* BadGuysDoTheDirtyWork: Korra was facing a moral dilemma because intervening against Unalaq's occupation goes against her obligation to neutrality to as the Avatar, and still felt Unalaq could be reasoned with, while Tonraq was reluctant to take action for fear that it would threaten more of his people. Varrick seemigly decides to finish the job himself and ordered his men to attack Unalaq. Not only does it fail thanks to Korra's intervention, and officially kickstarted the civil war. While it was Varrick's intention to start a war, he admitted his attempted kidnapping also had the purpose of proving to Korra that Unalaq was lying to all of them from the start, which did help Korra after all.

** Double Subverted. Varrick convinces the Krew to work with him after Unalaq's occupation of the Southern Water Tribe gets too extreme for either of their tastes, then ends up manipulating them into intensifying the conflict so he can profit off it. However, when he's caught and thrown in prison, he still aids them by giving them his fully-loaded battleship. In Book 3, despite some lingering animosity from Asami and Mako, he gladly aids them in finding the mole in Zaofu.
