This contributes to his growing list of problems that make his life increasingly more difficult, and it causes him to be less weary of real problems until it's already too late by that point. [[spoiler:The only good it did him was in the climax where it helped him mow down several of Sosa's mooks in his mansion, but it still didn't save his life outright and that was when he resolves to kill as many of them as possible because that was all that he had left to do, and these problems might not have been as severe to begin with if Tony hadn't become a cocaine addict.]]

* AlasPoorVillain: [[spoiler:[[DespairEventHorizon Seeing Tony kill his dear friend so impulsively over the fact that he is seeing Gina is indeed a tragic sight for one to see]], even more since they were so close to each other like they were brothers, and manny was always there for Tony even at his darkest hours, and also because this action is what ultimately destroys Gina's life. * AntiHero: He starts out as this at the beginning of the film, coming over to America with his friends in order to start a new life for the better, [[EvenEvilHasLovedOnes while also trying his absolute best to help provide for his estranged family in anyway that possibly he can]]. But as the movie goes on, [[ProtagonistJourneyToVillain he becomes progressively worse to the point where he becomes a full fledged]] VillainProtagonist [[spoiler:who kills in best friend in an impulsive fit of rage, attempts to kill an innocent journalist to avoid having to go to prison for three to five years, ([[EvenEvilHasStandards though in all fairness, he does call off the attempted hit]] [[NeverHurtanInnocent when he sees that the journalist has a]] [[WouldntHitAGirl wife and]] [[WouldntHurtAChild two children]] with him) and becomes overly protective of his sister Gina to the point that eventually results in her death at the hands of a rival cartel. And [[TheHeroDies Tony himself dies at the end]] after losing everything. [[BolivianArmyEnding But hey, he goes out like a true badass after taking plenty of bad guys with him, so there's that at least.]]]]

* BerserkButton: [[KnightTemplarBigBrother He absolutely does not like it]] [[MySisterIsOffLimits whenever other guys put the moves on his little sister Gina]]. Played in a [[MyGodWhatHaveIDone tragic way]] after he finds Manny with Gina and [[spoiler:and then impulsively kills him over it]]. [[WouldntHitAGirl He also reacts relatively violently]] [[WouldntHurtAChild when he learns that Sosa's henchman Alberto the Shadow expects him to be okay with]] callously killing innocent women and children.

[[EvenEvilHasStandards He does not kill the Bolivian anti-drug activist because]] [[WouldntHurtAChild children]] [[WouldntHitAGirl and a woman]] [[NeverHurtAnInnocent were put in danger by the attempted hit]]. Later on, this is played straight however, with the circumstances eventually leading to Tony's death.

* NobleDemon: While he is definitely a murderous drug kingpin with some seriously self-destructive tendencies, he has still at least has [[EvenEvilHasStandards standards]] compared to most of the other villainous people of the film. The noble aspects of him start to slowly diminish over the course of the story, as he becomes a drug addict and his HairTriggerTemper worsens, though it never goes away completely and he still keeps his NeverHurtAnInnocent attitude ([[SubvertedTrope until]] he agrees to kill an innocent journalist for Sosa, but even then, he [[EvenEvilHasStandards immediately backs out once he sees that the journalist brought his]] [[WouldntHitAGirl wife and]] [[WouldntHurtAChild children with him]]).

* WouldntHitAGirl: He would only ever go after men who actively challenge him. [[SubvertedTrope Bar the one time]] [[KnightTemplarBigBrother he slaps Gina]] for sneaking into the men's bathroom at the [[MySisterIsOffLimits Babylon Club to make out with a guy that she just met.]]

* WouldHitAGirl: During the chainsaw scene at the motel, he guns down Hector's female henchman Marta when he and Chi-chi come in to rescue Tony. Though to be fair, she was helping Hector kidnap Tony and Angel while the latter was [[CruelAndUnusualDeath carved up with a]] [[ChainsawGood chain]] [[AxCrazy by Hector]], and literally had a submachinegun in her hand so she could shoot Tony or his allies if they ticked them off, [[WouldntHitAGirl generally]] [[AvertedTrope averted]] [[WouldntHitAGirl otherwise.]]

