** When Vito's son, Vito Jr., engages in rebellious behavior and criminal misconduct out of spite towards his family, Phil isn't wrong to tell the kid that his actions are helping no one, and tries to tell the kid to "be a man" for the sake of his mother, now a widow. However, his lack of sympathy towards the kid prevents any real connection with Vito Jr., and ends up being more of an abrasive lecture than the "pep talk" he wanted it to be

* HomophobicHateCrime: [[spoiler:He tortures and kills Vito, then rams a cue ball up his anus, for being gay (more specifically because Vito was married to a cousin, so in Phil's eyes this sullied his family's honor). While Vito is a murderous and cold-blooded mafioso himself, the violence of his death and the sheer pettiness mark Phil as utterly vile.]]

* MoralMyopia: He's butchered more people in horrible ways than you'd care to count. This doesn't give him any perspective when Tony Blundetto kills his brother Billy in the middle of the [[MobWar Lupertazzi war]] after the brothers assassinate Angelo Garepe.

* MoralMyopia: He's butchered more people in horrible ways than you'd care to count. This doesn't give him any perspective when Tony Blundetto kills his brother Billy in the middle of the [[MobWar Lupertazzi war]] after the brothers assassinate Angelo Garepe. Indeed, in later conversations he says that Tony B killed his brother with zero provocation.
* MurderIsTheBestSolution: He tends to choose extreme violence as the answer towards any issue more quickly than any other mobster. When Little Carmine and Tony make an attempt to have Tony apologize for beating up one of Phil's men, not only does he refuse the apology, he refuses to even ''see'' them, tricking them into coming over for a meeting just to have an underling show them off at the door, and then scream at them from a window as they're leaving, implying terrible vengeance coming Tony's way.

Added DiffLines:

* ContemptCrossfire: Phil obviously hates Doc for whacking his personally handpicked successor, the other Lupertazzi captains already have a low opinion of Doc due to his slimy personality, and he also earns the ire of the [=DiMeo=] family members due to using Silvio has a distraction for Gerry's whacking (Silvio was so close that Gerry's blood splattered on his face and he was deafened by the gunshot).

Added DiffLines:

* SmallRoleBigImpact: He only appears in three episodes, with maybe about ten minutes of screen-time total, but his assassination of Phil's successor and subsequent murder forces Phil back into a direct role as the head of the Lupertazzi family, as well as strengthening Phil's MurderIsTheBestSolution tendencies, which heavily contribute to his decision to wage a full-scale MobWar on the [=DiMeo=] family.

**He is also this to Jackie Jr. in a way. Both of them had fathers who were powerful criminal mob bosses who share their name, both aren't really too bright and neither one of them really get any respect. But their fates turn out to be otherwise. Jackie was a young man trying to fast-track into the criminal life dropping out of school and ends up getting killed after the card game stunt leaving Sunshine and his own friends dead. Carmine was an older man, knowing full well the mob life is not worth it, giving the role to Johnny Sack and instead focuses on his own civilian life such as making movies. Carmine also genuinely loved his wife, while Jackie kept cheating on Meadow.

* EstablishingCharacterMoment: [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G3Gd_vSI0Pw His first scene]] marks him as a feared and respected Don who can switch back and forth between polite conversation and barking orders that are followed instantly. He tells Tony that he is aware of Tony's panic attacks and psychiatrist sessions and expresses sympathy for Tony's plight, sincerely encouraging him to take better care of himself and hoping they can keep doing business as usual. This firmly establishes him as an AffablyEvil ReasonableAuthorityFigure but also as someone who knows everything, which cannot be taken lightly, being omnisciently intimidating without directly threatening you. Also, he doesn't even acknowledge the strippers in the room while Tony has his eyes glued on 'em, showing how collected and focused Carmine is.

* DeathGlare: He has a hell of a glare when he's upset. It's perhaps most notable in his dinner with Doc Santoro; when Doc takes some food from Phil's plate, Phil gives him a look that could melt holes in steel.

* DirtyCoward: For all of Phil's bravado, when it comes time for violence he always only does or threatens it when he has a numerical advantage and/or is against weaker victims who can't fight back for one reason or another. Whenever it comes time to test his actual mettle in a confrontation he tends to reveal his true colors pretty quickly. Such as fleeing from Tony when Tony comes to collect the debt Phil owes him.
