An angry Iceman seemingly almost killed his father in ''ComicBook/AstonishingXMen'' vol. 3 #64 (September, 2013), by giving him a heart attack. William was being his usually loveable self, upon starting the conversation with: "What… the big super hero making time in his busy schedule to lend his old man a hand shoveling snow?"

Consequently leaving his students fending for themselves and feeling emotional pain. He was part of the covert group ComicBook/TheIlluminati, and participated in their at best questionable decisions. All behind the back of his students. He covered up the death of the inexperienced X-Men Darwin, Petra, Sway, and Vulcan. He brainwashed Wolverine into joining the team. He knew that the Danger Room had become sentient and chose to keep it enslaved. He put a lot of effort in the so-called Xavier protocols, identifying the weaknesses of each student and devising plans to kill them if they cross him. He has also at times not hesitated to demote a number of X-Men while criticizing their perceived flaws. One of Comicbook/KittyPryde's most famous phrases summarizes well what all this means: "Professor Xavier Is a Jerk!"
* GuileHeroGuileHero: His intellect is his greatest weapon. Aside from being a telepath, he keeps secrets even from his own team, has faked his own death as a ruse, and has employed secret operatives for [[ShootTheDog when dogs need to be shot]].

** This gained Charles a WhatTheHellHero speech from ''the entire team'' when he decided to allow former foe (for former, read "they still considered her one") Rogue onto the team. It was only when Charles threw Storm's assessment of Wolverine (to wit: "he may be a psychopath, but there is good in him") back in her face and gave a PatrickStewartSpeech to the effect that he'd rather be stabbed in the back than stand by and spurn a suffering mutant that the X-Men backed down.

An extremely beautiful young woman with immense psychic potential. She was the center of attention throughout many of the X-Men's early adventures, being [[TheSmurfettePrinciple the only woman on the team]], and also one of the most potentially powerful. Eventually she settled into a relationship with Scott Summers; however, her burgeoning psychic potential along with some brain-washing caused her to develop an incredibly malevolent split personality with the power to destroy planets. She made a HeroicSacrifice during a moment of being in control of herself so that she wouldn't cause any more destruction. Eventually, that was {{Retcon}}ned into being a cosmic entity called the Phoenix Force taking Jean's form; this RetCon served to make it so that Jean wasn't a mass murderer. After ''that'' it gets [[ContinuitySnarl complicated]]; DependingOnTheWriter, the Phoenix wasn't even a little bit the real Jean, ''or'' a good chunk of the actual Jean's true self was within the Phoenix during that time, ''or'' we even pretend the original retcon never happened. What is indisputable is that she and the Phoenix are still connected after this, now and forever; under the right circumstances she ''could'' go back into full Phoenix mode; for good or ill, no one knows. Jean is also one of the strongest proponents of Xavier's dream, sometimes even more than Xavier himself. She actually prompted the original X-Men to form another team (the original X-Factor) after she came back. After [[HappilyMarried around 20 years of marriage to Scott]] (counting the time they spent in the future raising Cable), she got stuck in a [[AssPull contrived Limbo]] by those RunningTheAsylum, and is awaiting return (not because ''she'' always comes back, but because ''[[FirstLawOfResurrection every superhero does]]'').

* NeverLiveItDown: She ''was the TropeNamer'' when it was called "Jean Grey Escalation." [[folder:Professor Charles Francis Xavier / Professor X]]
!!'''Professor Charles Francis Xavier/Professor X'''

The original founder of the X-Men. An idealist who believes that humans and mutants can live together in peace. He's pragmatic about it, though, considering he essentially runs a combat school. Lost the use of his legs during a fight with an alien called Lucifer who was planning an AlienInvasion, got it back after an intimate encounter with [[FaceFullOfAlienWingWong the Brood]], was put back in his chair by the Shadow King, and is currently walking once again. Likes to keep secrets, thinking that redundant plans and safechecks are best for everyone, but this tends to bite him on the ass more often than not. Also tends to be obsessed about the cause to the detriment of his social life. Xavier is the world's most powerful telepath, being able to read and fully control the minds of large groups of people at a time.

