* TookALevelInKindness: Eventually puts himself on the road to maturing and looking past his PsychopathicManchild tendencies.

* BewareTheQuietOnes: Normally is timid and reserved, but when he learns that Viktor [[spoiler: ate the Vita-Vita fruit (the fruit that belonged to his original captain who used it to perform horrific experiments on him and others) he threatens to kill Viktor if he misuses its powers, and casually cracks a stone wall in the process of performing a NeckLift on the scientist]].

* KnifeNut: Prefers knives.

* VillainProtagonist: Unlike the [[ChaoticGood Straw Hat Pirates]], the Nightmares are a more classical breed of pirate, being more than willing to kill viciously, plunder their enemies, and generally fight dishonorably. They're still the main focus of the story.

* NoPlaceForMeThere: During his MotiveRant to [[LawfulGood Smoker]], he acknowledges that a just world would have locked him up for [[HorrorHunger what he's done]], and he's fine with that if that just world exists.

* LawfulGood: Unlike the [[ObliviouslyEvil majority]] [[LawfulStupid of the]] [[LawfulEvil Marines]], Smoker is one of the few Marines with a functioning moral compass. This has earned Kaneki's respect.

* OOCIsSeriousBusiness: When Garp, famously uncaring for protocol or paperwork, opens a snail call with a perfectly by-the-book report, Sengoku knows that something is horribly wrong. Considering the situation was [[BodyHorror the Lily Carnation]] being [[GodzillaThreshold Buster Called.]]

* NonActionGuy: He has very liitle combat ability, prefering to use the power of his words. In combat he becomes a NonActionSnarker.
