* TheDitz: Bonnie has a very flighty, shallow and flirty personality. Because of this, people, including all of her friends underestimate her and never take her too seriously.

As the series progresses however, Elena learns to become more selfless, generous and compassionate.

* [[{{Pride}} / Prideful Girl]]: Elena is known to be very vain and proud, especially at the very beginning of the series. Her pride is often her downfall and her stubbornness is associated with her pride.

* [[RedStringOfFate Red String Of Fate / Soulmate Theory / Silver Cord Principle]]: In this specific novel series, the equivalent of this ancient theory is the Soulmate Principle, which instead of a red string linking two destined lovers from pinky to pinky, a silver cord is used to link two destined lovers heart to heart. Elena is bound to Stefan by a silver cord, which links them together heart-to-heart or soul to soul. This implies that Elena and Stefan are destined soul mates and are each other's OneTrueLove. In Vampire Diaries mythology (also used in Secret Circle and Night World), the Soulmate Principle is described as follows:
** The Soulmate Principle is an ancient theory frequently used in most of L.J. Smith's trilogies and series, including the Night World series, The Secret Circle series and The Vampire Diaries series. It is the theory that two people who are true Soul mates are connected by a 'silver cord' only visible to the Soul mates themselves. Through the silver cord, the Soul mates can feel what each other are feeling if the person concentrates. The strength of the connection varies. Some Soul mates know instantly that something is amiss - or that they are connected to the other person - by a simple touch, a spark of electricity that travels from one to the other, but for some Soul mates it takes years to figure it out. Exchanging blood is one way for a person to find out they are Soul mates with someone else. Soul mates can enter each other's mind and see their memories, thoughts, and feelings. Thoughts and memories can be blocked, but it takes concentration. If the concentration lapse during the time that one person is in someone else's mind, the blocks will fall down to allow the other person to see everything. The whole Night World series is based on the Soulmate principle but it is also used in The Vampire Diaries and The Secret circle series. This is the idea that for everyone in the world, there is a Soulmate. You don't have to look like your Soulmate, act like them, be the same age as them; heck, you don't even have to like them, but from the moment you meet them, you know that you'll never be completely happy without them.

* {{Bishonen}}: Physically, Stefan is described as being extremely inhumanely beautiful and drop dead gorgeous with fine facial features. He is so physically attractive that he literally attracts every single female that he passes by in the beginning of the series. As opposed to his brother, Damon, Stefan is often described to be more boyish in appearance, almost possessing a "pretty boy" appearance.

* AlphaBitch: Before meeting Stefan, Elena fit this trope. Elena was known to be vain, selfish, spoiled and childish. She was also highly competitive and was known as the Queen at her high school. Elena would often be in competition with her former friend turned rival, Caroline for the title of Queen Bee at school in terms of social status and popularity.

* WhatIsThisFeeling: Elena, who was icy, vain, cold in the beginning, feels this indescribable feeling that she had never felt before when she meets Stefan. Stefan managed to have a significant impact on Elena and as a result, she ends up becoming a much more caring, selfless, compassionate person. SeeDefrostingIceQueen.

* SpoiledBrat/SpoiledSweet: Elena has a sense of entitlement and she gets everything she wants. She'll do anything and everything to get what she wants, no matter what it is.

* HandsomeDevil/HandsomeLech: Damon is so good looking but he's a sociopath at the same time. Unfortunately, his personality is the type to scare potential romantic suitors away.

* FemmeFatale/TheVamp: Becomes this later on after she goes crazy and evil.

* SpoiledSweet: Elena has a sense of entitlement and she gets everything she wants. She'll do anything and everything to get what she wants, no matter what it is.

* TheHero: Stefan is the male lead character of the entire novel series. He is the good, moral and benevolent brother between himself and Damon. He is seen to be the protector, leader and savior. He is opposite Elena, with Elena being [[TheHero The Heroine]] of the novel series.
** ByronicHero: Stefan could be seen as this trope, because he has an ultra dark past and has a generally pessimistic, cynical outlook on life, especially before he met Elena. Before the series began, Stefan had a very cynical view on his life as an immortal. He lived in the shadows and in the darkness, yearning to be accepted by humanity. Stefan could classify as this trope because of his deep, dark past and his all consuming guilt over his actions.
** HurtingHero: Stefan has been through a lot of pain, guilt and suffering over the course of his life due to his DarkAndTroubledPast.
** IdealHero: Stefan could also classify as this trope because he is the main romantic lead for the series heroine, Elena. Stefan is noble, courageous, chivalrous, romantic, gallant, brave and heroic; traits and qualities which are often found in an ideal romantic lead.
** TragicHero: Stefan fits this trope because he is an incredibly tragic figure who has endured much guilt, suffering and pain.
** HumbleHero: Despite Stefan being heroic, courageous and brave, he isn't cocky about it. He is very down to earth and incredibly humble. Stefan doesn't seem to be driven by the thirst for power and attention when he commits moral or heroic deeds.

* HandsomeDevil: Damon is so good looking but he's a sociopath at the same time.

* {{Ojou}}: During Katherine's human life, she was seen to be polite, lady like and proper. She came from a wealthy, elite family since her father, Baron, was a successful businessman from Germany.

* ProperLady: Katherine used to be polite and docile.

* HonorBeforeReason: No matter how dark or cynical a situation is, Stefan always chooses to do the right thing no matter what. He sticks by his morals and he never wavers.

* FoolishSiblingResponsibleSibling: Damon is the Foolish Sibling to Stefan's Responsible Sibling. Stefan is responsible, logical and dutiful and Damon is reckless, impulsive and rebellious.

* LikeFatherLikeSon: Inherited many of his father, Giuseppe's personality traits, namely Giuseppe's temper.

* HairOfGoldHeartOfGold: Elena has long, pale blonde hair and there is much emphasis on her hair and it's colour in the novel series. Despite her occasional shallowness, she's actually a kind, compassionate, young girl who's often described as being pure, innocent and virginal.
