* AdaptationalVillainy: While Cintra seems to have prospered and remained secure under her rule, her reign also saw the purging of the elves and the subjugation of other southern territories. The establishment of this fact suggests Calanthe's (and by extension, Cintra's) imperialist expansion was known to most of the Continent. Thus, the invasion of Nilfgaard (and, by extension, the fall of her house) comes off less as a tragedy provoked by an ambitious, ascendant empire and more [[KickTheSonOfABitch a competing imperial power swallowing up Cintra]].

[[spoiler:This fact helps highlight that, when she appears in Ciri's hallucinations in the desert delivering her a cold TheReasonYouSuckSpeech, [[OutOfCharacterAlert this is clearly not the real her or her spirit]].]]

The King of the wealthy kingdom of Redania.

to:

The [[spoiler:former]] King of the wealthy kingdom of Redania.

* SlashedThroat: [[spoiler: How he [[CharacterDeath is killed]] under the all but stated commands of Philippa, using her own lover as the proxy to do the deed.

* YouHaveFailedMe: As he tells Dijkstra, The Thanned Coup was nothing but a catastrophic failure for the North and the fact that Redania was utterly outsmarted and outplayed by Nilfgaard was a failure on both Dijkstra and Philippa's part and one of them must have punished because of it. To his credit, despite normally being a UpperclassTwit he seems legtimently sorry that Dijkstra might be the one who suffers because of it.

* WellIntentionedExtremist: [[spoiler: He legitimately is a Northern patriot and every action he takes is done in order to stop the Nilfgaardian war of conquest. His utterly extreme and forceful action in order to achieve this make him a very difficult figure to trust and more often than not he comes as outright antagonistic when his mission in the long run is all for the good of The North.]]

to:

* UndyingLoyalty: To Redania as a whole. He's perfectly to cross [[KnightTemplar very dark moral lines]] in order to make sure the sovereignty of his country is not threatened in any way and as the last episode of Season 3 shows, [[spoiler: more than willing to die as a scapegoat in order to make sure the country as a whole does not loose face and is adamant in his service to his country even when working under an imbecilic king. Fortunately for him, Philippa had a [[TheKingslayer much darker]] [[TakeAThirdOption third option]] to his sacrifice and he's perfectly alive by the end of Season 3, free to continue his UndyingLoyalty.]]
