, he tells the young entertainer that he's an admirer of his father Yusho's dueling style, hence the flamboyancy in his duels. Later becomes one of the top 8 Junior Youth participants. He's later revealed shortly afterwards to be a mole for the main antagonists of the series: Academia, working directly with Yuri and spying on the Lancers. During the Friendship Tournament in the Synchro Saga, Kurosaki exposes Dennis for not only what he really is but got him to shed more details on the fall of the Xyz Dimension and his role in Ruri's disappearance. Similar to Sora, Dennis is now considered an enemy to Yuya and friends, and he was expelled from the Lancers for his betrayal and forced to return to Academia.

He plays a balanced Entermage/Antique Gear hybrid deck, which fully brings out the potential of Pendulum, Xyz and Fusion Summoning.
----
!!!Tropes associated with Dennis:
* AffablyEvil: It's hard to tell just how much that goofy Broadway showman personality is a front, but while pretending to be a friend of the Lancers, he's pretty good at faking it. Dennis genuinely does love his Entertainment persona but is willing to set it aside for his mission, no matter how melancholy he becomes.
* AncientGrome: Along with ClockPunk. After his true colors are revealed, he starts playing Antique Gear monsters.
* AnimeAccentAbsence: He and Olga don't speak with an accent like Halil.
* ArchEnemy: Similar to Sora, Dennis now considers Kurosaki this, since an already hostile rivalry between the two has devolved into outright hate for one another when Dennis' identity has been revealed thanks to the Xyz rebel. For exposing his mission, Dennis intends to ''fully'' pay back Kurosaki for tearing off his "mask". Unfortunately for him, he fails...'''hard'''.
** The same is true in reverse, though Kurosaki most likely considers Dennis more of an ArchEnemy than Sora since Sora is just an arrogant hyped up kid who wants to prove his worth; [[ItsPersonal Dennis actually orchestrated Ruri's kidnapping and fall of his dimension.]] And while Kurosaki was indifferent about Reiji having him spare Sora, he was beyond pissed when he stopped him from carding Dennis.
* {{Badass}}: He's immediately introduced as a better entertainer than Yuya, and a better Duelist than Yuzu. In all his Duels thus far, he seems to be toying with his opponents and always maintains control. The Synchro Dimension has him up on more equal footing though.
* BadassBiker: Becomes one in Episode 58, alongside Kurosaki.
* BaitTheDog: It looks like he will be the Johan to Yuya's Judai, as a kindred spirit with similar mannerisms and views on life. Then he turns out to be TheMole.
* BeautyMark: Under his right eye.
* BecomingTheMask: He admits that he really loves being an entertainer in Episode 75, and unlike Sora, his true persona isn't very different from his false identity. [[{{Deconstruction}} This does not stop him from sticking with Academia and committing heinous crimes.]]
* BeneathTheMask: Underneath the wacky entertainer appearance is a sadistic Duel Soldier. Invoked by Entermage Trapeze Magician's destruction, where the mask is the last piece to fall...and he is exposed.
* BewareTheSillyOnes: Beneath Dennis's goofy demeanor is a genuinely skilled Duelist. Plus, he's TheMole and he greenlit the invasion on the Xyz Dimension.
* BigBadFriend: Though the audience at home already knew his allegiance, his outing as an Academia spy comes as a huge shock to all the Lancers. Yuya and Yuzu are especially horrified, though Kurosaki had his suspicions since their first duel and Reiji [[CrazyPrepared wasn't surprised that a spy somehow managed to make it on their team]].
* BigDamnHeroes: He joins Yuya's duel against Takeda and Umesugi by saving Yuya. He receives 2000 damage as a penalty because he wasn't part of the duel yet when Takeda's Fuujin was about to inflict effect damage to Yuya. Sadly he only did this to get into Yuya's good graces; his actual personality is pretty rotten.
* BirdsOfAFeather: He's also an Entertainer duelist and idolizes Yusho Sasaki and his style. This helps him to connect with Yuya and show him how to overcome his fear towards Dark Rebellion Xyz Dragon by showing him how to use it to give a great show. This personality is a front he put up in order to get Yuya to trust him.
* BishieSparkle: Sparkles are all over him and his monsters for the sake of being flashy.