The Ultimate version of Professor X is a lot more selfish, sarcastic, and more of a ManipulativeBastard.

* BadassGrandpa / CoolOldGuy: Sort of. During the 80's, he had to have his mind transplanted into a (somewhat younger) cloned body when his original body was the host to a parasitic Brood alien.
* BaldOfAwesome: Especially in the movies, where he's played by PatrickStewart.
* BigGood
* CainAndAbel: Has an evil twin sister (Cassandra Nova), had an evil stepbrother (Juggernaut, who had a HeelFaceTurn, and was actually called [[MeaningfulName Cain]]), an evil former best friend (Magneto), and an evil ''son'' (David "Legion" Haller, not actually evil but misguided with severe mental problems)!
* ChromeDomePsi
* CrazyPrepared: Professor X had at one point plans to be put into play in the event that any given X-Man executed a Face Heel Turn. For example, the plan for dealing with Wolverine was immolating his entire body, severing his head with a laser and sealing it in an adamantium safe.
** [[PopularityPower Of course, nowadays, all that would do to Wolverine is make him chuckle.]] The severing the head part, in particular, only applies when he doesn't have an indestructible adamantium skeleton.
** Oddly, almost every single X-Man ''has'' pulled a FaceHeelTurn at some point or another, though most of these have been MindControl, MoreThanMindControl, BrainwashedAndCrazy or DemonicPossession, or an AntiVillain turn of varying sorts. Still, something of a subversion given that none of them were ever used.
* DeusExitMachina: Professor Xavier also tends to suffer this fate as, at his full potential, he should be able to just sense and mindwipe any sentient problem that's heading the X-Men's way. Hence, most major threats in the X-Men comic books will begin with Xavier either disappearing, losing his powers, falling into a coma, turning evil, or otherwise being rendered useless for the rest of the story.
** Believe it or not, a lot of the early battles came down to the X-Men distracting the villain long enough for Professor X to get in range and defeat them with his mental bolts.
* EasilyForgiven: It does not matter how many times you've tried to kill him; if you claim repentance, he'll welcome you with open arms. Sometimes this works out really well, and sometimes... not.
** Not really that surprising, [[FridgeBrilliance considering he's a telepath, and therefore likely to know whether you're sincere about it or not.]]
** On the flip-side, in recent years ''he's'' been the one whose needed to be forgiven, as all sorts of revelations about how manipulative he has been over the years have come to light, to say nothing of the fact that he apparently had a crush on Jean Grey since she was 6. Cyclops and many members of the team have had trouble forgiving him. Another reason is general loss of faith as his dream of peaceful human-mutant co-existence seems to have gone down the crapper, and Cyke thinks a tougher policy than EasilyForgiven is in order. Thirdly, he himself broke this rule when he shot his EvilTwin Cassandra Nova dead; though she absolutely deserved it, it was mainly because of the threat she represented, and not (just) her previous genocidal actions.
* {{Fiction 500}}: The X-Mansion and related equipment comes from his inherited fortune, so he might be as rich as [[IronMan Tony Stark]]. Under GrantMorrison, he even headed an international MegaCorp to fund his team's heroism and projects.
* GeniusCripple / HandicappedBadass: For much of his history.
* GuileHero
* HotForStudent: In the earlier days, Xavier had a secret love for Jean, but feared she would never reciprocate because of his handicap. Later, it was revealed that he had a crush on her since she was ''six''.
* IdiotBall: Sometimes prone to this in the guise of HonorBeforeReason.
* InterspeciesRomance: More so than the average mutant, since his steady relationship is with the Empress of the Shi'ar, alien bird people with PsychicPowers.
* LaserGuidedAmnesia: He employs this much more often than MindRape.
* LighterAndSofter / TookALevelInKindness: His more [[ManipulativeBastard negative]] [[GoodIsNotNice traits]] are often downplayed in [[XMenTheAnimatedSeries most]] [[Film/XMen adaptations]], where he's a lot more noble and wise.
* LukeYouAreMyFather: David Haller
* MentorArchetype
* MindOverManners: He often prefers to "ask" before he reads your mind.
* MindRape: Although he's reluctant to use it.
* MissionControl
* OmniscientMoralityLicense: A lot of his actions come off as this. He does get called out on it eventually.
* PatrickStewartSpeech: While he ''is'' played by Patrick Stewart in the movies, he's been making these sort of speeches for years before the movies ever came out.
* PsychicPowers: One of the most powerful psychics in the franchise.
* TeamDad: Several of the X-Men view him as their father figure, specially Scott and Jean.
* TheAtoner: Lately in the comics Prof. X has been going around trying to make amends with various X-Men.
* YourMindMakesItReal; During "The Muir Island Saga", when Xavier battled the Shadow King on the astral plane, the Shadow King's attacked Xavier's legs, causing him to become crippled (once again) in the real world.
* WalkingTheEarth: Yes ''walking'' around the world trying to make up for his past mistakes.
* WeakButSkilled: Depending on the writer, Xavier may just be an average telepath at best who uses Cerebro to boost his powers to god-like levels, but no matter the writer, he's consistently the most experienced and skilled psychic in the Marvel Universe, so sometimes he becomes this. Other times he's powerful enough without Cerebro but still has mad skills, thus averting this.
* WeaksauceWeakness: Stairs.
* WhatTheHellHero: His habit of using his powers on people he cares about and keeping secrets often ends up biting him in the ass.
* WhoYouGonnaCall: If you have a victim who is seriously damaged by a psychic attack or any mutant powers such as what happened to [[ComicBook/MsMarvel Carol Danvers]] after she was attacked by Rogue with her power and mind stealing powers, Xavier is usually the only expert who can treat such casualties.

