He avoids any kind of chance of making genuine connections out of fear that he loses his friends again. This mask of simply bottling up his emotions leads to the first Unchanging Crow incident, which concludes with an anticlimax where Vergilius and Dante decide to suppress it with a pill, essentially confirming to him that he will never get what he wants while bottling up his pain. This makes him one of the most mentally unhealthy members of the cast, a trait that persists until the ''real'' Sang Yi finally emerges and tells them everything that Yi Sang didn't. He may not be happy like this, but he's healthier and less abnormal.
