This is the canon page, so please don't add stuff you know isn't canon.

* WorfHadTheFlu: ''Star Wars: Clone Wars'' reveals that Grievous' chest was crushed by Mace Windu, explaining why he was weaker in ''Revenge of the Sith'' than he was in the miniseries, also explaining why he was coughing throughout the movie. This is no longer canon however.
Is there an issue? Send a MessageReason:
1: Star Wars Clone Wars is the adaptation. Regardless of order of appearence, Grievous was first created for Revenge of the Sith. The 2003 series version was based upon concept arts from the production of the film. So if anything that version is the Adaptational Badass. 2: It's Legends stuff, and it doesn't belong here.

* AdaptationalWimp: When he first appear in ''Star Wars: Clone Wars'', Grievous is a one-man Jedi-killing machine, easily defeating a group of Jedi on his own (two of them being council members) with only two arms. Since the miniseries is now non-canon, all of Grievous' other appearances had him lost in many battles including against Gungans, in addition to being a DirtyCoward.

->'''Appears in:''' ''ComicBook/{{Kanan}}''

-->''"Understand, as a Separatist, I fought for freedom... but put my trust in a corrupt leadership."

A Devaronian that joined the Separatists in their plight for freedom against the Republic. After losing the Conquest of Kaller to Republic forces led by Jedi Master Depa Billaba, it was shortly followed by the issuing of Order 66 and the rise of the Empire. Knowing that he would be persecuted for being an enemy of the state, he went into hiding on the Outer Rim world of Lahn and took up the job of a crime boss under the name of "Jondo". However, he soon came across Billaba's surviving Padawan, Caleb Dume, as well as the boy's mentor, Janus Kasmir, and ended up becoming allies.
----
* ElectronicEyes: His right eye is a cybernetic eye.
* HeelFaceTurn: While he remains on the fence about his past allegiances in hindsight, he puts aside his differences with Caleb and goes out to save him with Janus when the boy gets captured by his former clone friends.
* HeelRealization: After the Clone Wars, he came to realize that he was wrong to place his trust in the corrupt Separatist leaders and expect his want for freedom to be fulfilled by them. However, as he says to Caleb, he's still not fond of the late Republic either, especially considering [[TheEmpire the state it is in now]].

Saboteur
''ComicBook/DarthMaulSonOfDathomir'' | ''Film/RevengeOfTheSith''

Following the Trade Federation's defeat on Naboo, it was decided that a newer, tougher model of battle droid needed to be manufactured. The result was a larger, more heavily armored droid with slightly higher intelligence and more effective, built-in weaponry. They serve throughout the Clone Wars, and are the most numerous
droids fired in missiles by vulture the Separatist army after the ordinary battle droids.

* ArmedLegs: Each of their various legs ends in a different tool for destroying a ship's inner workings.
* AttackItsWeakpoint: Their eyes are extremely vunerable.
* GripingAboutGremlins: Buzz Droids are little saboteurs launched onto enemy ships to tear them apart, like the mythical gremlin.
* LaserCutter: One of their tools is a laser that cuts up the ships they land on.
* ThisIsADrill: Their primary tool is a drill.

* ArmedLegs: Each ArmCannon: Some variants have a really big gun for an arm that can fire seeker missiles.
* CanonImmigrant: Not [=B2s=] in general, but the grapple variant that appeared in the ''Revenge
of the Sith'' video game adaptation became canon thanks to one appearing in the second issue of ''Darth Maul: Son of Dathomir''.
* EliteMook: The Super Battle Droids make
their various legs ends in appearance, much more heavily armored than their skeletal cousins, and possessing enough firepower to force Mace Windu off a different tool for destroying a ship's inner workings.

* AttackItsWeakpoint: Their eyes EvilIsBigger: They are larger and bulkier than the B1-s, and much more effective fighters.
* EvilSoundsDeep: In ''The Clone Wars'', their voice is much deeper than the B1’s, and unsurprisingly they're far more competent. Otherwise in ''Revenge of the Sith'', their voice is identical to the B1's.
* HeavilyArmoredMook: Take a B1 battle droid, make it smarter, stronger, and stick it in armor. You basically get these guys.
* KillerRobot: Unlike their predecessors, they're portrayed as being
extremely vunerable.
efficient and dangerous almost every time they appear.
* GripingAboutGremlins: Buzz Droids InSeriesNickname: They’re sometimes referred to as "Super Battle Droids".
* JetPack: Another sub-type comes with built-in ones.
* MechaMooks: Tougher mooks, but mooks nonetheless.
* MenOfSherwood: Equipped with heavier armor, capable of surviving multiple hits, they’re more competent than the B1-s, and in large numbers can be very effective, the super battle droids
are little saboteurs launched onto enemy ships to tear them apart, like an upgrade from the mythical gremlin.
* LaserCutter: One
B1 in every way. They’re the true counterpart of the clones: , but they’re far from being on EliteMook levels.
* PuttingOnTheReich: As if it wasn't clear that the Separatists are evil, they now have an army of robots marching with
their tools is right arms outstretched.
* SuperWristGadget: The normal-type ones have dual-blasters built into their wrists.
* TopHeavyGuy: ''The Clone Wars'' art style makes their upper bodies look larger, and as
a laser that cuts up result, even more imposing.
* UnderestimatingBadassery: Two of them made a big mistake by underestimating R2-D2 just because he's an astro-droid. R2-D2 responded to them by [[KillItWithFire incinerating them]].
* WeHaveReserves: Billions of B2s serve
the ships Separatist army, and Grievous and Dooku are both happy to throw them away.
* ZergRush: Like their predecessors,
they land on.
* ThisIsADrill: Their primary tool is a drill.

* KnightOfCerebus: A rare {{Mook}} example when they debuted in early Season 1 ''The Clone Wars''. Even though they were defeated in their first appearance, they really showed that not all of the Separatist droids are bumbling comic relief (but even then, that trait seems to only be restricted to the B1s and [=OOMs=]) and could be a legitimate threat. Even in the later seasons, where they became a little more common and slightly more of a pushover, they were still a threat to non-Jedi (to Jedi, they're a nuisance at best).

* AchillesHeel: Despite their reputation, they have several. In addition to being very vulnerable in travel mode, their shields don't protect them from mounted heavy weapons, stationary objects and slow-moving projectiles such as lightly-tossed grenades, and they're blind from behind. The Onderon Rebels were taught about these weaknesses as part of their initial training.

* DeflectorShield: Their trademark.
* EliteMooks: Even moreso than the B2s. A single droideka could usually cut through dozens of clone troopers and give a Jedi a fair fight.
* FragileSpeedster: In travel mode, as they can move really fast, but are unprotected.
* GlassCannon: Behind their mighty shields, the droidekas are still very delicate and lightly constructed, and cannot take a direct attack. The sniper variants introduced during the Clone Wars are this even compared to the basic model, as they do have a material blast shield, but it protects only their front side and they don't have the bubble energy shields that the standard model has, and are thus easier to destroy. Justified as they were designed to fight from long-range.
* HeavilyArmoredMook: Both armored and possessed of shields.
* KillerRobot: They're alternatively called "destroyer droids".
* LuckilyMyShieldWillProtectMe: Provided their enemies don't use any of their [[AchillesHeel Achilles Heels]] against them.
* MechanicalMonster: The Droidekas. These are not puny little battle droids--they're fast, defended by built-in shield generators, and are armed with rapid firing laser cannons that pack a serious wallop. When the Neimodians send a pack after Qui Gon and Obi Wan on their ship, they immediately realize they're in over their heads fighting them, [[KnowWhenToFoldEm and make a break for it right away.]]
* MechaMooks: More dangerous and less common than the B1 or B2 models, but still quite prevalent.
* MightyGlacier: In attack mode, which allows them to use their twin front-facing blasters, but limits their movement speed.
* NamesToRunAwayFromReallyFast: "Destroyer droids", anybody?
* RollingAttack: They don't normally do this themselves, as they are too fragile, but Obi-Wan Kenobi used three of them this way when surrounded by squads of other droids.
* TheQuietOne: Unlike most droid infantry units (aside from other anti-infantry units such as Dwarf Spider Droids and Crab Droids), they are never shown to have the ability to talk. The Sniper variation introduced in ''The Clone Wars'' is the only which speaks on-screen, but is unknown if this extends to the entire model.
* SniperRifle: Variant models that used sniper blasts were used later on in the Clone Wars.
* TransformingMecha: They can change between their fast-moving but fragile wheel mode and their devastating but slow attack mode.

