* KnightOfCerebus: Played with. Compared to Prince John, Sir Hiss, the Sheriff and the rest of his guard, he's arguably the most deadly serious of the movie's villains even if he appears in very few scenes. He is inches away from killing Robin in a sword fight, almost kills an old owl couple during the prison escape, and arrives to trap Robin Hood in the castle, albeit briefly. However, during his first fight with Robin, he’s nearly accidentally shot by Trigger and later gets trampled by his own allies, showing that even he’s not completely immune to slapstick.

Alan-A-Dale is based off the minstrel of the same name from various Robin Hood legends, and is depicted as a rooster. Alan-a-Dale only states his name at the beginning of the film, where he also introduces himself as a minstrel. He functions as the film's narrator, using songs to tell the story.

* ArchEnemy: To Prine John and The Sheriff of Nottingham, as is typical of Robin Hood stories.

* ArchEnemy: To Robin Hood of course, being that John is the one taxing the poor to the point of starvation and Robin is the one stealing the money back. John is also the one preventing Robin from marrying Maid Marian.

* HistoricalDomainCharacter: Like his brother, he is based on a real life historical figure (King John Plantagenet), only literally (but not figuratively) lionised.

to:

* HatedByAll: Naturally, being TheCaligula, Prince John is hated by his subjects. Case in point, the lady-in-waiting to his own niece openly mocks him in the courtyard of his own castle (and this is before Maid Marian openly rebels against him). Even his two most loyal henchmen (Sir Hiss and The Sheriff of Nottingham) don't really like him, as they happily sing TheVillainSucksSong with Sir Hiss even say that it fits John to a tee.

This is pretty speculative.

* AChildShallLeadThem: Noted above about his mane and throughout this list with his immaturity, Prince John actually comes off as a child TRYING to rule like an adult. He lacks a mane (which anyone knows grows out on ''mature'' male lions), he has childlike tendencies, his tone of voice sounds like a young teen compared to his brother, neither his clothes nor his robe fit him properly (though it could be argued they are his brother's, but that hardly says much otherwise), and unlike his brother, John is relatively ''tiny'' in comparison to a number of other characters, including those among his own army and being hardly that much bigger than Robin Hood himself. With this in mind, a lot of his over-the-top childishness makes enormous sense. It's just a shame that Nottingham is on a downward spiral so long as he's in charge...

Now correct me if I am wrong but there was no implication that the Sheriff expected this kind of response from Tuck. He actually looked quite surprised and even just tried to argue that he is just doing his duty. As for Trigger well as the deputy he could have been around just looking for any tax-evaders to imprison. If there is any proof contrary to this that proves that there was a gambit indeed then please do readd

Later, when it looks like he stupidly talked himself into a beating from Friar Tuck, it's revealed to be a BatmanGambit, with him disarming and arresting him as soon as Trigger is revealed waiting in position. It is this act that leads everyone to [[OhCrap realise John's forces aren't playing around anymore]], starting the DarkestHour.