[[folder:Robert Louis "Bobby" Drake / Iceman]]
!!'''Robert Louis "Bobby" Drake/Iceman'''

Bobby Drake has the power to control moisture and temperature, as well as to transform his body into a living man made of ice, potentially making him one of the most powerful mutants in the world. This is belied by his incredibly deep insecurities, which hampers him both in his career as a superhero and in his personal life. Most of this stems from being raised by a critical, demanding, and mutant-hating father, who treated him shabbily ''before'' Bobby found out he was a mutant. It wasn't until he was possessed by Emma Frost that he started to realize just how much potential he really had. He tries to hide his insecurities by constantly attempting to get attention and recognition with a non-stop stream of verbal wise-assery.

* AnIcePerson
* AnIceSuit
* BewareTheNiceOnes: Similar to his bros SpiderMan and [[ComicBook/FantasticFour The Human Torch]], he's a pretty easygoing, goofball kind of guy for the most part. Make the mistake of screwing with his friends and teammates though, and you learn just how terrifying taking him on can be.
* CrazyJealousGuy: In regards to Polaris.
* DeadpanSnarker
* DidNotGetTheGirl: Every time it looks like he might finally end up with Polaris, she ends up going back to Havok. While serving with the Champions, Iceman fell for fellow member Darkstar. Who only viewed him as a friend. In the Defenders, he was in love with Cloud. The latter being a member with both a female and a male form. She/he had some feelings for Bobby, but was much more interested in Moondragon, another lady of the team. Most recently, he tried to get it on with Kitty Pryde, first stealing a big kiss from her after she broke up with Colossus and later going out on a date. In the end, both declared that they were both better off as friends and recently Kitty Pryde has gone back to Colossus despite his outlaw status.
* ElementalShapeshifter: In his earliest appearances, Iceman covered his body with snow, and eventually ice. He later learned how to convert his body into organic ice.
* FromASingleCell: Was once vaporised by a BrainwashedAndCrazy Northstar and Aurora and managed to reconstitute himself, before collapsing from the strain.
* FunPersonified
* HairTriggerTemper: When he was younger.
* HeterosexualLifePartners With Beast.
** Also with {{Spider-Man}} and the [[ComicBook/FantasticFour Human Torch]].
* TheLancer: In the earliest days, Bobby was loudmouthed, egotistical, and irreverent, and had a constant problem with Cyclops' leadership.
* KidAppealCharacter
* {{Jerkass}}: On occasion. Including the odd remark that the X-Men were better when there were just five of them.
* MistakenForGay: He's had quite a lot of HoYay moments, like having Northstar hit on him. Even appeared as a one-off gag on ''Family Guy''.
* NiceJobBreakingItHero: Lashed out at Thunderbird on the guy's first day, which didn't help with his already-present anger issues.
* OutOfFocus: Of the five original X-men, he gets by far the least focus.
* PhysicalGod: It's been revealed he has the ''potential'' to be this, as his powers have over the years been redefined from "shoots ice" to "ability to do literally ''anything'' so long as it involves water." This is rarely actually ''seen'', however, a notable exception being the first arc in ''Wolverine and the X-Men'' where he creates an army of clones to defend the school from villains... from the school's sprinkler system.
* SadClown
* StatusQuoIsGod: Frequently undergoes minor power-ups or character switches where he decides to take himself (and his work) more seriously. Generally, he's back to being an immature jokester with his standard powers in no time.
* {{Stripperiffic}}: Much like Beast, he rarely ever wears a shirt with his uniforms.
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: Ice cream, in the earliest days. Yes, it's an awful attempt at punning.
* TricksterArchetype
* UnderwearOfPower: Since he converts his body into organic ice, he has little need for clothing. His outfit usually consists of a pair of briefs and some boots.
* VitriolicBestBuds: with Beast.
* WellDoneSonGuy
* WhyCouldntYouBeDifferent: His parents aren't wild about Mutants.
* YouFightLikeACow

[[folder:Warren Kenneth Worthington III / Angel, Archangel]]
!!'''Warren Kenneth Worthington III/Angel, Archangel'''

A beautiful, somewhat conceited wealthy young man who has wings which allow him to fly. Initially one of the proudest members of the group, became more and more progressively useless when several other mutants were introduced who could fly, as well as do many other useful things. Once lost his wings in a fight, which caused him to do a FaceHeelTurn to get cybernetic replacement wings. Sometime after that, he developed regenerative blood which caused anyone touching it (foremost himself, obviously) to heal from any injury. Recently, this wasn't seen as quite enough, so Angel was upgraded to have the ability to switch at will between feathered Angel and evil, razor-winged Archangel forms.