On one hand, the films establish them as very good close quarters fighters with some dangerous tricks up their sleeve, but still destroyable by a resourceful Jedi. On the other hand, some videogames, books and series portrays them as either impossibly agile and resilient or just little more dangerous than a B2.

Produced at horrendous expense, the [=MagnaGuards=] are self-motivated, learning droids, as functional
and eradicate intelligent as any living being. Built for the sole purpose of fighting Jedi, [=MagnaGuards=] are specialized close-combat units who can take almost all organic material.comers.

* CombatTentacles: Twelve energy tendrils AdaptationalBadass: The continuities are unable to agree in how proficient those droids are in combat. On one hand, the films establish them as very good close quarters fighters with some dangerous tricks up their sleeve, but still destroyable by a resourceful Jedi. On the other hand, some videogames, books and series portrays them as either impossibly agile and resilient or just little more dangerous than a B2.
* BadassCape: Some of them wear these, notably those serving under General Grievous.
* BladeOnAStick: They favor a Force-pike built from a material
that pull double duty as sensors dampens the effects of a lightsaber blade.

* CranialProcessingUnit:
** Subverted. Within the span of a few seconds, Obi-Wan decapitates a Magna-Guard, turns away from it, and is caught off guard when it keeps
fighting it.anyway. This is explained in the movie's visual dictionary that there is a second processing unit and photoreceptor in the center of the chest that it can use to remain functional even after being amputated and decapitated.
** There's a pair of continuity errors in which Magna-Guards collapse for good in instances they shouldn't. The first is immediately after the mentioned moment, when a Magna-Guard falls completely inert after simply being sliced in half at the waist by Anakin (somewhat even regular droids can survive to), and the second is when Obi-Wan fights another Magna-Guard on Utapau before fighting Grievous, disabling it again simply by taking off its head. There are two possibilities: either only ''some'' of them have two processing units, or that two Magna-Guard realised who they were fighting and decided to cut their losses.
* EliteMooks: UpToEleven. The [=MagnaGuard=]s were designed to kill Jedi and did so, being more than a match for any Padawan or Knight, and could even give a Master a run for their money.
* EyesDoNotBelongThere: They have an [[ExtraEyes Extra Eye]] on their abdomen, allowing them to continue fighting even after being decapitated ([[DependingOnTheWriter sometimes]]).
* GlowingMechanicalEyes: In both [[RedEyesTakeWarning red]] and yellow varieties.
* KillerRobot: They're better at it than most battle droids.
* KungFuProofMook: They are designed to take on Jedi, and thus have an advanced programmation in hand-to-hand and carry lightsaber-resistent staves.
* MechanicalMonster: Very few [=MagnaGuard=]s were produced due to the prohibitive costs. Those that did see service, however, soon built a frightening reputation for themselves.
* MookLieutenant: Give orders to the other droids.
* PraetorianGuard: To General Grievous. In ''The Clone Wars'', they're shown protecting Count Dooku, along with other Separatist leaders.
* RedEyesTakeWarning: Although a variant features gold eyes, with matching electro-staffs.
* SimpleStaff: Their weapon of choice.

When Tambor was getting too greedy and trying to get every treasure on Ryloth before leaving Lessu to get bombed, both Count Dooku and TA-175 insisted that Tambor get as much as he realistically can. Once he was ready to leave, TA-175 evacuated without him, leaving him to be captured by the Republic forces.

* MookLieutenant: They're entire function is to direct the infantry on behalf of their superiors.
* OffWithHisHead: They tend to fall victim this, as the Republic forces sometimes try to steal their heads to gain tactical information.
* PaletteSwap: Unlike most Separatists droids, aside from each one having a different voice and number, they all have unique color schemes, regardless of plot importance. [[TropesAreTools From a production standpoint]], this makes it so that the animators don't have to waste their budget creating an organic Separatist commander that's only important for one or two scenes.
* RedEyesTakeWarning: Most Tactical Droids have white photoreceptors, but a few, such as General Grievous's Tactical Droid, TV-94 (and TV-94b) have red photoreceptors.
* RidiculouslyHumanRobots: A lot of T-series tactical droids show an inflated sense of pride in being a droid (sometimes considering themselves superior in thought to organics). Despite their RoboSpeak, they will also sometimes let out an EvilLaugh or exhibit fear when they know they are in danger.
* SmugSnake: Aside from their bossiness and inflated pride in their tactical prowess, one of their biggest weaknesses is that they don't have a realistic assessment of their chances (and they sometimes fail to take some things into consideration such as their own protection, the Jedi having the Force or captives rebelling), one of the reasons the Super Tactical Droids were made.
* TheStrategist: They often play this role to coordinate the less intelligent B1s.
* TooDumbToLive: While they are definitely smarter than the B1s and can be effective strategists, they seem to lack a sense of self-preservation programming as Poggle the Lesser's droid TX-21 demonstrated. When Ahsoka Tano stuck an explosive charge to a nigh-invincible Super Tank, all he did was gloat about the tank's superior armor when he was right next to the charge.
* VillainOfTheWeek: The only time a standard Tactical Droid ever played this role was TX-20 in "Innocents of Ryloth". Justified in that TX-20 was the [[PaletteSwap first]] Tactical Droid made production-wise ("Innocents of Ryloth" was produced before "Jedi Crash", the first on-screen appearance of one of the droids).
* WhyAmITicking: When Zygerrian slaver Darts D'Nar planted bombs all over Kiros's city, he secretly placed one bomb in reserve on his Tactical Droid, activating it to distract Obi-Wan. Judging from the droid's reaction, he was not informed of this.

* ArmCannon: Possess heavy blasters for hands.
* TheDreaded: Even Jedi are wary of these things, and the only infantry units more dreaded than them are [=MagnaGuards=].
* DeflectorShield: Their trademark.

* NamesToRunAwayFromReallyFast: "Destroyer droids", anybody?
* TripodTerror: Not as prevalent as the [[HumongousMecha Octuptarra Tri-Droids]], but they do have three legs.

* RedEyesTakeWarning: Most Tactical Droids have white photoreceptors, but a few, such as General Grievous's Tactical Droid, TV-94 (and TV-94b) have red photoreceptors.

Justified in that TX-20 was the [[PaletteSwap first]] Tactical Droid made production-wise ("Innocents of Ryloth" was produced before "Jedi Crash", the first on-screen appearance of one of the droids).

A droid model built to act as advisors to Separatist military commanders.
----
* CreepyMonotone: They can even [[EvilLaugh laugh]] in a monotone.
* TheDragon: They sometimes play this role to the VillainOfTheWeek[=/=]ArcVillain.
* DragonInChief: Emir Wat Tambor's Tactical Droid, TA-175, was this in "Liberty on Ryloth".
* EliteMooks: They themselves are this, but the Super Tactical Droids introduced in Season 5 take this further.
* EvilCannotComprehendGood: As TX-20 demonstrates, they sometimes fail to consider that even unarmed civilians would try to attack them if inspired to do so.
-->'''TX-20:''' [[MadnessMantra Does not compute. Does not compute. Does not compute.]]
* GlowingMechanicalEyes: They all have them, in white or red.
* HumanShield: TX-20 used Nabat's captive population as a shield for the proton cannons providing anti-air support for Ryloth's surface. This doesn't work, [[HoistByHisOwnPetard as he ends up torn apart by said shield]].

* LogicalWeakness: Powerless against Force techniques, as he has no way of repelling them and has none of his own, and nearly all of his defeats involve the Force being used against him. He compensates for this by blitzing his opponents with overwhelming sword play, to either distract them or finish them before the Force can come into play.

And being a heavily-robotic cyborg, {{EMP}} weaponry such as Gungan boomers can also literally shut him down. However, this one isn't quite as easy to exploit since he most likely knows to be wary of anti-droid weaponry and can cut down the boomers with his lightsabers. The Gungan Army was only able to exploit this weakness when General Tarpals sacrificed his life to pin Grievous down.

-->''"Listen to me, Jedi. I do not care about your politics. I do not care about your Republic. I only live to see you die!"''

