* MeaningfulName: Her name roughly means "freedom" in Gaelic, and she turns out to be the key to freeing the rest of TheFairFolk from Macha's TakenForGranite so they can return home.

* ADogNamedDog: His name really just means "dog" in Irish Gaelic.

* MeaningfulName: Her name means "sorrow" in Gaelic, and while not a sorrowful person by nature, her disappearance caused a lot of sorrow to her family.

* CharacterDevelopment: He starts out as an incredibly petty [[BigBrotherBully bully]] and [[JerkAss jerk]] towards Saoirse, but gradually comes to let go of his earlier resentment and realize he does actually love her - to the point where [[spoiler: he risks his life to dive into the stormy sea to recover her selkie coat to save her life, despite having a major [[WhyDidItHaveToBeSnakes fear of water]] and knowing full well he can't swim]].

* {{Jerkass}}: Especially at the onset, he's a spiteful brat to his younger sister because he sees her as being responsible for their mother's disappearance. [[BigBrotherInstinct It]] [[DefrostingIceKing doesn't]] [[TookALevelInKindness last]], fortunately.

* RavenHairIvorySkin: Saoirse takes after her mother with dark hair and much fairer skin compared to Conor and Ben. Saoirse and Bronagh are the only human-passing characters who look like this, so it's a more obvious hint to their fae heritage.

* HorribleJudgeOfCharacter: She looks up to Ben even though he’s very cold and distant towards her most of the time.
