* AmbiguouslyEvil: He may be a jerk, yes. But he interacted 'quite well' with Teverly when asked about a certain [=iPad=]. It puts into question about his level of evil and his relations with the Organization, so far it becomes unclear.

* BitchInSheepsClothing: He's sweet mannered and nice to Vicky, using words that endear her to him when Madam Soot Beng usually defaulted to being a strict EducationMama to her. However, in the face of his new lover, James immediately drops his nice attitude to Vicky and becomes more or less uncaring to his own daughter.
* TheBusCameBack: After only appearing in ''I Am a Teacher'' and flashbacks, James is back for a serious amount of screen time as one of the students in Night Class.
* TheCasanova: He's a playboy and serial cheater, and this was one of the reasons why Madam Soot Beng filed a divorce. Milly learned it the hard way in the end of ''I am a Teacher''.
* CharacterDevelopment: At first displayed as an antagonistic HateSink against Madam Soot Beng and deadbeat father to Vicky; James’ return in the Night Class sees his personality slightly shifting. While he’s still an overconfident ass who’s a bit insensitive to others, he’s also genuine in trying to atone for his mistakes against Vicky. Though, considering how severe his past abandonment was, it’s a long road for James since he still faces [[ReformedButRejected rejection.]]
* EveryoneHasStandards: In the 2nd episode of the Night Class, after his own argument with Vicky and failed attempt at re-bonding, Chelsea tries to cheer him up by explaining what she did to Debbie, including making her wear glasses and nerdy looks just so she'd look homely and less pretty than her mom. [[StunnedSilence James is completely silent in shock on this]]. Even if he's a deadbeat dad, he doesn't look like he'll impose that on Vicky.
* HeelFaceRevolvingDoor: At first, he's depicted as an uncaring and manipulative man towards his family, then he enrolled in night school and seems more genuine about reconciling with Vicky, while also acknowledging his past wrongdoings. ''And now'', [[spoiler:he's been appointed by Alan to be the new head of department and it seems he's back to being malicious]].
* InsufferableGenius: During night classes, he gives off this aura. He's smug and intolerable with his bragging about owning a company and the skills he acquired from it, but he really is that good. [[spoiler:He’s most likely overcompensating on how, at Vicky’s words, his own company is faltering ever since the events of ''I am a Teacher'', most likely due to somehow his infidelity coming to public.]]
* JerkassHasAPoint: While he really doesn't have the best interest of Vicky at heart, James certainly made a good point that these all stemmed from how much Madam Soot Beng invested in her {{Pride}} as a teacher that she's having a hard time after being fired from the academy. His mistake is not realizing that Soot Beng undergoes CharacterDevelopment to fix her issues while he doesn't (well, not until the night classes).
* ManipulativeBastard: Can be said that his sweet-talking with Vicky is to manipulate her to favor him more than Soot Beng (though he ended up revealing himself when Milly popped in). Even Soot Beng described him as 'manipulative' to a bank customer service.
* NotWhatItLooksLike: Debbie and Vicky walk in on James holding Debbie's mother from behind. He was helping her using the heimlich maneuver because she was choking on a cookie she made.
* PetTheDog: The latter Night School episodes show that James is trying to do good in spite of his sinful past and insensitive personality:
** He gives Jack valid advice about growing a spine and standing up to his domineering wife.
** He tries to save Chelsea from choking on her own cookie, although it leads to NotWhatItLooksLike moment when Vicky comes to the scene.
* RememberTheNewGuy: Despite Madam Soot Beng never telling her side of story to her students, [=JianHao=] immediately recognizes him as ‘Madam Soot Beng’s ex’ when he enters the night class. [[spoiler:Since Vicky says that his business was faltering, it’s most likely that his infidelity became known in public news, allowing everyone to know who he is.]]
* SympatheticPOV: His appearance in Night Class showcases the conflict between him and Madam Soot Beng from his side. There, James is portrayed as an estranged father who knew he made a big mistake in the past, [[InsufferableGenius still has his personality flaws]], and yet still tries to make up for it by reconciling with his daughter, even if he will face constant reminders of how horrible he was in the past.
* UsedToBeASweetKid: When James was in school, he was a normal, sweet and diligent boy that only had Soot Beng in his mind. Somewhere in the future, however, he changed into a shameless womanizer (and a show-off, as shown in the Night Class) that Soot Beng rightfully filed a divorce. It's still not known if he was already a womanizer when he flirted on Soot Beng.

Debbie's overbearing mother. While she cares for Debbie, she can be a little hypocritical, criticizing her for glowing up while using other tools to glow herself up while her daughter is stuck on nerd looks. She later attends the Night Class.

* AscendedExtra: Originally only appearing just sporadically as Debbie’s overbearing mother, Chelsea becomes a regular in the Night Class and quite likely entangled in James’ own subplot to reconcile with his daughter.
* BerserkButton: [[MaamShock Being called 'auntie']]. It's no mere shock, she also reacts badly to it.
* {{Hypocrite}}: She'll find every reasons so Debbie stays 'homely' and 'nerdy' despite her beauty if she drops the nerdy tropes off, but when Debbie's not looking, she would do her best to make sure she's not looking ugly, homely and nerdy.
* MsFanservice: She’s often seen with revealing sporty clothes because she likes to hit the gym in order to maintain her beauty. She’s trying to make sure Debbie does not follow her footsteps in the trope to protect her, although it may make her look like a {{Hypocrite}}.
* MyBelovedSmother: To Debbie. She's still being seen as an inspirative mother and Debbie tends to obey whatever overbearing demands she made. For the most part, as long as Debbie doesn't go out of line, Chelsea does prove that she loves her daughter.

* {{Salaryman}}: The typical collar worker in an unknown office. He often comes home late by default, but he goes home even more late just to avoid his wife.

* CharacterDevelopment: Thanks to the night class, he goes from mostly following Julian as the bully character into an exparasted son who still loves his family, but tends to get embarrassed at how old-fashioned his father and grandpa are, and he has issues in expressing it properly. He has yet to show traits of a ReformedBully despite all those, though.
* TheSlacker: Like most boys his age, he’d really prefer to slack off with internet things or playing games.

* TheHeart: He's practically the guy that keeps the quarrelsome Cameron and Michael glued together. When he [[RageQuit calls it quits from the group project]] because the two keeps quarreling in spite of his actual intention of bonding them by attending the Night Class together, eventually the two genuinely reconnects.

One of the main bully leader of Class [=B00B5=], he was the one that led his pack to antagonize on Trev for being a crybaby and an easy target. After the Class generally 'vanished', Julian returns as a member of Class [=T1T6=]. While it was unknown how the heist affected him, whether he got transferred back to [=B00B5=] or staying at [=T1T6=], it remains unknown, but Julian is back. Despite losing a majority of his fellow bully friends, he's at least close with a new student named Serge. He's still a jerk, though.

An innocent girl and member of Class [=B00B5=] and surprisingly not a part of any bullying clique. She's introduced as Diana's friend, but Diana quickly ditched and bullied her to secure a place in Jasmine's clique. They somehow made up later, though. She's also later revealed as Chloe's big sister.

* TheBusCameBack: Due to it being a class played by people outside Team Titan (the Night Owl Cinematics), it can be very hard for them to appear more consistently, so after the introduction of Class [=N4T1=], [[PutOnABus the class seemingly vanished.]] However, after the third exam at the end of Season 4, the class is back, but only two members remained in school, and only ''one'' member remained in the same class (Julian), the other one (Isabelle) got sent to another new class. In the end, only Julian truly returns to be a semi-recurring character.