A Kaleesh cyborg who serves as commander of the Separatist Droid Army. He is schooled in the art of lightsaber combat by Count Dooku, and has slain and plundered the lightsabers of countless Jedi.
----
* AbnormalLimbRotationRange: He's able to crab-walk by flipping his hands around completely, along with his head.
* ArtEvolution: In ''The Clone Wars'', his character model started off only having two fingers per hand when split apart. The Utapau arc reels revealed a more film-accurate model with the same number of fingers he had in ''Revenge of the Sith''.
* AxCrazy: HairTriggerTemper and his desire to kill Jedi aside, the Utapau arc reel shows that he had an "execution room" (read: torture chamber) set up aboard a ''supply carrier'', of all ship types.
-->'''Obi-Wan Kenobi:''' Execution room? You have a whole room dedicated to ''that''?
-->'''Battle Droid:''' Um....yeah. Yes. Come with me.
-->'''Obi-Wan:''' [[DeadpanSnarker I do admire Grievous's commitment.]]
* BadassBiker: He rides a pretty cool looking speeder bike in "Bound for Rescue" and the Utapau arc reels. He also has a few Wheel Bikes in ''Revenge of the Sith'', which are essentially giant buzz saws with four legs for support, a seat and a blaster cannon attached to it.
* BadassBoast: The caption quote.
* BadassCape: Which he usually [[TheCoatsAreOff removes]] before fighting.
* BadassTransplant: The mechanical version. Aside from his head and some internal organs, his entire body has been cybernetically augmented, making him far more dangerous than any of the droids in his command. This is also invoked on his part, as he claims that not only are these modifications an improvement over his original body, but he volunteered to become a cyborg to be like a Jedi.
* BadBoss: Hates the battle droids under his command, deeming them useless (not hard to see why, though) and regularly destroys or abuses them whenever he loses his temper.
* BattleTrophy: All his lightsabers were taken from Jedi he'd killed.
* BerserkButton: If you want to live, never, ever, ''ever'' compare him to, or mistake him for, a droid.
* BloodKnight: According to him, his only reason for being involved in the war is to kill Jedi.
* BodyHorror: The only parts of his physical body that are still intact are his eyes and some of his organs.
* TheBrute: He's the commander of the droid army, and takes great pride in his ability as a [[HeroKiller Jedi hunter.]] Though he's physically threatening, he doesn't care much for strategy or the political machinations of the Sith. Said best in this exchange with Obi-Wan:
-->'''Obi-Wan''': I hear a lot of talking, General, but in the final accounting, what does all the talk get you? A futile quest for power? A mutilated body? And your place as Dooku's errand boy!"
-->'''Grievous''': I'm no errand boy, and I'm not in this war for Dooku's politics. I am the leader of the most powerful droid army the galaxy has ever seen!
* CardCarryingVillain: He's a shamelessly bloodthirsty killer who delights in plundering the lightsabers of slain Jedi.
* CatchPhrase: His two favorite words are "Impossible!" and "Kenobi!"
* CombatPragmatist: He's explicitly trained to fight like this: he's supposed to use surprise, fear, intimidation, and power to overwhelm his opponents, and to flee when that doesn't work. In ''The Clone Wars'', he likes to shoot people with a blaster using one of his extra arms while they're focused on his regular two.
* ColdBloodedTorture: The Utapau arc reels show that after he had captured Obi-Wan, he intended to execute him in the most agonizing way possible via torture chamber after Dooku had just given the order for execution.
* CoolPet: His cyborg roggwart, Gor, a large horned lizard-like monster similar to a [[Film/ReturnOfTheJedi rancor]] living in his castle on Vassek. He didn't survive when the Jedi infiltrated his castle.
* CurbStompBattle: He has his moments:
** During their first duel in Season 1, he effortlessly defeated Ahsoka, who escaped only because Grievous got distracted for a moment by an explosion. She put up a better fight during their rematch in Season 5, but Grievous still bested her rather easily.
** Although Ventress gained the upper hand in their one-on-one duel in "Massacre", after he had her shot by his droid army, he tore apart the other Nightsisters and their undead army with ease.
** In ''Son of Dathomir'', [[spoiler:his army pretty much crushes Maul's Shadow Collective in two consecutive battles, and personally forces Maul to retreat during the first. While he and Dooku gets captured during the second, after Dooku provided him an opportunity to escape his cell, he literally tore apart several Death Watch soldiers who tried to stop him. He even told the few survivors to go and ask their master for reinforcements. In the final issue, his army crushes the Shadow Collective on three fronts, while he deals the death blow to Mother Talzin]].
* {{Cyborg}}: An [[NinjaPirateZombieRobot alien]] cyborg whose entire body is basically a canister for his eyes, brain, and organs.
* DarthVaderClone: The third of the Prequels' "Proto-Vaders." The cyborg with breathing problems, undone by his reliance on machines. According to the director's commentary for ''Revenge of the Sith'', this was [[InvokedTrope deliberately invoked]] to foreshadow Anakin's ultimate fate.
* DirtyCoward: Brags over his superiority to the Jedi, then uses cheap tactics (superior numbers, among other things) and retreats immediately once he thinks the tables have turned.
* DragonAscendant: Subverted. When Count Dooku is killed, the Jedi ''think'' Grievous has become this when in reality, he's just become a pawn for Sidious to [[YouHaveOutlivedYourUsefulness dispose of to end the Clone Wars.]]
* DualWielding: Taken UpToEleven; by splitting his arms, he can wield ''four'' lightsabers at once.
* EvilCripple: All that's left of Grievous are his internal organs, his brain, and some of his face. That's about as crippled as you can get. However, he doesn't see himself as a cripple and [[BadassTransplant sees his new body as an improvement over his old one]].
* EvilSoundsDeep: Grievous's voice is this, not to mention gravelly, sickly, and partially synthesized.
* {{Expy}}: Creator/GeorgeLucas created him as a deliberate DarthVaderClone who was half-man, half-robot. Or in his words, "20% alien and 80% robot".
* [[FakeUltimateHero Fake Ultimate Villain]]: In the eyes of the Republic at large, upon Dooku's death, Grievous took over as the BigBad; the Senate even voted to continue the Clone Wars for as long as Grievous lived. However, Palpatine is clearly the one pulling the strings, using both Dooku ''and'' Grievous as scapegoats to keep his involvement a secret.
* FauxAffablyEvil: When he's not insulting his enemies, he's usually mockingly complimenting/humoring them.
* FiringOneHanded: How he uses his blaster.
* FourStarBadass: He's one of the highest ranking Separatist military leaders, and can fight one-on-one with Jedi.
* FrontLineGeneral: When he isn't beating a retreat, he's usually leading from the front.
* TheGeneralissimo: In fact, if not name. He's the Confederacy's real second-in-command, and takes over as head of the Separatists after Dooku is killed.
* GeneralFailure: Probably because he's a general and more used to ground combat, his forays into fleet command tend to be much less successful. In a more general sense, he's also a fairly poor tactician, and pulls a ScrewThisImOuttaHere whenever things go marginally pear-shaped, but this was more the case in Season 1. From Season 2 onward, he started [[TookALevelInBadass showing a little more tactical brilliance both in ground and fleet command]]. In "Grievous Intrigue", he predicted Obi-Wan's entire battle plan for rescuing Eeth Koth, and in "ARC Troopers", he deliberately sacrificed the frigates in his fleet so the debris carrying the Trident drill ship components could fall into Kamino's oceans (although how much of that plan is his is debatable, considering he was also working with Asajj Ventress during the battle).
* GeneralRipper: He would gladly stand on a pile of what remains of his subordinates, droid and organic alike, if it meant victory.
* GutturalGrowler: He even growls when expressing pleasure.
* HairTriggerTemper: There are a lot of things besides incompetent Battle Droids that can make him angry. According to ''Star Wars: In 100 Scenes'', he was given some brain implants that increase his coordination while making him more angry and aggressive, which serves to make him even more dangerous.
* HandicappedBadass: Many of the fights he get into involve him getting one of his arms amputated. It doesn't stop him from fighting effectively with the others until he can get them repaired.
* HellishPupils: Has yellow, reptilian eyes.
* HeroKiller: DirtyCoward tendencies aside, those Jedi that he got his lightsabers from were killed by ''his'' own hand.
* HoistByHisOwnPetard: After losing his lightsaber and being forced to take on Grievous in a hand-to-hand brawl, Obi-Wan manages to finish him off with his own dropped blaster.
* IJustWantToBeBadass: How great a warrior he was when he was a Kaleesh warlord isn't clear, but he apparently didn't think he was great ''enough''. He claims that he voluntarily turned himself into a cyborg to improve himself and be equal to the Jesi.
* IncurableCoughOfDeath: This was mostly due to his cybernetics. The original explanation, back when ''WesternAnimation/StarWarsCloneWars'' was canon, was that he was typically "healthy" until Mace Windu used the Force to damage his chest. However, this was {{Retcon}}ned in ''The Clone Wars'', which revealed he always had the problem.
* InsaneAdmiral: A mad ruin of a Kaleesh warlord, trapped inside his cybernetics, who takes out his anger on any populace he can get his hands on.
* ITakeOffenseToThatLastOne: Subverted in "Grievous Intrigue". When facing him, Eeth Koth called Grievous a "coward and murderer". Usually one would expect for the villain to be insulted by being called a coward. Grievous instead took issue with being dubbed a murderer, stating that he didn't consider "ridding the galaxy of you Jedi filth" to be murder.
* KickTheSonOfABitch: The Nightsisters are a culture of vicious misandrists who feel free to abuse, brainwash, and even kill the male Nightbrothers whenever they please. Given that, many fans rooted for Grievous and the battle droids as they mercilessly killed them during "Massacre".
* KillItWithFire: Obi-Wan manages to kill him by shooting at his "gut sack", which then bursts all the living tissue in his body into flames.
* LackOfEmpathy: He feels nothing for the countless Jedi and Padawans he has killed.
* LargeHam: He tends to be rather overly dramatic when speaking.
-->'''Grievous:''' '''YOU WILL NEVER DEFEAT GRIEVOUS! NEVER!'''
* LaserBlade: Thanks to his [[MultiArmedAndDangerous many arms]], he can wield four lightsabers at once.
* LightningBruiser: He can move extremely quickly and hit really hard.
* LizardFolk: His race, the Kaleesh, are reptilian in appearance.
* LooksLikeOrlok: Has the narrow face, the sunken eyes, the spindly arms and legs, and the cloak.
* MasterSwordsman: Before Obi-Wan defeated him, the only people who held their own against him without resorting to using the Force were Kit Fisto and Ventress.
* MalevolentMaskedMan: What's worse is that it's grafted to his face.
* MeaningfulName: "Grievous" means "causing grief or great sorrow," somewhat fitting for the slaughterer of millions. A case of NamesToRunAwayFromReallyFast.
* MultiArmedAndDangerous: His arms can divide in half, giving him four limbs and allowing him to use four lightsabers at a time.
* MysteriousPast: Grievous keeps most of his past hidden.
* NeckSnap: Does it to a clone trooper in "Bound for Rescue", with his foot no less.
* NinjaPirateZombieRobot: A [[LizardFolk reptilian]] alien {{Cyborg}} who uses lightsabers.
* NoIndoorVoice: Although, to be fair, his voice is so grating and deep that even if he ''were'' speaking at a normal volume, it would still come across as rather loud.
* OminousOperaCape: Wears one in ''Revenge Of The Sith'' until he [[TheCoatsAreOff takes it off]] right before his duel with Obi-Wan.
* OneManArmy: Clone troopers are no match for Grievous; he tears them to pieces during his attack on a Republic cruiser in "Bound for Rescue".
* PetTheDog: He seemed genuinely saddened and enraged when he learned that his pet, Gor, was killed by Kit Fisto and Nahdar Vebb.
* ProudWarriorRaceGuy: He used to be a Kaleesh warlord before he became a cyborg general.
* PsychoForHire: He may not get paid for what he does, but his involvement with the Confederacy is just an excuse for him to kill Jedi, and he enjoys it a little ''too'' much if the image quote is any indication. At least, this is what he's like [[FallenHero post-reconstruction]].
* TheRival: He has a lasting enmity with Obi-Wan that borders on this trope. Obi-Wan even invoked it in "Grievous Intrigue" when he was certain that Grievous would board his ship and face him personally rather than simply blow him up with his ship.
* RousingSpeech: PlayedForLaughs, when he gives one to a bunch of ''droids'' designed for suicide-bombing. He even explicitly tells them that [[GoYeHeroesGoAndDie none of them will be coming back]].
* SerialKiller: Has the traits of one, like only going after a specific community of people, and keeping trophies to remind him of his past murders.
* ShadowArchetype: Of pre-FaceHeelTurn Anakin/Vader. A twisted mixture of machine and man which causes problems in breathing and combat.
* SmugSnake: Played with. He tends to be overconfident about his own abilities and boast at his enemies before being defeated in combat, forced to flee and/or pull a fast one on his enemies, but every now and then, he gets his own victories and shows some instances of tactical brilliance.
* SupernaturalGoldEyes: Subverted. Yes, he's evil, and yes, he has gold eyes, but he isn't a Sith (or even a force-sensitive) and only ever received lightsaber training from Count Dooku.
* TookALevelInBadass: Several through ''The Clone Wars'':
** In "Grievous Intrigue". He defeats Eeth Koth, predicts Obi-Wan's entire battle plan (doesn't quite work, but he gets points for cleverness), fights his way through two more Masters and a legion of clones in order to escape, and manages to flee Saleucami while under fire and despite Obi-Wan's attempts to stop him, laughing as he escapes.
** He took another in "Massacre", where he and his droid forces decimate the Nightsisters (aside from a minor setback against Ventress).
** And another in "Bound for Rescue", where he defeated Obi-Wan in a space battle, then one-on-one in a duel.
** Yet another in the first issue of the ''Son of Dathomir'' comic adaptation, where he matches ''Darth Maul'', of all people, in one-to-one combat, and utterly trounces his forces in the over-all battle. In the fourth, he [[spoiler:kills Mother Talzin.]]
* TheUnreveal: In "Lair of Grievous" his mask had to be replaced by a new one. As the doctor-droid started to remove it, it seemed that his real face would be revealed, but the scene cut to the Jedi, and when we next see the General, he already has a new mask on.
* UnwittingPawn: He never realizes that the Chancellor he's kidnapped is actually the man he's working for.
* VillainDecay: Sort of a time-reversed case. ''Revenge Of The Sith'' has him failing at everything he tries to do, and running away from the good guys, which makes his fearsome reputation look like an InformedAttribute. The various TV series managed to do him justice as a real threat.
* VillainousRescue: Though he's rescuing another villain, he does save Count Dooku's life from Mother Talzin in "Massacre".
* WasOnceAMan: He used to be a Kaleesh, but his extensive injuries have basically limited his body to a heart and a horribly-scarred face. He barely resembles his original species at this point, if material from ''Legends'' is to be believed.
* WhiteMaskOfDoom: His mask resembles a Kaleesh skull.
* WouldHitAGirl: Definitely. Would also commit genocide against an entire clan of females.
* WouldHurtAChild: He had several Padawan braids among his trophies in "Lair of Grievous", and relished the idea of killing the younglings and adding their newly-built lightsabers to his collection in "A Necessary Bond".
* YouHaveOutlivedYourUsefulness: Indirectly, Palpatine directs the Jedi to the planet where Grievous is hiding so he can be killed and end the Clone Wars.