* AmazingTechnicolorPopulation: Notably had blue skin for many years, even after he had lost the metallic wings.
* AmericanAccents: Prep. Well, it only lasted about two seconds, but for the first couple issues none of his speech bubbles were complete without calling someone "old man/boy/lad."
* AntiHero: Type V in Apocalypse-engineered mode.
* BettyAndVeronica: Veronica for Jean in the early days.
* BloodKnight in Apocalypse-engineered mode.
* ComboPlatterPowers: He's got enhanced strength and endurance, healing blood, flight...
* CrimefightingWithCash
* DoomedUpgrade: Superpowered version. Various writers continue trying to upgrade him beyond "lame old flight", but nobody can agree on what that upgrade should be, so his powers have gone through at least three major revamps.
* EvenTheGuysWantHim: Yes, he's THAT hot.
* FeatherFlechettes: In his Death/Archangel persona. Each flechette is tipped with a paralytic toxin that temporarily renders his victims immobile, physically "dead" and unable to access any conscious powers they may have.
* GoodWingsEvilWings: Angel has while feathery wings during his early incarnation. Later, he is grabbed by Apocalypse and experimented upon, and his wings become metallic and retractable.
* HealingFactor
* HeelFaceTurn: When his Death persona takes over and he becomes the successor to Apocalypse.
* IBelieveICanFly
* TheLancer: Full of himself, overconfident, and continued to contend with Scott for Jean long after Bobby and Hank lost interest.
* TheMedic: A grisly version, since he can use his {{blood|y murder}} to heal others.
* RazorWings: As Archangel.
* RichIdiotWithNoDayJob
* SociopathicHero[=/=]VillainProtagonist in Apocalypse-engineered mode.
* SuperpoweredEvilSide
* TheWorfEffect: It may seem absurd, considering that he was the weakest of all the X-Men, but back in the day when he wasn't QUITE so useless the first thing that would happen in most fights is that Angel would rush in and get his ass handed to him, after which he would either be totally taken out or have to retreat to be rescued by the others. In retrospective, his strength was somewhat justified in that one of the attempts to revamp his powers was to make him physically stronger due to his flight musculature.
* WhatKindOfLamePowerIsHeartAnyway: The utter redundance of "just flight" as a power in such a fully realized superhero universe has caused numerous attempts to revamp him into a more serious combat threat (though there was the time around 2000 when they tried to up his usefulness by just focusing him on rescue in hazardous areas and situations). The most common variant is, as Archangel, RazorWings, but he's also displayed the ability to launch feather projectiles in that form (exploding ones in the [[WesternAnimation/{{X-Men}} 90s animated series]] and [[FlechetteStorm razor-sharp ones]] in WesternAnimation/WolverineAndTheXMen).

[[folder: Dr. Henry Philip "Hank" McCoy / Beast]]
!!'''Dr. Henry Philip "Hank" [=McCoy=]/Beast'''