* BitchInSheepsClothing: He's introduced as a kind and silly character, but that was an act to find Yuzu for Yuri. This is shown clearly in Episode 47 where he pretends to help Yuya and Gongenzaka find Yuzu, when he's really leading them into a trap.
* BreakTheHaughty: For all his smug taunts on Kurosaki on how he befriended Ruri and had her kidnapped, Kurosaki pays him back by blasting him all the way from orbit with Satellite Cannon Falcon. That shut him up pretty effectively.
* CallBack: Yuya notes that the duel taking place between Dennis and Kurosaki in the Synchro Dimension has similar traits to the duel between Sora and Kurosaki in the Standard Dimension: a duel taking place in a tournament like setting that starts innocently enough, but then devolves into violence and hate, complete with shocking revelations about the "friendly" duelist.
* CastingAShadow: Entermage Shadow Maker is a DARK monster. As is his Antique Gear Chaos Giant.
* {{Catchphrase}}: "The show must go on!" After being exposed, he falls back to what the Academia students love saying: "Let's begin the hunting game!"
* ChickMagnet: He has admirers in the Synchro Dimension,... and [[CrowningMomentOfFunny Yuya's Mother]].
* CircusOfFear: Although his Entermages look nice, him being evil makes it this.
* ColorFailure: Subject to this after face planting as a result of his penalty for helping Yuya, and for drawing Polymerization.
* CoverIdentityAnomaly: Downplayed, he didn't knew that Reiji was able to use all Summoning Types and as [[ButtMonkey Sawatari]] of all people points out, this is common knowledge for LDS Students but doesn't comment on it any further, possibly justified in that he probably didn't plan on staying too long on Standard, only until he could confirm that Yuzu had been successfully abducted by Yuri, and later to try retrieve [[SpannerintheWorks Serena]] himself.
* CyberCyclops: His true ace monster, Antique Gear Chaos Giant, sports a very Zaku-like glowing mono-eye.
* DarkIsEvil: Dennis is a mole from Academia, and his true ace is the DARK attribute Antique Gear Chaos Giant.
* DefeatMeansFriendship: He seems to think so, saying he and Yuzu are friends after he beats her. Subverted, because in reality he was just tracking her for Yuri.
* DishingOutDirt: His Antique Gear monsters are EARTH monsters, with the exception of Antique Gear Chaos Giant.
* DubNameChange: His "Entermage" monsters are called "Performage" in the English version. The same goes for his "Antique" Gear monsters, being called "Ancient" Gear.
* EvenEvilHasStandards: Dennis got to know Ruri for a bit when he was posing as an Entertainer and thought it poor taste to attack her so soon. He left that up to Yuri...
* EvilAllAlong: He was always TheMole for Academia. PlayedForLaughs in his duel against Gongenzaka, where he switches from the role of {{Face}} to {{Heel}} because Gongenzaka didn't want to be the villain.
* EvilRedhead: See his image, and he's evil.
* EvilSorcerer: He uses the Entermage archetype, and is TheMole to Academia. Subverted in that, once he reveals his true colors, he drops the Entermages for Antique Gear monsters.
* EvilSoundsDeep: After being forced to reveal himself to Kurosaki, unlike Sora whose voice becomes higher and more deranged, complete with his [[NightmareFace leering smiles]], Dennis' voice drops a few octaves and he abandons his entertaining persona.
* {{Expy}}: Seems to be another one to [[Anime/YuGiOhGX Johan]], sharing some similarities with Yuya and both being in good terms with each other in a very short time. And [[Anime/YuGiOhZEXAL Shingetsu]], being a false Johan, even more so than Sora.
* FaceDeathWithDignity: When he thinks Kurosaki is about to card him, Dennis simply lies on the ground, saying nothing.
* FashionableAsymmetry: Wears a glove on one hand and is missing a sleeve on the other.
* {{Foil}}:
** He's one to fellow Lancer, Tsukikage. Dennis is a flashy mole who hides his vicious personality with kindness and smiles. While Tsukikage is a silent stoic that is absolutely loyal to his mission and is benevolent. They are both much more plot important than expected.