According to Echo in the Bad Batch arc, even Wat Tambor - a Separatist Council Member - is scared of what Trench might do to him if he found out that Echo - the source of the military algorithm the Separatists have been using against the Republic until then - escaped from Skako Minor and is [[HoistByHisOwnPetard using what he learned in their custody against them]].
* {{Expy}}: His deep voice and grandiose mannerisms are reminiscent of Megatron from ''WesternAnimation/BeastWars''. He even borrows his purring "yeeeeesss" catch phrase.
* ExtraEyes: Four of them, for a total of six. He later gets one of those eyes replaced.
* FaceDeathWithDignity: His last moment before the impact of his own rockets is [[GracefulLoser a quiet acceptance of his defeat]]. However, he somehow survived it.
* GoodScarsEvilScars: He gains a few on his face in "The Unknown", possibly from the fireball in "Cat and Mouse".
* HiddenWeapons: In addition to the ArmCannon he got as a cyborg, he has an [[ShockAndAwe electroshock prod]] concealed in his walking stick.
* HoistByHisOwnPetard:
** Both literally ''and'' metaphorically. He had rockets locked on the magnetic signature of Anakin's cloaked ship, just like he did numerous times before. Except since [[HandWave usually]] "[[Film/TheEmpireStrikesBack no ship that small]] [[ContinuityNod has a cloaking device]]", he failed to calculate the difference of size, speed and maneuverability compared to his earlier experiences with cloaked cruisers, allowing Anakin to lead the rockets right back into his flagship's defenseless bridge. Luckily for him, he survived that.
** It happens again in the Bad Batch arc when Anakin, Captain Rex and Clone Squad 99 rescue Echo - who the Separatists had been using for a military algorithm to predict the Republic's moves - from Skako Minor. Echo, taking advantage of the fact that [[CorruptCorporateExecutive Wat Tambor]] is too scared of reporting his failure to keep hold of Echo to Trench, pretends to still be under Separatist control while infiltrating Trench's flagship, allowing him to sabotage the Separatist campaign on Anaxes.
* ImpaledWithExtremePrejudice: [[spoiler: How Anakin ultimately kills him.]]
* KilledOffForReal: [[spoiler: After having cheated death at least twice, he finally meets his end in the Bad Batch arc when Anakin impales him through the chest (thus nullifying the [[NeverFoundTheBody "no body seen"]] principle as was the case with his "death" in "Cat and Mouse") and then Wrecker blows up his ship with his corpse onboard.]]
* LargeHam: He puts plenty of emphasis in his lines during his first appearance. He's not quite as hammy after he gets reconstructed.
* LivingLegend: Yularen was quite terrified at the thought of having him as an opponent again.
* MadeOfIron: He survived getting blown up by torpedoes and being exposed to the vacuum of space somehow, although not without losing all of his left arms and half of his face in the process.
* MultiArmedMultitasking: Having several arms comes in handy.
* NamesToRunAwayFromReallyFast: "Trench", as in the kind soldiers are bogged down in in a warzone.
* NotQuiteDead: Invoked in his debut episode, as he was assumed to have died more than a decade earlier. He survived again when his ship was destroyed over Christophsis and was rebuilt as a cyborg.
* OhCrap: Had a moment for this before his own rockets blew him and his ship to smithereens.
* OutGambitted: Anakin pulled a BatmanGambit on him.
* RedEyesTakeWarning: Even his [[ElectronicEyes replacement eye]] following his cybernetic reconstruction is red, now with the addition of [[GlowingMechanicalEyes glowing]].
* SpiderPeople: Subverted, as he's not centaurid, but bipedal with extra arms instead of legs.
* StarterVillain: If you take the chronological order of the series into account, he's technically the first villain fought in ''The Clone Wars''. This is subverted in that not only did he first appear in Season 2, he's actually more threatening (and higher rank) than most of the Separatist commanders that chronologically came after him (at least in the early seasons) and [[NotQuiteDead he comes back later]].
* TheStrategist: One of several major strategists in the Separatist military.
* TwoFaced: Half his face (and body) is covered with cybernetic implants after his reconstruction.
* UnexpectedCharacter: His appearance in "The Unknown" was this during the first preview of that episode, as he was believed to have died in his first appearance four seasons earlier.
* UnexplainedRecovery: How he survived his apparent death in "Cat and Mouse" is given no explanation (being caught in an explosion and exposed to the vacuum of space), but given the extent of his cybernetics, he did not survive unscathed.
* VerbalTic: He tends to click his fangs a lot, usually between or mid-sentence.
* VillainOfTheWeek: He seemingly died at the end of his debut episode. Averted after he was revealed to have survived the events of said episode, and he was promoted to ArcVillain in the Bad Batch arc.
* WorthyOpponent: Considered Anakin to be one. He was right.
* WrongGenreSavvy: For how cunning he is most of the time, he incorrectly predicted that [[spoiler: [[TheUnfettered Anakin Skywalker]] wouldn't dare threaten to kill him just because he's a [[MartialPacifist Jedi]], and this eventually resulted in his final death]].

