** Really, Magneto is the central driving antagonist for the entire franchise, even though he has shared the limelight with other, arguably worse villains in most appearances (see BigBadEnsemble). His tendencies to let his ideology and destructive impulses cloud his judgement lead to many situations going FromBadToWorse.

Charles is the only one in the original trilogy to call him "Erik". Per his ideology, Magneto places a high value on "mutant names" over given names and encourages his acolytes to form their own superpower-centred identities. Amusingly enough, he was appalled when Raven first came up with the name Magneto, but later came to embrace it.

* TheCorrupter: Although he convinces Raven to accept her mutant appearance, he also pushes her into committing murder against human enemies and truly becoming Mystique. Charles believes Erik is a large influence for Raven leaving him.

*** ** Though they share a less personal rivalry, with Magneto viewing him as little more than a persistently stubborn nuisance, Wolverine also serves as an effective foil. Beyond the obvious opposition of "man who controls metal vs. man with bones covered in metal", Logan and Erik were both conditioned by evil men to believe they were nothing more than weapons, and both rebelled. Whereas Logan was ultimately able to walk away from his tormentor (Stryker), Erik couldn't let go of his grudge against Shaw, even while admitting that he agreed with Shaw's philosophy. In ''DOFP'', Wolverine and the younger Magneto are violent individuals who love Xavier, but whereas JerkWithAHeartOfGold Logan possesses UndyingLoyalty towards Charles, JerkWithAHeartOfJerk Erik is quick to [[spoiler:[[ChronicBackstabbingDisorder betray]] him]], until he finally does the reverse and pulls a HeelFaceTurn in ''Film/XMenApocalypse''.

* AGodAmI: For all his good qualities, Magneto is held back by his own considerable God complex and his entitled belief that mutants ''deserve'' to rule Earth because they are fundamentally superior to humans. He indirectly compares himself to God during his rant to Senator Kelly, and later appeals to Pyro's ego by comparing mutants to gods among insects.

Charles felt the genuine good within Erik when they first met, but that goodness is too often clouded by pain, rage and ambition.

* WhenHeSmiles: Ever the stoic, we rarely see Erik smile with true happiness (beyond the [[SmugSmiler smug smirks]] his older self all too often flashes). Yet, Erik is positively giddy when Charles successfully motivates him to rotate a huge satellite dish, the largest metallic object he'd ever moved at that point. It helps that Charles unlocked happy childhood memories that Erik didn't know he still had.

* PersonOfMassDestruction: When he goes all-out, he is one of the most dangerous mutants in the film-series, as humanity loves building things (particularly weapons) out of metal. Across the saga he demonstrates the ability to redirect bullets and missiles, manipulate firearms and metal weapons without needing hand gestures, forcibly activate or shut down machines of industrial sizes, and levitate using a magnetic field. His most impressive feats include stopping a crashing Blackbird, lifting the Golden Gate Bridge and floating it down-river to Alcatraz, and ripping an entire stadium off its foundations and floating it to the White House to create a barricade. In ''Apocalypse'' he's on the verge of destroying the entire planet (as one character puts it, "destroying everything built since the Bronze Age") while maintaining an impenetrable forcefield around himself, and it's strongly implied that unlike his other followers, Apocalypse didn't actually enhance Magneto's mutation, he just showed him how to unlock its full potential.

* PhysicalGod: While always immensely powerful, he becomes this in ''Film/XMenApocalypse'', being on the verge of tearing apart the planet (as one character puts it, "destroying everything built since the Bronze Age") while maintaining an impenetrable forcefield. Moreover, Charles implies that unlike the other Horsemen, Apocalypse didn't actually enhance him, he just tapped into his rage and pain, meaning that he had this potential all along.