** He's also one to Yuya. Both are entertainers and have "Enter-"/[[DubNameChange "Performa-"]] decks. While Yuya's entertainer personality is an act, Dennis is a mole and is probably acting the whole time. Also he has a strong connection to Trapeze Magician, not unlike the one Yuya has with Odd-Eyes. Noticeably in his second duel with Kurosaki, Trapeze actually reached for an action card for Dennis and Dennis gave a SayMyName for the card when it was destroyed not unlike what Yuya does when Odd-Eyes was destroyed by Sora in their first duel.
** In addition, he's actually one to fellow Fusion Dimension duelist Sora. The two are initially presented as similar, being friends with the main cast with an affinity for entertainment, who then turn out to be associated with Academia. The primary difference is that Sora revels in the pain that he causes and hid his true personality, in addition to having MASSIVE {{Pride}} issues, while Dennis is not only "nicer" overall and genuinely regrets doing what he has to do (though it won't prevent him from doing it), he is far more humble, notably accepting his loss to Kurosaki when Sora turned into a blubbering mess after both went through an arguably similar VillainousBreakdown. A second point of difference is how well they mentally internalize their statuses as moles. [[spoiler:Both Dennis and Sora are showing signs of ForcedIntoEvil, but while Dennis shows no signs of revolting despite having spent an undetermined amount of time in the Xyz Dimension compared to Sora who's spent at best a few months in Standard, but is willing to defect from the Academia to protect Yuya and Yuzu.]]
* ForTheEvulz: Dennis' true ace monster Antique Gear Chaos Giant takes its sweet time destroying Kurosaki's Revolution Falcon, grabbing it in its claws and tossing/slamming it against the arena, eventually ''tearing its wing off''. When the falcon finally disappears, a good section of the track and wall are now in ruins.
* GracefulLoser: After Kurosaki beats him, he simply says that Kurosaki won, and does not beg for another duel like [[SoreLoser Sora did]].]
* GratuitousEnglish: He has a tendency to add English to his speech. Like Halil's, it is not [[SurprisinglyGoodEnglish bad]]. However, unlike Halil, Dennis does not pronounce the monsters' names in English, but with a Japanese accent.
* HarmlessElectrocution: He suffers this in Episode 43 as a penalty when helped Yuya.
* HiddenDepths: After initially seeming to just be a goofy and friendly entertainer, he's revealed as a mole for Academia and is much more intelligent and sinister than he lets on.
* HoistByHisOwnPetard: The devastation caused to the arena by his Antique Gear Chaos Giant, as well as the resultant debris, caused him to miss two Action Cards, leading to his defeat.
* JapanesePronouns: He uses the male pronoun ''boku''.
** Uses the villainous ''wagahai'' when acting as the {{Heel}} during a street performance.
* {{Keet}}: In a different vein than Halil. He's not overcheerful, but rather overdramatic, and likes to perform acrobatic stunts with his monsters.
* KickThemWhileTheyreDown: Has this trope nearly applied to him by Kurosaki after Dennis loses to the Xyz rebel. Injured and defeated, he was about to be sealed away into a card if not for Reiji altering Kurosaki's Duel Disk. Instead, Kurosaki settles for beating the living crap out of him but was stopped by Security before he could land a punch.
* LargeHam: ''Oh boy''. He's even more dramatic and over-the-top than ''Yuya's Entertainer persona''. Justified in that his cover is his own Entertainer Persona, and he's somewhat less hammy when using his true persona.
* LightIsNotGood: While the Entermages vary in attribute, his Xyz ace, Entermage Trapeze Magician is LIGHT-attribute, and he is TheMole. Later abandons the light when he starts using the EARTH-Attribute Antique Gear monsters.
* LoudGulp: In Episode 50, he gives one (either out of fear or awe) when he was told (and watched himself) that [[TheAce Reiji]] specialized in all types of Summon (Fusion, Synchro, Xyz and Pendulum).
* TheMole: In reality, he's an agent of Academia, particularly Yuri, and is only pretending to be friendly to Yuya and company to better let their guard down; he's just as bad as his companions. Episode 75 reveals he was this in the Xyz dimension as well, pretending to be a street magician while he was looking for Ruri.
* MonsterClown: His Entermages are a combo of this and StageMagician, since he is actually evil.
* MonstrousHumanoid: Dennis' true ace monster is not some silly creepy Xyz clown but a ''giant, horrifying mechanized Fusion abomination''. The fact that it looks humanoid makes it worse since its joints are made up of Antique Gear Hound ''heads''.