->'''Portrayed by:''' Creator/CoreyBurton
->'''Appears in:''' ''[[WesternAnimation/StarWarsTheCloneWars The Clone Wars]]''

-->''"Let's see what trickery the Jedi have planned for us."''

A Neimoidian fleet officer, Mar Tuuk commanded the Separatist blockade of Ryloth.
----
* AbandonShip: When he realizes that Anakin has set his Star Destroyer on a collision course with his flagship, Mar Tuuk promptly hands over command to his OOM battle droid and escapes in an escape pod.
* FatalFlaw: His desire for recognition and wanting Anakin to know exactly who it was who defeated him led to him not realizing that Anakin's surrender was faked until it was too late to save his flagship from destruction.
* TheStrategist: Given the portrayals of other Neimoidians, Mar Tuuk is a surprisingly capable one. He is able to anticipate most of what his opposition will do, and makes an effort to know his enemy by learning all he can about Anakin.
* WhatHappenedToTheMouse: He is introduced as one of the few competent and somewhat honorable Separatist commanders, but never appears again after his debut episode. This is even more strange since the writers decided not to kill him as originally planned because they found him to be an interesting character.
* WorthyOpponent: Considers Anakin to be one, thinking highly of skills as a commander.

[[folder:Kalani]]
!!General Kalani
[[quoteright:300:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kalani_sw_8006.jpg]]

->'''Voiced by:''' Creator/GreggBerger
->'''Appears in:''' ''[[WesternAnimation/StarWarsTheCloneWars The Clone Wars]]'' | ''[[WesternAnimation/StarWarsRebels Rebels]]''

-->''"If you do not fight, then you will be terminated."''