A brilliant scientist, athlete, and bibliophile, at first the only thing that indicated that Hank [=McCoy=] was a mutant were large hands and feet, and, later, an overall simian aesthetic. However, an experiment to enhance his already superhuman strength and agility transformed him into a blue-furred ape creature and later a blue lion man. Beast is a genius in genetics and biology and enjoys quoting Shakespeare. His even-handed and professorial attitude tend to keep the other members from panicking in situations. He's actually been in more teams than any other X-Man, having been a member of Comicbook/TheAvengers and the Defenders before; accordingly, being in the public eye as a member of the high-profile Avengers has made him one of the most accepted mutants by society at large.

* BewareTheNiceOnes: He's a very nice person, but push him too far and you WILL regret it.
* CatchPhrase: "Oh my stars and garters!" and "Violence is the last refuge of the incompetent" - usually [[HypocriticalHumor said right before he slugs someone.]]
* CharacterizationMarchesOn: He was originally written as a DumbMuscle, but the third issue abruptly changed his characterization to GeniusBruiser, and it stayed that way.
* ChickMagnet: At least before he took on a feline appearance (and after gaining his blue fur), quite a number of women displayed attraction for him, or at least when he was with the Avengers, as it was not a rare sight to see groups of women swooning over him.
* DeadpanSnarker
* EvilTwin: All the X-Men have evil twins. Beast is notable because his EvilTwin (known as the Dark Beast) has stuck around long-term, become a recurring villain, and even teamed up with Beast himself on occasion.
* [[{{Expy}} Expy]]: Beast is very similar to "Monk" Mayfair, sidekick of pro to-superhero DocSavage. This was most noticeable during the earliest comics.
* GeniusBruiser: Furry, huge, super strong and agile... and Nobel Prize level-smart.
* HeterosexualLifePartners: With Iceman, and later his Avengers teammate Wonder Man.
* LightningBruiser: Not only is Hank strong, but he's also stupidly fast and agile.
* MistakenForGay: His girlfriend once accused him of being gay... prompting him to admit to such in the media... despite not actually being gay. See, she gave him the idea that he could be a role model for mutants ''and'' gay people at the same time.
* PettingZooPeople: Originally he was basically a shaved gorilla, then became a blue gorilla with Wolverine hair, ''then'' he became a blue version of [[Disney/BeautyAndTheBeast the Beast]]. Much angsting ensued, most of it justified.
* PillarsOfMoralCharacter
* ProfessorGuineaPig
* PsychologistTeacher
* TechnoWizard
* SesquipedalianLoquaciousness
* SophisticatedAsHell: It's like a game for him, and it's his favorite one.
* {{Stripperiffic}}: Less likely to wear a shirt than Iggy Pop.
* TheSmartGuy: Although he was probably more TheBigGuy of the original team, since his intelligence was downplayed in those days.
* StatusQuoIsGod: Not as bad as the Hulk or the Thing, but he's never going to stay human-looking for long.
* UnderwearOfPower
* VitriolicBestBuds: With Iceman.
* WickedCultured: "Beast turns evil" is kind of a much more common scenario than you'd think. See Morrison's "Here Comes Tomorrow" arc for a quintessential one.

