Trope was cut/disambiguated due to cleanup

* CharClone: Inverted. Red Impulse predated the TropeNamer. Red Impulse is an example of the "Mentor" version of this trope, an ace pilot with a concealing mask and a custom red fighter plane, who is able to rival Gatchaman and the rest of the Science Ninja Team without their toys, who Ken starts to see as a rival. [[spoiler:And, of course, he's secretly Ken's long lost father.]]

** The OVA downplays the trope. In that continuity, a young Ken was briefly reunited with his father during his [[MissingMom mother's funeral]]. Kentarou has to hold back his ManlyTears while explaining that [[DaddyHadAGoodReasonForAbandoningYou his mission was too important for him to come back earlier]], and soon leaves his son behind again. [[spoiler:Ken also seems to realize who Red Impulse is after hearing his parting words to the Science Ninja Team in that episode.]]

* ScrewTheRulesImDoingWhatsRight: Not afraid to do this to Dr. Nambu

* TakeUpMySword: In the OVA. [[spoiler:Kentarou takes the role of his subordinates in infiltrating the Galactor home base; before sacrificing himself, he asks Joe to give Ken his father's sword. Ken uses the sword during a turning point in the Science Ninja Team's battle with Katse.]]

* HeroSecretService - The Red Impulse squadron specializes in pulling the Science Ninja Team's fat out of the fire when necessary; their first appearance in the TV series is coming to the rescue the first time Joe uses all of the Bird Missiles. In the OVA, it's pointed out that they fill in the gaps that even elite but small teams like the Science Ninja Team can't handle alone, when half of the army of Galactor mooks surrounding the team during an ambush reveal themselves as Red Impulse's men who had been undercover.

* VoiceOfTheLegion: In the ADV Films dub of the {{OVA}}s, Katse starts speaking with both his male and female voice actors in unison once he's unmasked during the final episode, each voice fading in and out in turn.

* BerserkButton: ''Ken the Eagle has daddy issues.'' Even in the early episodes, even guest characters' issues with their own fathers who either vanished or were killed by Galactor are guaranteed to at least shake his StandardizedLeader persona. Things come to a head in the Huntwall arc where Ken goes AWOL to pursue a lead about his father, leading to a NearVillainVictory [[spoiler: only resolved by the sacrifice of Red Impulse, who revealed himself only at the last minute]]. The next episode focuses on Ken's RoaringRampageOfRevenge and how it goes wrong and alienates him from the rest of the Science Ninja Team; even after Gatchaman learns his lesson, he's [[ReformedButNotTamed far more intense and angry for the rest of the series and its sequels]].

* NamedWeapons: His bladed PrecisionGuidedBoomerang, informally called the "Bird Run/Birdrang". The blades can be extended and used in melee combat or detached by chain and used as a nunchuck.

* MrFanservice: To a lesser extent than Joe, but his big blue eyes and boyish good looks score him points.

Hurting Hero is a disambiguation

* HurtingHero: He lost his father when he was a little child. Later he [[spoiler:finds out that his father is alive, only to see him KilledOffForReal]] shortly after. At the ending of the series, Joe [[spoiler:commits a HeroicSacrifice to save them.]] By Gatchaman F/Fighter, the third series, his mentor and surrogate father, [[spoiler: Dr. Nambu, gets killed]]. He then realizes the strain of using the Gatchaspartan's [[DangerousForbiddenTechnique Hypershoot]] is slowly killing him as well. All of that trauma progressively wears down his sanity, and although at the beginning he was the prototypical TheHero and TheLeader with NervesOfSteel, in the final series he becomes violent, uncontrollable and impulsive, perhaps even more so than Joe before him.

* KarmicDeath: Katse spends the entire series treating everyone as pawns to be abused and discarded once convenient. [[spoiler: Once it’s revealed Sosai X was manipulating in a similar fashion, Katse falls immediately into despair at the thought and jumps into a lava pit wishing death on everyone.
