Mikael is one of the most dangerous creatures to have ever existed, slaughtering entire groups of humans, werewolves and vampires with ease. He is also the strongest Original being able to overpower Elijah with ease. On his last fight with Klaus he was weakened further thanks to Papa Tunde's blade as well as werewolf venom but still manages to stake Klaus despite being overpowered using skill and tactics. Simply put , pound for pound there may be no better supernatural fighter out there .

* {{Badass}}: She's easily the most powerful magic-user seen in the series thus-far.

* BlondeGuysAreEvil: Not evil but Mikael's blonde hair is even more apparent in flashbacks.

* AlasPoorVillain: [[spoiler:As capable of evil as he was, Mikael's last moments were deeply touching. He killed by a surprise attack by Klaus and gives his farewell to Freya, showing previously unknown depths of humanity and vulnerability. Due to the previous abuse of his children, only Freya mourns him.]]

* EvenEvilHasLovedOnes: [[spoiler:Despite hating most of his family, he's overjoyed to find that Freya is still alive.]] Mikael is not evil though, just filled with utter hatred and anger, and seeks nothing more than the annihilation of Klaus and those who make the mistake of getting in his way. Mikael is the antagonist simply because Klaus is the protagonist. He was always fond of Rebekah too, calling her his favorite to Marcel, it seems Mikael favored his daughters over his sons.

* AlasPoorVillain: [[spoiler:As capable of evil as he was, Mikael's last moments were deeply touching. He allows himself to be killed by Klaus and gives his farewell to Freya, showing previously unknown depths of humanity and vulnerability. Only Freya mourns him.]]

* CurbStompBattle: A trained and highly skilled warrior, add his immense strength and resilience most fights go that way. The only time we see Klaus even have an equal fight with his father. Is when Mikael has been slowed down by a vast amount of wolf venom, even then it was to close too call.

* DemotedToDragon: Davina was smart enough to alter the resurrection spell to place him entirely under her control, which Mikael himself is very displeased with. When she temporarily loses the bracelet that keeps him under her power, he immediately tries to kill her and is only stopped due to Elijah's intervention.

* AxCrazy: [[spoiler: As a vampire, Kol seemed like he killed for pleasure though that was later revealed to be untrue and that he just went mad from the way his family treated him.]]

* BullyingADragon: [[spoiler:Klaus' hubris knows no bounds as when he and Mikael are talking in a bar, he believes he outmatches Mikael and that is why the latter hasn't made a move for the stake, Klaus seems to have suffered memory loss with the fact that he was beaten by Mikael twice when his step-father was weakened in both fights and fought the stake off him before easily enough. Mikael asks if he has come for another beating.]]

* CombatPragmatist: Shown in season two while weakened by Werewolf venom he used party goers as a decoy to slow down Klaus's pursuit . Also when they fought later Klaus managed to outfight and outpower his weakened father. Mikael resorted to throwing a weapon at Cami to save himself and give him an opening to take down Klaus. Later when out numbered and out powered due to his weakened state he retreats. Mikael is a veteran warrior , a Viking who knows the only thing the rules in a fight is to both survive and win. Anything else is just foolishness.

* WorfHadTheFlu: Averted, he still easily handed Klaus his ass while suffering from multiple werewolf bites, his second fight with Klaus has him weakened further and it shows, but he still manages to stake Klaus, though the stake was depowered.

* CombatPragmatist: Shown in season two while weakened by Werewolf venom he used party goers as a decoy to slow down Klaus's purist. Also when they fought later Klaus managed to outfight and outpower his weakened father. Mikael resorted to throwing a weapon at Cami to save himself and give him an opening to take down Klaus. Later when out numbered and out powered due to his weakened state he retreats. Mikael is a veteran warrior , who not only relies on his formidable strength. But on his centuries of experience and grasp of tactics.

* CurbStompBattle: A trained and highly skilled warrior, add his immense strength and resilience most fights go that way. Even Klaus can barely hold his own against his Father and had to resort to a sneak attack with Tunde's dagger to "win". The one time Klaus came close beating Mikael fairly in combat, Mikael was still recovering from Werewolf toxin in his bloodstream and the effects of Papa Tunde's dagger. The fight ended with Mikael staking his step-son, luckily for Klaus the stake was depowered so it only neutralized him rather than kill him.