* MoralityPet: Trapeze Magician. When Kurosaki destroys it in battle, he is visibly crushed. He also seems to have a good relationship with it, not unlike Yuya and his Odd-Eyes.
* MulticoloredHair: Red on the front part of his hair, and brown/dark red on the back part of his hair.
* NegatedMomentOfAwesome: Downplayed; his BigDamnHero moment was cool, but the 2000 life point penalty detracts from the awesomeness.
* NiceGuy: He willingly decided to help Yuya in the 2 vs 1 duel, and treated Yuzu with a great deal of respect during their Duel, including teaching her some tactics. Subverted in that it's all an act.
* NiceHat: Pulls a top hat out of nowhere to be a StageMagician.
* NoSell: The Entermages do this to effect damage. Trapeze Magician can negate both effect damage and battle damage lower than its ATK.
* ObfuscatingStupidity: He pretended to be a silly foreigner to get info about Yuya and Yuzu. He actively pretends to be ignorant of the interdimensional war.
* OhCrap: He gets one in Episode 50 when faced with the possibility that his status as TheMole may have been blown, and that there may be witnesses of him talking to Yuri, or of the later taking Yuzu thanks to Reiji's SinisterSurveillance.
** He gets another one in episode 53 after Serena forces Reiji to reveal that Yuri didn't take Yuzu to Academia, and instead disappeared with Yugo.
** Gets his biggest one when Satellite Cannon Falcon is summoned before him, and it gets even more worse when he realizes his own monster is stopping him from reaching for Action Cards and that he is unable to prevent his defeat.
* PragmaticVillainy: He uses Xyz monsters instead of Fusion, since his cover would be blown if he did. Notable since most Fusion Dimension agents look down on Xyz users. That being said, he seems to genuinely enjoy using his Trapeze Magician.
* PutOnABus: Sora sends a reluctant Dennis home to Academia due the injures he sustained from his duel with Kurosaki, and because to prevent Dennis from contunuing to spy on Serena. Dennis is not even seen once during the fourth opening/ending.
* RealityEnsues: When you splash a secondary engine in that supports a different deck entirely, you're going to draw a card that you ''really'' don't want to see at the moment on a few occasions.
* RegretfulTraitor: He claims that he didn't want to stop being an Entertainer back in Heartland, but given that he found [[MacguffinGirl Ruri]], he had no [[TrappedInVillainy choice but]] [[JustFollowingOrders to greenlight the invasion]].
* ShipTease:
** Maybe it was just an act, but there's plenty of it in his duel against Yuzu; from him introducing himself to her while [[NoSenseOfPersonalSpace getting really close]] and offering her a rose, to the end of the duel when he saved her, all while talking suave to her.
** Turns out it was an act, since his actions in episode 62 mirrors his actions in the flashback during episode 75. He flirts with the target he's trying to capture to gain their trust then points them out to Yuri when they are vulnerable.
* SlasherSmile: He had one in Episode 45 during his duel with Serena. Later he has a few internal ones as he goes about spying on Yuya and his friends. In Episode 74 and 75, Dennis starts letting more and more of these out after his cover has been blown by Kurosaki.
* SpellMyNameWithAnS: An official site gives us Dennis Mackfield while the English Dub uses [=McField=]. Fan spellings use the former and leave the K out.
* SpottingTheThread: Kurosaki notices something is up about him due to him being a little too good of a duelist for Standard, being more akin to a battle tested duelist.
* StageMagician: His Entermages and he himself, though a few are circus clowns.
* StreetPerformer: When he and Gongenzaka are separated from the others in the Synchro Dimension, he puts on shows for children, to try to make enough of a scene so the others find him. He was also this in the Xyz Dimension, which was how he met Ruri.
* SuicidalGotcha: He did this in Episode 43 as part of his performance while dueling. He does it again in Episode 44 to save Yuzu from falling.
* SurprisinglyGoodEnglish: His [[Creator/TetsuyaKakihara seiyuu]] speaks fluent English, so Dennis's English is anything but bad.
* TermsOfEndangerment: Refers to Gongenzaka as Gon-chan, just like Sora did.
* ThisCannotBe: When Kurosaki summons his Satellite Cannon Falcon and weakens Antique Gear Chaos Giant enough for him to destroy it, Dennis' attempts to get an Action Card to save himself are denied every time, leading him into his breakdown below.