A super tactical droid assigned to Onderon to assist King Sanjay Rash in defeating the Republic-backed rebels. After the rise of the Empire, his holdout of battle droids was left untouched for a decade and a half until it was come across by rebels led by Captain Rex on a salvage mission to the supposedly abandoned base.
----
* AntiMutiny: Kalani refused to implement the shutdown command sent out after Order 66, deeming it a Republic trick since it would be illogical to surrender when the Separatists would likely have won the war.
* AscendedExtra: He returns in ''Rebels'' as the leader of a Separatist holdout and is the main villain of its debut episode, "The Last Battle", at least until the Empire shows up.
* BadassBoast: Surprisingly often for a droid. For instance, when Tandin mentions others will take Saw's place if he dies.
-->'''Kalani:''' They too will suffer.
* BackForTheDead: Subverted. He was assumed to have returned in the "The Big Bang" reel, only to be destroyed for good offscreen when an oversized kyber crystal destroys his ship. Then he was confirmed to have survived the Clone War just from his appearance in ''Rebels''. After the first preview of "The Last Battle", [[https://twitter.com/pablohidalgo/status/788143880180932608 Pablo Hidalgo revealed]] that the droid in "The Big Bang" wasn't specifically meant to be Kalani in the script. So his character model may have been a placeholder for a different tactical droid that would have replaced Kalani had the episode's animation been finished, and Gregg Berger being listed as Kalani was a crediting error.
* BigBadWannabe: In his debut appearance in ''Rebels'', he's the leader of a holdout, and [[DownplayedTrope while he doesn't fare too bad on it]], the Empire is a much more menacing threat, leading to an EnemyMine between his forces and the ''Ghost'' crew.
* CreepyMonotone: [[MachineMonotone He is a droid, after all]].
* TheDragon: A small-scale one for Dooku, and his task is to serve as one for [[TyrantTakesTheHelm Sanjay Rash]].
** DragonInChief: Rash is stunningly inept, making Kalani this. To the point that he executes Rash once it's clear the civil war is lost.
* EliteMooks: Some sort of elite tactical droid, the very first of his kind seen in the series.
* EnemyMine: After trying to 'win the war' by defeating Captain Rex and co., the Empire shows up, and presumably, Kalani decides the bigger threat here is the Empire and teams up with Rex and the Rebels, although he declines to join the Rebellion afterwards due to have small their chance of success it.
* EvilCannotComprehendGood: His AchillesHeel. Kalani can't comprehend why the Partisans fight, which is why he fails to see Tandin's betrayal coming. Likewise, he fails to understand how a small but coordinated force could operate - let alone fight - in the face of a larger enemy, and so his attempts to stop them with more and more force continue to fail.
* EvilSoundsDeep: Gregg Berger at work. The electronic reverberation makes his voice sound even deeper.
* {{Foil}}: To Rex. Both of them are [[OldSoldier old soldiers]], made for the sole purpose of winning a war through fighting, only for both sides to lose and both soldiers outliving their purpose, with nothing left to do but continue another seemingly hopeless fight, though not without some bitterness and desire for closure by trying to 'truly' win said already-lost war this time around.
* [[GlowingMechanicalEyes Glowing Mechanical]] RedEyesTakeWarning: Remarkable because regular tactical droids tend to have white eyes.
* GoneHorriblyRight: Super tactical droids are meant to be the smartest droids there are in terms of strategy, to which they rival organic tacticians as well. Kalani calculated that the odds of the Separatists winning the Clone Wars was high enough that he rejected the shutdown signal for his forces under the belief that it was a trick by the Republic, seeing that it would be illogical if the Separatists surrendered despite having the upper hand (at least according to his calculations).
* HeelFaceTurn: Downplayed as part of his EnemyMine with the Ghost Crew. He accepts that the Clones, Jedi, and Droids were all the losers in the Clone Wars, and no longer sees them as his enemy. Though he doesn't join them due to how low the chance of their Rebellion's success is.
* KarmaHoudini: He escapes Onderon after killing Rash. Due to a crediting error (likely a result of the Utapau arc's unfinished status), it seemed that karma caught up to him in "The Big Bang" when he got destroyed by a kyber crystal big enough to power a superlaser... and it turned out, [[DoubleSubverted he's still alive]].
* KnowWhenToFoldEm: Clearly knows the right time to retreat and the right time to attack.
* LackOfEmpathy: To pretty much everyone. He is a killing machine, after all.
* MeaningfulName: "Kalani" means "royal one" or "chieftain", which matches with his status as an [[EliteMooks elite]] tactical droid and MookLieutenant for the droids.
* MookLieutenant: An upgrade on the Confederacy's previous tactical droids.
* NoSenseOfHumor: He also can't tell between SincerityMode and SarcasmMode (though he is a DeadpanSnarker to some extent), if this conversation with [[DefiantCaptive Zeb]] is any indication.
-->'''Zeb, after the others do a number on Kalani's battle droids''': Might as well surrender now.\\
'''Kalani''': I am not programmed to comprehend your sense of humor.\\
'''Zeb''': [[ImpliedDeathThreat I'm not joking]].\\
'''Kalani''': [[DeadpanSnarker Ha. Ha. Ha.]]
* NotHelpingYourCase: While coming up with a plan with the crew to fight off the Empire, he reveals that the proton bombs can't be fired because the cannons are unusable/gone -- to which he continues that if he ''did'' have usable cannons, then he would've shown them to the rebels by using the bombs in the simulation. Knowing how blunt droids can be, the crew doesn't take it to heart.
* PetTheDog: He doesn't join in on an EnemyMine situation with Rex and the rebels out of any moral goodness, but by the end, he does parts ways amiably, showing respect for the rebels' fight against the Empire, even if he opted out of it. It's also suggested he did mellow out and gain a bit of humility after being abandoned.
* ObviouslyEvil: A black droid with a CreepyMonotone and a chassis that resembles a skull. With all of that, it's not hard to guess his moral alignment.
* OddNameOut: Kalani doesn't sound like a name that would be given to droids. Other super tactical droids have names like Aut-O (from the D-Squad arc) and Kraken (from the Banking Clan arc) are more justifiable, but Kalani and Tey-Zuka (from ''Son of Dathomir'') are questionable.
* OldSoldier: Droid variant, where he is compared to Rex.
* RidiculouslyHumanRobots: Mild example, Kalani expresses arrogance and anger occasionally. He also kills Rash the minute that the situation on Onderon is lost, not even waiting for an order from Dooku. In ''Rebels'' he acts as a {{foil}} to Rex, putting the crew through a ForcedPrizeFight so he can die doing what he was meant to rather than just rust away in obscurity, and after Ezra makes him realize he's fighting for a lost cause and convinces him to band with Rex for one last battle, he gives up the war and heads off to parts unknown to find another purpose in life.
* ScrewThisImOuttaHere: After teaming up with the the Ghost Crew to escape the Empire, he calculates that the Rebellion has a snowball's chance on Mustafar of winning the war and nopes out to parts unknown. He's very polite about it, however, and the Rebels don't seem to have any hard feelings about losing him.
* SmugSnake: Downplayed. While he is almost as arrogant as the previous model of tactical droids and fails to consider why the Onderon Partisans fight at all, ([[NiceJobFixingItVillain which led to]] [[HeelFaceTurn Tandin's defection]]), he lacks the overall incompetence that the older models sometimes exhibit (and he's certainly smarter than King Rash).
* TheStrategist: Being a tactical droid, this is a given. And unlike most tactical droids, he's quite efficient. He even keeps a realistic assessment of his chances, something the standard tactical droid seems to lack. In Rebels, Ezra specifically points out that his War Game Strategy would have beaten them if the droids hadn't been so old and malfunctioning, which he agrees to.
** DidntSeeThatComing: [[DefectorFromDecadence Tandin's betrayal]] and Ahsoka's participation.
*** UpToEleven in that he didn't expect the Separatists to lose and surrender, [[AntiMutiny that he refused the shutdown order after Order 66]] under the belief that it was a trick by the Republic.
* TortureTechnician: He personally tortures Saw when the young rebel is captured.
* UnexpectedCharacter: For ''Rebels'', as many assumed he died (due to a crediting error in the Utapau arc that labeled what was supposed to be another generic Super Tactical Droid voiced by Greg Berger as Kalani) and that he wouldn't mean much beyond a one-shot ArcVillain anyway. He ends up being a sort of {{Foil}} for Rex in "The Last Battle", the both of them being [[OldSoldier veterans]] of a war they were made for but yet outlived it.
* YouHaveOutlivedYourUsefulness: Delivers it to [[TyrantTakesTheHelm Rash]]. He didn't even need to be ordered. In ''Rebels,'' being that he was Separatist pawn in Palpatine's grand scheme, he nearly becomes the receiver of this trope.

->'''Portrayed by:''' Creator/CoreyBurton

-->''"Unless you call off your troops right now, I will have no choice but to destroy you!"''

A general in charge of Separatist ground operations on Christophsis.
----
* AffablyEvil: Loathsom is an honorable opponent, offering the Republic forces a chance to surrender as he invades forward. When Obi-Wan personally "surrenders", Loathsom accepts and arranges a table with beverages for the negotiation.
* TheCameo: He has two appearances outside of the film: one is in "The Hidden Enemy", which takes place before the film, and in "The Jedi Who Knew Too Much", where he appears in a prison cell on Coruscant.
* FatalFlaw: His {{Pride}}, which Obi-Wan exploits to stall for time when "surrendering" to him.
-->'''Obi-Wan:''' Tis a rare honor to be able to meet one's opponent face to face. You're a legend throughout the Inner Core.\\
'''Loathsom:''' Thank you. The honor is all mine. I'm so glad you decided to surrender.
* HumanoidAlien: Has the basic human body shape, but has a distinctly alien appearance.
* IronicName: Despite having an obviously evil-sounding name, Loathsom is probably one of the most respectable and noble Separatists seen on-screen. In fact, his negotiation for the Republic's surrender on Christophsis has Obi-Wan being the deceptive and sneaky one (stalling time for Anakin and Ahsoka to sabotage the Separatist's force shield) and Loathsom being the honorable and honest one.
* PunnyName: Just sound out his name, ''Worm Loathsome''. Surprisingly, [[AffablyEvil he's quite polite and respectable]] for a Separatist commander with [[IronicName a name like that]].
* WorthyOpponent: Considers Obi-Wan to be one.

