* BreakTheHaughty: Kyouko goes through one of these over the course of Asuna's arc. Kyouko is a stern professor who is dissatisfied with her daughter's fascination of the virtual world and her association with Kirito, as well as trying to transfer Asuna into a prep school. After Asuna shows her the virtual world using the [=AmuSphere=], she begins to realize that she was an ungrateful mother and allows Asuna to continue her studies at the SAO survivors school.

* {{Hypocrite}}: When she forcefully yanks the plug on Asuna's VR helmet for being a few minutes later for dinner, accusing Asuna of "disrespecting the staff's efforts," Asuna is sorely tempted to remind her of several occasions where Kyouko was also late for dinner, threw out the meals, untasted, and had the staff make them again for her own convenience. Asuna ultimately decides not to do so.

** When Kyouko pulls the plug on Asuna's game for missing dinner again, she has a point about putting too much time into a game and forgetting her real-life duties. However, since this is coming from the woman who flat out insults her choice of friends and boyfriend, tries to force her into an ArrangedMarriage, and trying to control all aspects of her life while belittling her own choices, her actions come off as more villainous than good parenting.

* KickTheDog: She ends up on the receiving end of this when Asuna asks the latter if she is ashamed of her parents. No wonder Kyouko wasn't nice to her daughter or her parents.

* OldShame: InUniverse: Treats her humble origins as the daughter of farmers as this, which Asuna points out. She eventually gets somewhat better.

* HeelRealization: By the latter parts of Volume 7 (Season 2 Episode 23 of the anime), she and Asuna had a heart-to-heart inside ALO (using her daughter's "Erika" account) where Asuna confides to her mother that her own parents are proud of her achievements and that Asuna's time at SAO and ALO taught her the value of having people who can appreciate her deeds, causing Kyouko to break down in TearsOfRemorse over what an ungrateful mother she had been.

A member of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, who's responsible for monitoring situations in the virtual world, Kikuoka was present when Kirito returned to the real world, and the person who asks him to investigate the Phantom Bullet case. He maintains an ALO account, though it's mostly used as an alternate method to contact Kirito and Asuna.

* IDidWhatIHadToDo: Pretty much his modus operandi. He has good or noble intentions[[note]]'''SAO:''' Rescuing people stuck in full dives, and the effects of long duration dives, and skill transference. '''GGO:''' Catching a serial killer using MMOs as his way of carrying out the crime, or marking them for death. '''Project Alicization''': Defending Japan while trying to keep soldiers out of harms way and saving Kirito to try and repair the brain damage he suffered from Johnny Black's attack[[/note]]. How he goes about it though, often treads the grey zone of morality, or at least very pragmatic[[note]]Using a fresh out of 2+ year dive 16 yr old SAO survivor who's worried about his friends, and especially his in-game wife/girlfriend as his source. Using said survivor a year latter to investigate that serial murder, because he was the best player he knew at the moment. And finally, nearly getting Kirito killed by placing him back in the sights of several of old enemies from SAO, doing a snatch and grab of his unconscious body to take him to Ocean Turtle, and not revealing any information about him to his friends, family, or girlfriend, and copying the Quantum Field Data of real human babies to make naturally learning and growth A.I.s for warfare.[[/note]]

* CharacterDevelopment: Kyouko initially disliked her daughter's fascination of the virtual world and viewed it as a waste of time, until Asuna convinced her to look into that world herself through the [=AmuSphere=]. After remembering her sad nostalgic memories upon looking at Asuna's home resembling her childhood's, Kyouko's cold heart melted; thus she now tells Asuna that, as long as she works hard to become strong enough to support someone else, she would allow Asuna to do as she pleased.

* EducationMama: She claims that the SAO survivors school is not a school at all, but a prison staffed by nobodies. She pulled strings to transfer Asuna into a prep school where she can graduate quickly and start college within the year. In volume 7 they reach a compromise: as long as Asuna maintans a high degree of academic excellence and prepares for college, then she can stay at the SAO survivors school.

* GoldDigger: Played with. There are vibes that she married Asuna's father because of his money and she certainly wants Asuna to do so. She claims that it would be "stable" and she "wouldn't have to worry". However, she DID use that stability to build a successful career of her own, and wants Asuna to do the same as well.

** Kyouko describes the SAO Survivor's School as essentially a correctional facility used to monitor the SAO survivors, noting that the lenient entry conditions are a little too good to be true, echoing what Kazuto said to Suguha while discussing it. Asuna knows her mother has a point, but believes that regardless of the reason why the school was established, she likes being there.
* NeverMyFault: Shades of it, especially when Asuna is disgusted that her mother used a New Year's celebrations as a means to play match maker for yet another potential arranged marriage with the son of a banking business family. Asuna ask her if she's forgotten about what happened the last time her parents did that with Sugou. Kyouki claims that was her husband Shouzou's fault, but her face and reactions to being accused may hint that she's only openly disagreeing in hindsight.

* TheHeavy: [[spoiler: She's an Mental Health Counseling Program like Yui. The glitches in SAO are because of her overloading due to being unable to help the players like Yui.]]

* CloningBlues: [[spoiler:Hollow [=PoH=] convinces her that she's actually a Hollow AI clone of the real Philia and that she killed the real one. This is backed up by how she cannot return to Aincrad unlike Kirito. It turns out that she's the real one.]]

* YouCantGoHomeAgain: Being trapped in a Death Game is one thing, but somehow, she is unable to return to Aincrad to join the rest of the players. [[spoiler:She returns to Aincrad once the Hollow Area is beaten, though like everyone else, she can't return to below floor 76.]]