* TookALevelInJerkass: With his identity revealed to the world, he drops the nice guy act and reveals his true personality: a psychotic soldier who revels in the despair of his victims. In Episode 75, he's taunting Kurosaki relentlessly, saying that if he had more resolve and power, his dimension would still be in one piece. He then actually reveals to be the one who called in the invasion force for the Xyz dimension in the first place and had a hand in Ruri's capture.
* VillainousBreakdown: As his second duel with Kurosaki reaches its climax, Dennis enters a breakdown similar to Sora's; his ace monster is about to be destroyed and no matter what he does to prevent it, fate itself seemed to interrupt Dennis' efforts.
--> '''Dennis''' (Trying and failing to get an Action Card) "Damn it! I already threw away my Entertainer persona, and now the Action Cards are abandoning me as well!?"
** Though after he's on the ground, he simply accepts the defeat instead of begging for another duel.
* VillainousRescue: See BigDamnHeroes above.
* WalkingSpoiler: His status as TheMole makes it hard to speak about his role in the series at length, since it adds an extra layer to everything known about him. And the fact that his cover is blown apart and what role he played during his time in Heartland. And his Antique Gear monsters.
* WhamEpisode: Episode 75 is quite a doozy: in a flashback, Dennis reveals that he infiltrated the Xyz Dimension before the invasion and was posing as an Entertainer. His real mission was to locate Ruri and once he found her, he contacted Academia and gave the go-ahead to invade the dimension. It was due to Dennis' actions that the dimension fell into hell in the first place. If that wasn't enough, he actually met up with Yuri and pointed out where Ruri was so he could go ahead and capture her. This situation most likely repeated itself in the Synchro Dimension for Rin (though an invasion wasn't called in) and most definitely happened in the Standard Dimension for Yuzu (though this time Yuri failed to get his target).
* WhamShot: A few of them. ''Two of them in quick succession.''
** Episode 45: Dennis, who is from the Xyz Summon Course, has ''Polymerization'' in his Deck.
** Episode 46: He welcomes ''Yuri'' to the Standard Dimension.
** Episode 74: InUniverse, when he shows Polymerization in his hand to Kurosaki. This reveal gets blown out of the water a few moments later when he sends it to his Graveyard to activate an ''Antique Gear'' Fusion card that lets him Summon multiple Antique Gear Hounds, up to and including what was previously considered the Hounds' ace, Ultimate Bite Hound Dog. But a few moments later, Dennis summons the ''real'' ace: Antique Gear Chaos Giant, a ''Level 10, 4500 ATK '''behemoth''''' of a monster.
* WorfEffect: In Episode 45, he loses against Serena to show how powerful and hellbent she is.
** WorfHadTheFlu: It turns out that the only reason he lost was to ensure that he did not blow his cover as an agent of Academia; Dennis deliberately did not go through with Xyz summoning and despite getting lousy cards at the start, Dennis looked as though he had a backup plan to turn the duel around but was distracted by the arrival of the Obelisk Force, thus preventing himself from stopping Serena's direct attack.
* WorthyOpponent:
** He respects Yuya because he respects Yusho and has the same dueling style. He feels the same way towards Yuzu. Later found to be a lie, as he works for Academia, and they are known to look down on ''everyone''.
** Shockingly enough, admits defeat after Kurosaki beats him.

[[folder:Edo Phoenix (Aster Phoenix)]]
!!Edo Phoenix (Aster Phoenix)
!!!Voiced: by: Creator/AkiraIshida
[[quoteright:203:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/fulledphoenix.png]]

An alternate counterpart to Edo Phoenix from ''Anime/YuGiOhGX''. He is the Commander-in-Chief of Academia's military forces. He uses a Destiny HERO deck and he also uses Fusion Monsters.
----
!!!Tropes associated with Edo:
* TheAce: There's a reason why he's the commanding officer of Academia.
* AdaptationalVillainy: In ''GX'', he could be a {{Jerkass}} sometimes, but Edo was an AntiHero. Here, he's a flat-out villain who commands the military forces of Academia.
* {{Badass}}: On the same level as ''Yuri''.
* BadassInANiceSuit: He wears his trademark suit from ''GX'', but the majority of it is covered by his BadassLongRobe.
