* LoveMartyr: Despite how cruel and abusive Tsukasa is to him and others, Hanako does care about his younger brother deep down. [[spoiler:The fact that Tsukasa is his Yorishiro is proof of it. In fact, Hanako doesn't want Tsukasa to destroy all the Yorishiro, including himself, because he doesn't want to lose him forever and is very hurt by Tsukasa's indifference to his conflicted fraternal love.]]

* AmbiguousSituation: Tsukasa's identity is questionable from the get-go since the seal on his cheek looks exactly like a Yorishiro and Amane has the deepest emotional connection to him. Mystery No.6's Yorishiro being Sumire proves that it doesn't have to be an object. Then, with the reveal that a 4-year-old Tsukasa CameBackWrong after he made a DealWithTheDevil with the Red House deity, he may not even have been the real Tsukasa Yugi to begin with.

* DemonicPossession: As the price to let Amane live past four years old, Tsukasa made a DealWithTheDevil with an evil godlike entity, who possessed his body. Some of Tsukasa's original personality seems intact, but it's heavily implied that the influence of the demonic god inside him is what turned him evil.

* EvilCounterpart: To Hanako. They’re both ghosts granting wishes to the school’s population, but for opposite reasons. Hanako wishes to atone for his sins, while Tsukasa wants nothing more then to make everyone's life a [[AndIMustScream living hell]] for his own amusement.

* UsedToBeASweetKid: Tsukasa used to be a sweet-natured and selfless child who only wanted to cure his twin brother of his illness. To have his wish granted, he made a DealWithTheDevil and became the host of an evil godlike entity, turning him into the malevolent CreepyChild of today.

* AllGirlsWantBadBoys: Hakubo is cold, ruthless and dangerous, but Sumire still loves him because he was the only one who kept her company during her life. It's ultimately {{deconstructed|trope}} when Hakubo admits he does have strong feelings to Sumire... And then eats her alive in an attempt to free himself from his attachment to her.

* DissonantSerenity: She smiled serenely as she told her "husband" she wished her death would cause people to become mad with grief and go to hell.

* FaceDeathWithDignity: She calmly accepted her fate to be her village's HumanSacrifice and at the time of her death, she just sadly smiled as she wished Hakubo would at least pretend to be sad. Tragically, if Sumire had been less dignified about her death, Hakubo would have tried to save her.

* InLoveWithLove: A very sad case. Sumire was chosen as a HumanSacrifice at six years old, her parents abandoned her and all the villagers wanted her dead as soon as possible. Starved for connection and affection, she pretended her guard Hakubo was her husband even though he didn't know emotions, much less how to love someone. Having seen Sumire's memories, Nene is appalled at Hakubo's cold treatment of Sumire and [[LampshadeHanging points out]] Sumire only likes him because of her depressing upbringing at a village where everyone else hated her.