[[folder: Jean Grey / Marvel Girl, Phoenix, Dark Phoenix]]
!!'''Jean Grey/Marvel Girl, Phoenix, Dark Phoenix'''

* ActionGirl: What she became with time.
* ActionMom / TeamMom: Oddly enough Jean fits this despite never having actually carried a child. All her offspring are from alternate universes or timelines.
* AdaptationalWimp: In the 90s ''WesternAnimation/XMen'' series, she used her telekinesis about three or four times in the first two seasons, and had an unusual tendency to fall to a light punch.
* ApocalypseMaiden: Jean Grey as ''Dark Phoenix''.
* AscendToAHigherPlaneOfExistence: Currently in the White Hot Room, gathering fragments of the Phoenix Force.
* BadAss: Jean is highly capable of defending herself and others whenever the time calls for it.
* BackFromTheDead: Once.
* BareYourMidriff: In the comic ''New X-Men'', Jean was seen to be showing off her midriff often, like Emma Frost.
* BattleCouple: With Cyclops, of course.
* BettyAndVeronica: Had to choose between Angel and Cyclops, and later Cyclops and Wolverine.
** She's also the Betty for Cyclops while Emma Frost is the Veronica.
** She was also the Betty to Psylocke's Veronica for Cyclops' Archie.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: She's sweet, motherly and level-headed. Unless you wrong her or her loved ones seriously. Then, you're in for a ''world'' of psychic pain.
* TheChick: She started out as one, taking ''several'' levels in badass as her powers grew.
* ClingyJealousGirl: Jean is capable of getting very jealous, especially where Scott is concerned.
* ContinuitySnarl: The Phoenix Force with all the recent {{RetCon}}s.
* DeathActivatedSuperpower: Something the Phoenix Force seems to do. However, how this works is very much DependingOnTheWriter.
** ''[[MarvelVsCapcom3 "I can't control it!"]]''
* DeadpanSnarker: Jean as Phoenix can be quite witty and sarcastic when she wants to be.
* DroppedABridgeOnHim: Her Quesada-mandated death at the end of Planet X had "Magneto" kill her out of spite when he realized he was losing.
* [[ChickMagnet Dude Magnet]]: Jean is the object of affection for many male X-Men members, including Professor X himself for a brief period in the old days.
* EvilCostumeSwitch: When she becomes Dark Phoenix, the outfit turns red. In a more subtle version, as the ''normal'' Phoenix, the size of the phoenix logo slowly grew as time went on and she became more {{Anti Hero}}ish.
* FairytaleWeddingDress
* FieryRedhead
* FireWaterJuxtaposition: Used to contrast her with Emma when she becomes her romantic rival. Jean is constantly associated with fire and heat because of her red hair and her connection to the fiery Phoenix Force, and her personality is known to vacillate between warm compassion and unpredictable fiery temper; Emma is associated with ice and the cold because of her surname "Frost", her [[WomanInWhite all-white attire]] and her cool temperament, and she resembles an ice sculpture when in her organic diamond form.
* FormFittingWardrobe: Her Phoenix costume, X-Factor costumes, and 90s costume.
* GlowingEyesOfDoom: When she is possessed by the Phoenix Force.
* HappilyMarried: With Cyclops... for a while.
* TheHeart
* HeroesWantRedheads: Many of the X-Men have been attracted to the red-headed Jean, most notably Cyclops and Wolverine.
* HeroicSacrifice: Knew piloting that space shuttle would kill her, and she still went through with it.
* HighSchoolSweethearts: With Cyclops.
* HypnotizeThePrincess: Has been a victim of mind control several times.