* TragicMonster: When all is said and done he is as much of a tragedy as his children. The loss of Freya turned him bitter, his ego lead to him creating the vampire race . His wife is dead, leaving only his hate for Klaus to keep them going. His children never warmed up to him, Finn was more his mother's. Kol was fine being a loner . Also Klaus, Rebekah and Elijah had each other. The only child that loved him unconditionally was Freya and he believed her dead. So for nearly a millennium all he had was his blind hate and obsession to live on. No family to fight with him, no friends. Only his rage and pride to keep him going on. Even when it is revealed that Klaus killed Esther , Rebekah and Elijah still choose Klaus over the man who tormented them. Mikael is a victim, of his mistakes, of his pride. A lonely monster who had only his hate and rage to keep him going. Then , finally when he gets back the one thing he loved and loved him back. Mikael loses that as well.

* WellIntentionedExtremist: In his own way he is attempting to correct his mistake for making the Vampire race. As well as basically destroying the family he was trying to save, by granting them immortality . Unfortunately he doesn't much care how many bodies it takes to get it done as its collateral damge to him, he still won't kill needlessly though as every kill he makes is to serve a purpose i.e hurt Klaus and take away any safe haven . Unfortunately to him taking away safe haven is burning whole Cities down with the people still in them.

* DisproportionateRetribution: Mikael's wife was unfaithful to him, and he reacted by murdering her lover and his entire family. He proceeds to violently abuse the bastard child for his entire life.

* FoodChainOfEvil: He only feeds on other vampires so he does not have to feed on humans. Ironically in ''Le Grand Guignol'' we find while he prefers not to eat humans he has no problem killing hundreds of them.[[{{MoralDissonance}} From his conversation with Marcel he has destroyed scores of Cities.]] Not to mention in the same episode [[spoiler:he sets an Opera house aflame killing all the humans trapped inside, then precedes to go on a rampage in the City in the hunt of his children.]] In the vampire diaries, Mikael explains to Damon why he feeds on vampires, he never intended for the bloodlust of vampirism to happen so in his words he "feeds on the predator, not the innocent". While Mikael doesn't go out of his way to kill people as a general rule. But if convenient or useful he is willing to kill hundreds of them if it furthers his goals. Mikael is also quite old fashioned as in his mind, the only thing that matters to him at all is restoring his pride/honor and avenging his wife, making him single-minded. Nothng will stand in his way , the innocent , the guilty , nothing.
* FriendlyNeighborhoodVampire: Averted big time, he dislikes vampires and doesn't feed on people but he is a cranky extremly aggressive and violatile vampire who has little patience for others and kills with no hesitation. Also unlike [[FriendlyNeighborhoodVampire the trope he has no issue wiping out thousands of innocents to prove a point.]]

* ImAHumanitarian: He is a vampire that feeds only on other vampires, though he will feed on werewolves as alternative and humans only when desperate to heal from Tunde's dagger. Ironically while eating humans is beneath him. Wiping whole cities out and killing [[{{Hypocrite}} thousands of them is not.]]

* MightMakesRight: After his personality change, Mikael believed this, he sought to toughen his children because in his mind, only the strong survive and his methods were occasionally quite harsh to say the least. Klaus was frequently the target for standing out from the rest of his siblings. Klaus later shouts at Esther about this as the necklace she gave him weakened his dormant werewolf strength and kept him from using his anger, Klaus says that Mikael valued strength and blames her for the abuse he got from Mikael.

[[MamaBear Esther did it to protect her children .]] As Rebekah pointed out Mikael could have moved his family elsewhere , away from the werewolves. But that was too much for his ego, so he convinced Esther to make him and their children superhuman, with power to surpass the wolves. Worst he gave his family no choice in the matter, [[NiceJobBreakingItHero his pride leading to not only the Vampire curse. But to the monsters both he and his children become.]]

* DespairEventHorizon: Before Freya "died" Mikael was described by Esther and Finn as a kind, loving husband and parent, this is despite what his father did to him, after Freya's "death" Mikael grieved and distanced himself from Esther (causing her to seek comfort in Ansel), Klaus' birth renewned his faith in family but he never recovered from his loss and was irreversibly changed and became a far more colder person.

However how much of a face is debatable when we find out that he was one of the Vikings that stormed Freya and Dahlia village and slaughtered everyone there. Then again it was the [[ValueDissonance middle ages and that kind of thing was the norm.]]

* FatatlFlaw: For all his intellligence and power, his dismissive nature of his son has killed him twice. He keeps underestimating Klaus cunning and strength. The first time he overestimated his control of a situation and it backfired giving him his first death. The second time he was caught off guard in the middle of [[TheReasonYouSuck one of his speeches]] and killed by a blitz attack that left him defenseless and ended up dead a second time.