* BadassLongRobe: Wears an intimidating one over his suit to reinforce his reputation as Academia's Commander-in-Chief.
* DarkIsEvil: Like his ''GX'' counterpart, he uses Destiny [=HEROes=]. Unlike his ''GX'' counterpart, he's a full-fledged villain.
* EvilHero: Uses a Destiny HERO deck like the original, and Academia believes that they are the good guys.
* FourStarBadass: He certainly didn't make it to the top of Academia's chain of command through lack of talent.
* TheResenter: [[spoiler:For some reason, Edo harbors an intense resentment towards Yusho and challenges Yuya to a Duel in Episode 104's summary because he's Yusho's son. Given the EnemyCivilWar, there's probably a good reason for that.]]
* SpellMyNameWithAnS: Edo or Ed.

[[folder:Obelisk Force]]
!!Obelisk Force
The Obelisk Force are an elite group of Duel Soldiers of Academia. They often duel in tag, using the advantages and loopholes of the Battle Royale Mode and take down their opponents with teamwork and burn damage.

All of them seem to run Antique Gear decks, particularly based on the Antique Gear Hound Dog archetype.
----
!!!Tropes associated with the Obelisk Force:
* AncientGrome and ClockPunk: Like many other Duel Soldiers, they use cards such as Antique Gear Knight and Antique Gear Hound Dog.
* {{Combat Pragmatist}}s: They duel in Battle Royal Mode rather than in regular 1-on-1 duel. Since the Battle Royals don't have specific rules, they attack their opponents before those even get their first turn.
* DangerouslyGenreSavvy: So the Obelisk Force are on a mission to retrieve Serena, a duelist widely considered to be dangerous and powerful. So they study her deck which she built in their home the Academia, lowering her threat.
** Later when they identify Sora as a traitor, one of the mooks has their Antique Gear Hound Dog bite down on his Duel Disk, preventing Sora from moving and/or summoning monsters to interfere in Barret's duel with Yuya.
* EliteMooks: Played with. They are built up as a threat, and their invasion of Standard involves them defeating and carding many duelists. However, especially in Season 2, they're ineffectual against stronger professional duelists, making their threat level seem lower.
* ExpressiveMask: Downplayed, their mouths are visible anyway, but the red lenses in the eyes move in ways they should not be able to.
* FacelessGoons: They all wear masks. The gems on the masks are colored differently.
* HoistByHisOwnPetard: Yugo wipes a trio of them out by dealing damage to them with their own cards.
* JapanesePronouns: They all use Ore.
* {{Jerkass}}: So far, every single one of them.
* KnowWhenToFoldThem: Three of them in episode 92 decide to retreat after [[spoiler:the four Yus almost merged, Yuri and Barrett are gone, and Tsukikage nearly stabbed them with his sword]].
* LoweredMonsterDifficulty: The first time these guys showed up, a lot of people got [[AndIMustScream carded]]. After that, the heroes started mopping the floor with them.[[note]]Admittedly the only characters that dueled them both times were Yuya (who curbstomped them both times) and Tsukikage (who almost lost both times); the other two the second time were Sergey and Reira who are easily some of the strongest duelists in the series.[[/note]]
* {{Mooks}}: All of them wearing the same uniforms, wear almost the same [[FacelessGoons masks]], all share the same personality, and all of them seem to run Antique Gear decks. Unfortunately, they are also EliteMooks.
* MythologyGag: As they are called Obelisk Force, their masks resemble the usual Duel Monsters version of Obelisk the Tormentor (The Millennium World version of him has a slightly different head design). The elite students of ''GX's'' Duel Academia were from the Obelisk Blue Dorm.
* PetTheDog: A rather literal example, one of them scratches his Ancient Gear Hound under the chin.
* RedEyesTakeWarning: The red lenses of their masks lend themselves to this effect.
* {{Sadist}}: They feel pleasure from hurting and carding people.
* SmugSmiler: All the time.
* SmugSuper: They can come off as SmugSnake, but they're technically this since they're actually good Duelists. The primary reason they did so poorly against Yuya was likely because it was three-on-one and they underestimated him.
* WouldHurtAChild: Their ages are unknown but they card several 13-15 year old characters from Junior Youth, [[spoiler:and show no mercy to Reira]].
* ZergRush: As mentioned in CombatPragmatist above, ganging up on opponents is pretty much their go-to strategy.