->'''Portrayed by:''' Creator/GeorgeTakei
->'''Appears in:''' ''[[WesternAnimation/StarWarsTheCloneWars The Clone Wars]]''

An obese Neimoidian general and weapons inventor.
----
* DirtyCoward: He may be a genius weapon inventor, but the only target he is willing to test it on is a species of utter pacifists who have no way to defend themselves.
* EvilGenius: He invented the Defoliator, some sort of [[FantasticNuke napalm that burns only living tissue]], but has no affect on machinery such as droids.
* FatBastard: He is the largest Neimoidian seen in the franchise, and none of the others have ever tried to wipe out an entire colony in a weapons test.
* HoistByHisOwnPetard: Invoked. After Anakin destroyed the Defoliator tank, one of the shells fell out of it. When Lok Durd saw it rolling towards him, he panicked because he thought that his own invention was going to kill him.
-->'''Lok:''' Help! I'll be ''[[Funny/StarWarsTheCloneWars defoliated]]''!
* LargeHam: He's pretty flamboyant. He's also voiced by George Takei.
* {{Narcissist}}: According to supplementary material. See RousingSpeech and SmallNameBigEgo below.
* NiceHat: Neimoidians have a penchant for wearing these.
* RousingSpeech: Subverted when he's introducing the Defoliator to a group of battle droids. According to the Decoded version of "Defenders of Peace", [[MechaMooks battle droids]] don't actually need rousing speeches; Lok Durd just likes to hear himself talk.
* SmallNameBigEgo: He considers the Defoliator his own weapon and only thinks about how it will get him to a higher position (and considering he's already a General, he thinks way too highly of himself) in the Confederacy. According to supplementary material, he makes more noise in the war room than he does on the battlefield.
* SmugSnake: He was obscenely overconfident about the power of the Defoliator and the political power it would bring him. He winds up in jail by the end of his only episode.
* VillainOfTheWeek: He was captured by Anakin at the end of his debut episode. However, his Defoliator apparently made it to mass-production, as it turns up again in "Massacre".

A brutal Karkarodon who served as the Separatist ambassador on Mon Calamari during the King-electing negotiations between the Mon Cala and Quarren.
----
* {{Ambadassador}}: He was the ambassador of the Separatists during the king election of Mon Calamari. After the negotiations between the Mon Cala and the Quarren went south (not in small part, because of his machinations), he lead the joined Quarren-Separatist forces to battle, and proved to be as badass as expected from a SharkMan.
* AmbitionIsEvil: Count Dooku apparently earned Tamson's loyalty by promising the Karkarodon that he would rule Mon Calamari once it was under Separatist control.
* ArcVillain: Of the Mon Calamari-trilogy.
* AssInAmbassador: Even though he was officially merely an "observer" during the king's election, he had the nerves to talk down to Prince Lee-Char, the rightful heir of the throne, telling him that he didn't earn the right to speak at the gathering.
* BadBoss: He threatened, talked down to, and betrayed Nossor Ri and the Quarrens.
* BlackEyesOfEvil: Quite fitting, given that he's a shark-man.
* CardCarryingVillain: He is quite possibly the closest thing ''The Clone Wars'' has to a SaturdayMorningCartoon villain, acting deliciously aggresive at all times.
* CharacterDeath: It doesn't get much more dead than being blown to bits. We even get a shot of his body-less head sinking to the bottom of the sea.
* EverythingsEvenWorseWithSharks: He's a shark-man who serves as the main antagonist in the Mon Calamari arc of ''The Clone Wars''.
* EvilGloating: Riff gloated to Prince Lee-Char about how he murdered the latter's father.
* EvilIsPetty: He insisted on sentencing Lee-Char to death while sitting on the throne of Mon Calamari.
* EvilSoundsDeep: As is to be expected from Gary Anthony Williams.
* FamilyUnfriendlyDeath: Even by the standards of ''The Clone Wars'', Tamson's death was ''brutal''.
* FishPeople: Karkarodons are shark aliens.
* ForTheEvulz: According to him, he would've have tortured the prisoners regardless of whether or not they told him about Lee-Char's whereabouts.
* FrontLineGeneral: Being a humanoid aquatic predator, he'll put his jaws to use while fighting alongside his droids.
* HoistByHisOwnPetard: Literally. During their final confrontation, Prince Lee-Char took one of his dagger-bombs and used it on him.
* ILied: When the Jedi refuse to tell him about Prince Lee-Char's whereabouts, he puts Anakin on a timer by putting a leak in Padme's diving helmet. Even then, they are unable to tell him, making him assume they don't actually know. Once the prince is captured, he just leaves Padme to drown.
* ImAHumanitarian[=/=]ToServeMan: Not confirmed, but if the Karkaradon habit of killing their enemies with their teeth and being a SharkMan are anything to go by, he may actually eat his enemies, sapient or not.
* {{Jerkass}}: Villainy aside, Tamson is just plain unpleasant.
* LargeHam: Probably one of the ''least'' subtle villains in the entirety of ''The Clone Wars'', which is saying something.
* LudicrousGibs: His explosive death.
* MadeOfIron: Ahsoka hit him with her lightsaber once and he was shot several times by Mon Cala soldiers, but they all had very little effect on him. It took a bomb stuck in his shoulder to kill him.
* MoreTeethThanTheOsmondFamily: And he made good use of them in battle.
* SharkMan: As a Karkarodon.
* ShoutOut: His demise is very clearly modeled after the end of ''Film/{{Jaws}}''.

--->-- '''Two B1 battle droids panicking during the Battle of Geonosis'''

The primary soldiers of the Trade Federation, battle droids number in the millions and are used as cannon fodder by the Separatist Alliance. Designed to be cheap and disposable, battle droids rely solely on force of numbers to achieve victory and lack any real situational awareness, making them an easy target for an ambush.
----
* ButtMonkey: Nothing ever goes right for them, and they tend to suffer quite amusing defeats.
* CatchPhrase: "Roger, roger!"
* CannonFodder: Most of the time, but they do manage to get in their fair share of kills from time to time.
* ColorCodedForYourConvenience: The OOM-series have different colored markings which determine their class. Yellow are command droids, red are security, and blue are pilots.
* HeliumSpeech: Of the electronic variant. In ''The Clone Wars'' and ''Revenge of the Sith'', they all have high-pitched squeaky voices.
* ImperialStormtrooperMarksmanshipAcademy: Played with. Most of the time their shots are blocked by the heroes, rather than miss completely.
** Played straight and {{lampshaded}} in "Ambush":
--->'''Droid:''' Hold on, almost. *Fires at Yoda's escape pod and completely misses the target*
--->'''Droid commander:''' What a terrible shot.
--->'''Droid:''' Oh well. It's my programming.
* {{Ineffectual Sympathetic Villain}}s: The [=B1=] units are so incompetent you almost feel bad for them.
* InSeriesNickname: Called "Clankers" by the Clone Troopers.
* KeystoneArmy: Originally operated like this, but later averted in the Clone Wars. The battle droids become no longer dependent on a central control unit like they were during the [[Film/ThePhantomMenace Battle of Naboo]]. However, because the [=OOMs=] and B1s aren't used to being able to think independently, [[TookALevelInDumbass they exhibit a lack of intelligence]] (they are most effective when they have a tactician around) and [[CloudCuckoolander develop odd personality quirks]].
* KillerRobot: It's in the name.
* MechaMooks: Cheap, disposable, and not particularly effective [[ZergRush except in numbers]].
* MookLieutenant: Downplayed by ''The Clone Wars'', but the command OOM droids (distinguished by their yellow markings) served as these predominately in ''The Phantom Menace''. OOM-9 was the leader of the droid army, taking orders directly from Viceroy Gunray and personally leading the battle against the Gungans.
* NothingIsScarier: They can actually be quite intimidating when they're silent. The effect is something like an unending tide of robotic zombies.
* NotSoHarmlessVillain: Battle droids can be funny... until you see them ruthlessly hunting down stragglers, executing wounded enemies, and so on.
* RidiculouslyHumanRobots: The B1 battle droids.
* TooDumbToLive: Most of the time.
* TookALevelInBadass: Throughout the course of ''The Clone Wars'', their comic relief side was increasingly downplayed more and more to the point that by the time of the fourth season, the only real instance of it was from some Battle Droids reprogrammed to work for the Republic. And as their comic-relief tendencies have decreased, their lethality noticeably improved.
* TookALevelInDumbass: Before the TookALevelInBadass above, they went from stoic killer bots in the movies to laughable comic relief in earlier episodes of ''The Clone Wars''. One example has them too incompetent to even extinguish fire on their ship.
* WeHaveReserves: The Separatists droid armies outnumbered the Republic's clones a hundred to one, meaning they could be used up without concern. Though Dooku brings up that they cost a good amount of money.
-->'''Dooku''': Grievous, those battle droids are expensive.
* ZergRush: Their only real tactic.