* TheChessmaster: He was able to build himself a massive cocaine operation that stretches across the Andes' Mountains (which is the longest mountain range in the whole wide world, as it spans across seven countries in South America) as well as being able to do business in the United States (which also makes his operations multi-continental, since it is in North America as well), identifies Omar Saurez as a [[TheMole police informant]] and swiftly has him killed to cover his tracks, almost succeeds in killing a journalist trying to bring down his criminal empire, and only fails because of Tony's [[EvenEvilHasStandards refusal to kill the target's]] [[WouldntHitAGirl wife]] and [[WouldntHurtAChild two children]] when he saw them, (it's not as if Sosa could have predicted that they would have been there for the attempted hit), [[spoiler:and in the climax of the movie, he is even able to [[HeroKilller successfully take down Tony Montana himself]] [[TakingYouWithMe after the latter double-crossed him by sabotaging the mission]], even if Sosa does ultimately get arrested for his crimes.]]

* SmallRoleBigImpact: Updates Tony on the various government agencies cracking down on drug money and the need for further discretion. He's basically the only characters other than Sosa who can shield Tony from a tax evasion charge, and Tony's refusal to pay him his dues this dooms him.

* NormalFishInATinyPond: He's one of the biggest kingpins in Miami, but compared to the likes of Sosa, who fraternizes with Washington politicians and has the IRS in his pocket, he's positively small fry. In fact, while the tax evasion charge is a grave concern that Tony can't solve no matter how much money he throws at it, Sosa can casually make it go away in exchange for a very small favor. The fact that Tony goes uncharacteristically quiet and solemn while being introduced to Sosa's friends shows that on some level, even he knows this; he's just jumped-up street thug getting rich off distributing a better criminal's drugs in a room full of real power brokers. Sosa even makes sure to subtly rub it in too, introducing everyone by their name and their position, while introducing Tony only by his name as if to say that he has nothing to his name compared to them.

* NormalFishInATinyPond: He's one of the biggest kingpins in Miami, but compared to the likes of Sosa, who fraternizes with Washington politicians and has the IRS in his pocket, he's pretty small fry. In fact, while the tax evasion charge is a grave problem that Tony can't solve no matter how much money he throws at it, Sosa can casually sweep it away in exchange for a small favor. The scene where Tony is introduced to Sosa's powerful friends highlights how out of depth he is, with Tony uncharacteristically meek and quiet compared to his usual bombastic personality.

** He also cautions Tony against doing business with Sosa, noting that the latter has a reputation for treachery and punishing those who disappoint him with extreme prejudice. Though the treachery part is a bit of a stretch, the failure part is proven completely right when Tony botches a mission and has an entire battalion of Sosa's hitmen crashing into his house as punishment.

* CassandraTruth: When Tony threatens to drop him and use a cheaper money launderer, Jerry warns him that he won't find anyone more reliable than him in this business. Sure enough, when Tony makes good on his threat and goes to someone else, it turns out to be a police sting operation.

But [[VillainsNeverLie other than his own statements]], and the brief phone call we see him take from his henchmen Alberto, the audience is never given any definitive proof of this otherwise. Though it's not as if Tony cares, since he never liked Omar and he may have sent his friend Angel to his death. If Omar wasn't a rat, then one has to wonder; what other motivation could Sosa have to want to kill him? For what it's worth, Sosa did actually name the names of those that Omar had presumably put behind bars.]]
** [[spoiler:Did Sosa really know that the journalist would have his wife and kids with him? If he did, then it seems like he would have bothered to mention this little fact to Tony and Alberto beforehand, and possibly find a different, more subtle way to kill him.]]

This too is never given any definitive proof beyond [[VillainsNeverLie Sosa's own words]] and a brief phone call Sosa's henchmen takes, and Frank at least is not convinced.]]

Or, on the other hand, are they simply [[MySisterIsOffLimits obsessive, overzealous]] [[KnightTemplarBigBrother (and ultimately dangerous) protectiveness]] because he views Gina as [[MoralityPet the one true source of light within his life]]?

Although {{Downplayed}} when compared to some of the others that Tony has killed in the film, since Frank was at the very least one of the [[AffablyEvil nicer drug dealers in the film]], and he did have somewhat legitimate reasons to want to kill Tony (namely that he was trying to steal Elvira from him, and he made a deal with Sosa behind his back after Sosa killed his [[TheDragon second-in-command Omar Suarez.])]]]

* DirtyCoward: He always sends his guys out for him to carry out his dirty work rather than handle things himself, something that Tony even points out while confronting him in his office. Frank tries to lie at first, but then admits that he was the one who had set up the hit after finding out that Mel won't help him out of the mess. He offers to give Tony both money and Elvira, and ends by pleading and groveling at his feet.

* FaceDeathWithDespair: He dies on his knees all the while pathetically groveling for his life. By the end Tony is bound to find him so pathetic that he can't even be bothered to kill him himself.