[[folder:Juvenile Officers]]
!!Juvenile Officers

A group employed by Academia, serving as a security force. They are introduced trying to capture Yuzu, and decimated by Asuka. They use the Armoredog archetype, attacking in three-man groups to overwhelm the opponent.
----
!!!Tropes associated with the Juvenile Officers:
* BlowYouAway: Armoredog Bull Copter is a WIND monster.
* BrokenStreak: The first {{Mooks}} to not be faceless, and the first unnamed Academia group to not use Ancient Gear decks.
* DishingOutDirt: Armoredog Cannon Boxer is an EARTH monster.
* {{Mooks}}: They aren't soldiers, simply officers.
* NiceHat: They wear berets.
* RightHandAttackDog: The Armoredog archetype is based of {{Robot Dog}}s.
* RobotDog: The Armoredog archetype consists of robotic dogs, similar to the Ancient Gear Hound Dog.

!You Show Duel School
[[folder:You Show Duel School (Fusion)]]
!!You Show Duel School

You Show is a preparatory Duel school located in City Fusion Dimension it is the alternate counterpart to You Show Duel School in Standard. Its current owner is Yusho Sakaki who opened this school when he came to the Fusion Dimension. Among its students are Asuka Tenjoin and, according to her, many students who escape from Academia decided to enroll in this school.
----
!!!Tropes associated with this branch:
* DefectorFromDecadence: Made up of all the Academia defectors that aren't Serena or Sora.
* WalkingSpoiler: It's very existence is this for where Yusho went.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Asuka Tenjoin (Alexis Rhodes)]]
!!Asuka Tenjoin (Alexis Rhodes)
!!!Voiced by: Creator/SanaeKobayashi
[[quoteright:165:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/fullalexisrhodesarcv.png]]

An alternate counterpart to Asuka Tenjoin from ''Anime/YuGiOhGX''. She uses a Cyber Girl deck that also includes the Cyber Angel Ritual Monsters.
----
!!!Tropes associated with Asuka:
* ActionGirl: Her ''GX'' counterpart was the first heroine to be a true Duelist.
* ArtEvolution: She looks much older in this series and wears a modified form of her Obelisk Blue uniform.
* {{Badass}}: The first thing she does is showing her jumping skills and One-Turn Three Killing three {{mooks}}.
* BigDamnHeroes: Her first act in Episodes 103 is saving Yuzu (who got dumped into the Fusion Dimension by a wormhole) from a group of Academia students and bringing her to the You Show Fusion branch.
* CompositeCharacter: Her ace monster Cyber Angel - Vishnu is an odd combination of Cyber Angel - Dakini (Asuka's ace monster in ''GX'') and Odd-Eyes Rebellion Dragon. Like Dakini, Vishnu is MultiArmedAndDangerous and Vishnu's effect is very similar to Odd-Eyes Rebellion's, both of them also having 3000 ATK to boot.
* InTheHood: Asuka is shown to be wearing a hood when she comes to Yuzu's aid.
* LightEmUp: Most of her monsters, and her Cyber Angels are LIGHT monsters.
* TheLastOfTheseIsNotLikeTheOthers: She's from the Fusion Dimension, and her ''GX'' counterpart is the "Queen of Obelisk Blue", but she's actually working for Yusho instead of Academia. She also uses Ritual Monsters.
* ManOfKryptonite: Cyber Angel - Vishnu is designed to destroy Fusion Monsters.
* MsFanservice: She's still a busty and shapely young lady wearing a miniskirt and sleeveless shirt.
* OneManArmy: Cyber Angel - Vishnu can practically defeat any pure Fusion Duelist, and her effect and ATK make sure that she defeats every single Fusion Duelist in one turn as long as they are not other factors that would prevent her from doing so.
* OurAngelsAreDifferent: The Cyber Angels are Fairy-Types, but they are Angel-Types in the OCG.
* ShesGotLegs: As before, she wears boots and a miniskirt that emphasize her long legs.
* TookALevelInBadass: Her ''GX'' counterpart was a bit infamous for running Cyber Girls, seen as a terrible archtype in the metagame, and she bordered on being a FauxActionGirl that lost most of her plot important duels. Here, Asuka's debut episode has her effortlessly OTK three Academia agents on her second turn.