->'''Appears in:''' ''Film/AttackOfTheClones'' | ''[[WesternAnimation/StarWarsTheCloneWars The Clone Wars]]'' | ''ComicBook/DarthMaulSonOfDathomir'' | ''Film/RevengeOfTheSith''

Following the Trade Federation's defeat on Naboo, it was decided that a newer, tougher model of battle droid needed to be manufactured. The result was a larger, more heavily armored droid with slightly higher intelligence and more effective, built-in weaponry. They serve throughout the Clone Wars, and are the most numerous droids in the Separatist army after the ordinary battle droids.
----
* ArmCannon: Some variants have a really big gun for an arm that can fire seeker missiles.
* CanonImmigrant: Not [=B2s=] in general, but the grapple variant that appeared in the ''Revenge of the Sith'' video game adaptation became canon thanks to one appearing in the second issue of ''Darth Maul: Son of Dathomir''.
* EvilIsBigger: They are larger and bulkier than the B1-s, and much more effective fighters.
* KillerRobot: Unlike their predecessors, they're portrayed as being extremely efficient and dangerous almost every time they appear.
* InSeriesNickname: They’re sometimes referred to as "Super Battle Droids".
* JetPack: Another sub-type comes with built-in ones.
* MechaMooks: Tougher mooks, but mooks nonetheless.
* MenOfSherwood: Equipped with heavier armor, capable of surviving multiple hits, they’re more competent than the B1-s, and in large numbers can be very effective, the super battle droids are an upgrade from the B1 in every way. They’re the true counterpart of the clones: , but they’re far from being on EliteMook levels.
* PuttingOnTheReich: As if it wasn't clear that the Separatists are evil, they now have an army of robots marching with their right arms outstretched.
* SuperWristGadget: The normal-type ones have dual-blasters built into their wrists.
* TopHeavyGuy: ''The Clone Wars'' art style makes their upper bodies look larger, and as a result, even more imposing.
* UnderestimatingBadassery: Two of them made a big mistake by underestimating R2-D2 just because he's an astro-droid. R2-D2 responded to them by [[KillItWithFire incinerating them]].
* WeHaveReserves: Billions of B2s serve the Separatist army, and Grievous and Dooku are both happy to throw them away.
* ZergRush: Like their predecessors, they are dependent on these sorts of tactics.

->'''Portrayed by:''' Matthew Wood
->'''Appears in:''' ''[[WesternAnimation/StarWarsTheCloneWars The Clone Wars]]'' | ''ComicBook/DarthMaulSonOfDathomir'' | ''[[ComicBook/StarWarsDarthVader Darth Vader]]''

An elite brand of droid units designed for commando and stealth missions.
----
* ConfusionFu: Because of their extreme agility, their movements are hard to predict.
* DressingAsTheEnemy: In their debut episode, they tried to fool Cody and Rex by putting one of them in clone trooper armor.
* EliteMooks: Not quite on the same level as the Droidekas or the Magnaguards, but they’re still more than a match for clones, and they can cause trouble to even Jedi.
* GoddamnedBats: They’re considered as such InUniverse by the Jedi: they’re not likely to kill or injure one, but they can distract them long enough.
* MundaneMadeAwesome: They have a human-like build, which allows them to disguise themselves as clone troopers.
* TheMusketeer: They’re using both blasters and vibro-swords, but never at once.

!!Droidekas
[[quoteright:300:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/destroyer_droids_sw_7007.jpg]]

->'''Appears in:''' ''Film/ThePhantomMenace'' | ''Film/AttackOfTheClones'' | ''[[WesternAnimation/StarWarsTheCloneWars The Clone Wars]]'' | ''ComicBook/DarthMaulSonOfDathomir'' | ''Film/RevengeOfTheSith'' | ''[[WesternAnimation/StarWarsRebels Rebels]]''

Also known as destroyer droids, droidekas are the elite of the Trade Federation's security forces, and go onto serve as the elite heavy infantry units of the Separatist Alliance. Huge, heavily armored, and equipped with force shields, the droidekas are more than a match for any enemy unit.
----
* AchillesHeel: Despite their reputation, they have several.
* ArmCannon: Possess heavy blasters for hands.
* TheDreaded: Even Jedi are wary of these things, and the only infantry units more dreaded than them are [=MagnaGuards=].
* DeflectorShield: Their trademark.
* MechaMooks: More dangerous and less common than the B1 or B2 models, but still quite prevalent.
* MightyGlacier: In attack mode, which allows them to use their twin front-facing blasters, but limits their movement speed.
* NamesToRunAwayFromReallyFast: "Destroyer droids", anybody?
* TripodTerror: Not as prevalent as the [[HumongousMecha Octuptarra Tri-Droids]], but they do have three legs.

!![=MagnaGuards=]
[[quoteright:300:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/magna_guard_sw_733.jpg]]

->'''Appears in:''' ''[[WesternAnimation/StarWarsTheCloneWars The Clone Wars]]'' | ''ComicBook/DarthMaulSonOfDathomir'' | ''Film/RevengeOfTheSith'' | ''ComicBook/StarWars''

Produced at horrendous expense, the [=MagnaGuards=] are self-motivated, learning droids, as functional and intelligent as any living being. Built for the sole purpose of fighting Jedi, [=MagnaGuards=] are specialized close-combat units who can take almost all comers.
----
* AdaptationalBadass: The continuities are unable to agree in how proficient those droids are in combat. On one hand, the films establish them as very good close querters fighters with some dangerous tricks up their sleeve, but still destroyable by a resourceful Jedi. On the other hand, some videogames, books and series portrays them as either impossibly agile and resilient or just little more dangerous than a B2.
* BadassCape: Some of them wear these, notably those serving under General Grievous.
* BladeOnAStick: They favor a Force-pike built from a material that dampens the effects of a lightsaber blade.
* BodyguardingABadass: Both Grievous and Dooku use them as their personal bodyguards, even though both of them are far more competent warriors than these guys.
* ShockAndAwe: Their staffs are electrified.

!!Infiltrator Droids
->'''Appears in:''' ''[[WesternAnimation/StarWarsTheCloneWars The Clone Wars]]''

Specially designed droids made for infiltrating and destroying targets behind enemy lines.
----
* ArmCannon: Their arms end in actual laser canons, instead of the standard blasters.
* CombiningMecha: Subverted. A pair of them can combine into a massive bomb, instead of into a more powerful droid.
* {{Giant Mook}}s: Their battle-mode forms are two-and half meters tall, and rather resilient.
* GlowingMechanicalEyes: Three of them.
* MadeOfIron: Aside from being literarily made of iron of course, their armor is strong enough to withstand repeated blaster fire.
* RedEyesTakeWarning: Glowing red optics.
* ShouldersOfDoom: Justified. Their gigantic shoulder-armor is their unfolded sweeper droid-disguises.
* SuicideAttack: They were designed to self-destruct once they reached their destination.
* TransformingMecha: They can disguise themselves as sweeperdroids.
* AWolfInSheepsClothing: Their disguised form is identical to harmless sweeper droids.

->'''Appears in:''' ''[[WesternAnimation/StarWarsTheCloneWars The Clone Wars]]'' | ''[[WesternAnimation/StarWarsRebels Rebels]]''

* RidiculouslyHumanRobots: As noted under SmugSnake, a lot of T-series tactical droids show an inflated sense of pride in being a droid (sometimes considering themselves superior in thought to organics).
* [[HumanShield Twi'lek Shield]]: TX-20 used Nabat's captive population as a shield for the proton cannons providing anti-air support for Ryloth's surface. This doesn't work, [[HoistByHisOwnPetard as he ends up torn apart by said shield]].
* WhyAmITicking: When Zygerrian slaver Darts D'Nar planted bombs all over Kiros's city, we secretly placed one bomb in reserve on his Tactical Droid, activating it to distract Obi-Wan. Judging from the droid's reaction, he was not informed of this.