* TheLancer: To Cyke in ''New X-Men''.
* LevitatingLotusPosition
* LittleBlackDress: Has worn a couple
* MessianicArchetype: What she has become with time, especially in and after GrantMorrison's run...
* MindRape: Jean does this to Emma after she catches Scott and Emma together.
* MindOverMatter
* MiniDressOfPower: Her second outfit.
* NeverLiveItDown: She ''was the TropeNamer'' when it was called "Jean Grey Escalation." However, people kept proving the point by adding examples about resurrection/new power/etc. Basically, a lot of casual fans - and even the writers these days - forget that (a) she has ''not'' died and come back ten trillion times, and (b) the Dark Phoenix Saga is ''not'' the only story she's ever been in.
* ThePhoenix: Well...
* PillarsOfMoralCharacter: Other than the DependingOnTheWriter bouts of madness with the Phoenix Force, she can be a pretty decent person for the most part. She is usually presented as one of the more compassionate members of the X-Men as seen when she helped raise Cable to be more of a good man than [[BadFuture he would have been]], and comforting Jubilee after Illyana dies.
* PlayingWithFire: Her Phoenix powers give her cosmic pyrokinesis, essentially magic fire.
* PowerStrainBlackout: Practically the poster child for this trope.
* PrettyInMink: Bought a white fur coat, and her mother has a brown mink coat.
* PsychicNosebleed
* PsychicPowers
** MindOverMatter
*** IBelieveICanFly: Using psychokinesis.
** {{Telepathy}}
*** MindlinkMates: With Cyclops.
* PunnyName: Perhaps merely by coincidence, Jean has mutant powers because she possesses the x-''gene''.
* RedHeadedHeroine
* RedheadInGreen: Some of her costumes have been green.
* RestrainingBolt: As a young girl, Xavier placed mental blocks in Jean's mind to keep her telepathy from growing out of control. Xavier would later remove these so her telepathy could grow naturally. In certain continuities, though, these mental blocks caused Jean to develop a dark alter ego; this rather than the Phoenix Force being a cosmic entity.
* SecretPublicIdentity: The name "[[FailOSuckyname Marvel Girl]]" didn't age well and was dropped decades ago, and (usually; DependingOnTheWriter) she only uses the name Phoenix when actually supercharged by the cosmic critter. This leaves her as just plain "Jean Grey" the majority of the time, even during action. It's been {{Lampshaded}} more than once; Jubilee once even referred to her as "Miss I'm Too Sexy For A Codename, Too Sexy For A Codename," and in the ''XMenEvolution'' tie in comic, when Nightcrawler asked why Rogue was just Rogue, Cyclops said "The same reason Jean's just Jean," and they were interrupted before Nightcrawler could get finished asking about ''that.''
* SignificantGreenEyedRedhead
* SimpleYetOpulent: Her dress when she arrives in the first issue wouldn't look to out of place among a high class party.
** Her wedding dress was also grand and simple.
* SuperpowerLottery: DependingOnTheWriter.
* ThighHighBoots: Phoenix costumes go right into the spandex this way.
* TheSmurfettePrinciple: Jean is the only girl of the original X-Men team.
* TrueBlueFemininity: Some of her outfits, especially the dress she wears in her very first appearance.
* UnwantedHarem: She was the only girl in the group for years.
** She's also been the target of villain's affections, as well. Jason Wyngarde (Mastermind) wasn't above committing MindRape to get her to fall in love with him.
* WomanInWhite: As the White Phoenix of the Crown, the most powerful incarnation of the Phoenix.
